ROAS TMicah HodgesWhy Your Morning Coffee Is Costing More Than EverOver the past year, green coffee prices have surged dramatically- In fact, it reached a 47-year high. We all watch the price of oil to see how our fuel prices might be impacted, and coffee is no different. Every time my brows-er opens, I see the commodity price for coffee. (It’s geek-y, I know.) In the past twelve months, the price has doubled in response to a combination of environmental, economic, and supply chain challenges. This sharp increase has sent ripples across the global coffee market, impacting producers, consum-ers and all coffee suppliers. Understanding the factors may help every consumer better un-derstand why coffee prices go up, and what Queen Bee Coffee does to make a difference. A primary reason for the re-cent price surge is the weath-er’s impact on coffee-growing regions, particularly Brazil, the world’s largest coffee produc-er. In 2023, Brazil experienced severe droughts followed by unseasonal frost, devastating coffee plantations and reducing yields. Arabica coffee, the most popular variety, is highly sen-sitive to temperature changes, and extreme weather events have pushed production to multi-year lows. Furthermore, the droughts in some areas were followed by torrential rains, resulting in landslides. This added insult to injury with additional crop dam-age. In some areas, farmers have been forced to cut down coffee plants and replant; a process that can take several years to produce viable crops. With fewer coffee beans available for export, markets reacted quickly, driving up prices. To put this in perspective, let’s compare coffee to a crop of to-matoes. While tomatoes are also sensitive to weather conditions, they are annual crops, meaning they are planted and harvested within a single growing season. If a tomato eld is damaged, production can recover within a year. In contrast, coffee plants are perennial and take three to ve years to mature and pro-duce beans after replanting. This longer recovery time makes coffee more vulnerable to long-term supply disruptions caused by extreme weather. Another issue causing higher prices is the substantial increase in the cost of transporting cof-fee beans from coffee-growing regions in Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia to consum-er markets in Europe and North America. Port congestion and labor shortages in key coffee-ex-porting countries have slowed deliveries, creating supply bottlenecks that have pushed prices up even more. Additionally, ination im-pacts coffee, too, increasing coffee farmers’ costs. Fertiliz-ers, fuel, and labor costs have risen globally, placing addition-al nancial strain on produc-ers. Many small-scale farmers, who form the backbone of cof-fee production, have struggled to absorb these costs, leading to higher prices to remain eco-nomically sustainable. Looking ahead, coffee prices are likely to remain high in the near term. Restoring produc-tion levels in Brazil and other major coffee-producing nations will take time. For our cus-tomers here in Henry County, Queen Bee Coffee will continue to ght to nd the best coffee at the best prices so we can minimize the price you have to pay for your daily cup of cof-fee, whether at home or in our cafes. HENRYeatseats6SUPEROn The Cover Hampton: Poppin PizzaslicesSuper Bowl LIX will be here soon and HENRYeats is oering the dish on Henry County’s local pizzerias. Whether, you’re in Stockbridge, McDonough, Hampton or Locust Grove, there’s a great local pizza spot near you! We review four pizzerias in this diners’ dish, including with our contributors Jerry Belcastro, founder of the Pizza Cook O Association and former Italian restaura-teur. If anyone knows pizza, it’s him!iners’ ishdLocust Grove: I ♥ N.Y. Pizza Jerry Belcastro My rst journey for this edition took me to a hidden delight for pizza lovers….. “I ♥ New York Pizza”, which is located at 2678 Hwy 155, Locust Grove. I had to get the background on this real deal New York style pizza place, as I can say, I know a little something about pizza. e owners, Giovani Balzano, his sister Cater-ina Gravina, and her husband Vito Gravina, come from a rich Italian heritage of pizza makers from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, dating back three generations. And the authenticity will be very evident when you take that rst bite! Although I have eaten here a few times, I didn’t realize that they have such an extensive menu. ey prepare a full range of Italian dishes, including Lasagna, Chicken Parme-san, and the Baked Ziti Anna Maria, which are some of their most popular dishes. ey also oer great appetizers including wings, fries, and garlic knots to name a few. ey oer a variety of salads, sub sandwiches, calzones, Stromboli….and Specialty Pizzas! I was lucky with my timing, as Giovani was preparing some specialty pizzas that they sell by the slice. Selling “pizza by the slice” is very common in New York, and the size of the slices at I ♥ New York Pizza are HUGE! What also struck me was how fresh all the ingredients were, as I had a slice of the Primavera Pizza, which consisted of all fresh vegetables; here, they prep ingredients many times throughout the day, which makes a very big dierence. Another essential component is the pizza dough. With my background in pizza competi-tions, I have probably eaten at over a thousand pizza places, and their pizza dough is very high on my list for New York style pizza. e crust is easy to bite through, has great avor, and is chewy. e sauce is avorful with spices but not overpowering, and the mozzarella cheese was perfectly cooked. I know many people from the South usually get toppings on their pizza, but if you want to experience ‘a slice of New York.’ just order a cheese slice- I guarantee you will not be disappointed! One of my favorite pizzas on their menu is the Sicilian style pizza. For those of you that know Sicilian pizza, you appreciate it, because it can be dicult to nd. e process of making this dough is very labor intensive, requiring several proong stages that take four to ve hours to complete. e crust is placed into a rectangular pan and par-baked, resulting in a very light and airy crust. Trust me, you’ll be hooked. e Sicilian pizza is as authentic as it gets! Here, patrons can end their meal on a sweet note and indulge in their zeppoles, tiramisu or cheesecake. If you’re in or around Locust Grove don’t miss this amazing Italian gem! eir hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 8:30pm, and 12pm to 7:30 pm on Sundays. I ♥ New York Pizza, the real deal my friends!!Q&A with owner Matthew Sutton 1. When did Poppin Pizza open? March 13, 20202. How did you come up with the pizza pub and fireworks store concept? Pizza and Fireworks are the two industries that I have been involved. So, when I decided to start my own business, I figured it would make more since to have both entities together on the same property. The restaurant is oers year round revenue, whereas the fireworks store is a cash cow providing a supplemental seasonal revenue. 3. How long have you worked in the food and beverage industry?25 years6. Any other interesting facts you’d like to include? Not only did we open on Friday the 13th, but that was also race weekend, as well as the day that widespread shutdowns began due to COVID- 19. Including the cancellation of the races that weekend, which we were counting on for a big opening weekend. People say there is a lot to say about making it through that period as a brand new restaurant, and small business in general. 4. Do you live in Henry County? If so, how long? I have lived in Stockbridge since I was 4 years old so I’ve been here 37 years.5. What are your most popular menu items? Most popular menu items include: dynamite deluxe, meat blast, and poppin peperoni pizzas. Wings and meat sauce spaghetti are also very popular. The most popular sandwich is probably our steak Philly. Our sal-ads are quite popular as well.

