ScholarSkills Learning Center www scholarskills com 718 258 4647 Here are the 4 Steps to improving Reading Comprehension Step One Sentence Comprehension Students must learn sentence comprehension because sentence comprehension is the key to reading comprehension When students learn how writers organize words to create meaning then they are better prepared to understand the meaning of what has been written Students should be taught the various parts that words can play in sentences They should learn about the parts that verbs nouns adverbs adjectives and prepositions play to create logical relationships within sentences All of this can be done without using a hefty boring grammar book All students have to learn is six key questions that will help them to interview each sentence to discover what part each word or group of words is playing Once students understand that sentences are created by putting words into relationships with each other then they will be able to read and write more e ectively ScholarSkills Learning Center www scholarskills com 718 258 4647

ScholarSkills Learning Center www scholarskills com 718 258 4647 Step Two Paragraph comprehension Students need to understand that there are relationships within and between sentences Teaching them transitional words and phrases that establish logical relationships between sentences is a key to paragraph comprehension and reading comprehension If students can recognize the relationships between sentences then they will be able to follow the flow of ideas throughout a paragraph or essay and will also develop an analytical view of reading Step Three Vocabulary acquisition Students need e ective systematic instruction in how words are created from the roots and they also need to know the di erent meanings words can have in several contexts Vocabulary is best acquired through a combination of systematic instruction in word parts such as roots and prefixes and a rich expansive reading diet Step Four Expansive supplementary reading Students need to read a wide array of complex fictional and informational texts Meaningful education and e ective test preparation do not begin or end with a series of assigned readings from last year s exam Students need to read substantive exciting materials such as the Book of Virtues which is a compendium of great stories ScholarSkills Learning Center www scholarskills com 718 258 4647

ScholarSkills Learning Center www scholarskills com 718 258 4647 This requires time dedication and sacrifice on your part But again I m only writing for serious parents If you would like to learn more about what the types of reading comprehension skills your child should have learned this year and what your child is going to be learning in the next grade level click on the links below for a grade by grade breakdown of the learning objectives for each grade level Now this is not a perfect system and children will often fall into ranges but you should have some sort of measurement to know whether your children have learned what they should have learned and you should also know what your children will be learning when they go back to school In this way you can help them to get out of bed and get ahead Here are some of the examples of the books that my children have read and here is the curriculum and method we have used as parents over the years Yes my wife and I are educators but we have never left the education of our children up to people we did not know We homeschooled them built a school around them and when we finally placed them into schools that were run by others we constantly surveyed their work and kept teaching them at home Remember you are the first and biggest di erence in growing your children s intelligence ScholarSkills Learning Center www scholarskills com 718 258 4647
