Sincerely, The Editorial TeamZachry Group’s Employee Assistance Program teamThis has been quite a year, so far. For me, it’s been a mix of bitter and sweet. We envisioned, and planned for, 2024 to be a year of recognition and celebration of our 100-year anniversary. It has been that, at least in part. It has also been a year of significant challenges, primarily because of our Chapter 11 filing and the issues that necessitated that very difficult decision. Yet, in the face of these challenges, this year has also been characterized by the determination and caring of our employees, overall strong organizational performance, and overwhelming support from our customers and suppliers.Despite the legal and financial hurdles we’ve encoun-tered, I am pleased to say we will emerge from this period as wiser, more capable, and well-positioned for future growth. We have achieved new levels of teamwork, communication, and resilience. With the Golden Pass LNG settlement behind us, we are shifting our focus to completing and exiting from our court-supervised restructuring process in the fall, and on further improving the health of the company. Our time, energy, and assets are being redistributed to new priorities and the outstanding work that is being done across our business. In this newsletter, you will see many accomplishments and bright spots that were made possible because of your effort and good work. I hope you recognize the important impact of your contributions. From innovative projects to safety milestones to acts of generosity in our communities, each highlight reflects our steadfast commitment to each other and our culture. More importantly, this newsletter helps capture our durability and optimism. Zachry earned his first opportunity in construction when Webb County officials asked to design a plan for paving a dirt road connecting Laredo to Corpus Christi. In 1924, H.B. “Pat” Zachry established a construction company in Laredo, Texas, which has since grown into the successful engineering, procurement, and construction enterprise known as Zachry Group. It will launch in 2024 and source low-carbon ethanol to produce SAF and renewable diesel fuel. Confidential Customer: Off Spec Basin (OSB) UpgradesZachry Group was selected to execute the detailed engineering and design for two projects in the Gulf Coast. These projects have helped set a precedent for an innovative workshare strategy with Zachry Philippines (ZPI). ZPI performed approximately 80% of the project work and was engaged in the estimating and proposal development effort, which helped ensure ZPI and ZEC alignment and communication. These milestones have helped enhance multi-office project execution, leverage workshare as a strategic advantage, deliver results effectively and efficiently, and contribute to our company’s growth and client satisfaction. ZACHRY ENGINEERINGNET PowerZachry Group began the front-end engineering and design (FEED) of NET Power’s utility-scale power plant in 2023 and is approach-ing completion of that FEED effort. This will be a ground-breaking project as the world’s first utility-scale, carbon-free power plant with near-zero emissions.Calpine BaytownZachry Engineering recently completed FEED for the Calpine Baytown Decarbonization Project, designed to capture 95% of CO2 emissions at the Baytown Energy Facility. In July, the Department of Energy Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations awarded Calpine funding for “Phase 1” activities that will further the engineering and design of the project and advance project planning to refine the project cost estimate and schedule. Calpine Baytown is a natural gas-fired power plant that uses combined-cycle and cogeneration technologies for cleaner power generation. Carbon Capture ProjectThe Omaha engineering team is currently completing FEED for a ground-breaking carbon capture project in the Midwest. This utility-scale coal-fired power generation plant will apply advanced technology from two separate technology companies for carbon capture and sulfur removal—the first of its size and scale to do so in the United States. Upon approval of conceptual engineering, Zachry PROJECTSOPPDIn September 2021, Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) awarded Zachry Group an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for two simple-cycle power plants in Omaha, Nebraska. Zachry Group is directly responsible for handling the design, construction, and startup of the two facilities. Engineering and procurement activities kicked off shortly after the contract award. The Standing Bear Lake Station (SBLS) project is a new, 150 MW natural gas power facility, located in Douglas County, Nebraska. The Turtle Creek Station (TCS) project is a new, 450 MW simple cycle natural gas power facility located in Sarpy County, Nebraska. Both plants will be fueled by pipeline-quality natural gas with ultra-low sulfur diesel as backup. Construction teams mobilized to the sites in June 2022. Both SBLS and TCS projects are nearing the end of construction and entering the initial phases of startup and commissioning. Both projects are scheduled to achieve substantial completion in November 2024. GTPPZachry Group and joint venture partner DL USA (ZDJV) mobilized to the Golden Triangle Polymers Project (GTPP) job site in August of 2023. They have completed the piling program and are in the middle of completing the underground, site work, and concrete works. The site team is ramping up, adding hundreds of additional employees, and has already erected about 10% of the steel. With a smaller plot area of 900 feet by 900 feet but with the vertical nature of the CPChem Martec Technology, the site landscape is changing significantly with the installation of equipment and start of above-ground piping in the summer and fall of 2024. The tallest structure will be as high as 300 feet. The ZDJV team received a significant amount of long lead items such as loop reactors, purge column, and reactor dump tank, critical equipment for the polymer plant. The site team is also slated to receive the most important equipment extruders for the plant from Coperion in Germany this fall. September 2024 ZACHRY CONNECTIONS 98ZACHRY CONNECTIONS September 2024John Wilke Vice President, Enterprise Services Moving into a modern cloud HCM technology stack is a huge step forward in helping set the stage for Zachry’s long-term business strategies. I appreciate the extensive work and preparation our project team members, enterprise employees, and business leaders contributed to this massively scaled transformation project. This technology transformation will bring tremendous long-term value and safety to our