Stockbridge: Tony’s at BrentwoodJerry BelcastroMy next pizza journey takes me to the northwestern part of the county to “Tony’s at Brentwood”. e proud owner of this restau-rant is Antonio Bortone, or more commonly known to his custom-ers, friends, and family as “Tony”. I consider this a true hidden gem. Tony’s is located at 1005 Brent-wood Parkway in Stockbridge. He oers various authentic Italian dishes, Neapolitan style, and New York style pizzas. Tony was born in Sassano, in the Salerno province in the Campa-nia region of south-western Italy. When Tony was 14, he and his family moved to Long Island, New York. is is where he learned the art of making pizza while also learning how to make homemade Italian dishes. e food he oers is a culmination of his roots in Italy, and his experience he obtained while cooking in pizza joints in and around Long Island. When I asked Tony what he wanted people to know about his establishment, he told me that everything he makes comes from his own recipes derived from his mother, his early cooking days, or from collabora-tive eorts from his sta through-out the years. One of my favorites on his menu is the spaghetti carbonara. Tony uses Guanciale, a delicious Italian-style bacon, and seasoned pepper, making this dish truly authentic. e key technique in nishing this pasta dish is blending the eggs with the parmesan cheese and then tossing it with the pasta and Guanciale. If you have never had this spaghetti carbonara, it is a must-try! Now, let’s move on to PIZZA!! One of Tony’s signature Neapoli-tan Pizzas is the Margherita. e dough of this pizza is made slightly dierent than the New York style dough. Tony uses a 00 our, which creates a dierent texture to the dough and allows for higher tem-peratures in the pizza oven. ese pizzas are cooked at 760 degrees. e crust on this pizza is perfect! It’s a mix of the density you’d expect in New York-style crust but is lighter and more airy. Adding to the avors of this pizza is the use of San Marzano tomatoes for the sauce. ese plum tomatoes are considered to be the best of the best and have a unique mellow sweetness to them. When it comes to his New York-style pizza, the crust is perfect….takes me right to Little Italy in New York! What sets Tony apart from most pizza and Italian restaurants is that he is from Italy. He prepares every-thing from scratch. is is one of a few places where I can condently say, you will not be disappointed with anything on the menu.Tony’s is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to10pm. McDonough: Crust & Craft Toye Wheeler e bustling McDonough Square has a nice variety of restau-rants to enjoy, and if you are in the mood for tasty, unique, thin-crust pizza and other Italian-American cuisine, Crust & Cra is a deli-cious option! I visit Crust & Cra oen. I’m drawn to their creative pizza avors and consistently high-quality food. Here, they pride themselves on “redening how Georgians enjoy pizza, beer, and cocktails,” and they do just that by oering unique and fun ways to dine for lunch, dinner, or late at night. With over 1,000 reviews and a 4.5-star rating on Google, it is easy to see why this pizzeria has its local customers returning for more. Patrons of all ages can dine at Crust & Cra indoors or outside, with additional bar seating in both spaces. Inside, you will nd a modern yet rustic atmosphere with pop music humming in the background and several televisions for all of the sports enthusiasts. is is a lively place to enjoy drinks and pizza with friends, or a family-friendly outing to enjoy a variety of tasty dishes. eir menu oers starters, such as golden fried calamari and deep-fried jalapeno poppers, and their lemon pepper wings are some of the best I’ve had in Henry County! However, the pizza is the star of the show at Crust & Cra! eir innovative brick-oven avors make their pies unique, including traditional favorites like the Mar-gherita and the Pepperoni Purist, along with artistic avors like the Philly Fry Pie, Korean BBQ, Charcut-A-Pie, and the Dynamite Shrimp combine for a scrump-tious, memorable, fun and unique pizzeria experience. eir Philly Fry Pie is the most delicious way to eat a Philly cheese-steak and fries!. e pizza is adorned with shaved steak, American and Swiss cheese, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, shoestring fries, and ranch dress-ing. Another favorite specialty pizza of mine is the Bualo Chick-en pizza; it’s topped with breaded chicken tossed in bualo sauce, mozzarella, green onions, and ranch dressing. When I’m here, I always order a salad and the Power Blend is my go-to as it is full of almonds, cranberries, and feta cheese tossed in Vidalia onion dressing. For a fun family dessert, the funnel cake fries topped with powdered sugar and chocolate sauce for dipping is a must try too. Connect with HENRYeatsHENRY EATShenryeats1iners’ ishd
