Yeshiva Derech HaTorah
In 1979, a group of Brooklyn parents met to discuss the need for a new type of
yeshiva. Not satisfied with the existing schools, they were seeking an Orthodox
boys’ yeshiva completely devoted to Torah, and firmly committed to the State of
Israel. Philosophical guidelines were drawn up to provide an education in Ahavat
Torah, Ahavat Am Yisrael and Ahavat Eretz Yisrael. Limudei Kodesh was to be
taught on a very high level and an excellent General Studies education was to be
offered.
In September 1980, the yeshiva opened its doors as a preschool in the Beth Abra-
ham Synagogue on Bragg Street. To accommodate the many requests for
admission, the school moved the next year to larger quarters in the Young Israel of
Bedford Bay on Brown Street, expanding to elementary grades. The yeshiva
quickly outgrew those quarters, and relocated to its present home in the Kingsway
Jewish Center. Here the school continued to grow with classes from nursery to
eighth grade. In 1995 the school’s name was changed from Yeshivat Mizrachi
L’Banim to Yeshiva Derech HaTorah. The name change did not represent a depar-
ture from the philosophy or ideology of the founding parents in 1979.
The year 2005 saw the writing of a new chapter in the history of the school with the
eagerly awaited announcement of Yeshiva Derech HaTorah High School. In Sep-
tember 2006 Yeshiva Derech HaTorah High School started with the first freshman
class.
Our school’s superb educational programs are led by Rabbi Elimelech Chanales,
Head of School; Mr. Yehuda Goldstein, Elementary School General Studies Princi-
pal; Mrs. Malka Schmulowitz, Pre-School Director; and our High School Principal,
Rabbi Ari Neuwirth. The school’s administration is headed by Joel Weisblum,
Executive Director. Together they lead an outstanding staff and are responsible for
the high level of excellence to which everyone is committed.
hanks to the support given by the Officers and Board of Directors and the Wom-
en’s Organization, we have successfully maintained our growth as an outstanding
yeshiva, making a significant contribution to Orthodox Judaism in Brooklyn.

Message from the Chairman of the Board
Dr. Jan Geliebter
On behalf of the Board of Directors of YDH, it is my pleasure to greet and
welcome parents, staff, rabbeim, teachers, administrators, guests, friends and
honorees to Yeshiva Derech HaTorah’s Fortieth Annual Dinner. I would also like to
thank the Dinner/Journal Committee for their countless hours of work in preparation
for this beautiful event.
This year we are privileged to recognize the efforts of our Parents of the
Year, Mr. and Mrs. Menachem & Malka Husarsky and Rabbi Avrohom Schwartz,
Mechanech of the Year for their continued contributions to YDH and its students.
We are fortunate to have them as part of the YDH family. We are also blessed to
welcome back The Graduating Class of 1990. We are so proud of your
accomplishments and are touched that you still associate with Yeshivat Mizrachi
L’Banim/YDH. It is through the efforts of our honorees that Yeshiva Derech HaTorah
has become a unique boy’s yeshiva which emphasizes Limudei Kodesh, secular
studies, and the Modern State of Israel. Our curriculum integrates these values to
produce graduates who are expected to go on to college and careers in the
modern world with a foundation deeply rooted in these three pillars. The hard
work of the staff, rabbeim, teachers and administration is supplemented by the
dedication of our parent body and supporters.
We have accomplished much, but our goal is to do much more. We ask
all parents to follow the lead of our honorees and to give of their time and
resources to help YDH and our boys. Together we can continue to provide the
education and environment that our boys deserve and need to be competitive
as adults in the “outside” world.
It is also the hard work and commitment of the Women’s Organization that
makes much of what goes on in YDH possible. With little recognition, thanks or
appreciation the WO works continuously to provide activities and financial support
for our children. We are blessed to have Women of Valor who dedicate their
efforts to all of our children and make YDH a first rate school. On behalf of the
Board of Directors let me thank the WO for all they do for us and may we continue
to enjoy success and happiness in all our endeavors.
May we all continue to grow and prosper together in good health for many
years to come

