R AIDER F OOTBALL 2013-14 The 2013 Football season was a very successful one. We were 7-3 overall and finished 3-3 in District. Our season was marked with one or two unexpected, unfortunate plays which could have resulted in an undefeated season for the Raiders! It was also marked with some exceptional, hard-hitting action that left us all cheering! This team played extremely well all year. We started the season by going 4-0 before losing 3 heartbreaker games in District. We lead the Metroplex in all classifications in total offense and I still think we were the best team in the district. As a program, we have to continue to mature, take advantage when opportunities present themselves, learn from hardships and disappointments, and continue to grow. This team has made me very proud to be a Raider! Also, Our JV was 8-1-1. This was the best record for a JV in the short history of Sunnyvale HS. I hope this team has set the stage for the future Raider teams. They worked very hard this season and although we did not achieve our ultimate goal, we felt like this season was a huge success. L ADY R AIDER V OLLEYBALL 2013 The Lady Raiders came into the season with many uncertainties, having lost several seniors, including 3 collegiate level players from the previous year’s team, as well as getting a new coach. From the start in August, the girls worked tremendously hard to fulfill their various roles on the new team. While we came up short of the playoffs in a very tough district, these girls continued to fight down to the very last match. The girls gave great effort on a daily basis and built many fundamental skills for the future. This season also gave these girls a great opportunity to learn many life lessons. While we will greatly miss our seniors and wish them the best of luck, we look forward to a very successful 2014 season! I would also like to thank Coach Armstreet and Coach Softley for the countless hours they put in this year. You can tell that both of them truly do care about these girls and their successes. 1 – Nadien Albanna – Junior Nadien “Sumo” always has a smile on her face. She did a great job stepping into a very important setter role this season. She seemed to always be able to make the other girls laugh at the right time. 6 – Maddie Colwill – Senior Maddie is a very hard worker and a competitor. She refused to give up, though she had some tough injuries that limited her season. She also did a great job encouraging teammates. 2 – Leslie Berry – Junior Leslie did a tremendous job stepping up as a captain on this team and playing all the way around the court. She is a positive role model and her teammates look up to her. I know she has extremely high expectations for her senior season. In a very competitive district, Leslie earned 2nd Team All-District. 7 – Lauren Brown – Sophomore Lauren earned a varsity position at the start of district play and never looked back. She led the district in blocks and was a force at the net. Lauren is a very talented athlete and has a great personality. We look forward to her being a dominant hitter/blocker for the next two years. 3 – Jenna McLaughlin – Senior Jenna has been a joy to coach. She is the ultimate team player and competitor. She truly wants to win but she always does whatever she is asked with a great attitude. Jenna will be very successful in her future endeavors. She earned TGCA Academic All-State. 8 – Caylen Campanello – Senior Caylen always has a positive attitude and is extremely coachable. She always does what is asked of her and more, exceeding expectations on a regular basis. She is fun to be around for both the players and coaches and we will miss her leadership on and off the court. Caylen earned TGCA Academic All-State. 4 – Rachel MacLachlan – Sophomore Rachel came into the season and worked tremendously hard to earn a varsity spot. She has great work ethic and was always at the top of every drill. Rachel is a great competitor and has a bright future. S U N N Y V A L E H I G H S C H O O L 9 – Avionne “Ivy” Alexander – Freshman Ivy is a tremendous competitor and always wants to win. She has a ton of athletic talent but has great work ethic to go along with that. She is always working to get better. She did a great job stepping up for us as a freshman and filling various roles this year. The girls also really enjoy her company. 2 0 1 4 A T H L E T I C B A N Q U E T

