It seems as if there is very little ability or desire to dialogue with others over sensitive issues. I recently learned of a long-term friendship that ended over what seemed to be a simple disagreement. We are urged to, “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us” (1 Peter 2:12). As believers we have the opportunity to do good deeds which will impact unbelievers and bring glory to God. The New Living Translation brings this to life: “Be careful how you live among your unbelieving neighbors. Even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will believe and give honor to God when he comes to judge the world” (1 Peter 2:12 NLT). The Message paraphrase says, “Friends, live an exemplary life in your neighborhood so that your actions will refute their prejudices. Then they’ll be won over to God’s side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives” (1 Peter 2:12 MSG).Throughout Scripture we are told to do good. “Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture” (Psalm 37:3).And as we do good deeds, we will bring glory to God. “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). As we work with children and teens in Bible Adventure, CIA, camps & retreats, and the 4.12 Leadership Training Program, we want to equip them to live lives that demonstrate goodness and glorify God. This is not about working our way to heaven, scoring points with God or impressing other people, but living a life that glorifies God is more effective in sharing Him with others! And O how refreshing this can be in a world where people are craving goodness!I invite you to read on and see how this is happening through Joy El’s programs.Aaron E. Shepherds LodgeDare to ShareBy Gary McCauley,Development Coordinator1 Peter 2:12 says, “…having yourconduct honorable among theGentiles, that when they speakagainst you as evildoers, theymay, by your good works whichthey observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.”The Greek word for “honorable” is rich in meaning. Itimplies the purest, highest, noblest kind of goodness. ThusChristians must outwardly live among non-Christians in thebest ways they can.At Joy El we work very hard to instill this principle in every child or adult that comes to us during the year. That is so thatwhen they leave their experience at Joy El, that is how they will treat the people they are around who do not share theirChristian faith. So, we ask you to remember the Bible Adventure and CIAprograms in your giving to Joy El. Attendance at BibleAdventure and CIA is without fee to the children, but itcosts approximately $147 per year per child. Will you pleaseprayerfully consider a gift?In every way, the Bible Adventure program is designed tohelp your child or someone else’s to control themselves inall kinds of situations and demonstrate their “good deeds”before everyone they come in contact with. The rest of the verse teaches us that there will be anaccounting of our actions toward others and that Christiansare held to a higher standard as to how we treat others. Weare always to show Christ in everything we say or do.Your givingmakes adifferencein sharingJesus with ourhurting world.*Please usethe enclosedenvelope tohelp childrenattend BA/CIA.We are overjoyed thatthe Joy El board hasunanimously voted tomove ahead and buildthe Shepherds Lodge. We are praying for aJune 2023 dedicationso this building canbe used for next summer. God has provided significantly for“Igniting HOPE in generations that seek Him.” Please joinus in praying that God will provide $399,590 to fund thecampaign so we can complete construction. In this home stretch, it’s time for each of us to decide and acton our parts. Whether that be prayer support, or a financialgift, we are so grateful to see the people of God rallyingaround this vision He’s given for Joy El. Visit joyelcamps.org/donate/igniting-hope/ to learn more.“It’s not the goal of Joy El to build buildings for the sake ofbuilding, but to build lives, and to do that we need buildings.Would God have you to help us accomplish that task?” -Rev.Jerry Traister, former director“It’s exciting to me to see the growth that is happening atJoy El right now. Those who are serving... often have to carry their bunks across the campus... there’s no other placeon the campgrounds for them to [sleep] because there are somany campers. I’ve seen firsthand this growth. These whomwe call shepherds - [they’re] why it’s important we have theShepherds Lodge.” Gregg Garman, former director, honorarycampaign chair. We have at least one staff member who is a regular collector of Godstories. In other words, when she recognizes God at work, she jots downa couple notes with the intention of telling or writing the story later. Sheknows these stories are worth sharing! Oftentimes, anecdotes like this endup on the Joy El blog.Don’t miss out on the excitement of hearing about what God is doing atand through Joy El! Sharing Lived OutYour Story Makes a DifferenceElijah Shively Assistant Program Director One of the greatest opportunities for summer staff members is to be able to share their testimony with campers. Oftentimes, they will go in front during the chapel service to share something that God has been teaching them or how God showed them the way to work through a struggle in His strength. I had been talking with a counselor, whom I’ll call Chris, about