Monmouth Oregon From Pioneer Roots to Proud College Town Monmouth is a small town that never forgets what it means to be a small town Community pride and hometown values are top priorities Like many small communities Monmouth s history is a central part of its identity today It remains true to its pioneer roots free from large city problems When pioneers first settled the land they were unaware they were building what would become a chief center of agriculture commerce and transportation Today Monmouth s founders would surely be proud of what their town has become and what it has preserved Careful well planned development has allowed the community the luxury to grow and flourish while maintaining its natural scenery 6 and beauty The downtown area features a diverse business community housed in historic buildings some of which are on the National Register of Historic Buildings Home to Western Oregon University the oldest public college on the west coast Monmouth was settled in 1853 by immigrants from Monmouth Illinois The year 1856 saw the construction of the original Monmouth University along with the settlement s first store and frame house Three years later the City of Monmouth was incorporated although the city didn t elect leaders until 1880 Over the following decades many buildings were erected including a post office hotel livery stable still present today opera house and numerous homes A series of unfortunate fires decimated many of the city s original woodframe structures in the late 1800s but a number remain Overlooking east Main Street the historic Craven House is the oldest private home in Monmouth The last example of Gothic Revival residential architecture in town Craven House is one of the structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places Western Oregon University s Campbell Hall earns the distinction of second oldest original building in town Completed in 1871 the stately structure has served the college continually since The class of 1887 planted a sequoia near

Independence Oregon Historic Hops Capital of the World Independence Oregon was founded on the spirit of pioneer independence and pragmatism It was born when immigrants from Independence Missouri struck westward in the mid 1800s hoping to find prosperity in Oregon The city was originally two separate sites named for the men who founded them Elvin Thorp s Town of Independence established in 1845 and Henry Hill s Town of Independence founded two years later The two settlements were merged by city charter bill in 1885 Today the portion known originally as Thorp s Town of Independence is commonly called Old Town Independence grew steadily the climate and soil were ideal for growing crops By 1890 Inde8 pendence boasted electric street lights with a public water works completed a year later In 1892 the telephone and telegram office opened but the town s first six streets weren t paved until 1912 five years after a resident purchased the area s first automobile Independence s downtown area is home to many historic buildings dating from 1880 to 1890 Encompassing nearly 30 square blocks the Independence Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 due to the historic beauty of much of the town s architecture The railroads serving Monmouth also served Independence firmly establishing the region as a shipping point both by rail and river Agricultural and timber products continued to be transported via rail and river well into the 1950s Anchored by its picturesque historic district Independence offers numerous restaurants and merchants along with public parks and community activities Known as the historic hops capital of the world Independence celebrates its hops growing history with the annual Independence Hop Heritage Festival The festival grew out of gatherings in the hop fields held at the end of the harvest celebrating the yield of the season Each year on a weekend in September the community holds a parade events and contests complete with food drink entertainment and fireworks to commemorate the harvest Since 1902 Independence Days