L ADY R AIDER V OLLEYBALL 2013 11 – Amanda Farr – Junior Amanda did a wonderful job playing the back row for us this year. She was probably our most improved player as her confidence and ability grew tremendously as the season played out. Amanda always wants to make sure she is doing things right and is willing to put in the extra work to make sure that happens. I know how hard Amanda works in the offseason and it will pay off with a great senior year. Manager – Jaye Williams Jaye was a vital part of our team this year. She is like a wizard on the iPad, keeping all of our teams’ stats. We really appreciate all of the hard work she put in for the team this year. 12 – Calli Roark – Junior Calli is a great leader by example. She works extremely hard on a daily basis and does a great job encouraging teammates. Calli always seems calm and composed and is a very consistent player on the court. We look forward to the great things she will accomplish in her senior season. JV1: Sarah Fowler, Chloe Howard, Mackenzie Mings, Marissa Munoz, Barbara Forman, Kaylee Setser, Karlee Williams, Lisa Evans, Halle Campbell JV Rosters JV2: Maria Ray, Arianna Lopez, Maddie McKnight, Sidney Heston, Kasi Justice, Macy Booth, Riley Jones 13 – Whitney Matous – Senior Whitney brings a whole new meaning to the word “effort.” She is extremely competitive and truly does everything in her power to not let the ball hit the floor. She did a great job at the libero position this year. She also has a great heart and truly desires to do the right thing at all costs. Whitney’s efforts earned her District 12-AA Defensive Player of the Year. She also received TGCA Academic All-State and Whitney was awarded the Trinity Valley Volleyball Officials Association Scholarship in the amount of $500. R AIDER T ENNIS 2014 The Raider tennis season this year was a great success for both the boys and the girls! The team worked very hard at practice on a daily basis and we had a lot of fun. We had multiple players winning medals or trophies at every tournament we went to this year, especially at the district tournament where the team captured an overall team district championship and a boys’ team district championship. The girls’ team was district runner-up. To go along with our many medalists, we had 2 teams of district champions in doubles, both of which went on to be regional medalists including 1 team of regional champions and state qualifiers. It was a season full of excitement and the tennis program has a very bright future! Boys Singles Jimmie Henson – Sophomore Jimmie has a great passion for tennis and puts in a great deal of time outside of practice, as he juggles his time between many other Sunnyvale teams and programs. Jimmie lost a very close semifinal match at district that was hard for him to take with his competitive spirit. He was 3rd place at district and earned a trip to regionals as the alternate. Jimmie will be a force for 2 more years. Jacob Brooks – Freshman Jacob was really of lot of fun to coach this year. He is just a great kid to be around and the other kids enjoy him as well. He goes above and beyond, playing in tournaments year round and did a great job earning a singles spot as a freshman, and finishing 4th in the district tournament. Girls Singles Radhika Nune – Freshman Radhika is a very tough player. She won more close matches this year than anyone on our team. She truly knows how to win in a tiebreaker. She did a great job as a freshman, earning 3rd place at district. It will be fun to watch Radhika battle it out for 3 more years. Serena Nguyen – Freshman Serena is a solid player that is very competitive. She hates to lose and that is exemplified by her work ethic. Serena was competitive in every tournament and took the #2 seeded player right down to the wire at district. The competition will be trying to avoid Serena for the next 3 years. Charles Chukkiriyan – Junior Jobin James – Junior Chuck and Jobin were a very crafty doubles team who were very competitive in every tournament we played in. They really enjoyed calling out Daylan and Ricky at practice and beating them from time to time. These two have been very fun to coach and I am confident that they will have a very successful senior season. Girls Doubles Lisa Evans – Sophomore Natalie Hanson - Sophomore Lisa and Natalie began playing together in the Edgewood tournament just before district and made it all the way to the finals. They were very competitive at district and have a strong future in tennis. Both of these girls have great attitudes and personalities and are fun to coach. Alex Hanson Sophomore & Jadee Hankins - Freshman Alex and Jadee were a young team that never gave up and always fought for every point. They did a great job getting a first round victory at district and they it will be fun to watch them grow over the next few years. Boys Doubles Daylan Howig – Junior Ricky Phillips – Senior To say the least, these boys are goofy, but they always have fun. They were a great doubles team that complimented each other very well, even finishing each other’s sentences. Daylan and Ricky had an outstanding year, finishing with a 21-2 record, winning 1st place in 5 tournaments, including claiming the titles of District Champions, Regional Champions, and State Qualifiers. We wish Ricky the best of luck in the future and Daylan will be back next year to “let his skills pay the bills.” S U N N Y V A L E H I G H S C H O O L 2 0 1 4 A T H L E T I C B A N Q U E T

