NCS 2023 Thanksgiving Evening & Year in Review10It has been a wonderful year as I have come to know the sta, students and parents of Nowra Christian School. What has impressed me most has been the professionalism of the sta, the character of the students and the friendliness of the parents. It takes time to get to know everybody (in excess of one thousand people) but I thank you for your patience and graciousness. Nowra Christian School has struck me as being a very diverse community. We have students and families from all over the world. We have members of our school who have deep roots in the school and in the Shoalhaven Community as well as people who are new to the area and encountered our school for the first time in 2023.This booklet highlights important activities and experiences that our students have been involved in. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has been involved in the life of the school and recognise their contributions and dedication throughout the year.Theme 2023 - Good NewsIn 2023 our school will worked through the New Testament book of Luke with the theme ‘Good News’. Over the year we have learnt the certainty of the truths taught from God’s word the Bible. These are that God sent His son Jesus to earth to live, work and teach amongst the nation of Israel in the first century. We’ve seen that God’s Old Testament promises are fulfilled in Jesus, who showed through his teachings, healings and miracles his divine power and authority; and by dying on the cross for our sins is able to bring people into God’s family. The book of Luke concludes with the account of Jesus rising from the dead and being seen by many witnesses. This confirms Jesus as Son of God and ruler over God’s kingdom, defeating his enemies. As we studied this book over the year we discovered that this is indeed good news!‘Know for certain the truth you have been taught.’ Luke 1:4 and ‘I bring you good news of great joy for all the people’ Luke 2:10Teaching and learning2023 saw NCS embark upon the journey of adopting explicit teaching as a whole-school pedagogy. To this end we have begun professional development for our teachers during our sta meetings and during professional development days. Explicit Teaching is an evidence-based practice which has a significant positive impact on student learning. It focuses on the clear teaching of content and skills to students, the engagement of students, instantaneous feedback and the recollection of prior learning. In 2024, Mrs Longfield in the Primary School and Mrs Douglas in the Secondary School will take on the roles of Instructional Coaches for our Sta with the purpose of embedding the practice of Explicit Teaching across the whole School. As the Secondary School grows in size, so too as a school we need to grow in our management. To this end, the following appointments have been made as Heads of Faculty.• Creative Arts & Languages - Mr West• English - Mrs Thompson• HSIE - Mrs RebelPrincipal’s Review of 2023

Page 11

NCS 2023 Thanksgiving Evening & Year in Review11Principal’s Review of 2023• Mathematics - Mr Clarke• PDHPE & Biblical Studies - Miss Bignell• Science - Mrs Edwards• TAS - Mr LawrenceStrategic PlanThroughout 2023, the school board has been working towards a new strategic plan that will identify areas for school improvement through to the end of 2027. This has now been completed and is ready to be published. The plan focuses on five strategic pillars that have always been important to the school and will continue to be developed by the school over the next four years. They include: Faith and Mission, Teaching and Learning, Wellbeing and Culture, Community and finally Stewardship. Post-School destinationsIt is always exciting to see our graduate students’ plans for the future. These range from studying at University in diverse fields such as nursing, commerce, music, creative writing, creative arts, engineering, paramedicine and many more. Other students are looking to the Australian Defence Force, gaining apprenticeships, working with animals, becoming firefighters, working in beauty and again, the list goes on. What is exciting is the diversity of employment options our students are exploring, utilising their gifts and talents. Dux of 2022Congratulations to Alec Dobson from our 2022 Year 12 cohort who received the highest ATAR score in our school last year.Beyond the classroomEective teaching and learning takes place in a wide variety of contexts and settings, including well beyond the formal classroom. This year has seen our students being productively engaged in many rich learning experiences in diverse areas such as cultural, sporting, Christian growth, leadership, volunteering, careers and work experience, community and service pursuits. It is wonderful to observe how such opportunities enrich the learning experiences of our students and frequently challenge and extend their horizons. It is simply not possible to mention all of the many examples of these learning programs here but I have included a representative sample for your interest and information:Madagascar - This year it was Primary’s turn to produce a musical. Every student in Stage 3 was involved, from designing logos, creating props and costumes, selling snacks and ushering through to performing and stage crew. What an incredible eort! Audiences of all ages loved the energy and fun that projected from the cast on stage. They performed two matinees and two evening shows with a cast and crew of over 50 students! It was a blessing to have another opportunity for the students to work together, using their talents and energy to serve the community with a terrific show.Nowra Show - In February, the Shoalhaven community gathered to attend The Nowra Show, which celebrated the talent of our region in all things agricultural as well as arts, crafts and cooking. NCS students submitted artworks, graphic design, craft, floral displays, scones

