Day 1 Welcome to our Forest Friends We hope these cheeky critters will help make letter formation learning fun Before we launch into forming real letters it s best to practise the strokes that will join together to form letters in later parts The idea behind our Forest Friends is to give you and your learner a common vocabulary that is linked to memorised visual strokes See page 4 for more information on this concept When practising strokes make sure your learner is sitting upright with both arms resting on the table Part 1 Strokes Tall stick Caterpillar Butterfly feeler Stink bug v Tulip u Rainbow u Short stick Found in the letters Found in the letters Found in the letters Found in the letters Found in the letters Found in the letters Found in the letters i a m n r u l b d h k t j g y f v w u y n h m The Tripod Grip The Tripod Grip is the ideal pencil hold but this is still developing in some learners It is best to guide them once and then try again the next time rather than pursuing perfection For more tips see https www ot mom learning activities com correct pencil grasp html 9 2020 Adept Education Limited

OBSERVE Day 3 The Parts of the Writing Line FOR PARENTS Next we need to consider the parts of the writing line to make sure communication with your learner is seamless later As your learner memorises the strokes of writing they will need verbal cues from you to guide their marks Having a common language around the parts of the writing line will save you a lot of anguish A system that nicely fits with our Forest Friends theme is the sky grass ground model Learners come to know that most letters are written in the grass layer of the writing line some letters start in the sky and some finish in the ground We introduce this now because this week s letter finishes in the ground under the line abcdefghi jk Sky line Grass line Ground line Under the ground line Go through these questions with your learner before moving on to the caterpillar It s ok to keep coming back to this page to reinforce this learning Can you point to the sky line Can you point to the ground line Can you point to the grass line Which line does the short stick stroke start at Where does it finish Which line does the tall stick stroke start at Where does it finish 12 2020 Adept Education Limited