Message from the President
Mr. Jake Abilevitz
It is with great pride that I take this opportunity to welcome you to our
40th Annual Dinner.
The Yeshiva Derech HaTorah Elementary and High Schools continue the
tradition of providing our boys with the finest Limudei Kodesh and Limudei
Chol education. We do this while maintaining a strong emphasis on Ahavat
Am Yisrael and Medinat Yisrael. The Yeshiva has been expanding with the
consistent growth of our Pre-School under the guidance of Mrs. Malka Schmu-
lowitz, our Pre-School Director. Yeshiva Derech HaTorah is successfully led by
our Head of School, Rabbi Elimelech Chanales, our Elementary School (1-8)
General Studies Principal, Mr. Yehuda Goldstein, and our High School
Principal, Rabbi Ari Neuwirth, and Mashgiach Ruchani, Rabbi Yisroel
Grossberg.
I would like to thank our Executive Director, Mr. Joel Weisblum, for all of
his hard work and dedication on behalf of our Yeshiva.
I extend a hearty Yeiashar Koachechen to our Dinner Chairperson, Tara
Ebbin and our Journal Chairperson, Sara Greenfield, and their committees
who have labored long and hard to make this evening a huge success. I
thank the members of the Dinner and Journal committees once again for a
job well done.
At this year’s 40th Annual Dinner our honorees are:
Mr. Menachem and Mrs. Malka Husarsky - Parents of the Year
Rabbi Avrohom Schwartz - Mechanech of the Year
The 1990 Graduating Class of Yeshivat Mizrachi L’Banim - 30th Class Reunion
Thank you for your selfless dedication and devotion to our Yeshiva.
To everyone who has joined us at this Simcha, thank you for your
patronage. I look forward to your continued support and dedication in the
coming years, iy”H.

Message from the Executive Director
Mr. Joel Weisblum
We are once again gathered to celebrate our Yeshiva and the
many strides we have made during this past year. We have the
privilege this year to pay tribute to our Yeshiva Parents of the Year, Mr.
and Mrs. Menachem Husarsky and our Mechanech of the Year, Rabbi
Avrohom Schwartz. Each in their own, quiet way contribute enormously
to our Makom Kadosh. This year we have the added pleasure of
recognizing the Yeshivat Mizrachi L’Banim graduating class of 1990,
celebrating their thirtieth graduation anniversary.
A dinner is an opportunity to recognize, if only for an evening, a
few of those that have contributed their time, energy and resources to
make our Yeshiva the extraordinary center of learning that it has
become. It would be nearly impossible to thank, or even to list, all of
those that contribute their talents on a daily basis to create a
superlative learning environment for our children. From our Hanhallah
to those that keep our facilities clean, and everyone in between, our
Yeshiva could not function without their tireless efforts.
I would, however, be remiss not to thank the vast number of
people who worked so hard to make this evening a memorable and
enjoyable one, but thanking people by name is a very dangerous
undertaking. Invariably someone is forgotten. There are a few,
however, who cannot go unmentioned. Mr. Jake Abilevitz guided us
along the way with his expertise and experience. Dr. Jan Geliebter’s
extraordinary ability to focus kept us on track, and kept each meeting
moving at a pace that allowed me to say good night to my wife. Our
fearless leader and Chairperson of the Dinner Committee, Mrs. Tara
Ebbin, once again proved that a leader possessing the unique ability
to bring people together can accomplish great things with their team.
A special thank you goes to Mrs. Sara Greenfield, who with a
calm demeanor and blaring music once again flawlessly filled the
position of Journal Chairperson. She has created our fortieth dinner
journal from scratch, and she makes it seem as if she has been doing
it forever. I look forward to working with all of you on next year’s dinner.

