rounding with rickRick Scott, CFRE President, Presbyterian Healthcare FoundationPresbyterian Healthcare Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. When you give, 100% of your gi is directed toward improving the health and lives of New Mexicans. No portion of your gi supports fundraising or administrative expenses. The Season of Giving and GratitudeThis is the season of giving. For Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation, it’s also the season of gratitude as we gratefully accept year-end charitable contributions from many donors. If you’re thinking about a year-end gift, I would encourage you to support an area that brings you joy. Consider one of our fundraising priorities such as the hybrid OR (profiled in this issue on p. 6), Presbyterian Community Health (such as the Food Farmacy) or workforce development (nursing and staffeducation). Gifts this time of year are most often in the form of cash. But as you think about 2025 and beyond, consider the possibilities for supporting our work with a gift in your will or trust. For many of our donors, a deferred, or planned, gift is truly the gift of a lifetime, allowing them to support our work in a big way, which otherwise might not be possible. We’re honored to discuss the possibilities for a legacy gift with you. For more information, visit www.phs.org/giftplanning. In this season of giving and gratitude, I extend heartfelt thanks to all of our donors. Special thank you to Presbyterian Volunteer Services for reaching the $10 million cumulative giving mark. Thank you for entrusting us with your charitable support. You have my very best wishes for 2025.Smart Ways to Make Year-End Gis • Donor-Advised Funds work like a charitable savings account that gives you the flexibility to recommend how much and how often money is granted to PHF and other qualified charities. You can make an immediate impact by recommending a grant or recurring grants or use your fund as a tool for future charitablegifts. • Gifts of Appreciated Stock allow you to avoid capital gains tax and qualify for an income tax deduction based on today’s market when you itemize. Contact your brokerage firm, bank, or investment advisor for the exact process required to make this donation. For transfer instructions, contact us at (505) 724-6580 or visit www.phs.org/giftplanning. • IRA Charitable Rollovers orQCDs (qualified charitable distributions) are a popular gift option that allow you to support PHF through your IRA, save on taxes and see the difference your donation is making today. Those 70½ years old and older can give up to $105,000 from their IRA directly to a qualified charity such as PHF without having to pay income tax. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize yourdeductions. For more information about making a year-end gift, contact Ken Thompson, CFRE, at (505) 362-3310 or kthompson16@phs.org. PresbyterianHealthcare Foundation Board Memberwho’s on boardRich joined the PHF board in 2022 and chairs the Community Health Committee, which fundraises for Presbyterian Community Health initiatives designed to promote health equity by removing obstacles within three priority areas: behavioral health, social health and physical health. The Community Health Food Farmacy, a referral-based food pantry program serving approximately 500 patients at two sites in Albuquerque, is a top fundraisingpriority.“I jumped at the chance to serve on the Community Health Committee. These types of challenges are very obvious and easy for people to understand. It’s really easy to think about philanthropy when it’s connected to people who have such need,” Rich says.Bridgers & Paxton has been involved in hundreds of construction projects for Presbyterian. As an engineer, Rich has worked on many of them, including Presbyterian Hospital, Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital, and expansions at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis. Both Bridgers & Paxton founder Frank Bridgers and past president Doug Guinn are emeritus members of the PHF board; past Bridgers & Paxton president Mike Dexter served as well.“The engineer in me loves seeing how health care works. Being involved in something as important and expansive as health care, and being involved with Presbyterian, which is such a pillar in the community, really makes me feel good. I soak in everything I can when we bring the Community Health folks together,” Rich says.Rich ReifIn a partnership that dates back nearly 75 years, Presbyterian and Bridgers & Paxton Engineering have “kind of grown up together,” says Rich Reif, president of Bridgers & Paxton and a Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation (PHF) board member.Rich has served on the Bridgers & Paxton board of directors for 22 years, serving as president for the pasttwo.“Rich follows a long line of Bridgers & Paxton leaders who have served on our board and provided meaningful contributions. He has a sincere interest in our mission and has personally invested in our Community Health work. We are so grateful for his leadership on our newly formed Community Healthcommiee.”– Rick Sco “My goal has always been to leave things beer than I found them.” – Rich ReifWinter 2024 3

