2News & Events December 12, 2023Winter EditionLatinos In Action Foodrive!By: Evaly Rosales, and Esther Jean, 7th GradeDuring the month of November, Latinos in Action held a food drive in order to donate collected items to the Guatemalan Center. They wanted to donate to this center because “it is the local community outreach center serving our students and neighborhood.” Thanksgiving is when people get together and give thanks for what they have and consider what they might need for the future. Upon their own reflection, the group decided Thanksgiving would be a good time of year to give to those who are in need. All first period classes were invited to participate in this event. According to Ms.Alvarado, the LIA sponsor on our campus, the school “did very well, and we should be proud about the amount of donations as well as the participation across all grade levels and staff.” After collecting all the cans, they announced that Mr. Purpuris' class won! His class collected “12 bags of donations followed by Ms. Mills and Ms. Tepper’s classes.” In total, the school donated “approximately 60 bags full of canned food and other non-perishable items.” After running such a successful food drive, we wondered what kind of outreach they are planning next. Ms. Alvarado responded by saying, “This is classified information. But I bet we will knock your socks off!”Thank you to all of the students in LIA, Mr. Purpuri’s class, and all of the students and staff of L.C. Swain for your part in the food drive outreach program. Our school is making a difference, making someone's life easier and happier by helping provide when they are in need. We can’t wait to see what LIA has in store throughout the rest of the year.■Mr. Purpuri’s class collected the most food!Look at that haul! Swain staff and students donated over 60 bags of food!

3Christmas Around The World!By: Kevin Derius, 7th GradeDo you think that every country celebrates Christmas the same way? Well if you guessed yes, you’d be wrong. Some countries celebrate differently than others and there are countries that don't celebrate Christmas at all .Continue reading to find out different winter holiday traditions in other countries, and also learn how some of our very own Stallions celebrate Christmas here in town. Many countries across the globe celebrate Christmas, but some countries celebrate differently. In Israel, Hanukkah is celebrated instead. Even though many people in the United States celebrate this holiday also, the country of Israel celebrates with some unique traditions. They often have students present plays, they have musical shows, and they play a game with a spinning top called a dreidel. They also light eight candles in a stand called a menorah and eat fried foods such as filled donuts and potato pancakes called latkes. Christmas traditions vary widely around the world as well. In Mexico, for example, families participate in "Las Posadas," a nine-day celebration reenacting Mary and Joseph's search for a place to stay. In Germany, the advent calendar is a popular tradition, with families opening a numbered door each day leading up to Christmas and in Japan, it's common to celebrate Christmas with a meal of KFC which is a tradition that began as a marketing campaign in the 1970s. These are just a few examples of the diverse and fascinating Christmas traditions found in different countries around the world. Even some of our L.C. Swain Stallions celebrate differently. Litzania Omeir, a sixth grader states, “In Nicaragua we have kinda like a carnival each year and there are people dancing on the streets in dresses and playing loud music” which sounds like fun! Also Jemina Estime, an eighth grader states, “In Haiti, they don't have Christmas trees. Instead of all that we eat, play a few games, then pass out gifts that we had for secret santa. We do that every year. And also before the new year we eat this soup called soup joumou.” Liliana Guzman states that “In Mexico, around January we celebrate Dia de los Reyes. We write a letter of things we want and tie them to a balloon and let them go.” As you can see, there are many different ways our stallions enjoy celebrating Christmas. It’s amazing how one holiday can bring about so many different and unique traditions. Most traditions are passed down between family members, but it can be fun to start new traditions as well. Whatever traditions you choose, the key to all celebrations is enjoying them with friends and family.■News & Events December 12, 2023Winter Edition

9Editorials & Reviews December 12, 2023Winter EditionLana Del Rey is one of the most influential artists of our time. She has inspired singers like Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, and Melanie Martinez. Lana Del Rey has been given the title of the “Queen of Sadness” because her songs contain lyrics talking about deep topics with slow beats. Her songs also have amazing lyrics and instrumentals.Lana Del Rey’s highest grossing tour “La to the Moon” was her most popular concert for her 4th studio album “Lust for Life”. She loves receiving gifts from her fans during concerts. She also engages with them by taking pictures with them during her songs. Del Rey had her breakthrough in 2012 with her first album “Born To Die” and she became viral overnight. She talked about this album and how the songs dealt with her struggles as a teenager. She once said she felt everything she needed to say with this album. One song for example “Video Games” talks about loving someone so much you're willing to do anything for them.Lana Del Rey expresses her sadness through her songs, causing other singers to shame her for being vulnerable and speaking out about her feelings and her life. However, she has continued to defend herself from what other people have to say about her by addressing it in her songs. Her fans also support her and some may even say her vulnerability creates the strong connection between her and her fans. If you have never listened to one of her songs, look her up on your favorite streaming app. Her songs just hit differently.■Lana Del Rey: Songs of the HeartBy: Katelyn Velasquez, 8th GradeWhat is your favorite Thanksgiving meal?By: Izeyael Laborde, 7th Grade
