Please give a brief description of your day-to-day role:I started my apprenticeship in September as a complete beginner, so I’m currently learning the programming languages needed for my role, following some online courses on top of my learning at college. I am in the process of creating a Poker Planning app using React, so the bulk of my day is spent programming that. I also sit in on project meetings, witnessing how the team works together over the course of the project. I was able to use this knowledge at college, where I am leading a web development project for St Wulfram’s Church in Grantham. I host my own meetings with my classmates, teaching them what I’ve learnt at work as well as planning the next steps. My colleagues and tutors support me and give me advice on leadership, communication and organisation skills based on their experiences. Why did you choose the apprenticeship route?I was drawn to the apprenticeship route because they are a great combination of the workplace and education. I’m able to learn industry practices from people in the role I wish to have in the future as well as earn the qualification I need to continue in the software environment. I feel secure knowing that at the end of my apprenticeship, I will have both industry experience and a qualification which can help me to expand my career. What would you say to encourage someone to consider an apprenticeship? My apprenticeship feels liberating; my learning is up to me. I have to have the motivation and discipline to both teach and improve myself, so I can progress. It’s not like school where the information is thrown at you; you must seek it out and take initiative. And I know that if I ever need help, I am surrounded by supportive, capable people who want to see me succeed, both at work and at college. What would you say to encourage someoneto consider an apprenticeship?I highly recommend the apprenticeship route. You’re able to get a head-start in the industry you dream of, learning skills and gaining experience you can’t get in the classroom while being supported by professionals. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you want to do - there is an apprenticeship for everyone.ElleBarnabyYour job title:Software ApprenticeYour apprenticeship title:Software Developer Higher Apprenticeship Standard Level 4Qualification and training provider:Grantham CollegeStart and finish dates of apprenticeship:11/09/2024 – 11/12/2026Organisation website:www.srcuk.com

ASI Military & Civil Award sponsored by the RAFWINNER“I was nominated out of 200 students because of my passion, dedication and care for others. I constantly pushed myself to try new things, to reach my goals and to get outside my comfort zone. I always wanted to help out and get involved, especially with employers, and that attitude helped me get my current apprenticeship. I also supported and encouraged my classmates with their studies, acting as a mentor/big sister figure. I helped them if they were stuck in lesson, but also assisted them in applying for apprenticeships, hyping them up and giving them the confidence to apply.”

My role mainly focuses on the financial services side of the business. My role includes sales and purchase ledger processing, month end tasks (such as pre-payments, fixed asset accounting and month end journals) and financial advisor commission calculations and payments. My role has changed and diversified as time has gone on and my natural progression has been guided by the yearly expansion of the business. Why did you choose the apprenticeship route? After leaving sixth form mid pandemic I was certain University wasn’t the best route for me so began to look into alternate study methods and came across apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships. At the time I was working in a high street letting agents that was corporately so I enquired about any apprenticeships or even traineeships that would possible becoming available. Shortly after I was oered an interview for a roving business role. Upon interviewing I expressed my interest in the finance sector and was then oered my current role. What would you say to encourage someone to consider an apprenticeship?I would encourage anyone who is currently sat on the fence with regards to apprenticeships to dive in the deep end and take a leap. It’s an excellent entry to any industry and allows for a great work, life, study balance. Not only have I worked towards three professional qualifications in the last 4 years but I have also gained invaluable work experience with some of the UK’s leading talents in the property industry and received bespoke training from my company for person development. What would you say to encourage someone to consider an apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is a great way to get in to the world of work, giving you key skills such as communication, self-confidence and accountability whilst learning the varying aspects of whichever line of work you are in. It is also a good opportunity to ‘earn whilst you learn’ as opposed to gaining debt through going to university.
