JOSHUA JENSEN NAGLE
ENDLESS SUMMER ARTIST EDITION
Canadian photographer Joshua Jensen Nagle captures scenes of leisure from a distance often from high above transforming people on beaches into toy like igures against sublime natural backdrops His ongoing series Endless Summer shows people as colorful specks clustered on long stretches of sand with green or blue bands of water edging the scene like abstract elements His immersive cinematic large scale photos invite viewers to lose themselves in the crowd and the striking landscape sparking associations that might resemble the artist s own memories of a childhood spent on the shore memories of never ending days loating in the water jumping waves In the tradition of photographers like Thomas Struth and Andreas Gursky Jensen Nagle s images reveal arresting visual patterns in the everyday world and create dramatic shifts in perspective that show humans completely enveloped by their environment Viewing photography as a means to evoke emotion rather than document a reality he has spent a decade traveling the globe in search of beachscapes dotted with bathers to turn into compelling images often hanging out of helicopters to capture his birds eye views Based in Toronto Jensen Nagle has mounted over ifty exhibitions in the last dozen years across North America and Europe including at the Grifin Museum in Boston and the Glenbow Museum in Calgary He has placed his photographs in numerous private and corporate collections including Microsoft MasterCard International Cirque De Soliel Transcontinental Target and Hilton Hotels and has seen his work featured in a variety of publications including Art In America Canadian Art Fashion and Harper s

Artist Statement Endless Summer is an ongoing body of work which conveys the nostalgic thoughts and feelings of my childhood spent along the New Jersey shore The series of beaches is inspired by memories of never ending days loating in the water jumping waves suring with my dad and basking in the sun It was a simpler time and one of the only times in my life that I can remember feeling nothing more than pure happiness For over 12 years I have been photographing beachscapes and have spent recent years hanging out of helicopters across 4 continents and 8 countries getting a bird s eye view of sun lovers around the world and exploring aerial imagery as a new vantage point At irst glance works may read as abstract but upon closer look viewers peruse umbrellas sunbathers swimmers and surfers scattered about the scene creating a colourful composition My lens not only captures the blissful moments of those in the photograph but also allows the viewer to relect on their own memories and attempts to evoke similar emotions of delight and joy Joshua Jensen Nagle