Message from the Head of School
Rabbi Elimelech Chanales
It gives me great pride and pleasure to join with our extended Yeshiva Derech
HaTorah family in celebrating our great Yeshiva. We share Nachat from the smiles on the
faces of the children as they sing in the choir and we share stories of our successes as we
listen to the school leadership speak from the podium. Mazal Tov on another great year.
I would like to share a thought from the S’forno that encapsulates the feeling in the
room this evening and the ruach that permeates the Yeshiva daily. In explanation of the
third of the הלואגה תונושל - And I will redeem you” יתלאגו, he explains that “this will occur
with the drowning of the Egyptians in the sea because after the death of your masters you
will no longer be slaves.” Curiously, after all the miracles and show of love to His nation the
B’nei Yisrael should have naturally considered themselves free men. Why should they have
needed the extra measure of seeing the corpses of their masters washed ashore to remove
their slave mentality?
We see from here that it is not easy to change our feelings and impressions of
ourselves. Perhaps we may have felt like freed slaves but not like free men until the vivid
picture of the demise of their deceased masters. One of the most common causes of
spiritual failure is the lack of appreciation of who we really are and our enormous potential.
If we were to realize our actual lofty and noble nature more carefully, we could become
great people and accomplish great things.
Our Yeshiva works very hard to find the potential in each individual student and
faculty member by nurturing their great spirit and noble Neshama to help it grow beyond
expectations. We are only able to accomplish this when everyone participates and takes a
strong interest in seeing the yeshiva flourish.
I think both of our honorees exemplify these qualities. Rabbi Schwartz, who in the
evening lectures college students in this area, spends much of his time attempting to figure
out the manner with which each child learns best. Each student has his own unique
learning style and needs to be reached accordingly. At the root of this powerful skill is the
care he feels for each and every student.
The Husarskys are simply the Yeshiva’s best friends. The dedication to each of their
children is evident by how close they are and the amount of love and attention they invest
in Eli, Meira and Lilah. They are refined and happy people and it is a pleasure and privilege
to know them and their family. Mrs. Husarsky regularly helps the Yeshiva whenever she can
with grace and commitment and without fanfare; a sign of a true Eishet Chayil.
It is with great admiration that I share this evening with all of you and I am grateful to
have the privilege of having a part in educating your children.

Message from the General Studies Principal
Mr. Yehuda Goldstein
Tonight, we celebrate Yeshiva Derech HaTorah’s 40th Annual Dinner. That means
we have achieved two full generations of producing talented young men who become
B’nei Torah, businessmen, professionals, and usually, a combination of these...For two
generations we have contributed to the future makers and shakers of the Jewish
community.
From truly humble origins, beginning in a trailer in the parking lot of the Young
Israel of Bedford Bay in the 1980’s, YDH has become an established and respected
Torah Institution, serving the community from Nursery through 12th grade. Yeshiva Derech
HaTorah has earned a name for itself as a unique Torah institution, instilling in its talmidim
a pride for who they are, an intense love for Torah and Yahadut, and a passion for our
Jewish State. As such, YDH provides an excellent educational program that prepares our
boys to be good citizens who can navigate the secular world and do so with
competence and confidence. All this has been achieved in a warm, nurturing
environment populated by dedicated and driven professionals and laymen. Starting at
the top, our president - the original “energizer” who “keeps on going...and going…” Mr.
Jake Abilevitz; our Chairman of the Board, Dr. Jan Geliebter - whose keen mind and
sheer instinct have been a guiding light - and the Board of Directors who, even in the
toughest times, leave no stone unturned and cut no corners in order to make sure that
the education at YDH is the best it can be.
YDH is also home to a phenomenally talented and devoted faculty, one
comprised of professionals who seek to make YDH a second home for their students.
Speaking of students, YDH boasts a student body that radiates kindness and the fine
Midot instilled by their incredible parents.

Message from the High School Principal
Rabbi Ari Neuwirth
With great pride and tremendous satisfaction, I write this letter
celebrating our 40
th
Annual Dinner. I am proud to be associated with such
an illustrious yeshiva consisting of dedicated lay leaders, parents, staff and
students. We have had an incredible and productive year. We are
looking forward, with Hashem’s help, to continue building on the progress
that has been made so far.
Tonight, it is appropriate that we are acknowledging individuals who
are deserving of recognition. All are receiving a well-deserved honor for
their commitment to Yeshiva Derech HaTorah and the wider Jewish
community.
Tonight we are recognizing a very special Rebbi and colleague.
Rabbi Schwartz’s deep dedication and concern for his talmidim and
fellow rebbeim is greatly apparent, as you connect and guide all of your
talmidim in your class. Your toil, sweat and tears for this yeshiva, is
absolutely evident. Mazal Tov upon receiving the Mechanech of the Year
Award!
In addition, I would like to wish Mr. and Mrs. Husarsky congratulations
upon receiving the Parents of the Year award. Your dedication and
commitment to the yeshiva knows no bounds.