Genevieve’s creative approach carries through many parts of her life. At age 13, she taught herself how to ride a unicycle, which is how she got around the University of New Mexico campus as a student. This is Genevieve’s second Guardian Angelaward.Make Someone’s Day Guardian Angel gifts are a meaningful way to express gratitude for a Presbyterian physician, nurse or employee who provided exceptional care. Your gift can benefit their department with funds for new programs and equipment, and we’ll present them with a certificate and lapel pin. To learn more, call (505) 724-7003 or visit www.phs.org/guardianangel. When Genevieve Sanchez was six years old, her family moved from Louisiana to New Mexico to be closer to her grandparents. They played an influential role in her life, and in her grandfather’s final days, a beautiful inpatient hospice experience inspired Genevieve to pursue hospice nursingherself.Today, she is a hospice outpatient registered nurse care manager at Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital/El Camino. Tanya Kil and her family recently recognized Genevieve with a Guardian Angel award for the compassionate care she provided to Tanya’s mother, Vicki Bakker. In addition to Genevieve’s professionalism, outstanding care, and gentle explanations of what to expect, Tanya recalls how Genevieve provided many personal touches, from celebrating her parents’ 58-year wedding anniversary and encouraging stories about their life together, to helping Tanya’s father sort her mother’s medications.“From the moment Genevieve walked into my parents’ home to care for my dying mother, we knew things were going to be ok. Besides exuding professionalism and knowledge, she brought joy into our home and had a way to make us laugh and relax,” Tanya says. “The day of my mother’s death, Genevieve went above and beyond to make sure Mom was not in pain. I have worked with hospice before but NEVER have I seen an individual so knowledgeable, passionate and excellent in thisfield.”“Each patient and family come with their own specific needs and dynamics. I do my best to observe and then adjust based on those needs. Most complex needs can be helped with creative problem solving.” – Genevieve Sanchez, RNCMWinter 2024 5
cover storyInvesting in Access to High-Quality HealthcareTo ensure that NewMexicans can receive local treatment for conditions like stroke, aneurysms, blocked carotid arteries and other neurological and cardiovascular surgical issues, Presbyterian has embarked on an exciting project. A new hybrid operating room at Presbyterian Hospital is designed to improve access to advanced neuroscience and heart/vascular care, and will elevate our ability to care for more patients with more complex needs.A hybrid OR combines imaging and operating equipment in one space, including both minimally invasive and open-surgical capabilities. Care teams have everything they need in one room and patients do not need to be moved during procedures. An important feature of the hybrid OR is biplane technology, which uses two rotating cameras, one on each side of the patient, to take simultaneous images. The hybrid OR is scheduled for completion by 2026 and will be supported by two new, specially trained neurosurgeons who are scheduled to join Presbyterian Medical Group in 2025.Hybrid Operating Room Will Benefit Neurology and Cardiac Patients“Supporting patient access and our care teams is a big focus of our fundraising efforts. This project will elevate Presbyterian’s capabilities, allowing more patients to receive care in New Mexico. It also provides the infrastructure necessary to aract top physicians to deliver thiscare.”– Rick Scott, PHF President6 Giving | Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation
The Need for PhilanthropyThe hybrid OR at Presbyterian Hospital is a $5.5 million project, $4million of which is funded by Presbyterian and the remaining $1.5 million by philanthropic contributions to Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation. Philanthropy has contributed more than $3 million to date to the Neuroscience program, including a $2 million gift to create the Julia Bowdich and John Carey Chair of Neuroscience, and an additional $1 million for equipment and training needs.PHF’s fundraising goal is to raise nearly $680,000 by July 9, 2025, which will unlock a $350,000 challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation and fulfill our $1.5 million commitment. For more information and to donate, visit give.phs.org/campaign/597807/donate or contact Tonna Burgos, Director of Donor Advising & Foundation Relations, at (505) 724-7144 or tburgos2@phs.orgPresbyterian Healthcare Services Names New CEORishi Sikka, MD, has been named Presbyterian Healthcare Services’ new CEO, effective Oct. 21, 2024. This notable achievement follows a generous gift of $340,000 from Volunteer Services via Presbyterian Gift Shop proceeds, making Volunteer Services the second donor in PHF history to reach the $10 million mark. Through the years, Volunteer Services has supported a wide range of needs including the campaigns for Presbyterian Rust Medical Center, Presbyterian Robert Wertheim Hospice House, Presbyterian Community Health and much more. Funds from this most recent contribution will go directly toward two Volunteer Services endowments and two major fundraising priorities for PHF: the Community Health Food Farmacy and the Pathways to Nursing Program. At the core of this accomplishment are more than 400 current, dedicated volunteers, whose passion for creating positive outcomes for New Mexicans remains at the forefront of their work ethic and who believe that giving time is just as important and valuable as any other aspect of our healthcare system. In 2023 alone, our volunteers contributed more than 63,000 hours, saving PHS nearly $2 million.Winter 2024 7
