R AIDER B ASEBALL 2014 High expectations came with the start of the 2014 Raider baseball season The Raiders came into the season as the number one ranked team in the state in the pre season polls The 2014 edition of the Sunnyvale Raider baseball team picked up right where the 2013 team left off with our fourth straight tournament championship in our own Sunnyvale Invitational Tournament We then proceeded to go 3 1 in the Mesquite Tournament against all 4A and 5A competition We completed our tournament schedule by going undefeated in the Ponder Tournament District 12 2A proved to be one of the toughest districts in the state but we finished the season as district champions for the third straight year We are in the playoffs and are sporting a 20 5 season record 2 Matt Dotson Junior Matt played JV for us this season but for the second consecutive year was brought up to the varsity for the playoffs Matt has steadily improved over the past couple of seasons and will be a varsity player will be huge for us the rest of the season as well as next year 3 Zander Thompson Junior Zander saw a lot of time this season as a designated hitter He has improved as the season has gone on and has seen many important at bats recently He could be a key contributor to our playoff run I have high expectations for him next season 11 Joey Rosato Junior Joey has done a great job for us this season He had a terrible knee injury during football season which delayed the start of baseball for him Just as expected he worked tremendously hard and came back earlier than than was previously thought possible He has picked up right where he left off last season and has been a tremendous defender Joey is the spark plug of our team and will be one of our main guys next year 4 Wesley Phillips Senior Wesley has been one of the best hitters to ever come through Sunnyvale As our starting catcher he has completely shut down the opponents running game this season and he has been just as dominant on the mound Wesley is a leader and one of the fiercest competitors in our program He has signed to play his college baseball at Cisco College and he will be greatly missed 5 Evan Adrian Junior Evan was our starting catcher last season but unfortunately he has battled a hamstring injury all season Evan is still the consummate team player as he has pulled double duty with rehab and still coming to every game and practice Evan will without a doubt be one of our most important players next season 6 Conner Mears Junior Conner has done a good job this season at doing whatever he is asked He is capable of playing multiple positions defensively and has improved many aspects to his game Conner will be a huge player for us next season 7 Seth Metzger Sophomore Seth is following up his varsity next season 15 Cash Goodhart Freshman Cash played both JV and varsity this season He will go into next season with really high expectations He has all the tools to be an outstanding player here in Sunnyvale He should be one of our top pitchers as well as compete for a starting spot in the outfield 16 Nathan Hawkins Sophomore Nathan has been terrific this season on the mound He competes every single outing and is one of the best 2A pitchers in the state as a sophomore He has also played a lot of outfield for us this season and has done a good job at that as well I have no doubt that R AIDER S TUDENT T RAINERS 2013 14 Seniors Sophomores Simone Gonyaw I am a trainer for the Sunnyvale Raider Baseball team I decided to be in the dugout because not only do I love the game but I love the boys who play These guys play their game whole heartedly and to me there is no one who deserves to succeed more than they do Sports medicine to me means taking care of my boys to the best of my ability and keep them on the path to state qualifiers Charlie Linville This year sports medicine has meant not only building upon a new family but being able to see something new or something old in a new perspective This year has meant a lot and I m glad to say I became a trainer Mollie Garner Sports Medicine has played a huge role in my senior year as I was a trainer for football basketball and softball It has been great to learn so much about sports medicine Don t get me wrong it is very challenging but worth it in the end I loved the training staff we had this year From the hot two a day practices to the Friday night lights to venting out to each other We become so much more than just a sports medicine team we became a family I am so grateful that I not only got this chance but I got it my senior year I will forever cherish these memories Juniors Hannah Laird To me sports medicine meant being the team behind the team I loved getting to work with all athletes injured and healthy I felt as if without the hard work we put in as a staff many of the athletic achievements Sunnyvale received this year would not have been possible I have learned many things while training included but not limited to treatment for injuries Coach Wangler taught us many lessons that will stick with me for a lifetime Responsibility and tact are two very important things that Coach Wangler stressed this year and was a skill passed down to each and every trainer It was a great year and I cannot wait for next season as a returning trainer Louis Eguia What sports medicine has taught me is how to be more responsible and how to take care of something if someone gets hurt This will help me in the future Coach Wangler has taught me how to look at things at a different angle Abi Morgan Sports medicine has meant so much to me It has taught me many lessons as well has Coach Wangler He has taught me to have self confidence to have faith within myself and to never doubt myself Sports medicine means to always be a leader trust your fellow trainers and athletes and to always have a happy heart I have been blessed to be a part of this incredible family It has made me more confident in myself learning its ok to make mistakes and never hesitate to ask a question after all that s how you learn to be better I enjoyed being a trainer over the last two years It has been incredible I want to thank all the trainers Coach Wangler and coaches and athletes S U N N Y V A L E H I G H S C H O O L Alexis McKinney Sports medicine means a lot to me It has taught me to be responsible It has given me opportunities to have friendships I would have never had It teaches me to be very hard working Besides Coach Wangler teaching us how to help athletes he has taught me many things that will help me in life The trainers are a team that doesn t always get recognized but we still show up and help all athletes Not everyone would want to show up before and after practice but Coach Wangler has showed us to have fun and always smile Jim Threet To me sports medicine means a journey The journey of working with the players coaching staff and other trainers and becoming a tight knit group as the season progresses The journey of never knowing how the next game will go uneventful to even tragic The journey of early mornings and late nights The journey of long bus rides and heart breaking playoff losses And finally the journey of learning the field of sports medicine from gameday set ups and pregame treatment to crisis management and rehab protocols This is the biggest journey and truly is what sports medicine means to me Hannah Piccola I have loved being on the training team this year It has been a fun year with each individual Training has taught me a lot like being responsible and getting the job done I have made a lot of new friends from being a trainer and it is a blessing to know them Training has its challenges and a lot of late nights but I wouldn t change it I would like to thank Coach Wangler for letting me be apart of the staff He has taught me about responsibility and many life lessons It was fun working with everyone and all the athletes We have good memories that we can hold on to and I am looking forward to the new memories we will be making 3rd Year Resident Jordan Kelley What sports medicine has meant to me is to learn how to take care of athletes with treatments by putting heat on them Getting them well and getting them back on the playing field The best part about sports medicine is going to games practices and traveling with the team During the 100 degree heat in football it was hot I like being around the players and teams in every sport and I really like being around the coaches 2 0 1 4 A T H L E T I C B A N Q U E T
