REC I PE turkey gobbler biscuits COOK TIME 10 15 MIN TEMP 375 SERVINGS 8 INGREDIENTS 1 17 3oz can buttermilk 16 currants dried biscuits refrigerated 2 3 tsp milk 4 raisins quartered 8 sunflower seeds 16 pieces pimiento or red bell pepper cut into 1 8 x 1 2 inch pieces shelled DIRECTIONS Separate dough into 8 biscuits Cut 1 2 inch piece off of each biscuit and set aside to use for body To form feathers cut each larger piece of dough at about 1 4 inch intervals from rounded edge to within 1 2 inch of straight edge Place feather portions of dough 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet Place each body piece of dough cut side down on center of each feather portion allowing 1 4 inch of body to drop below the straight edge Press lower half of each body piece firmly allowing top half of each piece to remain puffy forming head Brush dough with milk For eyes press 2 currants into each head For the beak press sunflower seed below the eyes arrange pimiento piece just below the beak to form the wattle Bake at 375 for 10 15 min or until golden brown Immediately remove from cookie sheet Serve warm 21

A FEW STEPS THROUGH THE LIFE OF Ruth Elaine Bryant Ekleberry 1935 Born April 19 1935 to Lyman and Edith Wildt Bryant in an old farmhouse on Blackman Road in Jackson Michigan 1936 Moved to Brooklyn Mom and Dad bought the farm in Brooklyn Michigan when I was a year old They bought 98 acres a barn and a house for 9 000 That was a lot of money back then A loaf of bread was 5 cents 1951 Met Jack 1953 Summer job at Ford 1954 Graduated High School 1954 Hired in at the Ypsilanti Ford Plant I met Jack Ekleberry at Clark Lake We went together 6 years before we got married He was in the Army for two of those years he was a Lieutenant Colonel I worked three months at Ford in Brooklyn Michigan for a summer job before going back to finish high school Graduated from Brooklyn High School with Elaine Audrey One morning I got up and I said to Mom and Dad I think I m going to go down and sign up to get me a job Dad said You won t be driving 5 miles you re going to be driving 45 miles I said Yeah I know Dad but there s a lot of carpools I ll get in a carpool Mom says I ll ride down with ya I said Okay So We went down there and Con Jones the superintendent saw me standing in line so he pulled me out of line I went in and took my test and he
said Can you go to work right now I said Yeah I think so I was too bashful to tell him that my mom was sitting out in the car That was back when you really had to know someone to get a job So after six hours I went out to the car and said Guess what Mom I got hired in She wasn t a bit upset she just said I kinda thought so Later everyone laughed Didn t she have to pee 1957 Married Jack 1979 Moved to Ann Arbor 1986 Moved to Ypsilanti 2004 Retirement We got married on October 5 1957 at the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church Mom and Dad gave us an acre of land for a wedding gift and Ralph got one too We started building our house and we didn t have to pay any rent We went room by room for 10 years to build the house as we could pay for it They never told us but they would tell the neighbors that they were both so happy that we built on the property They probably were happy to have their kids right next to them I moved to an apartment in Ann Arbor Michigan after my divorce from Jack He wanted me to stay in the house but I wanted to be closer to work I bought the condo in Ypsilanti Michigan residing there for 36 years at the time this cookbook was created I hired in and retired on the same day 50 years apart August 2 1954 August 2 2004 I was the utility relief person I worked as a factory rat for a long time and a couple of them said Why don t you go downstairs and take that class and learn those different jobs I said Oh I can t do that they said You can to So I went down and learned how to do seven different jobs I got 10 cents more an hour 205
they shared their recipes THIS IS WHO THEY ARE TO RUTH MICKEY SLIVINSKI Mickey was like a mom to me She never had any children I used to ride to work with her husband He was a hi lo driver he was a big guy and he had a heart attack out in the hayfield After that she moved back to Texas because she had a wealthy aunt who was involved in oil wells She wanted to adopt me I said Oh you don t want to do that Oh man if she would have adopted me I d probably got in on one of those oil wells Anyway she gave me the China she gave me a lot of stuff She took me to Hawaii she wanted to take Jack but he wouldn t go He wouldn t ever travel AUDREY BRYANT My brother Ralph s wife When we were young she would come down to the barn and I d be milking and I d squirt her legs I d say oh whoops I thought I was hitting the cat You think of the stupid things you did when you were a kid I don t know why she didn t like me ELAINE MCCABE Audrey s Sister All three of us graduated together I used to call her all the time and go down and see her in Maumee Ohio Ralph dated her and Audrey at the same time When Ralph asked me which one he should go with I lied and told him Audrey I m terrible I told Elaine about that years later and she said I m glad you did or I would have had to move to the Carolinas AUNT AGNES My mom s aunt She was always so fussy and neat She lived in Jackson and I couldn t wait when we d be delivering eggs we d stop and she always had some cookies or something there waiting for us She was the neatest old lady I d ever seen When she made her bed she always had a little tiny pin to make sure the sheet was right in the middle she was fussy But you walk in that house and man it was neat AUNT LEONA HABERCAMP Jack s aunt in Ohio She gave me a couple cookie recipes She was real nice HELEN CRUGER That s my dad s cousin Never got to see her too much because she lived pretty far away
