2019 Lakota Nation Invitational • December 18th - 21st, 2019 • www.lakotanationinvitational.com 55Honoring the FlagFor years, Veterans have wanted to salute the U.S. Flag during the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem instead of just placing their hand over their heart. Now they can. A Congressional Amendment specifically states that “members of the Armed Forces and Veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute.” The salute is a form of honor and respect, representing pride in one’s military service. Veterans and service members continue representing the military services even when not in uniform. The following song will be sung prior to various sessions of the State Tournament.THE LAKOTA FLAG SONG(taken from "Songs and Dances of the Lakota")In this the Lakota, the white people, and the "foreign people" (other Indians) used to consider each other as enemies. Now we exist as a country and as one people, we will consider each other as friends because of that, we will gather ourselves under this flag. We will die for it, or defend for each other under it. So that is the reason we will live under the flag, the United States flag. We will be as one. So be it. That is why we sing this song. The translation of the Lakota Flag Song to English is as follows:The President's flag will stand forever.Under it, the people will grow, so I do this.Mercy rule shall be used for all regular season, Region, and Sweet 16 contests. When the point differential reaches 30 or more points in the 2nd half, the clock will continue to run. The clock will only be stopped for free throws and timeouts. Regular timing will be used if the score differential drops back to less than 20 points.Games will be two 16 minute halves

2019 Lakota Nation Invitational • December 18th - 21st, 2019 • www.lakotanationinvitational.com 1414Háu Mitákuyepi,I would like to take this opportunity and welcome you to the 43rd Annual Lakota Nation Invitational. As we inch closer to the last few weeks of this decade, preparations are well underway in planning the next two years of LNI. As we continue to grow as an organization, we look forward to the completion of the Civic Center Expansion Project in 2021. We have long been ready for a new facility and a 250,000 square foot arena, henceforth to be called the “Monument.” If ever there was a reason to raise a monument in the heart of this sacred land, let it enshrine a history of our victory. A victory the Lakota Nation Invitational has brought back to the Black Hills as a true testament, marking a commitment to our children for over four decades. It is through this dedication, that the LNI continues to bring together the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ, our many allies and friends from all walks of life, unlike any other event. The Lakota Nation Invitational will continue to build on an unforgettable history of monumental achievement as the “magnum opus” of sport, culture, arts and academics in the State of South Dakota. With that said, I want to encourage all students and participants to have fun, extend your hand in the spirit of sportsmanship and build new friendships. I want to thank the parents, grandparents, extended relatives, educators, schools, coaches and the thousands of fans who attend LNI each year for showing your support. As a youngster playing little league baseball in Rapid City, SD, his coach a Lutheran minister, on more than one occasion produce a copy of Steve’s birth certificate to verify his legal age as he stepped to the pitcher’s mound. The opponent’s disbelieving parents and coach couldn’t fathom that this man-child athlete was of legal age to compete in their juvenile athletic bubble. But here he was ready to play, with that infectious grin that made easy friendships. Even his smile was huge. From his early childhood athletic exploits into junior high to high school through his college years are woven a string of remarkable individual and team accomplishments that defy comparison. By the time Steve was a starting forward on the 1969 Rapid City Cobbler State “ A “ Basketball championship team as a junior, he had been on the losing side of only one scheduled cage game in his formative years. And the power forward was a true athlete. In the fall of his junior year in 1968, Steve’s Cobbler football team played Sioux Falls O’Gorman for the mythical State “ A “ championship football title in Rapid City. During junior and senior championship years the, the Cobbler basketball team was voted in the polls as the top State “ A “ basketball team of both the 1969 and 1970 seasons, winning the State “A “ Basketball Tournament outright in 1969 with a narrow miss the following year. Steve’s outstanding play on the hard court was a big contributing factor to the forty-one consecutive wins over a South Dakota basketball opponents during this two-year period.By earning class “A “ All-State football and basketball honors during his high school athletic career, Steve joined an elite group of athletes who have accomplished the rare individual feat of dual sport all-state honors. And it didn’t stop there. At Dakota Wesleyan University, he continued his athletic excellence on title winning basketball and football in the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference. In 1974, he was named all SDIC and all District in football and in 1975 he earned a tryout as a free agent with the Dallas Cowboys. He graduated with a Bachelor of the Arts in sociology from Dakota Wesleyan University. In 1998 Steve was inducted into the DWU Athletic Hall of Fame. But it was after his formal education that Withorne, perhaps made his greatest athletic impact. At a time when few Lakota/Dakota basketball and football referees were given the opportunity to officiate playoff high school athletic events, Steve broke the barrier for minority officials to be an active participant in the district, region, and state tournament picture. His competence, and revered athleticism paved the way the way for the minority official to be truly recognized for playoff consideration.

