Being a youth worker requires a great deal of perseverance, especially when it comes to discipleship. I’m not telling you something you don’t already know. Dened, perseverance is “persistence in doing something despite difculty or delay in achieving success.” I’m reminded of stories like Jack Caneld, creator of Chicken Soup for the Soul, who pitched his original idea to 130 different publishers, and none were interested. Eventually a small publisher in Florida picked them up and they have sold over 500 million copies. We’ve all heard the story of Thomas Edison, who as a child was considered unteachable. Or what about Walt Disney, who was red from his newspaper job because he was told he lacked creativity. When I think of perseverance, working to help students grow into mature followers of Jesus is full of difculty. Creating a culture of discipleship is a long, intentional process, and never ends. Discipling students comes with ups and downs. There are days where we experience failure, perhaps even rejection. You know what I’m talking about - those days where nothing you seem to try is working. I’m reminded of Paul’s teachings in Philippians 3:13-14 and the encouragement it offers:‘Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.’ Writing from prison Paul describes in Philippians the joys of following Christ and persevering for the gospel. I believe this is a major part of this incredible calling God has placed on your life as a youth worker to disciple students. There is an amazing determination you have, even in the toughest of times as you strive for the spiritual progress of your students.