employees, our businesses, and our customers. Byte-sized BreakthroughAfter years of preparation by the Project Maverick team, we are thrilled to have fully transitioned from Zachry Group’s legacy Cyborg system to the cutting-edge Oracle Fusion Cloud Human Capital Management (HCM) — a modern cloud-based employee data platform. This transition has empowered employees to self-service and manage their individual HR data for increased efficiency and accuracy, and advance Zachry’s people analytics. This long-awaited digital upgrade could not have been possible without the Project Maverick team and Change Champions. Thanks to their hard work and advocacy for employees, our organization will have substantial improvements to HR data-driven processes and employee data management. One of the most notable outcomes has been providing our frontline craft workforce with the ability to independently manage their personal and payroll data for the first time in company history. This global technology transformation project has reached every Zachry employee, and we acknowledge the enterprise will experience some short-term challenges to business process changes. We appreciate your patience and support throughout these challenges. Ultimately, our collective effort will yield momentous advancement for Zachry — now and in the future. ENTERPRISE SERVICESMaintenance and Turnaround Services UpdatesSo far in 2024, the Services group has experienced success in many forms. JVIC proudly constructed six massive pipe rack modules for PLNG, each weighing over 1,800 tons. The Madison Industrial Services Team surpassed two years without a single recordable incident across all its industries and locations. Last year, three-quarters of our maintenance sites earned the Heart of Zachry safety award, and we anticipate an increase in that number this year. We are excited about the strategic growth ahead in turnarounds, small capital EPC projects, maintenance sites, and the expansion of our current services.September 2024 ZACHRY CONNECTIONS 9 SERVICESFabrication UpdatesIn May of 2023, JVIC began pipe fabrication to support construction for the Plaquemines LNG (PLNG) project. All three pipe fabrication shops (Pasadena, Freeport, and Geismar) strategized to align on a common goal of fabricating pipelines for one of Zachry’s largest EPC projects. Thanks to the hard work of over 300 JVIC employees, we have fabricated an impressive 25,000 spools of pipe – the largest amount of fabrication work in Zachry’s history. Not only was this new record achieved, but they also maintained a radiography (X-ray) rejection rate that was significantly lower than the industry standard rate of 3%.INCHES IN DIAMETER963,000+963,000+PIPE SPOOLS25,000+25,000+WELDS71,00071,000SAFE CATCHES14,00014,000Photo/Nick Grancharoff 8 ZACHRY CONNECTIONS September 2023SERVICES’ CONNECTIONS:Reflecting on your life and your career, what advice would you give to your younger self or someone just starting their career at Zachry? Don’t become stagnant in your career. Learn as much as you can and use your colleagues as resources. We have the best of the best, so learn from them. What legacy do you hope to leave? I hope to be remembered for what I always say: ‘Inspect what you expect’; meaning hold yourself accountable and follow through with checking the work that you assign. I also want my legacy to be that I encouraged and challenged everyone to grow personally and professionally and that I was someone who invested in the growth of others. Thinking about What’s Most Important, which value has resonated with you most during your time at Zachry? “Do the Right Thing” applies to my personal and professional life. I want to always perform quality work and do right by employees. Honesty and integrity are also important. If one fails, we all fail. What brought you to Zachry, and what has kept you here? I was a collegiate basketball player in Hanover, Indiana, and I remember visiting my parents between semesters and games; they both worked for Zachry. After college, I decided to apply and was hired as a millwright helper in 2005, not knowing I’d be here nearly 20 years later. What’s kept me at Zachry is the people and watching my colleagues excel in their careers. Seeing their promotions was encouraging for me. Zachry has always been like a family that challenges and supports each other with personal and professional mentorship. How would you describe Zachry to a prospective employee? If you are willing to invest in Zachry, then Zachry is willing to invest in you. You need to be willing to step outside your comfort zone and not stay stagnant. Zachry will help you achieve your short- and long-term goals. Also, because it’s a family-owned business, it feels like a family. What motivates you at work? My employees. When people are eager and want to learn, it keeps me motivated. What is your most favorite project you’ve ever worked on? Wolf Hollow II power plant in Granbury, Texas. At this project, I feel like I grew up with my coworkers and we reached milestones together, whether it was superinten-dents, construction managers, or other promotions. September 2024 ZACHRY CONNECTIONS 1514ZACHRY CONNECTIONS September 2024Early on in life, I learned that each decision I made would either take me along a wide road or a narrow one, and that if I chose wisely, it might feel as if I hadn’t. I think we all know the truth in this. While both paths might take us in the same direction, the challenges we face are much different. The narrow road is fraught with roadblocks and struggles we need to subdue as we PHOTOGRAPHER’S PERSPECTIVE14 ZACHRY CONNECTIONS September 2024climb to the hilltop, while the wide road offers its easy going, open arms, hiding the challenges until we get there. Sometimes we’re lucky and it’s not too late. We get a do-over and realize that the real learning happens in second chances. As I wrote this, I couldn’t help thinking about Jack & Jill. Remember the nursery rhyme? It’s possible they took the wide road and that Jack certainly learned this truth. Jill, too, as she came tumbling after. They got a second chance, though. And that time they succeeded in getting the pail of water. It just took a bit longer than they’d hoped.I think most of us here at Zachry Group have learned to choose the narrow road – that’s what makes us as good as we are. Our quality levels, our safety record, the fact that we never quit throughout our hundred-year journey, all speak to our pursuit of excellence. And we can truly say the view from the top is grand.— Nick Grancharoff Corporate PhotographerSeptember 2024 ZACHRY CONNECTIONS 15Omaha Public Power District site at Standing Bear | Photo/Nick Grancharoff