From birth Waylon had to overcome several adversities. In spite of having a mild form of autism and having to go through heart surgery at the the Children’s Hospital in Seattle, WA, he never allowed anything to keep him from chasing his dreams. One of his dreams was to play basketball at Pine Ridge School. After taking his basketball physical, it was discovered that he had scoliosis and yet he never gave up. When he started playing basketball for the Pine Ridge Thorpes, he was the happiest boy on earth! At times he would get a little down and once he said dad, why does everything bad always have to happen to me? I gave him the only answer I could give him. I said God knew you would handle it and handle it gracefully, and he said ok dad, I get it. From that time on he chose to give his best on and off the court. He loved helping everyone around him. His love and concern of others was a gift from God. His life was cut short on February 23, 2018, but he lived his life to the fullest everyday. If there was ever an Angel to walk on this earth, it was Waylon. If Waylon was here today, he would say keep chasing your dreams never allow anything to cause you to ever give up!Waylon Cheyenne CashThe Waylon Cash Inspirational Award

Will was a good athlete in many sports. In Will’s sophomore year he started playing for the varsity of the THORPES. At only 5’7” he was dynamite. He never gave up no matter how much they were down. Coach Gustafson told the news papers we need to get him the ball he is one of best shooters in South Dakota. He averaged 20 points a game . One game he scored 49 points so that brought his average up to 25 per game. That 49 points still is a record for Pine Ridge high school and the state. There were no 3 pointers in those days so that was quite a feat. Will was named an all-state for South Dakota, WSD All conference ,and qualified for the state track meet in the sprint merely. When Will was 18 he tried out for the Cincinnati Reds, a pro baseball team. He did make the team they wanted him to play shortstop but Will wanted to pitch so he walked away. He is survived by two sons, Don and Veryln, and he has joined his deceased son, Jon Garnier. He also is survived by many grandchildren. His mighty Thorps spirit will live on in our youth of today. Will GarnierSponsoring Most 3 Points in Memory of

2019 Lakota Nation Invitational • December 18th - 21st, 2019 • www.lakotanationinvitational.com 8282Mary Jane Stepp “Dakota Winyan” Crow Creek High School Fort Thompson, SD Mary Stepp is an enrolled member of the Crow Creek Hunkpati Tribe. She has two children Shavonne and Evan. She lived her whole life in Fort Thompson, SD. She worked for the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe in the Finance Office for over 25 years and 13 years for the Lodestar Casino where she was employed at the time of her passing. Mary worked for the Boys and Girls Club in her younger years sharing her passion for sports and supporting the youth. She put on many basketball, volleyball and softball tournaments for the youth in our community. Mary dedicated her whole life to supporting the Crow Creek Chieftains and Lady Chieftains Athletics in all sports even having her very own spot in the gym. Rain, Snow or Sleet if the game was on, Mary was there. Mary was going through her fight with Breast Cancer during her daughter Shavonne’s high school career yet still never missed a single game. Mary was known to many as Grandma Mary or Momma MJay as she took it upon herself to take care of so many. She was always the first to greet anyone, which led her to her making so many friends throughout Native Country. Mary’s proudest moment was when her daughter Shavonne was named the head coach of the Crow Creek Lady Chieftains during the 2018-2019 basketball season. Mary was always the first to help support all of the youth fundraisers. She was always writing letters to the tribal entities to help sponsor the youth traveling teams and if that didn’t work out, she was having lunch sales to try and raise funds to help support traveling teams for entry fees, gas money and rooms. She took around a youth basketball team named “the Toon Squad” to multiple tournaments throughout the state. Mary made her journey in July but her presence, memory and never faltering support of the Chieftains and Lady Chieftains will live on in all of the people’s lives she has touched. Public Service AwardsMary Jane Stepp - Crow CreekMrs. Jolene Arrow graduated from Marty Indian School in 1980. She came to work at Marty Indian School, off and on over the years, starting in 1981. Prior to pursuing a teaching career, Edwin served in the United States Navy for 21 years - retiring in 2004. He completed his Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Minnesota in 2007 prior to teaching at CCTS. She graduated from Chadron State College, in 1987, with Majors in Home Economics and Business Education. Her teaching career also began in 1987 when she taught Home Economics at Wolf Creek School. In 1989, she joined her Thorpe Family. A year later, Beth graduated with a Master’s Degree in School Counseling. She is profoundly grateful for 32 years of being surrounded by amazing and talented students. She considers them the best gifts of her work.Beth is married to her best friend, Brian. They have 3 adult children.Pine Ridge High School feels blessed to have Beth as a teacher in our school. She has been a Family and Consumer Science teacher at Pine Ridge since she began in 1989. The home economics area is one that few choose as a career but thankfully Beth has and it has made a difference in thousands of people’s lives. Her students have learned cooking skills from Mrs. Kizer that have fed children and, in more than a few cases, grandchildren. Young Lakota have cooked romantic dinners for future spouses and helped feed their families while still in school thanks to what they have learned from Beth. Her Textiles class has helped students make traditional ribbon skirts, quilts, pillows, and many other projects that have allowed them to work on their own regalia and other clothing for their families. It has also showed them how to mend and take care of their clothes when they can only afford precious few articles of clothing. The Child Development class that Beth teaches has also taught many students better ways of raising children and how to properly take care of their children so that they can create a stronger next generation. These skills are unfortunately a dying art. However, thanks to Beth Kizer, there are many Lakotas of all ages that have these life skills that they can pass on to their children to keep the knowledge alive and well. Beth has made a lasting positive impact on the people she has dedicated her life to. Her teaching along with her caring heart and compassionate warmth, have helped many students make it through rough patches and days when they would have otherwise dropped out or worse. She makes Pine Ridge School a more cheerful and welcoming place and we are eternally grateful for her presence every day.Edwin L. Isburg - Crow CreekBeth Kizer - Pine Ridge

