More Than Morphology Book B The Importance of Multiple Meaning Words Multiple meaning words are words that are spelled the same and have a different meaning. These words are VERY important in the development of vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension. Multiple meaning words will aid in teaching reading comprehension. When the student comprehends text, they will be able to identify the correct definition for a multiple meaning word and/or be able to generate their own definition for the multiple meaning word using context clues in the sentence and their schema. Another goal is for students to write about the new words they have learned and generate original sentences. Also, identifying what part of speech is being used is critical when studying multiple meaning words. Many words that sound the same and are spelled the same are used as different parts of speech. For example, the word pool can be used as a noun and also used as a verb. My uncle’s swimming pool is five feet deep. (noun) The water from the lake will pool at our feet when it rains too much. (verb)

More Than Morphology Book B The Importance of Expanding Vocabulary Knowledge It is TOO late to start EXPANDING VOCABULARY KNOWLEDGE in high school. Vocabulary development at an earlier age is crucial to building the Lexile reading levels of younger students. This book has been developed to teach SYNONYMS and ANTONYMS of these higher-level vocabulary words in conjunction with the definition of the word. This allows students to learn up to twelve words at a time while focusing on the EXPANDING VOCABULARY word. Students will also be asked to use the new words in context and write an ending to a story or dialogue sentences with their newfound knowledge of the EXPANDING VOCABULARY word.

More Than Morphology Book B The Importance of Context Clues Context Clues are crucial to developing vocabulary in all levels of elementary school, middle, and high school. Students should not rely on dictionaries or “apps” to look up unfamiliar words. This involves the practice of reading the words around unfamiliar words and using the “context” of those words to gain meaning of the text and ultimately the unfamiliar word. Using context clues will ultimately lead to comprehension of text and newly introduced vocabulary words. Teachers cannot overuse the strategy of teaching context clues. Using context clues should be a daily/hourly strategy in all subject areas.

More Than Morphology Book B The Importance of Applying Vocabulary with Writing At the end of each EXPANDING VOCABULARY section is a writing portion. This should be utilized so that students are USING the new vocabulary words that they learn in the EXPANDING VOCABULARY section. The APPLYING VOCABULARY writing prompts are given so the students will write an ending to the prompt or dialogue that relates to the prompt while using synonyms and antonyms of the EXPANDING VOCABULARY WORD learned on the previous pages. Not only have students learned a new vocabulary word, but they have learned many ADDITIONAL synonyms and antonyms of that new word. The writing portion will enhance students’ knowledge of the new vocabulary word as they apply it to the writing task.

Using the knowledge of learning new prefixes and suffixes is critical to vocabulary development.

He practiced continually when he wasn’t in school. Even when he was at school, he practiced during recess. Marcos and his friends would set up a goal and practice until the bell rang. Marcos knew tryouts for the school soccer team were in two weeks. He planned to practice every day up until then. Marcos knew it was inconceivable that he would make the team, but he knew he had to try. There were several reasons why he felt it was unlikely that he would make the team. The first one was because he was a lot younger than all of the other kids who were trying out. The other reason was because Marcos didn’t think he was good enough. Some of the older kids would make fun of him when he and his friends were practicing. His brother told him not to let those kids bother him, because he thought they were just jealous. However, their teasing did bother him. Every day Marcos imagined that he would make the team. On the day of the tryouts Marcos was really anxious. He felt uneasy when he saw all of the bigger kids talking and laughing before try outs started. When it was his turn to try out, Marcos took a deep breath. He wasn’t sure he could take the field. Write an ending to the story about Marcos and what happened at soccer tryouts. Use the word “inconceivable” and a variety of synonyms and antonyms to make your story more interesting.

She always took pictures and videos of Kayden when he was growing up. Kayden didn’t really appreciate Grandma and what she did for him. Kayden’s dad told him he needed to be more appreciative. “It’s great for older people to be able to look back at pictures and videos of when their grandchildren were younger,” Dad said. “This gives Grandma a feeling of nostalgia. This makes her long for the days when you were little. One day you will want to see these videos too.” Kayden wasn’t sure about wanting to see videos of himself later on in life, but he told Dad he would think about it. The next day at school Kayden’s teacher told the kids about a project called “All About Me”. Kayden had one week to bring in a poster with pictures about his life or bring in a video about his life so far. That made Kayden think maybe Grandma was right after all. After school Kayden went over to Grandma’s house. Kayden said, “ __________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ____________________________________________.” Grandma said, “_________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ____________________________________________.”

One thing they liked to do was watch for the turtle eggs to hatch down at the beach. Sometimes it would take several weeks for the eggs to hatch. Shelby and Shay would go down to the beach with flashlights and watch for the turtles. Each morning Shelby’s mother would scramble1 eggs for breakfast. That was one of Shelby’s favorite meals of the day. Usually, at least once during their family vacation, Shelby’s dad would take her to the air base that was close to the beach. The whole family had fun watching the air show. The air show was the highlight of their trip. Last year, when they were watching the air show, an alarm sounded! It was the signal for the jets to scramble2. Immediately, the show stopped, and all the pilots ran to the jets to get them up into the air as soon as possible. Shelby and Shay were both upset, but Dad told them that everything would be okay. Dad told both girls that it was probably just a drill and not to be alarmed. That same night, they had more excitement! Shelby and Shay went down to the beach with their older cousin, Geneva. Geneva was older, so she was allowed to take the girls down to the beach at night. This was the fourth night that they had waited with their flashlights and watched the turtle nests. After about an hour, they started seeing movement! The turtles were hatching out of their shells. The girls watched with awe as the baby turtles tried to scramble3 their way down to the beach. Shelby took out her phone so she could call the family to come and see the baby turtles. Something was wrong with the signal and her phone wouldn’t work. It was a shame that the cell phone company had chosen that night to scramble4 the cell signals! She so wanted the rest of the family to come see the magnificent sight of the turtles hatching and scrambling down the beach to the water!

I can’t help it if Poppa is coming to visit.” Jamie’s mom said, “He is coming to see us and to spend some time with you. His life has been empty since Grandmother died. There is a void in Poppa’s life now. We as his family need to help fill that space in his heart that is missing now.” “Missing? Sometimes people miss another person, or sometimes it’s an activity. Like when you broke your arm and you couldn’t swim for a whole summer. Didn’t you feel like something was missing?” “Yes, I did!
