Hello Members.Welcome to the Winter edition of YOURS.As the days draw in and winter starts to bite, visiting any of DOOLEYS Club sites will brighten your day. Please refer to this edition of YOURS for all the winter specials that are on oer.May I remind Members that COVID-19 restrictions are still in force when visiting DOOLEYS. Members and guests need to be double vaccinated, and wearing of masks is encouraged whilst walking around our venues. COVID-19 is not going away anytime soon, and indications are that complacency is an issue which could prevent a return to normality for us all. I urge Members to conform to NSW Health advice and practice good hygiene whilst visiting any of our club sites.FROM THE BOARDROOMAt the February 2022 Board Meeting, long term Director Terry Kenny resigned from the Board of DOOLEYS aer 23 years of loyal service. Terry joined the club in 1964 and immediately became involved in many social innovations which helped hold the club together in the middle sixties when so many other opposition clubs came into being. Terry was Treasurer of the Golf Club for many years and was awarded with Life Membership in 1986 for his services to DOOLEYS. Terry is still a passionate Member, and Chair of the Sports Council and will be missed by the Board for his wise counsel and support of the Board’s decision to expand the Club’s footprint over the years. I wish Terry and his wife Beth the very best and look forward to catching up with them around the club.At the March 2022 Board Meeting Member Joseph Giovenco was appointed to the casual vacancy le by the resignation of Director Terry Kenny. Joseph brings to the Board many years of business experience as Chief Executive Oicer of a Telecommunications and Technology Company, and now consultant advising industry on transformation, future of broadcast, challenges and opportunities, and holds Board positions within the industry. Joe has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Macquarie University and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD). We welcome Joseph to the Board and look forward to his contribution to the Club going forward.As reported previously, the development of our Lidcombe site is moving forward with ADCO Constructions moving into the main club building, and the temporarily closing down of a section of the ground floor dining areas and Board Street basement car park. This will allow construction work to commence and deliver a wonderful club consisting of new bars, restaurants, café, and members lounge among other great facilities. Completion date for Stage 1 is early 2024.The decision by the Board to explore the possibility of a new club is moving forward, with constructive negotiations with consultants continuing, and hopefully in the coming months a positive announcement can be made of the development of the project.CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Our commitment to our local community and beyond continues with three grants awarded to The Cancer Centre for Children at the Children’s Hospital Westmead. The grants have been awarded to three of the most highly ranked applications.• Dr Kavi Gowrishankar awarded $50K for her proposal to KIDS Cancer Alliance - treatment of pediatric malignancies.• A/Prof Dan Catchpole awarded $20K for his proposal to Kids Cancer Project - Looking deep beneath the surface of the childhood rhabdomyosarcoma.• Mr. Sam Bax awarded $20K for his PhD and his scholarship application to KIDS Cancer Alliance - Developing 3D models of pediatric cancer.The above three recipients will delve deep into the structure of cancer with cutting edge technology and advanced computational image analyses to support their research.DOOLEYS is a proud supporter of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and have been supporting the Cancer Centre for Children since 2003.At the March Board Meeting the Board approved a total of $50k towards the Flood Disaster with $25k each to Flood Relief Australia for flood relief and cleanup and Good 360 Australia for food, clothing, and basic essentials.At the same time the Board approved $50K to Caritas Australia to help the Ukraine Crisis Appeal, to provide emergency humanitarian aid and assistance in helping refugees and displaced persons including medical aid, shelter, clothing and expert trauma care. ANZAC DAY 2022On Anzac Day I attended the Anzac Day Dawn Service in Remembrance Park Lidcombe to commemorate Australia’s involvement in all wars from the Boar War through to Afghanistan.The morning was warm with a slight drizzle as the service was conducted by the Lidcombe RSL Sub -Branch in front of a large crowd including club Members and Sta. The occasional address was given by the Principal of Lidcombe Public School Nicole Monk, and I laid a wreath on behalf of DOOLEYS Members. Aerwards, breakfast was served to all in attendance at the club in Lidcombe. Later in the day my wife Kaye and I attended the ANZAC Commemoration Service held at DOOLEYS Regents Park Sports Club. Regents Park Heartbeat Church Pastor, Trent Callus, conducted a moving service in front of a large crowd. The occasional address was given by Warrant Oicer Chris Perrin from the Royal Australian Navy, and I laid a wreath on behalf of DOOLEYS Members. Joseph’s strong organisational transformation, customer service and change management leadership resulted in market share growth and positive customer satisfaction. He also led the strategic planning and implementation of innovative solutions for major program delivery, new services, automation, and facility management in a technological disruptive marketplace. Joseph has Technical, Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Company Director qualifications with senior executive management experience. He is currently a consultant and subject matter expert, advising industry on transformation, future