hours from skilled community members. Rochester Area Builders sourced building materials through donations, and they also asked the community to directly support the students. Each student received a donated toolkit that was theirs to keep.Students were actively involved in the design process, and the lessons of their mentors inuenced their design ideas. After learning about the importance of accessibility, the students decided to add a “drawbridge” ramp to their castle design. The students completed an entire engineering design cycle and have the physical evidence to prove it. The Kellogg Middle School administrators took pride in sharing progress photos with students and families. Students’ learning was supported at all levels: peers, teachers, families, professionals, and members of the public. The playhouse designers were invited to showcase their work at popular summer events: Rochesterfest, the Rochesterfest Parade, and Thursdays Downtown. The project resonated with the public and stirred conversations about the value of returning trade skills to the curriculum. The most profound impact was on the students. The project felt real. Students held power tools and high-ved mentors. The knowledge and condence they gained will last a long time, perhaps even into their career choices. Rochester Area Builders appreciated that 50% of the participating students were girls. They viewed the Playground to Playhouse program as a way to promote diversity in their male-dominated eld.At the end of the project’s life cycle, the playhouse found a good home. As part of the “Once Upon A Playhouse” fundraiser, the students’ creation was donated, rafed, and won by a local family. Students’ efforts created something nancially valuable that will support health services for families and the elderly. We anticipate that Kellogg Middle School’s second annual playhouse will break ground in Spring 2024. Playground to PlayhouseLed by Rochester Area BuildersIn the fall of 2022, the president of Rochester Area Builders approached Rochester Community Education with an idea for a new class. Their proposal came to life in the best way possible. With the help of numerous mentors, fourteen students from Kellogg Middle School designed and constructed a full scale playhouse. The playhouse was displayed at public events throughout the summer and was ultimately rafed to raise money for Family Service Rochester, a community-based organization that provides mental health services and senior independence services. The Playground to Playhouse project was made possible by Rochester Community Education, Kellogg Middle School, Rochester Area Builders, Family Service Rochester, Downtown Rochester Alliance, four sponsors, and a professional network of tradespeople. At each stage of the project, all of these adults gathered around the students and ensured their success. All stakeholders prioritized a learning experience that was genuine, mentor-led, and on public display.Rochester Area Builders used their professional network to nd a representative from nearly every trade involved in building a house. The result was more than 100 volunteer Rochester Area Builders is a professional association for tradespeople in Southeastern Minnesota.17* = Partnership class (See pg. 20 for more information)
