Hospitality Design Waitā Rooftop Bar - Sudima Hotel Auckland CBD As night falls, the blue haze of day lifts. This is when the curtains are pulled back on the windows to reveal the night sky above Aotearoa. The rooftop bar serves as a sanctuary where patrons can experience the enchantment of the night sky. Thoughtfully integrated elements reflecting the essence of Mātauranga Māori principles, Wairuatanga, and Te Whānau Mārama are woven into the design, incorporating an atmospheric colour theme, natural materials, tukutuku patterns, and ambient lighting to craft a serene atmosphere. This invites guests to connect with the deeper spiritual significance of Māori traditions and the stories they tell. The rooftop bar is divided into eight distinct zones. The first impression is the welcome area. Behind the welcome area is the seating lounge, a transitional space before seating. To the left of the seating lounge is the kitchen, separated from public view by a hallway. The bar is centrally located as the focal point of the space. In front of the lounge is the general dining area. Above the general dining area is the private function room, separated by a ceiling curtain. Beyond the dining area is the outdoor area.7|Page The name Waitā for the rooftop bar is inspired by the Matariki star associated with the ocean, reflecting its proximity to the New Zealand International Convention Centre and SkyCity. Office DesignBobux Office Design - New Market Auckland Bobux International, a design-led children’s shoewear brand, seeks to re-design their Newmarket office to enhance collaboration, staff interaction, and well-being in a post-COVID work environment. The project aims to align the office space with Bobux’s premium brand, addressing the current disconnect due to its cold and uninviting atmosphere. Key requirements include multifunctional spaces and improved acoustics, addressing the challenges of the existing concrete floors and ceilings with acoustic materials and design solutions. The design will feature 24 hot desks, expandability for up to 40 staff, private meeting rooms, collaborative areas, a design space, and updated amenities. To align with the brand’s values and identity, bold colour blocking and a range of different sustainable material finishings used cleverly throughout the workplace. The goal is to create a warm, tactile, and refined office environment that entices employees back and supports hybrid work styles.

The workspace, spanning 84.8 m², features hot-desks with sit-stand options, fostering a dynamic and ergonomic environment. The design includes dedicated areas for focused work, such as private meeting rooms with acoustic treatments and quiet booths for Teams calls, ensuring minimal distractions and privacy. The lunch space, design area, and small photography zone offer creative zones for collaborative projects and individual tasks, equipped with the necessary technology and storage. The outdoor space provides a refreshing retreat for breaks, promoting mental well-being and relaxation. The display/sales/presentation area and casual meeting spaces encourage team interaction and seamless hybrid meetings, vital for post-COVID operations. By addressing acoustic challenges with appropriate materials and maximizing natural light, the layout ensures a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.

The hotdesking area benefits from the morning sun, creating an invigorating workspace, while the catch-up/presentation area leverages the afternoon light with acoustic curtains ensuring a quiet and comfortable environment for meetings. Proper insulation, ventilation, and additional design elements like indoor plants further enhance the overall productivity and well-being of the office environment.The office design uses warm colours like reds and oranges to create an energetic and welcoming environment, balanced by neutral tones for a calm setting. Textured materials such as wood, fabric, and glass add depth, while geometric patterns bring visual interest and define areas. The meeting and presentation areas feature unique terrazzo pattern flooring, and the entrance has a sophisticated fluted glass door with a custom brass handle. This design aligns with Bobux’s brand by reflecting its vibrant personality, commitment to natural materials, and high-quality craftsmanship. Reflecting this, the layout of Xiang Wei is curved to create an impression of being immersed and wrapped around, with a soft flow that welcomes and envelops you in the space. The brand“Xiang Wei”, meaning fragrance or scents in English, creates perfumes that trigger memories and educates on perfume making, envisioning that everyone can be their own perfumer. In an age where traditional retail is under threat from online retailers, Xiang Wei focuses on three main elements: Immersive, Service, and Interactive. The store creates an immersive, serene environment with a curved design that makes visitors feel part of the space. It offers mini perfume workshops to explore the fun of perfume making, enhancing customer engagement and education. 24|Page

