DEAR FRIENDS,
It is time for Summermusik 2023!
I am thrilled to welcome you to four weeks of exploration, surprise, passion, and beauty.
Summermusik is a festival that aims to excite, educate, and delight - and to create moments to
remember.
We present concerts in various formats with full orchestra and chamber ensembles in dierent venues
around the city. Each series has a very dierent format, feel, and identity – and we hope to see you at
all of them!
Our first weekend will be dedicated to Beethoven as a human. In unfinished and reconstructed works,
we discover his arduous and passionate composing process - and how long it took him to arrive at the
timeless masterpieces we love. Our soloist will be Cincinnati’s own piano powerhouse Awadagin Pratt,
who will be performing the world premiere of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 6. We will also present
Beethoven’s unfinished Symphony No. 10 and his formidable and autobiographical Symphony No. 5.
The following A Little Afternoon Musik will explore the topic of deafness and music and celebrate the
astonishing feat of imagining music in one’s mind.
The Bach family was an extraordinary musical dynasty that influenced an entire region of Germany and
beyond, playing for kings, princes, and the clergy. In “The Bachs: A Musical Dynasty”, we will investigate
the extensive family that bridges the Baroque and Classical styles. You will hear music by the many
Bachs - known and unknown. Additionally, internationally acclaimed flutist Mimi Stillman will join the
CCO for the Ohio premiere of Grammy-nominated composer Zhou Tian’s flute concerto.
The third weekend is a celebration of the rich musical and cultural heritage of Cuba with “A Night in
Havana”. Cuban music - classical or popular - is full of rhythm and color. Composers Tania León and
Ernest Lecuona will represent their home country. We are thrilled to welcome one of the greatest
musicians to come out of Cuba: 10-time Grammy Award Winner Arturo Sandoval - one of the world's
most acknowledged classical and jazz trumpet and flugelhorn players as well as a renowned composer.
This will be a weekend full of warmth, passion, and toe tapping.
Our final concerts are dedicated to the many dierent styles that create the unique and musically
rich landscape of America. In “Americana” we pay tribute to ragtime, jazz, and contemporary genres.
Award-winning violinist Tessa Lark will join us to play a Bluegrass concerto that will bring down the
house.
We are looking forward to playing for you - great music awaits!