Message from the Pre-School Director
Mrs. Malka Schmulowitz
It is with much gratude to בקהה that I was fortunate to join the
Yeshiva Derech HaTorah family. In the short me that Ive been here, I have
goen to see an enormous showing of uncondional love, dedicaon, and
devoon to the many member of the הבישיה תלהנה. The support of the
Yeshiva Derech Hatorah parents as great partners in the ךוניח of their children
connues to be a tremendous source of inspiraon to me. The smiles on the
childrensfaces, always excited about the new facets and opportunies of
every day, are a source of great encouragement to me as well. The posive
vibes felt around the yeshiva infuse everyone with posive energy that
inltrates every Yeshiva Derech HaTorah member, every subject area, every
nook and every cranny. It boosts self-condence and fosters trusng
relaonships. It imbues our enre sta, parents and student body with a
feeling of warmth, camaraderie, unity and belonging.
Mazel Tov to Rabbi Schwartz, a Rebbe who personies the warmth,
dedicaon, and devoon of Yeshiva Derech HaTorahs faculty and to Mr. and
Mrs. Husarsky, parents who acvely inculcate the warmth, dedicaon, and
devoon to their children.
May we be zoche to connue to provide, as a mul-faceted team of
caregivers, a strong basis upon which our students will connue to build as
they mature and grow into respecul, responsible, wholesome adults.

Message from the Dinner Chairperson
Mrs. Tara Ebbin
To answer some burning questions:
Yes I know my boys graduated a few years ago
Yes I know that not many people read the journal
So why am I back again to chair the YDH dinner? And why do I take the time to
thank those that have made the job significantly easier than it should be? For one reason,
and one reason only. Hakarat hatov through derech eretz. So maybe that’s 2 reasons, but
they are so firmly intertwined that it is hard to see where one ends and the other begins.
The education in derech eretz, limudei kodesh, and limudei chol taught within
these four walls and beyond were the basis of my boys’ education. As a parent who wants
to teach her children by example, there is no better partner than Yeshiva Derech Hatorah.
So taking part in this fundraising dinner is my way of saying thank you, repeatedly, and
publicly while dong a bit of chesed at the same time. I know and understand that many
people are not in a position to donate mass sums of money to a school, regardless of how
much they may want to, but there are many other ways to contribute to the success,
growth and progress of our school. Despite its extraordinarily talented Administration,
Educators, lay leadership, and support staff, they cannot do it alone. So I would encourage
everyone attending this dinner, reading this journal, or making a donation to find some
way, no matter how big or small to participate. Get involved, show your appreciation, show
your support, and most importantly, show your kids. As they grow, you will see your efforts
pay off. I can honestly say that I do (almost) every day.
Our honorees this year share my passion for YDH, and would not hesitate to say so.
But more importantly, they demonstrate it with their actions.
Our Parents of the Year, Malka and Menachem Husarsky could also be called
“volunteers of the year”, because what they do for the Yeshiva and many other causes that
are important to them, goes way beyond the call of duty of a parent. They are the
examples that their parents, children, and community can all be proud of and strive to
emulate.
I have thought about what makes Rabbi Schwartz such a successful rebbi. I believe
the answer again goes back to derech eretz. His approach to educating his students
revolves around understanding their needs as individuals, pushing the boundaries of what
they believe they can do, and creating the foundation for a lifetime of learning. Not only
teaching the boys the material, but teaching them to learn in whatever way they will find
success is his hallmark. For that, he is honored with the Mechanech of the Year award.
The 2020 Alumni of the Year Award goes to the graduating class of 1990
spearheaded by Rabbi Nachi Klein. What better way to show hakarat hatov to the Yeshiva
than to not only live the values imparted during those formative years, but to come back
and choose to have an 8
th
grade reunion at the yeshiva’s Annual Dinner to demonstrate
the impact that YDH (then YMLB) had on their educational and social growth. I was truly
amazed by the heartfelt words that I heard from this class when talking about their
teachers, friends, and experiences during grade school. We are proud of the graduating
class of 1990, appreciative of the shem tov that they give the school, and are honored to
have them as the 2020 Alumni of the Year.