R AIDER T ENNIS 2014 Mixed Doubles Cole Hanson – Senior Maddie Foote - Senior These two are some of the most calm, cool, and collected kids I have coached. They are extremely coachable and very resilient. It was fun to watch them grow as a team throughout the year as they continued to get better every day. Cole has a great baseline game and Maddie was a warrior at the net. This play got them to the finals in almost all of our tournaments, as they claimed 2 tournament championships including a District Championship as well as a 3rd place finish at the regional tournament. Cole and Maddie are great individuals and will both be successful in their future endeavors! Justin Kenyon – Senior Malorie Layton - Junior The relationship that Justin and Malorie had on and off the court made them a great doubles team. They worked really well together and Justin’s power coupled with Malorie’s consistency made up great team play, earning them 3rd place at district, as they fell in a nail biter to the district runner-up. We wish Justin the best of luck next year and look forward to a very successful senior season for Malorie. R AIDER G OLF 2013-14 What a season for our Raider Golf teams! The 2013-14 season started back in the fall, with Evan Norlie winning the Richardson Shootout over at the Canyon Creek Golf Club. In the spring, Julie Nguyen had top honors in the Plano Invitational at the Firewheel Lakes course. The entire season was devoted to playing in 4 and 5A tournaments with our main goal being our district tournament. The preparation paid off with both boys and girls winning the District 12 2A Championship. With the district titles came a trip to the regionals in Stephenville. At regionals, the boys had a rough first day but shot much better the next round to finish in the middle of the pack. Our girls put together two solid rounds and were able to qualify for state. In the state meet in Austin, our girls experienced the intensity of a major tournament. Their first round was not what we had hoped for but they did come back strong on the second day and shot 48 strokes better than the previous day. With the team score of 395 on day two, they were able to place in the top ten (8th) and finish the season with a positive performance. L ADY R AIDER S OFTBALL 2014 The Lady Raider Softball team had a great season this year! This team was very young with only 2 seniors and 4 letter winners on the roster. Yet, despite our youth this team excelled. Our girls rose to the high challenges that our coaching staff put in place for this year and they have improved dramatically from the beginning of this year. Their hard work contributed to a fourth place finish in a tough district and allowed us to continue the 6-year playoff run that the Sunnyvale Lady Raiders have accomplished. We even finished with the second best season in school history! #2 Mackenzie Mings- Sophomore, Left Field Mackenzie always has a good attitude. You can count on her to work hard every day at practice. #3 Lisa Evans- Sophomore, 3rd Base 2nd Team All-District, Academic All-District Lisa is one of the hardest workers on the softball team. Always giving full effort. She is a constant encourager. #4 Arianna Lopez- Freshman Arianna has grown a lot in her first season of softball. She has improved tremendously since day one. #5 Barbara Forman- Freshman, Right Field HM All-District, Academic All-District Barbara works hard each day and it paid off for her with a great finish to this season. #6 Chloe Howard- Sophomore, 2nd Base Honorable Mention All-District Chloe is one of the toughest girls on the team. No matter what comes her way, even getting hit by a pitch, she will keep on fighting! #7 Kaylee Setser- Sophomore Kaylee is a very versatile fielder. We had to implement her in several different positions this year and she always knew her job. #8 Halle Campbell- Sophomore, Left Field Academic All-District Despite being hurt part of the season, Halle is a great encourager and shows up to work each day. #11 Marissa Munoz- Sophomore Academic All-District Marissa was injured at the end of the season, but continued to show up ready to work each day. #12 Hannah