7 There are many different kinds of carrier oils. Carrier oils ensure that essential oils applied topically are comfortable. Dilution with a carrier oil does not dilute the effect of the EOs, it prevents waste due to excessive application. Vegetable shortening, butter, margarine or petroleum derivatives (petroleum jelly) should never be used as carrier oils. OLIVE OIL | V-6 VEGETABLE OIL | COCONUT OIL | GRAPESEED OIL JOJOBA OIL | ALMOND OIL | ROSEHIP SEED OIL We recommend BOTH organic and cold-pressed. Be sure to dilute according to the di-rections on the back of your Young Living essential oil bottle. You can find most of these carrier oils in your local grocery store! We love the V-6 Carrier Oil from Young Living! • Carrier oil will help prevent the essential oils from evaporating and helps a little oil go a long way! • Essential oils are very potent and some are considered “hot”. Carrier oils will aid in skin irritation or sensitivity. • Carrier oils can be used for natural lotions, creams, body oils, bath oils, lip balms and other moisturizing skin care products. • If you get essential oils in your eye, DO NOT use water. Dilute with a drop of carrier oil to slow the absorption
8 • You can add a drop of oil to a glass of water or beverage of choice or to a teaspoon of honey. Be prepared for a flavor blast! Always use glass when adding essential oils to your water. Essential oils can break down plastic releasing the toxins found in the plastic. • You can add a couple drops in a gelatin capsule along with carrier oil.. Capsules can be purchased through Young Living. Citrus oils will dissolve capsules—so make and take immedi-ately. • Another option, is to take a teaspoon full of coconut oil and add a drop or two of essential oil of your choice, take internally followed by a glass of water. • For those who enjoy the strong flavors, you can put a drop directly under your tongue. You may use this technique with Thieves blend as an immune support. Peppermint to freshen your breath. • And finally, we love cooking with them. Since some of the healing properties may be lost with the heat of cooking, it is best to use them at the end of the cooking process. • TIP: Young Living’s essential oils are the same. Vitality is labeled for in-ternal usage and the regular oils for topical and aromatic usage. But the oils of the same kind are equal in every way – they come from the same farms, from the same plants, are bottled the same way, and so on. The only difference is the label.
9 Topical application of oils allows them to quickly enter the bloodstream and circulate throughout the body. As the oils are applied and absorbed into the skin, the scent is in-haled giving a double benefit. Due to their natural molecular composition, Young Living essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically. Appli-cation of essential oils can have immediate localized benefits to the target area of appli-cation. • Follow directions on the back of each bottle regarding dilu-tion recommendations. • Test an area first. Start with a drop of oil. Make sure you read the recommendations. • Massage a few drops of es-sential oil plus a carrier oil of your choice on your body. • Roll onto desired area with roller or apply onto desired area “neat” (without carrier oil). We recommend using carrier oils.
10 When essential oils are inhaled, the molecules rise to the top of the nose and meet the olfactory mucous membrane. The olfactory membrane has thousands of receptors that identify the smell and thus, the sensory stimulation is sent through the olfactory bulb, which acts as an amplifier, through the olfactory nerve into the limbic system of the brain. This is the oldest area of the brain. It deals with emotional and psychological responses. The limbic system is triggered by nerve impulses. The scent is compared to a known scent, compared and labeled, thus we can have memories associat-ed with the scent information and react emotionally and physically through our autonomic nervous system. These responses are determined by the specific qualities of the essential oil being used, and can range from relaxing to stimulating. The nerve impulse in the limbic system leads to other areas of the brain that are responsible for secreting hormones and regulating body functions. The entire process from the initial inhalation of the oil to corresponding gland secretion takes place in a matter of seconds. Therefore, a simple inhalation can cause changes in the body from stimulating the immune system, to initiating the digestive system into action and so on. • Inhale directly. Drop 1-2 drops in the palm of your hand, using your “peace” fingers to activate the oil with 3 clockwise circles. Inhale deeply. • Diffuse using your diffuser. Add water first, then add a few drops of oil. • You can add a few drops to a bowl of hot water and create a tent-like atmosphere using a towel over your head. Inhale deeply.

27 Young Living essential oils are cultivated to be as pure and potent as possible. We strongly recommend you read individual label instructions and the following guidelines to ensure safe use of essential oils: • The stopper located in the oil bottle opening helps you follow correct dosages. It also helps prevent small children from accidentally swallowing large amounts of essential oil. If you suspect that a child has consumed a large quantity of oil, give them milk and seek medical advice. • When applying a new oil, test 1 drop on a small patch of skin first (e.g., on the underside of the forearm). Skin sensitivity is highly individual. If the skin feels hot or turns red, apply a carrier oil to the area to dilute. Using water is less effective. • Use only 1 new oil at a time to determine how your body responds. Wait 30 minutes before applying another new oil. • Avoid putting essential oils directly into the ears. • Pure citrus oils may compound the effects of sun exposure. Limit prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for up to 12 hours (up to 24 hours for angelica and lime; up to 48 hours for bergamot) after applying these undiluted essential oils to the skin. • Cosmetics, personal-care products, or cleansers with synthetic ingredients penetrate the dermal layers of the skin. Avoid applying essential oils to areas where you use these products, as it may take these chemicals deeper into skin, tissue, or bloodstream. • Avoid using essential oils on skin that has been damaged or affected by chemical burns. • When adding essential oils to a bath, first mix 5–10 drops of essential oil to 1/4 cup of Young Living Bath & Shower Gel Base or Epsom salt and then add to running water. • Limit the diffusion of unfamiliar essential oils to 10 minutes/day, increasing the time after determining their effects. The length of time should depend on the size of the room and potency of the oils. • See individual label directions or check with a health professional before using essential oils if you have a serious medical condition or are preg-nant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant. DO NOT use wild tansy, clary sage, sage, fennel, wintergreen, or hyssop during pregnancy. • Consult a health professional about any serious disease or injury.