of broadcast, challenges, and opportunities. Previously a board member of the Australian Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). Anna has also completed the Governance Institute of Australia’s Certificate in Governance for Not-for-Profits. Anna was invited to the Board in March 2019 and was elected to the Board in October 2019. She is a member of the Audit and Risk Committee, the Nominations Committee and is the Patron of the DOOLEYS Ladies Shuleboard Club. She brings over 14 years’ experience in the banking and legal sectors, having worked as legal counsel for National Australia Bank and is currently a Senior Lawyer at a leading Australian law firm. She is a member of the NSW Law Society and the Australian Restructuring Insolvency and Turnaround Association. Anna was previously a Board Committee Member of the Women’s Insolvency Network Australia (NSW Branch). Anna is committed to social welfare and the community.In recent years, Anna volunteered as a patient liaison volunteer at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse at RPA Hospital. She also regularly volunteers at the DOOLEYS Christmas Fair. Outside of her professional commitments, Anna is a keen tennis player, playing for many years with the Berala-Carramar Tennis Association. She enjoys playing golf with the DOOLEYS Social Golf Club and has previously been nominated for DOOLEYS Sportsperson of the Year. TONY KHOURY B. BUS., FCPA, FGIA, FAICDTony has been involved in the waste and recycling industry since 1990 and is currently the Executive Director of the Waste Contractors & Recyclers Association of NSW. In this role, he deals with all of the stakeholder groups that aect the waste and recycling industry and he reports to an Executive Board that is elected from across the membership. The full extent of his responsibilities can be found at www.wcra.com.au Tony is a Fellow Certified Practising Accountant, a Fellow Member of the Institute of Corporate Governance, a Fellow Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a Registered Tax Agent, holds a Bachelor of Business Degree, a Diploma in Corporate Management and has a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment TAE40110.In 2013 Tony, was appointed by the Board to fill a casual vacancy as a Director of DOOLEYS Lidcombe Catholic Club. In June 2020, Tony was again approached by the Board to fill another casual vacancy and his appointment was approved by the Members at the 2020 AGM, where he was re-elected. Tony is a member of the DOOLEYS Remuneration Committee and the patron of the DOOLEYS Ladies Indoor Bowls. Tony served a six-year term to 30 June 2021 as a Director of the Catholic Cemeteries Board, where he also held the position of Chair of the Audit, Governance and Risk Management Committee. Tony grew up in Lidcombe where he attended high school at Benedict College in Auburn (now Trinity Catholic College) and has many friends and family members living in the Cumberland City Council area. So that members might consider their positions regarding nominations for Board positions, profiles are being provided of the three retiring directors who will be eligible for re-election. The Board is not in the position to endorse any candidate or potential candidate.
Hello Members.Welcome to the Winter edition of YOURS. Over recent months it has been pleasing to see steady growth across DOOLEYS Clubs as we successfully navigate our return to pre COVID-19 operation levels. Member confidence continues to grow, and our Sta have maintained our high service standards to ensure your time with DOOLEYS continues to be memorable. Communities beyond DOOLEYS have not experienced such encouraging times with the recent floods and Ukraine crisis having devastating aects here in Australia and overseas. In response, DOOLEYS donated $50,000 to assist the flood relief eorts in NSW with $25,000 donated to Good360 Australia and Disaster Relief Australia. The devastating humanitarian conflict in Ukraine also saw DOOLEYS Board of Directors unanimously agree to donate a further $50,000 to Ukraine Crisis Appeal. For further information regarding these donations please refer to the community news on P. 30. TRANSFORMATION WORKS – LIDCOMBE Exciting transformations are taking place at DOOLEYS Lidcombe with the delivery of a new Club expansion and refurbishment underway. Members will witness a major transformation over the next three years, which will provide class leading facilities for DOOLEYS Members and the local community.Over coming weeks, appointed builder, ADCO Construction, will set up a construction compound on the vacant land between Board & Ann Street, and conduct a range of infrastructure decommissioning and the demolition of retail properties along John St. In July 2022, Members will see a noticeable impact within the Lidcombe Club as Lloyd’s Bistro, Three Lanterns Bar, and the Children’s play area on the ground floor close and the building of world class food & beverage oerings commence. We will continue to have an expansive range of food and beverage options including Baileys Sports Bar, John Street Café and the Members Lounge on the ground floor, The Upper Quarter on level one together with 8 Dragons and Vincent’s Noodle House. We thank Members for their patience during the construction period and reassure Members any disruptions will be kept to a minimum. COVID-19 - MAINTENANCE The disturbance of COVID-19 on DOOLEYS is gradually diminishing as the removal of close contact isolation rules li sta resourcing pressures. Maintaining our safety standards remains in place and DOOLEYS Sta have continued to remain vigilant to ensure the health and wellbeing of our Members and Sta remain a priority. This includes the wearing of face masks for customer facing Sta and for Members when moving throughout our venues. DOOLEYS also continues to maintain entry