Laird- Junior, Catcher 1st Team All District, Academic All-District Hannah played a big role as our catcher and clean up hitter. She did a great job communicating when needed in the key points of games. #14 Ashley Cottingame- Freshman, 1st Base Honorable Mention All-District Ashley brought the fun to softball. She was always energetic and spirited. #15 Abigail White- Senior Abi played a big role in playing the DH this season. She is also a great encourager and enthusiastic. #16 Andrea Reil- Senior, Center Field 2nd Team All-District Andrea is the quickest player on the field. She did a great job in the outfield and led our team in steals on the season. #18 Maria Ray- Sophomore Academic All-District Maria was an outstanding encourager on the team. She was determined to bring out the liveliness in the dugout. #19 Karlee Williams- Freshman Karlee has an outstanding attitude. You will always see smiles from Karlee and she is great at lifting up a teammate. #10 Chanlynn Turner- Junior, Pitcher 1st Team All-District, Academic All-District Chanlynn pitched every game this season for the Raiders. She led us to our 14 wins and had 221 strikeouts on the year. You can see her passion for the game every time she takes the mound. #20 Calli Roark- Junior, Short Stop 1st Team All-District, Academic All-District Calli is a tough, hard-working teammate. She is a great player for us and anchors our infield. Our managers, Bailey Gleaves, Hannah Wilson and Laurie Niedermeier, were a constant help this season. If a player or coach needed anything, they were asking when, where, and how much. Their uplifting words and shouts of praise in the dugout kept the team encouraged at the perfect times. Our trainer, Mollie Garner, has been such a blessing to the Lady Raiders. She was there every day to lend a helping hand, fill the water jugs, grab band-aids and motivate the girls. I’d like to thank Coach Softley, Coach Laird and both the managers and trainers for all the time and energy they put forth to help this season be successful. R AIDER B ASEBALL 2014 High expectations came with the start of the 2014 Raider baseball season. The Raiders came into the season as the number one ranked team in the state in the pre-season polls. The 2014 edition of the Sunnyvale Raider baseball team picked up right where the 2013 team left off with our fourth straight tournament championship in our own Sunnyvale Invitational Tournament. We then proceeded to go 3-1 in the Mesquite Tournament against all 4A and 5A competition. We completed our tournament schedule by going undefeated in the Ponder Tournament. District 12-2A proved to be one of the toughest districts in the state but we finished the season as district champions for the third straight year. We are in the playoffs and are sporting a 20-5 season record. 2 Matt Dotson- Junior- Matt played JV for us this season but, for the second consecutive year, was brought up to the varsity for the playoffs. Matt has steadily improved over the past couple of seasons and will be a varsity player for us next season. 10 Brant Taylor- Junior- Brant has been an outstanding defensive player for us all season long. He is an outstanding outfielder as well as one of the best pitchers in the program. Brant will be huge for us the rest of the season as well as next year. 3 Zander Thompson- Junior- Zander saw a lot of time this season as a designated hitter. He has improved as the season has gone on and has seen many important at bats recently. He could be a key contributor to our playoff run. I have high expectations for him next season. 11 Joey Rosato- Junior- Joey has done a great job for us this season. He had a terrible knee injury during football season which, delayed the start of baseball for him. Just as expected, he worked tremendously hard and came back earlier than than was previously thought possible. He has picked up right where he left off last season and has been a tremendous defender. Joey is the spark plug of our team and will be one of our main guys next year. 4 Wesley Phillips – Senior- Wesley has been one of the best hitters to ever come through Sunnyvale. As our starting catcher, he has completely shut down the opponents running game this season and he has been just as dominant on the mound. Wesley is a leader and one of the fiercest competitors in our program. He has signed to play his college baseball at Cisco College and he will be greatly missed. 5 Evan Adrian- Junior- Evan was our starting catcher last season but, unfortunately, he has battled a hamstring injury all season. Evan is still the consummate team player as he has pulled double duty with rehab and still coming to every game and practice. Evan will without a doubt be one of our most important players next season. 