Message from the Dinner Chairperson
Mrs. Tara Ebbin
Cont.
I want to thank, sincerely all those who donated their time, energy, creativity
and zeal to make this dinner seem so seamless. They say that half the battle is just
showing up. But I can assure you, it takes far more to make things happen. Some
have spent endless hours proofreading journal ads (even when they come in at
the last minute), others have made countless calls to sell raffle tickets, secure ads
and tabulate head-counts. Yet others have filled in the gaps on all the things that I
forgot to assign, helped select thoughtful gifts for our honorees, printed beautiful
materials at the last minute, created fantastic video presentations, stuffed
envelopes, or simply were there for me publicly or privately saying thank you and
reminding me what a wonderful family YDH truly is.
To all those whose public and private contributions to the school have
provided the opportunity for an outstanding education right in our backyard. Thank
you. May Hashem grant you the strength to continue your efforts for many years to
come.
Special thanks to Jake, Jan, Joel, Sara and Ann. Despite the fact that I
suspect you already know, I want you to know that I recognize that this dinner
would not happen without you. I recognize that you all have “day jobs” and I
appreciate your willingness to work with me year after year in my efforts to show my
appreciation to YDH. Thank you to your families for lending you to me for an
unbelievable number of hours, at sometimes unreasonable times of the day.
Last, but certainly not least, to my family who fill in on supper duties, pick me
up from meetings, help me create and craft centerpieces, forgive me absences,
and are generally willing collaborators in my efforts. I know there are a million other
things that you would rather do, but I am proud that you choose to be a part of this
endeavor once again.

Gruss Life Monument Funds
Yeshiva Derech HaTorah wishes to thank the Joseph and Caroline
Gruss Life Monument Funds, its Board of Directors, President Jason
Curry and Joel Beritz, Vice President, who have been most instrumental
in supporting our school.
Joseph Gruss was born on March 19, 1903 in Lvov, Poland, the
youngest of seven children of a major Polish banking family. His father,
Isaac, was a
Talmudic
scholar as well as a banker, and his mother’s
family was in the export grain business.
In 1934, Joseph married Caroline Zelaznik, daughter of a Czechoslo-
vakian army officer; she herself was an attorney who clerked for a Polish
judge. The young family prospered and in 1939, Joseph Gruss estab-
lished a travel bureau in New York so that he could regularly leave Poland.
In New York, Mr. Gruss founded an investment trading company.
Investments in natural gas and petroleum, exploration were also
successful. He and Caroline had two children, Evelyn Gruss Upper, M.D.
and Martin D. Gruss, and six grandchildren.
In 1938, Mr. Gruss became aware of the particular problems in
Jewish education insufficient salaries for teachers and unsafe, unsani-
tary conditions in the schools, among others. Thus began one philanthro-
pist’s unique vision. From that time on, Caroline and Joseph Gruss
became the foremost benefactors of Jewish education in the world.
During their lifetimes, they supported hundreds of Jewish schools and
thousands of students and educators. In Israel, schools and child-care
centers and medical units bear the Gruss name as well. The Gruss Life
Monument funds was established in 1990 to perpetuate the philan-
thropic endeavors of Caroline and Joseph Gruss.

A parent from another yeshiva attending a Kingsway Sunday program,
spoke to one of our students, who was leaving after class on Sunday.
She commented to him that it must be tough
having to come to school on a Sunday.
The student responded with complete sincerity,
“Not at all. I love learning Torah and I love my Rebbe!”
They - Our Rebbeim - love Torah
and transmit that love to their Talmidim
along with their lessons.
YDH is blessed with
the warmth, wisdom, and knowledge
of its Rebbeim and Morot!
We are fortunate for each and every one of you!