to fully vaccinated or medically exempt persons only. Maintaining our safety and hygiene standards is critical and in the best interests of everyone visiting our venues and we thank you for continued support and understanding of our COVID-19 safe initiatives.BOARD ELECTIONS – NOMINATIONS Nominations for aspiring Directors to join DOOLEYS Board will open from Monday 29 August and close Monday 12 September 2022 at 5:00pm. A Directors information evening has been scheduled on 8 August 2022 at our Lidcombe site with registrations essential and accepted until 1 August 2022. Should an Election be called, voting will be conducted online by the Australian Election Company from 23 September and close on 17 October 2022 at 8:00pm. For further information regarding upcoming Board Elections please refer to P. 6. DOOLEYS WATERVIEW – SALE As agreed by Members at the Extraordinary General Meeting in April 2021, the sale of the DOOLEYS Waterview site, Bar and Grill Waterview, continues with the Club scheduled to close its doors at the end of this year aer 19 years of operation. The sale of the Waterview site forms part of the Clubs strategic plan to explore new and exciting opportunities. The vision is to expand into Olympic Park the range and quality of Member facilities in an area of significant investment and growth over the coming years. Many DOOLEYS Sta and Members alike have come to call Waterview their venue of choice for two decades and appropriate celebrations to close this chapter will be revealed later in the year. Please also note that all our Waterview sta will be retained within the existing business.CLUBS AND COMMUNITY AWARDS – FINALISTS Recently DOOLEYS were recognised as finalists in the 2022 Clubs and Community Awards. Hosted annually by ClubsNSW, the Awards recognise and celebrate the above and beyond social contributions made by Clubs in their local communities. DOOLEYS are proud finalists in four categories in partnerships with the following remarkable organisations:• Mercy Connect Refugee Mentoring Program (Education): proudly investing almost $200,000 over the past nine years to support educational opportunities for young refugee and asylum seeker students. • Blues Wheelchair Basketball Club (Fostering Grassroots Sports): providing $66,000 over the last five years to support the development and pathways for local female sporting talent with disability. • Child Abuse Prevention Service (Mental and Social Wellbeing): Contributing $50,000 over the last three years towards critical resources to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and harm minimisation for women. • The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (Health): As a Foundation Partner, DOOLEYS has contributed over $2.2 million since 2003. DOOLEYS has the privilege of making an impact on the most highly respected paediatric centre in the state which services 50,000 sick kids annually. It is our mission to continue to support the ongoing innovative treatments, better diagnostics, and preventative measures for young children and their families through the Clubs ongoing support of clinical trials and critical research grants. CLUB CHAPLAIN’SMESSAGEDear Friends,Winter is a unique time of the year. Many influential philosophers in history utilized their winter months to contemplate and develop their ideas which continue to influence us today. In very distinguished circles, when it was unsafe to be out and about in the blizzard, winter months were spent with music, good food and poetry. For us in Lidcombe and Auburn, the recent incidents at another local gym on Tuesday 10th May is a stark reminder of another kind of blizzard that is beginning to enter our way of life. It is a blizzard that seeks to shatter the security and peace of our Australian way of life. At the recent ANZAC Dawn Service in Lidcombe, I was reminded again that we have to work together to protect and uphold the fruits of the sacrifices of so many service women and men, so that we can live peacefully and in prosperity. Whether you will spend this winter knitting for children in shelters, or visiting friends, or catching up with mates at DOOLEYS, may these times spent with family and friends be occasions where we show love and respect for one another. Faced with such acts that threaten the peace and security of our way of life, it is only through love that we will keep the fire of peace ablaze in our hearts, in our community and in our homes. DEVELOPMENT UPDATEJ uly will be an exciting month for DOOLEYS as the renovation and expansion of the Lidcombe property finally gets underway. Sunday the 26th of June will be the final trading day for Lloyds Bistro, the Three Lanterns bar and the children’s play area, as these areas close to allow for the demolition of the Club's shops on John St and the Three Lanterns bar.Members will see a range of activity, starting with the set up of a construction compound on the vacant land between Board & Ann St, the removal of the overhead power lines along Board St and a new power supply connected from John St.Internally, a new acoustic construction hoarding will be erected to secure the Bistro area, which will be stripped ready for refurbishment. The remainder of the Club will remain open as usual during the initial demolition phase and The Upper Quarter which was recently completed on Level 1 will be fully operational too. This destination includes dining and cafe options, a new kids play area and a parent room. We aim to keep disruption to a minimum and inevitably there will be some noticeable impacts, but we are confident that it will be worthwhile when we deliver a top class hospitality venue that members can be truly proud of. The demolition phase will draw to a close in September, facilitating the start of the main works in October when excavation work on the new basement car park will begin.