6 Conner Mears – Junior- Conner has done a good job this season at doing whatever he is asked. He is capable of playing multiple positions defensively and has improved many aspects to his game. Conner will be a huge player for us next season. 7 Seth Metzger – Sophomore- Seth is following up his outstanding freshman year with an outstanding sophomore year. He has been one of our most consistent hitters and has shown good power. He has been our designated hitter for most of the season but he has dramatically improved his defense at first base as well. Seth will be a cornerstone of our team for years to come. 9 Ryan Cottingame – Senior- Ryan is a four year letterman and has played like it all year long. Ryan has done a tremendous job at several different positions for us this year. He has also been a steady force for us at the plate in one of the most important spots in the lineup. He has been an emotional leader for us for four years as well as one of the most complete players Sunnyvale has ever had. There are not many people I have ever enjoyed coaching more than Ryan Cottingame. S U N N Y V A L E H I G H S C H O O L 12 Lawson Ayo- Sophomore- Lawson decided to play this season after taking a two year hiatus from baseball. We are very thankful he did. Lawson has filled a hole for us by stepping in and becoming our starting shortstop. He has played really well there and has hit the ball all season long. Lawson will be a huge contributor the rest of this season and for the next two years. 13 Curt Fitzgerald- Sophomore- Curt played both JV and varsity this season. He spent most of the varsity season as our best pinch runner. Curt has the defensive skills to compete for a starting spot on the varsity next season. 15 Cash Goodhart- Freshman- Cash played both JV and varsity this season. He will go into next season with really high expectations. He has all the tools to be an outstanding player here in Sunnyvale. He should be one of our top pitchers as well as compete for a starting spot in the outfield. 16 Nathan Hawkins- Sophomore- Nathan has been terrific this season on the mound. He competes every single outing and is one of the best 2A pitchers in the state as a sophomore. He has also played a lot of outfield for us this season and has done a good job at that as well. I have no doubt that Nathan will continue to progress and will be one of the best pitchers anywhere, regardless of classification. 17 Dawson Williams- Freshman- Dawson played both JV and varsity this season. He has a terrific arm and got some varsity innings in this year on the mound. I expect the future is very bright for Dawson. 2 0 1 4 A T H L E T I C B A N Q U E T

R AIDER B ASEBALL 2014 18 Sam Shaver – Senior- Sam came into this season with high expectations and he has not disappointed. He has been solid in the outfield at multiple positions and has been a huge surprise at the plate. Sam came up with big hits at big times for us this season. He has been a joy to coach for the past four years. Kaily Graham- Manager Simone Gonyaw- Student Trainer/Manager Julia McKnight- Student Trainer 20 Jake Wilcox – Senior- Jake came into this season as one of the top pitchers in the state. He has done nothing to disappoint. Jake has been dominant in his role as staff ace as he has struck out over 100 batters for the third consecutive season. He also was a huge contributor at the plate this season. He has been our leadoff hitter and by far, one of the most consistent guys on the team. Jake will be continuing his career on a baseball scholarship at the University of Texas at Arlington. Tanner Alford Cody Coldwell Matt Dodson Nolan Fansler Garrett Ferguson Curt Fitzgerald Kyle Garza Cash Goodhart Brandon Harris Jimmie Henson Ben Settle Logan Welsh Dawson Williams 21 Jose Castillo – Freshman- Jose has been outstanding as a freshman starter on a state ranked team. He has been one of our best hitters all season as well as being a really talented defender. He was never intimidated by a situation and will be a huge player for us for the rest of the season. R AIDER S TUDENT T RAINERS 2013-14 Seniors: Sophomores: Simone Gonyaw: I am a trainer for the Sunnyvale Raider Baseball team. I decided to be in the dugout because not only do I love the game but I love the boys who play. These guys play their game whole heartedly and to me there is no one who deserves to succeed more than they do. Sports medicine to me means taking care of my boys to the best of my ability and keep them on the path to state qualifiers. Charlie Linville: This year sports medicine has meant not only building upon a new family, but