Page 12

NCS 2023 Thanksgiving Evening & Year in Review12and slices, lego and woodwork. NCS was exceptionally well represented in the winners’ circle in the pavilion display at the Nowra Show. Congratulations to all students/sta who entered and received a prize. Special mention to those who achieved a first place: Ashanti Button, Hayley Edwards, Alana Hall-Speight, Emelie Tucciarone, Ashleigh Smith, Cameron Stewart, Will Stewart, Millie White and Madeline Wilson. As a result of this outstanding eort in show entries, our school was also delighted to receive the President’s Award for 2nd Place, Secondary School. Mrs Stewart was presented with a certificate in recognition of excellent participation and results.Relay for Life - In March, students from Years 5 and 6 as well as a few from Year 4, took up the challenge to join the ‘NCS Prime Movers’ Relay for Life team for 2023 event. This year’s event was known as ‘The Last Lap’, as it was the final Relay for Life event in the Shoalhaven. This made it especially important to participate one more time. The team’s original target amount was $3,000, but with the generosity of those donating, we quickly surpassed this and by the end of the event we raised $7,047. What an incredible eort by our students, parents and sta.Book Week - What a spectacular community event this ended up being! It was an exciting week of author visits, a readers’ theatre performance, scavenger hunts, escape challenges, writing a book in a day and, to top it all o, the Book Week Character Parade. It was wonderful to have so many of our NCS families and friends come along to celebrate with the students and to see the creativity and imagination and the wide variety of costumes on show. However, even more importantly, it was a privilege to be able to share in the joy and enthusiasm of the students and sta to promote a love of books and reading within our school and at home.Write a Book in a Day - Over one hundred students across Primary and Secondary school participated in this worthwhile fundraiser for Kids Cancer Project. Teams worked together to write and illustrate a whole book in a day - six hours for Primary and twelve for Secondary. It is a mammoth eort to collaborate over a single story and produce a book in this time frame. The fourteen teams raised $3000 for the charityEisteddfod - Nowra Christian School continues to support the local Eisteddfod by entering a number of dierent categories. This year both Primary Choir and Secondary Vocal Ensemble entered the singing section. We had groups from Stage 2, Stage 4 and Stage 5 in the schools drama section, trios and duos in the instrumental section and Primary classes entered in the verse speaking. We had reason to be very proud of all these groups. Some were successful in attaining places, with a number of first and second places. But all were successful in giving their best performance.Excursions - These are an important part of school

Page 13

NCS 2023 Thanksgiving Evening & Year in Review13life. There were many that happened throughout the year, from Kindergarten through to Seniors. Some of these included: Kindergarten went to the Entertainment Centre to watch Possum magic. Stage 1 dressed up for the Kangaroo Valley Pioneer museum. Stage 2 visited The Wollongong Science Space, Year 5 had their Canberra Camp while Year 6 went to Camp Wedderburn, Year 7 visited The Shoalhaven Zoo and Treetops Adventure , Year 8 went to Attunga for their camp while Year 9 and 10 went to Stanwell tops for their camp. Seniors retreated to Gerringong for a study camp. This year also saw the return of the Secondary snow trip.Student Leadership - It has been encouraging to see many of our students involved in Christian leadership opportunities such as Leaders in Training (LIT), Followers in Training (FIT) as well as leading lunchtime Bible study groups. Students were also given leadership training and opportunities through two new initiatives, the Student Ambassador Program and Christian Leadership Program. Please continue to pray for our student leaders, that we will have enthusiastic new leaders raised up to serve in 2024.Other activities - ANZAC Day and NAIDOC Assemblies, National Sorry Day, Creative Arts Showcase, NCS Concert Band, Music Tuition, ‘Speak to Me’ Public Speaking Contest, the Da Vinci Challenge, ROXXEM Francomanie Tournament, Chess Competitions, Tour de Worrigee, Year 8 Medieval Workshop, Pi Day - and the list goes on. Other happeningsNCS School Board - As always, all members of the NCS Board have been faithfully serving our school behind the scenes. They demonstrate great commitment to this important governance role, ensuring the solid Christian foundations of our school are appropriately supported through the development and consolidation of policies and procedures. Recently appointed, Nowra Baptist Church Senior Pastor, Ian Deane has been a welcomed addition to our School Board. Defence Transition Mentor - Mrs Adrienne Varga has continued to serve faithfully in this role. She has been a wonderful asset to our school and in particular our Defence families, which now make up more than 14% of our school population.Sta Conference Weeks - We have enjoyed two