This includes using materials, colours, and textures that evoke natural landscapes, such as forests, to create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere that feels connected to nature. The ends of each counter are clad in ribbed timber linings that recall the texture of tree bark. Lighting has been designed to play off these ribbed timbers, creating a play of light and shadow. The greyed-off green colour evokes memories of forest canopies and driving through lush green fields. Layered organic bulkhead ceilings produce a pleasing visual complement to the curved walls and displays, spontaneously guiding customers from the store entrance further into the store.MooqwMood Board

Upon entering, customers are greeted by a decompression zone for a smooth transition. The window display attracts passersby, while the sale counter ensures efficient transactions. A dedicated fragrance lab supports the brand’s vision of educating customers to become their own perfumers. Staff areas, including a manager’s room, kitchen, and accessible toilets, provide a functional workspace, while adequate storage keeps the retail area uncluttered.

32|Page Passive DesignXiang Wei Perfume Shop - Parnell Auckland The retail shop’s site located at the lower end of Parnell Road, two kilometres from the central city, has an uneven passive light distribution and passive/active ventilation between the two floors of the building. The passive light gain is more concentrated on the second floor provided by the window glazing and skylights but cannot be distributed to the first floor. There is also a lack of passive/active ventilation on the first floor. To maximise natural light into the building I have proposed a sawtooth roof. This type of roof intends to harness daylight and solar gain within a building.

34|Page Furniture Design M Modular System The design aims to create an innovative piece of multi-purpose furniture for a flexible, open-plan workplace office. Addressing the evolving dynamics of work influenced by the global pandemic, this furniture prioritizes human health and well-being, catering to employees who split their time between home and office for collaborative team gatherings and meetings. Suitable for open-plan areas, the design tackles seating and acoustic issues while being mobile and reconfigurable. Inspired by New Zealand’s unique culture and breathtaking landscape, the design incorporates biophilic elements to enhance interior environments and reflect the distinctive Kiwi way of life.

My initial concept for the meeting pod was inspired by the “Cardboard Cathedral” in Christchurch, designed by Shigeru Ban. The temporary structures he built were mostly flat-packed and easy for people to installI also further explored different types of cardboard interlocking.In the early development of the product, I wanted to provide the flexibility of a modular setting system for workers so that they could alter the setup based on their needs.35|Page

36|Page The design integrates biophilic principles, sustainability, and material life cycle considerations, utilizing reindeer moss, plywood, and acoustic absorbers made from recycled PET bottles. Acoustic reindeer moss has addressed one element of biophilic design to its surrounding, increase productivity, creativity and well-being of workers.

37|Page In further product development, the material choice shifted from honeycomb cardboard to plywood to better address acoustic issues. Additional solutions include acoustic absorber panels between the wall and ceiling cavity, acoustic carpet vinyl, acoustic moss panels, and acoustic double-glazing for doors and windows. These modifications effectively block external noise transfer and absorb sounds produced within the pod. Combining modern Western framing with traditional Japanese ‘basic tusk tenon’ wood joinery, the pod is easy to assemble and disassemble. The modular system’s silhouette draws inspiration from New Zealand’s mountainscape, blending natural beauty with functional design.

Lighting and plumbing fixtures selections were made to complement these interior colour themes.Demeter features a creamy white with a subtle green undertone, earthy browns, and greige, with accents of deep forest green and brushed brass. This theme evokes a sense of peace and connection to nature, perfect for creating restful and rejuvenating living spaces.In contrast, Gaia embraces crisp whites, sandy taupes, and cool greys, accented with soft beige and brushed nickel. Inspired by the simplicity and minimalism of natural elements, Gaia brings an earthy and calming feel to the interiors, fostering a sense of groundedness and tranquillity. Both themes were meticulously crafted to reflect the location’s natural beauty and tranquillity, providing residents with a harmonious and calming living environment.