being able to see something new or something old in a new perspective. This year has meant a lot and I’m glad to say I became a trainer. Mollie Garner: Sports Medicine has played a huge role in my senior year, as I was a trainer for football, basketball and softball. It has been great to learn so much about sports medicine. Don’t get me wrong, it is very challenging, but worth it in the end. I loved the training staff we had this year. From the hot two-a-day practices to the Friday night lights to venting out to each other. We become so much more than just a sports medicine team; we became a family. I am so grateful that I not only got this chance, but I got it my senior year. I will forever cherish these memories. Juniors: Hannah Laird: To me, sports medicine meant being the team behind the team. I loved getting to work with all athletes, injured and healthy. I felt as if without the hard work we put in as a staff, many of the athletic achievements Sunnyvale received this year would not have been possible. I have learned many things while training, included but not limited to treatment for injuries. Coach Wangler taught us many lessons that will stick with me for a lifetime. Responsibility and tact are two very important things that Coach Wangler stressed this year and was a skill passed down to each and every trainer. It was a great year and I cannot wait for next season as a returning trainer. Louis Eguia: What sports medicine has taught me is how to be more responsible and how to take care of something if someone gets hurt. This will help me in the future. Coach Wangler has taught me how to look at things at a different angle. Abi Morgan: Sports medicine has meant so much to me. It has taught me many lessons as well has Coach Wangler. He has taught me to have self confidence, to have faith within myself and to never doubt myself. Sports medicine means to always be a leader, trust your fellow trainers and athletes and to always have a happy heart. I have been blessed to be a part of this incredible family. It has made me more confident in myself learning its ok to make mistakes and never hesitate to ask a question; after all that’s how you learn to be better. I enjoyed being a trainer over the last two years. It has been incredible. I want to thank all the trainers, Coach Wangler and coaches and athletes. S U N N Y V A L E H I G H S C H O O L Alexis McKinney: Sports medicine means a lot to me. It has taught me to be responsible. It has given me opportunities to have friendships I would have never had. It teaches me to be very hard working. Besides Coach Wangler teaching us how to help athletes, he has taught me many things that will help me in life. The trainers are a team that doesn’t always get recognized, but we still show up and help all athletes. Not everyone would want to show up before and after practice, but Coach Wangler has showed us to have fun and always smile. Jim Threet: To me sports medicine means a journey. The journey of working with the players, coaching staff and other trainers and becoming a tight-knit group as the season progresses. The journey of never knowing how the next game will go, uneventful to even tragic. The journey of early mornings and late nights. The journey of long bus rides and heart breaking playoff losses. And finally the journey of learning the field of sports medicine, from gameday set ups and pregame treatment to crisis management and rehab protocols. This is the biggest journey and truly is what sports medicine means to me. Hannah Piccola: I have loved being on the training team this year. It has been a fun year with each individual. Training has taught me a lot; like being responsible and getting the job done. I have made a lot of new friends from being a trainer and it is a blessing to know them. Training has its challenges and a lot of late nights, but I wouldn’t change it. I would like to thank Coach Wangler for letting me be apart of the staff. He has taught me about responsibility and many life lessons. It was fun working with everyone and all the athletes. We have good memories that we can hold on to and I am looking forward to the new memories we will be making. 3rd Year Resident Jordan Kelley: What sports medicine has meant to me is to learn how to take care of athletes with treatments by putting heat on them. Getting them well and getting them back on the playing field. The best part about sports medicine is going to games, practices and traveling with the team. During the 100 degree heat in football it was hot. I like being around the players and teams in every sport and I really like being around the coaches. 2 0 1 4 A T H L E T I C B A N Q U E T