Page 14

NCS 2023 Thanksgiving Evening & Year in Review14productive and spiritually refreshing conference weeks, one at the start of the year and one mid-year. These weeks provided a wonderful opportunity for sta, both teaching and non-teaching, to engage in a range of valuable professional development activities and personal preparation time. Making NCS known - We have had several opportunities to promote our school to prospective families. These have included an Open Week with many families coming through our school for tours, a ‘Taste N See’ Year 7 Experience Day and four Kindergarten Open Mornings. We have been encouraged by the increasing interest shown in our school from prospective families.NCS CommunityNCS Twilight Picnic - We had to postpone this event a few times due to unpredictable weather, but on a beautiful evening in March we finally had our NCS Twilight Picnic. We enjoyed some old-fashioned picnic games, soccer and sports on the oval. Many picnic rugs and chairs were spread out on the grass and we enjoyed the delicious gourmet BBQ, barista coee, drinks and gelato for dessert. It was a wonderful opportunity to chat with current and new families within our NCS Community.Community Prayer Breakfast - It was wonderful to have almost 45 sta, parents/carers and students come and uphold our school and community in prayer at our two Community Prayer Breakfasts. We hope to hold more of these breakfasts in 2024.Community Coee & Chat - Aimed at building a sense of community has been well received by parents. Over the course of the year we were able to hold five coee and chat mornings. These mornings enable parents/carers to meet in an informal setting with sta but also to have the opportunity to meet with other families and to strengthen relationships within our community. Sporting AchievementsNCS students have again been involved in many sporting events and experiences from AFL Gala and skills days to cricket, soccer, swimming, gymnastics, athletics, volleyball, netball, basketball, rugby, touch football, cross counrty, hockey, dragon tag and triathlon.SwimmingSwimming Age Champions - PrimaryJnr Boys - Jimmy Thomas/Koby Cardow Jnr Girls - Penny Jones Snr Boys - Noah Snr Girls - Shakaya Nye2023 School BoardChairman: Mr Paul DickinsonTreasurer: Mr Simon HustwitPrincipal: Mr Graeme JolliePastor: Ps Ian DeaneMr Gary CurlineMrs Fiona LewisMrs Bessie WeisselMrs Jenny SchaeferMr Johnno Tallon

As the year draws to a close there is only one permanent sta member who is departing, Mrs Kathy Bignell, our much-loved librarian who is retiring. We are very thankful for all her dedicated work throughout the many years of service. I would also like to acknowledge Mrs Joanne Beattie and Mrs Jenny Thomas who taught English during Terms 1 & 2 and who provided an excellent level of education for their students. We are fortunate that Mrs Thomas will be taking Mr Lawrence’s role teaching TAS as he is on long-service leave for the first term of 2024. Additionally, Heather Luke, resigned earlier in the year from her diligent work in accounts to focus on her study and Fleur Creighton in the canteen, who has had a long association with the school, has moved to work at TAFE. I would also like to mention Mrs Maree Sommerville who worked with us for Term 3 in the Primary School as some sta took long service leave and brought considerable expertise to that role.Leaving (or who departed during the year)• Joanne Beattie - Secondary Teacher• Fleur Creighton - Canteen Manager• Kathy Bignell - Librarian• Heather Luke - Accounts• Mike Akinsanya - ICT AssistantNew in 2023• Graeme Jollie - Principal• Owen Cowley - Secondary Teacher• Dean De Rooy - Secondary Teacher• Ava Fahey - Secondary Teacher’s Aide• James Flippence - Secondary Teacher’s Aide• Rebekah Gordon - Primary Teacher• Meagan Graham - Primary Teacher’s Aide• Carli Green - Primary Teacher• Michele Green - Accounts• Charlotte Halliday - Secondary Teacher• Cameron Lee - Secondary Teacher• Joshua Resus - Canteen Manager• Tama Wiringi - ICT Assistant

The Trainee Teachers is an initiative whereby NCS is partnering with AlphaCrucis College and the St Philips Teaching School to provide a Traineeship to people entering the Teaching Profession. Through these traineeships, NCS is investing in future teachers as we support them with regular training in Christian Education and practical experience in the classroom. AnchorsWe have reclassified our values of Care, Community and Character as anchors. The idea of an anchor is something that holds us in position, firm and true. NCS will always be a school which shows care to people as they are made in the image of God and therefore are worthy of dignity and respect. Because God is a God of relationships we will always hold in the highest regard the relationships in which we exist and so will seek to have a strong community at NCS. And so as a community we will always seek to be growing in character as we look to Jesus as God made man, whose attitudes we should emulate.

Page 21

ValuesJesus displayed many characteristics that are desirable to adopt. This year we have determined six character traits that we value in particular and desire that our community be known by adhering to these character traits. They are humility, integrity, kindness, perseverance, respect and gratitude. We will flesh these out more in 2024 as we seek to foster, teach and embody these values in our school. Christmas GreetingsAs we draw the school year to a close, I would like to direct our attention to the Christmas period where we remember the birth of Jesus our Saviour, the author and perfecter of our faith, who humbled himself by being born as a human, wth the express purpose of going to the cross to redeem all who call on His name.