sharing his testimony for a few weeks, but he was nervous to do it, because it made him feel vulnerable in front of his peers. He also wasn’t sure whether it would actually help any campers. I encouraged him that the Lord can work in many ways; we just have to be willing to act. One night during chapel, Chris went up front and shared how he had gone from home to home as a child and about his struggles with issues like addiction and anxiety. He shared about how he had tried many ways to put these things behind him, but that until he found Christ none of these things had worked. However, since he found Christ, his life has been transformed. Knowing Jesus, he found help through his faith and through community with other Christians. During the next day’s staff meeting, multiple counselors shared that during their small group time after chapel many other campers not only related with Chris’s story, but they were able to share their own stories for the first time. Through Chris’s vulnerability in sharing his story in front of these kids, many campers finally found the strength to be able to share vulnerably with others and get help also. Chris’s good deed glorified God and strengthened many young people.Rachel Shively, 4.12 Leadership Training Program Director When Ann* joined the 4.12 Leadership Training Program, she came from a home where she was often ridiculed for her faith. However, this opposition never stopped her from finding many opportunities to serve and to share Jesus with those she loves. Despite her lack of family support, Ann has quickly become involved at Joy El and has discovered a deep passion to serve others. Although many in her life don’t understand her desire to serve, their confusion provides her an opportunity to explain her motivation. She continues to share her faith at home and prays daily for her loved ones to come to know Jesus. As the depth of her faith has grown, she has found many ways to serve others in addition to her family. Ann initiates conversations with friends at school who don’t have relationships with Jesus. She also served as a junior counselor last summer, and the Lord led her to a camper with a very similar home life as her own. This resulted in a deep and encouraging conversation during which Ann was able to speak truth and perseverance into the camper’s life. After summer, Ann started serving consistently with a local children’s ministry, alongside her Barnabas mentor, teaching the Bible and sharing the hope of Jesus with children year-round. Please pray for Ann as the Lord speaks through her to many who desperately need the hope of Jesus! *not her real nameJust like Ann, your story may be just what someone needs to hear.A counselor was transparent about his story. Campers related and were able to share their own stories.

“Soul Goals” surpassed on Bible Adventure opening days! Stewardship BanquetsSusie Barkdoll, Assistant Director of Bible AdventureWe are praising God for how He is working in Bible Adventure and Christians In Action! Over 400 volunteers attended our trainings and kickoff rallies at summer’s end, where they were challenged to put their faith into action and, in doing so, to glorify God. As we step out in “Fearless Faith” (this year’s theme), we have 96 programs opening and will be adding three new ones. God has also brought four new equipping coordinators to our team to fill positions in the York area. While volunteers have set “soul goals” (the term we use for the number of students a Bible Adventure or CIA would like to see enrolled in their individual programs by December), they are being amazed by how God has already blown those goals out of the water! Some of the Bible Adventure and CIA programs have not only begun this year with the number of students they finished with last year, but some have far exceeded their annual soul goals already--on opening day!Our 2022-23 theme verse is 1 Corinthians 16:13: “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.” We are trusting that the enthusiasm we’ve seen this year among the students and volunteers will continue to grow and that the children will realize how God is greater than any circumstance they may encounter. Our desire is to see both students and volunteers walking in fearless faith. Just imagine the many ways God will be glorified! We are arriving at the stewardship banquet season here at Joy El and I am excited to see what God will do! When the first table sponsorship arrived in my email, a fire was lit in me and our theme verse for the banquets came alive. “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness” (2 Peter 1:3). Wow, His divine power takes care of us! When you attend a stewardship banquet or sponsor a table, it is helping us to be able to share that divine power with children who may never encounter it unless they are touched by a Joy El program. There will be four opportunities for you to be part of sharing his divine power and experiencing the difference it makes by hearing from some individuals who have been on the receiving end of your generosity. To attend one of these banquets, please RSVP to Amy at 717-369-4539 or amy@joyel.org.Lancaster at Shady Maple on Nov 3 at 6:30 PMJoy El on Nov 8 at 6:30 PMYork at St David’s on Nov 10 at 6:30 PMJoy El on Nov 17 at 11:30 AMThe power of one loving adult in the life of a child is massive.