JUDY BRYANT Judy was married to my cousin Lynwood We used to chum around a lot too I took them on a timeshare He was my dad s brother s boy RALPH BRYANT JR My brother s oldest boy He s a good kid He makes my mom s pineapple filled cookies still to this day When he was young he d get off the school bus and play pool with me before he would go home ANNETTE BRYANT BLACKBURN Annette is my brother s oldest daughter She takes care of my brother boy does she do a lot of work for him When Audrey died he didn t know what to do with himself Annette stepped in to help when his health started getting bad MIKE MILLER Oh he was gay His aunt would throw these large 500 dinners in Ann Arbor at the college and I would go with him and pretend to be his girlfriend I guess he got aids and he went blind I didn t know it until I went to see John the old man in the hospital and Mike was his roommate Last I heard he died I had some good times with him and he was a good cook HELEN MILLER She was Mike Miller s mom She was kinda bossy WANDA CROFT I met her at the hairdresser in Wayne Michigan We ve been friends ever since I ve been single We used to golf together She was part of the timeshare group it was Wanda Betsy Georgia Peach and Me All four of us took lots of trips together DOROTHY GRINBERG Georgia Peach I used to call her that because she was from Atlanta Georgia You would have loved her She was just so easy to get along with We used to golf and travel together I met Dot through Wanda They worked at J L Hudsons together She was always so organized JOSEPHINE ESCH We used to ride to work together she lived in Napoleon We d meet in Brooklyn and take turns driving to work Then we got in a carpool with three girls and three boys Us girls would sit in the backseat and we d take turns plucking each other s eyebrows going home That s why I don t have any anymore We did crazy things I tell ya 207
PEARL HALBERT I rode to work with her She used to make good lemon pies She was in the same group with Josephine and was the other one that would pluck eyebrows with us DEENA BICKHAM I worked with Deena We chummed around together for years and years She lives in Florida now I went out there with my timeshare to see her HONEY MAN AT WORK I don t know his name we always just called him Honey Man He used to raise bees and sell the honey at work I always liked him He d always give me a recipe book I ll never forget his story though about what he did for his daughter He told her that she was going to have to pay 25 a month for rent and she didn t think she could do it He said well it ll be a lot more on your own Anyways when she got married and moved out he gave her all of those rent checks back Never forgot that HARLEY ROBACK He s the one that rented my mom and dad s house when they died We rented it for 90 a month He had a little restaurant called Homes Restaurant out by Clark Lake before you get to US127 We d go down there and he d have his Jim Beam drinking all the time He made some good strawberry pie When I broke my leg Jack gave me instant oatmeal for breakfast and at lunchtime they brought down that strawberry pie for dinner PAT EKLEBERRY My ex sister in law She was married to Jack s brother Jim We shared a lot of recipes together AND A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU TO Aaron Annette Sheri Ralph Jr Thank you so much for gathering pictures to include in this project Ruth loves each and every one of you and is so thankful for all that you do for her 208
ruthie s collection THE CUPBOARD OF HIDDEN TREASURES THE COLLECTION As you can see from the pictures above Ruth had many cookbooks I thought it would be fun to include the complete collection to show just how narrowed down this selection we have in this book is I typed nearly two hundred before we ended up reducing it down to the final one hundred and sixty Which is still insane Not even pictured are two small green tins that hold 4x6 cards Both tins were full One of my favorite finds while going through her collection was the old Ford shop towel used to write down the coca cola cake reicpe I think the bacon bean bake was also on an old shop towel I also loved how Ruth had written on most of the covers She would write which recipes she liked and their page numbers It sure helped our search I picked a few of my favorites and decided to include them here Katie 216
Hello I m Ruthie s neighbor Katie and together we created this cookbook My boyfriend Matt moved into the condo next to hers in 2009 We started dating a decade later and I moved in about a year after that Slowly but surely we ve grown pretty close and now go to dinner every Thursday night She makes us cookies and baked goods far too often I love it but it s really making me put on some pounds After a little over a year of friendship with Ruth I kept looking at her cupboard of recipes wanting to go through them with her and one day we decided to I took pictures of a bunch and told her I was going to type them all out for her and make a book She got very excited Many many hours later and we have this cookbook It s somewhat of a Ruthie Legacy if you will I wanted it to be more about Ruth and her love for baking than just a collection of recipes I m so happy I have her recipes like the gumdrop cookies chocolate covered cherry cookies and meatloaf and potato casserole just to name a few It was really fun to watch her light up when I would ask about who people were or about times in her life She loved telling me the stories and seeing everything come to life Shortly before starting this adventure she had tattled on herself and told me that as she was shredding old tax documents she also shredded all of her pictures because no one will want to go through my shit when I die I was devastated for her nieces and nephews and for her though as well that she was having those feelings So I contacted her nieces and nephews and asked them to send me all of the pictures they had of her They sent quite the collection After a couple months of gathering I finally went through and edited all of the pictures I printed everything off and took them to her to see who everyone was She was so excited to see them all and by the fact that the kids had sent them to me This sparked a little search for her only baby picture in existence only for us to discover that she had not actually thrown away ALL of her pictures thank the Lord In the basement at the bottom of her built ins were a couple of photo albums with exactly what I was looking for some childhood pictures There weren t many until graduation but that s because in rural America cameras just weren t a big household item until the mid 1940 50s However everyone in possession of this book will now have these pictures and not have to worry about anyone shredding them ever again Goodness I hope you enjoy this half as much as I have It was truly an honor to learn from and spend so much time with such a wonderful woman Katie Inman ELEPRINT DESIGN
