DEAR FRIENDS,It is time for Summermusik 2023!I am thrilled to welcome you to four weeks of exploration, surprise, passion, and beauty. Summermusik is a festival that aims to excite, educate, and delight - and to create moments to remember. We present concerts in various formats with full orchestra and chamber ensembles in dierent venues around the city. Each series has a very dierent format, feel, and identity – and we hope to see you at all of them! Our first weekend will be dedicated to Beethoven as a human. In unfinished and reconstructed works, we discover his arduous and passionate composing process - and how long it took him to arrive at the timeless masterpieces we love. Our soloist will be Cincinnati’s own piano powerhouse Awadagin Pratt, who will be performing the world premiere of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 6. We will also present Beethoven’s unfinished Symphony No. 10 and his formidable and autobiographical Symphony No. 5. The following A Little Afternoon Musik will explore the topic of deafness and music and celebrate the astonishing feat of imagining music in one’s mind. The Bach family was an extraordinary musical dynasty that influenced an entire region of Germany and beyond, playing for kings, princes, and the clergy. In “The Bachs: A Musical Dynasty”, we will investigate the extensive family that bridges the Baroque and Classical styles. You will hear music by the many Bachs - known and unknown. Additionally, internationally acclaimed flutist Mimi Stillman will join the CCO for the Ohio premiere of Grammy-nominated composer Zhou Tian’s flute concerto. The third weekend is a celebration of the rich musical and cultural heritage of Cuba with “A Night in Havana”. Cuban music - classical or popular - is full of rhythm and color. Composers Tania León and Ernest Lecuona will represent their home country. We are thrilled to welcome one of the greatest musicians to come out of Cuba: 10-time Grammy Award Winner Arturo Sandoval - one of the world's most acknowledged classical and jazz trumpet and flugelhorn players as well as a renowned composer. This will be a weekend full of warmth, passion, and toe tapping. Our final concerts are dedicated to the many dierent styles that create the unique and musically rich landscape of America. In “Americana” we pay tribute to ragtime, jazz, and contemporary genres. Award-winning violinist Tessa Lark will join us to play a Bluegrass concerto that will bring down the house. We are looking forward to playing for you - great music awaits!ECKART PREU3 DIFFERENT CONCERT EXPERIENCES2 | SUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2023Photo Credit: Phil Groshong

By virtue of these notes, we can get a glimpse into the composer's mind as it moves through the mysterious creative process of composing. Join us as we explore the unknown Beethoven with two reconstructed compositions. For Symphony No. 10 E-at Major, English musicologist Barry Cooper took Beethoven’s fragmentary sketches for a first movement of an unfinished symphony and reconstructed the movement in the style of Beethoven. In a world premiere, Cincinnati-based pianist Awadagin Pratt will perform a new reconstruction of the Piano Concerto No. 6 in D Major by Dutch pianist and composer Cees Nieuwenhuizen. The second half of the program begins with the most recognizable opening four notes to any symphony - three G's and an e-flat – which announce Beethoven's famous Symphony No. 5. The performance will be accompanied by readings from Beethoven’s Heiligenstadt Testament, an open letter the composer wrote to his brothers Carl and Johann detailing his mental health struggles as a result of his increasing deafness.BEETHOVENRECONSTRUCTEDSATURDAY, AUGUST 5Prelude Talk: 6:45pm | SCPA Mayerson TheaterEckart Preu, conductor7:30 pm | SCPA Corbett TheaterSUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2023 | 7Concert SponsorBEETHOVEN recnsrutedAwadagin Pratt SponsorFriends of SummermusikMusic SponsorChristopher & Nancy Virgulak

You may know that Ludwig van Beethoven wrote several works when he was almost completely deaf, but you may not know that many other famous composers also suered from hearing loss. From William Boyce to Gabriel Fauré to Bedřich Smetana, some of these composers’ most popular compositions were written without the benefit of sound perception.Join Cincinnati-based pianist Awadagin Pratt and our very own Principal Trumpet Ashley Hall as we explore the topic of how the deaf and hearing-impaired experience music through the works of composers who dealt with hearing loss. Pratt and Hall will be joined by members of our string section in one of the most beautiful acoustic settings in the Tristate.SOUND OF SILENCESUNDAY, AUGUST 6 | 4PMKNOX PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHApproximately 1 hour and 15 minutes8 | SUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2023AWADAGIN PRATTpianoASHLEY HALLtrumpetECKART PREUperformance curatormusic directorA Little Afternoon Musik Series SponsorsROSEMARY & MARK SCHLACHTERMELINDA & IRWIN SIMONConcert SponsorAwadagin Pratt SponsorLucy AllenMusic SponsorPeter Hsi & Jocelyn Wang

Join us as we attempt a deep dive into the genealogy and genetics of the Bach family and explore the question: How much of a composer's greatness is gained through training versus how much is in their genes? "The Bachs: A Musical Dynasty" presents works by Bach’s great-uncle, Johann Bach; his brother, Johann Christoph Bach; and his sons, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (child #5) and Johann Christian Bach (child #18). Paired with the music of the Bachs is a Summermusik co-commissioned flute concerto by Grammy-nominated composer Zhou Tian. The concerto was written for soloist and international flute superstar Mimi Stillman, who was the youngest wind player ever admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia at the age of 12.SATURDAY, AUGUST 12Prelude Talk: 6:45pm | CCC ChapelEckart Preu, conductor7:30 pm | Christ Church CathedralTHE BACHS:A MUSICAL DYNASTYSUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2023 | 11The Great-Uncle:JOHANN BACH (1604–1673)Unser Leben ist ein SchattenThe Brother: JOHANN CHRISTOPH BACH (1671-1721)Meine Freundin, du bist schönThe Master: JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685-1750)Sinfonia in D major, BWV 1045The Inuenced: ZHOU TIAN (b. 1981)Flute Concerto (CCO Co-Commission)Mimi Stillman, ute“The London Bach”: JOHANN CHRISTIAN BACH (1735-1782)MagnicatThe “Sensitive” Bach: CARL PHILIPP EMANUEL BACH (1714-1788)Magnicat in D Major Wq. 215 H.772I. Of the seven children that Johann Sebastian Bach had with his first wife Maria Barbara Bach, two of them had musical careers of their own: Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel. Of the 13 children from his second marriage with Anna Magdalena Wilcken, only Johann Christoph Friedrich and Johann Christian became significant composers. The program opens with Jessie Montgomery’s Banner (based on our national anthem), followed by James Reese Europe’s Castle House Rag. Europe was a groundbreaking Black composer, orchestra founder and leader between 1910-19, and one of the first Black musicians to make it to the mainstream. Richmond, Kentucky-born guest artist Tessa Lark is featured in Michael Torke’s bluegrass concerto for violin and orchestra entitled Sky.Ragtime music evolved out of the piano music played in bars, saloons, and brothels during the second half of the 19th century. Primarily known for his ragtime compositions, Scott Joplin also composed the opera Treemonisha from which you will hear the overture.
