Edition 106 Spring 2017 www fwbchildrenshome org A Good Dose of Humor By Carrie Brown A strong work ethic clean living and a sense of humor These are the secrets to a long and healthy life at least according to Alfred and William Bill Rich 25 31 These two gentlemen arrived at the Children s Home in 1925 at the ages of 5 and 3 years old with Alfred promising his younger brother that he would look after him This has held true for many years with Bill now transitioning into the role of looking after Alfred These brothers spent just over 5 years at The Home following the death of their father and subsequent grandparent illnesses before returning to live with their paternal grandfather They fondly remember their time at The Home reminiscing about everything from Superintendent J R Bennett 29 34 helping them dam a stream to create a swimming pool to learning how to plow and developing a value for honest hard work Bill Rich Alfred and Bill talked about his tenth birthday and receiving his first birthday present a jar of peanut butter chosen because it would last longer than candy They spoke of scuffles with older boys and looking out for each other as well as the hated mule Molly Both Alfred and Bill served in the military as adults and are now living in a VFW Veterans Village in Florida that they love They contribute their long life to the lessons learned at The Home that honest hard work and clean living will take you far The Rich brothers also maintain an incredible sense of humor that has allowed them to look for the good in every situation My sister and I had the great honor and pleasure to visit with Alfred and Bill over Christmas They are truly a part of America s greatest generation focusing on living life to the fullest every day They contribute their long life to the lessons learned at the Home that honest hard work and clean living will take you far

Loving God Loving Each Other Our Church Ministry and campus theme Loving God Loving Each Other translated beautifully for our 31st annual Friends of Children Appreciation Day We are truly blessed to have people who demonstrate their love of God and others by giving to The Home Our Friends of Children program consists of dedicated individuals families churches and groups who have made a commitment to donate to The Home on a monthly basis They show their love for our children through this program They also give of their time and talents visiting The Home spending time with our kids and bringing needed items throughout the year Whitley Center was beautifully decorated for the occasion with red white and black decorations courtesy of Dianne Riley Gray Director of Church Ministry and Vernie and Susan Fountain of Bethlehem FWB and others The event began with lunch provided by Wilbur s BBQ of Goldsboro and Jean Wise of Shady Grove FWB on the piano The Messengers from Stoney Creek FWB and Rains Crossroads FWB s Traci 3 Radford delivered wonderful messages in song during the program Alumna Judy Roberson addressed the group as to her experiences living at The Home and how fortunate she is to be able to help support those who currently call this place home Foster parent Consuelo Smith addressed the group on what she had learned about loving children through fostering and how the kids can positively impact your life as you positively impact theirs The featured speaker of the day was Dr Brad Williamson pastor of Lee s Chapel FWB Church He recounted the tale of a modern day and extremely relevant Good Samaritan which many people tried to help without actually giving him what he needed most This message reminded us that there is more to being a Christian than simply talking about it you have to be willing to get physically involved even when 5 those who need help come from different backgrounds Children s Home President CEO Gary Lee concluded the event with a heart warming story about visiting one of our foster homes and spending time with their children He talked about the impact that loving each other and our children has on everyone In Loving God Loving Each Other we focus on what that looks and sounds like how it affects everything you do and ways to demonstrate it even when it s difficult 1 1 The Messengers Stoney Creek FWB Goldsboro 2 The Reverend Dr Michael Pelt 3 The Reverend Dr Brad Williamson pastor of Lee s Chapel FWB Dunn 4 Judy Roberson FOC member and alumna 5 Consuelo Smith Foster Parent 6 Traci Radford Rains Crossroads FWB Kenly 3 CHILDREN S HOME LIFE 2 4 6

In With the New A s the sun was setting a convoy of trucks made their way down Buck Deans Road this was it the long awaited moment had arrived the new steeple was finally here After nearly eight months of waiting the steeple was here and ready to be installed just in time for Friends of Children Appreciation Day that weekend When work began the next morning the old steeple was removed and gently lowered to the yard beside the church as staff gathered outside to watch Over the next three days crews gracefully removed all the elements of the former steeple and replaced it with the new one In the 64 years of Memorial Chapel s existence this is only its second steeple By Saturday everything was in place and beautiful except for the music For many years the previous steeple played music three times each day and could be heard everywhere on campus and in the surrounding area The new steeple lacked the necessary speakers for the hymns to be broadcast so the campus was quieter than usual for the next month With Christmas approaching Mr Batchelor was determined to bring music back to the steeple He was able to set up the old speakers in the new steeple and music was once again heard throughout the campus Christmas carols could be heard morning noon and evening putting the final touches on both the steeple and holiday preparations The new steeple is beautiful and complements Memorial Chapel well adding a fresh new look to the church Thank you to everyone who supported this endeavor and donated to the 2016 Steeple Project Experiencing God For the second year in a row the Church Ministry program has developed a theme around which to center all campus activities Last year s theme of Loving God Loving Each Other encompassed every event on campus including spiritual life week weekly worship services and Friends of Children s Day This year s theme Experiencing God s Presence Wherever You Are will be also embraced by the campus and all that we do throughout the year The theme evolved during our Sunday evening worship through discussion between the young people and Dianne Riley Gray Director of Church Ministry The discussion centered on life the good times and bad life s mountains and valleys and the hurts and successes we face on a daily basis They also talked about where we see God how we feel Him and how He is with us no matter where we are Experiencing God s Presence Wherever You Are will be used as a launching point from which we will plan staff and cottage devotions campus events spiritual life programs Friends of Children s Day and more If you have a devotion that centers on this theme please share it with us by contacting Dianne RileyGray at the Children s Home 4 CHILDREN S HOME LIFE