2019 Lakota Nation Invitational • December 18th - 21st, 2019 • www.lakotanationinvitational.com 104104 Not many know the important role that Birgil Kills Straight played in the very beginning of the Lakota Nation Basketball Invitational at the Rushmore Civic Center in Rapid City. Today, the rich agenda of the tournament features not only exciting basketball, but an array of cultural doings as a connection to and remembrance of the heritage, customs, and traditions of South Dakota Indian Nations. Birgil, who went on to meet our relatives on February 10th, 2019, played an all signicant part of the proud parade of athletics and cultural activities that culminates each year.Birgil would observe years later, “ You know our people came to Pe’Sla from all over the prairie. They celebrated Nationhood there by performing several of our Seven Sacred Rites. One was ‘Throwing the Ball’. This LNI is pretty close to the purpose of this rite, which was in bring the people together. ” Back in the mid-1970’s, Birgil Kills Straight was chair of the Little Wound School Board and then became Executive Director of Little Wound School. He steered the school in becoming the 2nd school in the United States to take control of a school from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. His leadership was all about tribal and individual sovereignty and especially in advancing control of Indian learning. In 1978, Tom Allen and Dave Archambault, Sr. would ask Birgil to take a huge risk to approve funding to rent the Rapid City Civic Center for the All Indian Basketball tourney that was being held in the Pine Ridge gym. The facility was becoming and was too small to host all the lovers of the fast brand of Indian basketball. Birgil, being the visionary that he was would listen, he would take some time to think about it and came back deciding to take the gamble !Birgil saw a vision of what the tournament would become. “ A showcase for Lakota youth in many athletic, academic, cultural and artistic areas.” His decision as executive director of Little Wound School would open the door for a Lakota Winter Classic. The rest is history. Chuck Cuny and Brian Brewer would become tournament managers after the rst few years and take the tournament to one of the largest events held in South Dakota, and easily the hugest and greatest Indian basketball tournament in the world. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson were blessed with a very large family that included eight sons and four daughters. Four of these eight sons served in the armed forces overseas during WWII. An article from a local newspaper at the time recognized Elgin, Leroy, Harry, and Victor Thompson for not just for their heroics but also commended them all for volunteering and not needing to be called to service, they all passed perfect examinations and were immediately taken into service.Elgin was the rst of his brothers to enlist with the other three following his lead not too long afterwards. Elgin H. Thompson enlisted in the US Army on February 3, 1942 at Fort Snelling, MN, at the tender young age of nineteen. Elgin was a great marksman (and he’d say an excellent ghter) so he rose fast through the ranks because of this skill. He attained rank of Sergeant and served as a Squad Leader with the 19th Infantry Division, participating in campaigns in New Guinea, Southern Philippines and the Battle of Luzon. He received citations for extraordinary courage in battle time, he was wounded on February 15, 1945 in the Asiatic-Pacic Theater, and his decorations include a Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Bronze Arrowhead with two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart. Elgin is one of the oldest living WWII veterans, and the oldest veteran of the Kul Wicasa Oyate, Lower Brule Sioux Tribe. He recently celebrated his 98th birthday. He is a little hard of hearing today but is still known for his good humor and for sharing stories. His fondest memories are from his childhood, living in beautiful Ft.Hale, SD,spending time with his family and friends and enjoying ranch life. Elgin is in good health and currently resides in Pierre,SD.Veteran HonoringKella’s Lakota name is Wiyaka Wašté Win “Good Feather Woman.” She was named after my great, great grandmother.
