As I reflect on the services provided in Fiscal Year 2019, I first need to start by recognizing the hard work and dedication of the entire Sacred Heart Team. I am privi-leged to work with a Board of Directors and staff that are equally passionate about helping people. Daily, I saw staff demon-strating - The Sacred Heart Way - whether it was how they interacted with clients, or how they worked tirelessly advocating on some-one’s behalf. Our mission to help those with limited means access quality addiction treatment services and/or our HIV/AIDS care manage-ment services was in full force in 2019. We made a commitment internally to do every-thing in our power to expand opioid treat-ment services. Helping to do our part in response to the opioid epidemic was front and center in our planning efforts. We have lost too many family members, neighbors and colleagues to addiction. It was only within the past few years that there was broader acceptance of addiction being a chronic brain disease. With that acceptance, and the opioid epidemic ripping our loved ones from us, we saw an increase in available funding for treatment and recovery services. With these dollars, Sacred Heart worked with community partners to develop and implement a comprehensive opioid treatment outpatient program, expanded medication assisted treatment services in county jails, and increased recovery support services through-out the state, with a focus on quality housing for individuals engaged in medication assisted treatment. At Sacred Heart, individ-uals maintained on medication are treated the same as individuals not receiving medications. We treat people how we ourselves want to be treated – with dignity and respect. The children that accompanied their mothers into Sacred Heart’s specialty services were met with open arms. School aged children were provided with supplies, backpacks, and winter gear. Kids should be able to be kids, and our team makes sure that each child gets that chance. Sacred Heart prides itself on being a distinctively different human service organization operating in a distinctively different way: The Sacred Heart Way.CEO message200childrenin treatment with their parents

Our AIDS CARE Program provided free HIV testing services throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region made possible through donations. Our supportive services related to housing needs were provided to people throughout the entire northern region of the lower peninsula. Care management services helped guide 172 people through needed medical and behavioral health services. Using donated dollars, our team helped pay a client’s rent. This individual was faced with either paying his rent or getting his vehicle repaired, a vehicle that he needed to access healthcare appointments. Funding guidelines prevented grant dollars from being utilized. Sacred Heart stepped up. We help people avoid making that difficult decision of what is a priority - housing or medical care. Both are critical needs. I would be remiss if I did not briefly mention the struggles we are all facing in 2020 due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. These are unprecedented times. Questions often asked at Sacred Heart – If we are not doing something, can we do it? If not, what is on the other end of our decision? Do we feel comfortable with that decision? Decisions are often not easy, but are made to maintain our commitment to individuals, to families, to children and to the communities we are fortunate to be in. We are a strong organization and our team will keep moving forward - The Sacred Heart Way - providing quality services to the thousands of men, women and families that rely on us to be here for them. The Sacred Heart Way is a commitment to comprehensive services and individualized care. And beyond client service it is one of leadership in advocating for community awareness, regulatory reform and recovery support.Paula Nelson, Sacred Heart CEO