Whether they are hiking, working out at the gym or volunteering, Santa Fe residents Nick and Sandy McGovern Durrie will tell you they are “living the good life.” The two retired National Geographic senior TV executives moved from Washington, D.C., to Santa Fe just over 20 years ago and have never looked back.Durrie Gift to Benefit Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Centerplanned giving When Giving Back“Our philosophy is that this will eventually become money the hospital can use as they wish. Until then, it’s also a very good investment for us, especially in this world of temporarily high interest rates” Nick says.Gives Back8 Giving | Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation
For more information about CGAs, please visit the American Council on Gi Annuities website at hps://www.acga-web.org/current-gi-annuity-ratesHow Charitable Gift Annuities WorkCGAs allow donors to make an irrevocable gift – in the form of cash, securities, or other property – to Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation (PHF). PHF invests the funds, which generate income for the donor. PHF pays the donor a fixed monthly or quarterly income for life, based on factors such as age and life expectancy. When the donor dies, PHF receives the remaining gift balance. CGAs may be for one or two lives. In the case of a two-life CGA, PHF receives payment after the second death.Donors may also receive a variety of tax benefits, depending on how they fund their gift. The following assets may be used to fund a CGA:• Cash• Appreciated securities• Closely held stock• Real estate• Tangible personal property• IRA rollover assetsDonors age 70½ and older can make a one-time election of up to $50,000 to fund a gift annuity. While this gift does not qualify for an income tax deduction, it does escape income tax liability on the transfer and count toward all or part of the donor’s required minimumdistributions.Like the Durries, you, too, can make a gift in your estate that improves the lives of fellow New Mexicans and also meets your personal financial goals. To learn more, contact Justin Schroer, Development Director – Planned and Major Giving, at (505) 724-6580 or giftplanning@phs.org.“We realized we didn’t need to live in D.C. to do our jobs, so we drove our Explorer 25,000 miles trying to decide where we wanted to live. We were sitting in an outdoor hot tub in Santa Fe, when it started to snow. It was so beautiful… and that’s what sealed the deal,” Nick says. That was in 2003. Sandy and Nick continued to work as consultants until 2010, when they officially retired, but remained active on a variety of non-profit boards. They have dialed back some of their volunteer hours in recent years to take full advantage of all Santa Fe has to offer, especiallyhiking. Nick and Sandy both see Carl Friedrichs III, MD, at Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center for their primary care. As active people, they have required specialty medical care, including orthopedics and cardiology, which they received at Presbyterian in Santa Fe and at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. “We have worked with absolutely fabulous medical teams, which has been a great experience,” says Sandy. That appreciation played a role in the Durries’ recent gift to Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation in the form of a generous charitable gift annuity (CGA), which will ultimately benefit an area of greatest need at Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center.Winter 2024 9

Building the HALL reflects Presbyterian’s determination to help solve the shortage of healthcare professionals in NewMexico. The first groups to use the HALL are new nurses and students in the Presbyterian Nursing Career Pathways program. Powered by Brookline College, Presbyterian Nursing Career Pathways enables employees to launch their nursing career while keeping their current Presbyterian position. Employees can take advantage of flexible work scheduling, tuition assistance and job placement upongraduation.Ebenezer “Ebbie” Adam is an EMT-B and works as a patient care tech in the Emergency Department at Presbyterian Hospital. When Ebbie began at Presbyterian just over a year ago, he was a unit secretary with a plan to become an EMT. But through mentorship and encouragement from his managers, he recognized he could provide compassionate care at the bedside – something he wouldn't be able to do as anEMT. As a student in the Presbyterian Nursing Career Pathways Practical Nursing program, Ebbie now takes classes and attends labs and clinicals while continuing to serve as a patient care tech. He hopes to eventually earn his Doctorate in Nursing Practice and be an emergency roomprovider. The HALL is supported by Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation, which gave Presbyterian a generous $3.2 million gi to start the facility. Proceeds from the 2023 Laughter is the Best Medicine event helped fund additional technology for the facility, located at the Rev. Hugh Cooper Administrative Center. 10 Giving | Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation
