Virtually all migratory birds rely on water and its associated habitats at some point during their annual life cycles. Lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, wetlands, and coastal waters are all vital for feeding, drinking, or nesting, and as places to rest and refuel during long seasonal migrations.Unfortunately, these aquatic ecosystems are becoming increasingly threatened around the world, and so are the migratory birds that depend on them. e growing human demand for water, as well as pollution and climate change, is having a direct impact on the quantity and quality of water resources and on the conservation status of many migratory bird species.In 2023, the importance of water is the focus of World Migratory Bird Day, an annual global campaign that celebrates the migration of birds across countries and continents. roughout the year, we will spread the message that “water sustains bird life” and provide actions for managing water resources and protecting healthy aquatic ecosystems.Agua: vital para las avesEl agua es fundamental para sustentar la vida en nuestro planeta. Each year, artists from around the world submit their work to be carefully considered by a panel of reviewers, and one artist is selected. Augusto Silva was chosen to create the art that will reect this year’s conservation theme of the importance of water for migratory birds. Born in Bilwi, on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, Augusto is known for his colorful murals depicting various areas of Nicaragua. He holds a degree in plastic arts from the National School of Arts in Managua and a degree in cultural sciences from the Universidad Centroamericana. Augusto’s work is inuenced by the traditional life of the Afro-Caribbean indigenous community and pre-Columbian petroglyphs. His work is inspired largely by the landscape, environment, and people of the Caribbean Sea. Augusto depicts elements of nature such as mangroves, estuaries, sea life, and ora and fauna, illustrated in a geometric and colorful style. He currently lives and works in Managua.Parte vital de las celebraciones del Día Mundial de las Aves Migratorias es elarte que reeja nuestro tema anual de conservación. Cada año, artistas alrededor del mundo envían sus trabajos para que sean cuidadosamente revisados por un panel de expertos quienes luego eligen un artista. Augusto Silva fue seleccionado para crear el arte que reejará el tema de conservación de este año: la importancia que tiene el agua para las aves migratorias. Nacido en Bilwi, en la costa caribeña de Nicaragua, Augusto sobresale por sus coloridos murales que representan varias áreas de Nicaragua.