They don’t vote on the Board of Directors,

Menachem and Malka Husarsky
Parents of the Year
The 2020 Yeshiva Derech Hatorah Parents of the Year honor is awarded to Menachem and
Malka Husarsky. It seems that Malka and Menachem Husarsky have been involved at YDH from the
moment their son Elie, now 13, walked through the doors for the first time. Their engagement in the
yeshiva has extended beyond the education of their son, as Malka has been President of the Yeshiva
Derech Hatorah Women’s Organization for four years, member of the dinner committee, and Board
Member of Yeshiva Derech Hatorah. Rarely an event takes place at the school that Malka hasn’t
attended, coordinated, documented on social media or otherwise supported. Her smile and helping
hand have been instrumental is so many ways. However, this involvement does not come as a
surprise to anyone who has interacted with this dynamic couple. The Husarskys devote an
extraordinary amount of time to their community, whether it is the YDH school community, their local
neighborhood community in Ditmas Park, or their summer community at Vacation Village in upstate
Loch Sheldrake, New York. Malka is a board member of the Chabad of Ditmas Park Mikvah
Committee and Emunah of America as well as a founding member of DiPSI (Ditmas Park Singles
Initiative). Likewise, when asked to describe Yeshiva Derech Hatorah, their vocabulary immediately
turns to that of family and community describing the warmth of the faculty in all their interactions with
the children in limudei kodesh, limudei chol, as well as the life lessons necessary to nurture and guide
students through their formative educational years. Teaching by example, through a variety of
methods to ensure that no student gets left behind demonstrates the relationship and respect that is
built by the teachers, rebbeim, and staff during the students time here. They enjoy seeing the school
in action as they support students and families alike in the educational process, sharing in simchas
and offering guidance through any challenges that may arise.
Before becoming parents to Elie, age 13, Meira, age 9, and Lilah, age 4, Menachem
received a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science while Malka attended Brooklyn College. When this
3D printing engineer and social media coordinator are not working with one of the many
organizations where they donate their time, they stay physically fit in karate (Menachem is a 2
nd
de-
gree black belt) and tending to their chicken farm yes right here in Brooklyn! Menachem also
enjoys staying intellectually fit devoting time to learning daf yomi.
When asked what this award means to them, they responded, “A huge part of YDH is Hakarat
Hatov. Being grateful is the basis of Emunah and Bitachon. Knowing that Hashem gives you what you
need and puts certain people in your path truly illustrates Hashem’s plan for each of our lives. We are
beyond grateful to Hashem for introducing our YDH family into our lives. Our journey has been
enhanced and our family’s growth has been effected so much by each and every member of the
Derech HaTorah team.”
Malka and Menachem are a true example of dedication for not only their children, but also
all those who are lucky enough to cross their paths. The Yeshiva Derech Hatorah family wishes Malka
and Menachem Husarsky, as well as their family and friends a mazal tov on this well-deserved honor.

Rabbi Avrohom Schwartz
Mecchanech
of the Year
The 2020 Yeshiva Derech Hatorah Mechanech of the Year honor is awarded
to Rabbi Avrohom Schwartz. Rabbi Schwartz is no stranger to either the classroom or
the field of education. A veteran mechanech, Rabbi Schwartz received smicha
from the Yeshiva of South Fallsburg a Master’s Degree in Special Education from
Touro College. He has had a variety of teaching experiences to both young and old
students alike. He also has experience, throughout his career, teaching in both the
special educational and mainstream environments. Rabbi Schwartz has been a
Rebbe for the past 26 years and for the past 11 years, he has been inspiring the 6
th
grade boys of Yeshiva Derech HaTorah in limudei kodesh. He is the mechanech
that guides the boys through their first full year learning gemara, creating the
foundation upon which they can build their future. He strives to connect with each
of the boys using all the tools in his toolbox from flashy multimedia presentations on
the smart board, to the simplest smile of encouragement that gives a boy the
inspiration to keep trying.
However, when Rabbi Schwartz leaves the YDH building, he serves as the
secular studies principal in Yeshiva Ch’san Sofer. Additionally, Rabbi Schwartz is
grooming the next generation of educators as he serves as an adjunct professor of
Education in two colleges and conducts teacher training workshops for various
agencies. He has consulted for PEARLS, aiding principals in upgrading and
implementing curriculum. Furthermore, Rabbi Schwartz has created two workbooks,
Shas Words and Torah Terms, currently offered by Torah U’Mesorah Publications.
Many boys have passed through Rabbi Schwartz’s classroom who have benefitted
from the strong vocabulary skills built through his “Shas Words”. He was also a worthy
recipient of the Gruss Award for Excellence in teaching and the Grinspoon/
Steinhardt award for excellence in Jewish Education. One of the first to embrace the
technology of the smart board in his classroom, Rabbi Schwartz keeps the boys
engaged by changing up his delivery, understanding each boys needs and
strengths and helping them understand how much he truly cares for each of them
as they continue on their path to becoming true ben Torah.
Rabbi Schwartz lives in Flatbush with his wife and unmarried children. He is
the father of 8 wonderful children ranging from ages 10 to 25, of whom 3 are
married and living in Lakewood, NJ. He and his eishet chayil Rochy are also the
proud grandparents of 4 wonderful grandchildren. He serves as gabbai in his shul,
Khal Bnei Torah/Kollel Dirshu of Flatbush and spends his summers in Camp Romimu
as the assistant learning director bringing his love of teaching throughout the full
year cycle. He loves “learning the daf” each day to nourish his soul and cooking up
a storm on his BBQ grill to nourish the body of everyone who partakes.
Rabbi Schwartz speaks of the family feel that greets him when he enters the
doors of Yeshiva Derech HaTorah each morning. We are proud to wish Rabbi
Schwartz, his friends, family, and extended YDH family a yasher koach on this well-
deserved honor.

