More Than Morphology Book C The Importance of Multiple Meaning Words Multiple meaning words are words that are spelled the same and have a different meaning. These words are VERY important in the development of vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension. Multiple meaning words will aid in teaching reading comprehension. When the student comprehends text, they will be able to identify the correct definition for a multiple meaning word and/or be able to generate their own definition for the multiple meaning word using context clues in the sentence and their schema. Another goal is for students to write about the new words they have learned and generate original sentences. Also, identifying what part of speech is being used is critical when studying multiple meaning words. Many words that sound the same and are spelled the same are used as different parts of speech. For example, the word pool can be used as a noun and also used as a verb. My uncle’s swimming pool is five feet deep. (noun) The water from the lake will pool at our feet when it rains too much. (verb)

More Than Morphology Book C The Importance of Expanding Vocabulary Knowledge It is TOO late to start EXPANDING VOCABULARY KNOWLEDGE in high school. Vocabulary development at an earlier age is crucial to building the Lexile reading levels of younger students. This book has been developed to teach SYNONYMS and ANTONYMS of these higher-level vocabulary words in conjunction with the definition of the word. This allows students to learn up to twelve words at a time while focusing on the EXPANDING VOCABULARY word. Students will also be asked to use the new words in context and write an ending to a story or dialogue sentences with their newfound knowledge of the EXPANDING VOCABULARY word.

More Than Morphology Book C The Importance of Context Clues Context Clues are crucial to developing vocabulary in all levels of elementary school, middle, and high school. Students should not rely on dictionaries or “apps” to look up unfamiliar words. This involves the practice of reading the words around unfamiliar words and using the “context” of those words to gain meaning of the text and ultimately the unfamiliar word. Using context clues will ultimately lead to comprehension of text and newly introduced vocabulary words. Teachers cannot overuse the strategy of teaching context clues. Using context clues should be a daily/hourly strategy in all subject areas.

More Than Morphology Book C The Importance of Applying Vocabulary with Writing At the end of each EXPANDING VOCABULARY section is a writing portion. This should be utilized so that students are USING the new vocabulary words that they learn in the EXPANDING VOCABULARY section. The APPLYING VOCABULARY writing prompts are given so the students will write an ending to the prompt or dialogue that relates to the prompt while using synonyms and antonyms of the EXPANDING VOCABULARY WORD learned on the previous pages. Not only have students learned a new vocabulary word, but they have learned many ADDITIONAL synonyms and antonyms of that new word. The writing portion will enhance students’ knowledge of the new vocabulary word as they apply it to the writing task.

Using the knowledge of learning new prefixes and suffixes is critical to vocabulary development.

First Responders Our local Fire Department is fortunate to have a very nice facility. They not only have nice buildings to house their fire trucks but also have what is called a Burn Building on the property. The Burn Building was set up so that firemen could practice putting out fires inside of structures such as houses and buildings. The firemen carefully create a situation where enough fuel is mixed with oxygen creating combustion. The firemen practice drills to learn how to move through scorching and spontaneous hot flames and fire. They must wear their protective gear and special mask over their faces and mouths. Even when they think they have moved to a location that is not on fire in the building it may suddenly ignite. Firemen are a part of a special group of people that we call First Responders because they are often the first to arrive when we are in need or see that something is up in smoke! Give your opinion. Is it important for our safety to have First Responders in our towns and cities? Why or why not? Give evidence from the text to support your answer. Use a variety of synonyms and antonyms for the word “combustion” in your answer.

Dwayne had never been a member of a group of people who performed in a play or a movie, but he had memorized all of the lines for the lead. The week before tryouts Dwayne was running and fell. He was afraid he’d broken his ankle and would need a cast2 on his ankle. He hoped to avoid all of the plaster that would need to harden on his ankle. However, the doctor said his ankle was broken, so he put a cast on Dwayne’s ankle. Dwayne’s sister, Darcy, was cleaning out her room when he went home. She said, “Mom told me to cast3 out the trash from my closet before she gets home or I will be grounded.” Mom returned home just as the kids finished Darcy’s closet. Mom said, “Thank you guys for cleaning out Darcy’s closet. I’m exhausted tonight. The line for voting for mayor was long. I cast4 my vote even though I was really tired.” Dwayne was fortunate, or lucky, during auditions. Even though he had a cast on his ankle, he was able to sit on the dock and pretend like he was fishing. He cast5 the fishing pole into the pretend lake just as he’d practiced all of the weeks before. The director didn’t seem to mind his broken ankle and cast6 him for the lead role!