The Yeshivat Mizrachi L’Banim
Graduation Class of 1990
The 2020 Alumni of the Year Award is presented to the Yeshivat Mizrachi
L’Banim’s 8th Grade Graduating Class of 1990. It is fitting for this award to be
bestowed upon the class as a whole because this group truly functioned as a
single entity. Their sense of unity, caring for one another, and appreciation of the
Yeshiva that gave them their start is truly amazing. It gives the us great nachat to be
able to see that these boys have become successful in their chosen fields of
employment that they embody not only what they learned in the classroom, but
also what they learned in the playground about forming life-long relationships.
As this dinner moved through the planning phases, many stories were
relayed about the caring atmosphere, the laughter, and the learning that took
place during those formative years; and the impact that it had on their life's path.
Many of these young men have not been back to the yeshiva in many years, while
others have returned as parents of Yeshiva Derech Hatorah, giving us the honor of
educating their next generation.
It can be said that it is unusual for an 8th grade class to remain close - so
much so that they decided that a reunion was in order. Travelling from near and
far, these former students shared their photos and their memories. These are the
traditional hallmarks of a reunion. However, what makes this reunion special is the
fact that they decided to not only share it with each other, but also to share it with
the Yeshiva itself. The expression of hakarat hatov is not only meaningful, but a
demonstration of the middot that were imparted many years ago. It is often said
that Yeshivat Mizrachi L’baim/Yeshiva Derech Hatorah is like a warm, welcoming
family. We are honored to welcome the 1990 graduating class home again and
wish them many more years of friendship, nachat, and success.

The day will always stick in my mind. The year was 2009. Our oldest child was ready for
the big time Yeshiva. It was scary and exciting all at once. Thinking about the interview
filled me with anxiety and stress. This would bezrat Hashem be the place we trusted out
child to for the next 10 years of his life. Would he be appreciated, cherished, loved and un-
derstood? Would he just be a number, getting lost in the crowd? All these fears were allayed
when I walked into YDH for the first of thousands of times.

The Torah is not a history book.
The Torah is a gift from Hashem,
it's a handbook and a guidebook for life,
filled with lessons and wisdom.
At YDH the Torah comes alive every day.
Lessons are lived and then learned.
This approach to learning comes from every corner of the school.
Rabbi Chanales, Mr. Goldstein, Mr. Weisblum, Rabbi Neuwirth,
Mr. Abilevitz lead from the top,
they make sure to stay grounded,
making sure there are still folk following in their footsteps.
The
Rebbeim
put their hearts into their
talmidim
,
and the kids know it.
The teachers give freedom and flexibility to each child
according to their individual needs.
The secretaries are often surrogate mothers,
sewing up ripped pants, friendly reminders to do this and that,
and taking pictures of memorable moments.
Our support staff, like Julio, Karbel, Jean, Yehuda etc
make the yeshiva safe, clean, and colorful,
but most importantly happy.
Each member of the YDH family makes the whole greater
than the sum of its parts,
and reminds us all how Torah is living
and breathing in each of us.
