Take a deep breath and plunge down into the dark murky depths as we seek to explore the unexplained, from the medieval mind to modern-day mysteries of the ocean. Fascinating analysis of ‘monster’ sightings, fake news and conspiracy theories sit alongside the history of deep-sea exploration and beyond, highlighting incredible discoveries and advances in our understanding of the oceans. From a terrifying Feegee mermaid, to the spindly legs of a giant Japanese spider crab, there are lots of strange and wonderful things to see in Monsters of the Deep. From the Archive: Aberdeen Harbour Continues until 11 Jan 2026 Art Gallery (Gallery 2) / free Explore images from the archive of the Port of Aberdeen that bear witness to the technological changes that have taken place on the quayside over the past 100 years. Reading Between the Lines: Embroidered Samplers Continues until 15 Feb 2026 Art Gallery (Gallery 3) / free These samplers from our collection provide insights into the lives of the girls who sewed them and the social, political and religious environment in which they lived in the 1700s and 1800s. Spotlight display: New Acquisitions Continues until 28 Sep Art Gallery (Gallery 19) / free This small display features new acquisitions with a maritime theme, to celebrate the Tall Ships Races weighing anchor in Aberdeen from 19 to 22 July. EXHIBITIONS & DISPLAYS Divers and support crew, Aberdeen harbour, around 1912 © Port of Aberdeen Tales of the Tall Ships Maritime Museum / free This exhibition of paintings, ship models and photography highlights some of Aberdeen’s historic and cultural ties to these iconic sailing vessels, from shipyard construction to racing and competition. Ship Shapes Opening 14 Jun Maritime Museum / free Ships come in many different shapes and sizes – but can you tell a tanker from a tug, or a brig from a barque? EXHIBITIONS & DISPLAYS All Fired Up New! Now open Art Gallery (Level 2) / free Explore the art and science of ceramics in this interactive display of over 180 ceramic items by artist-potters. They are part of the Sandy Dunbar studio pottery collection, a gift from the family of the late Alexander Arbuthnott Dunbar (1929-2012), which has been made on the understanding that each piece can be handled by visitors. Come and see, and feel, this remarkable collection of, in Sandy’s words, “pots that sing” – designs that were pleasing to his eye, felt good in his hands and brought him joy. Listen to curator Morna Annandale talking about some of the pots in our free digital audio guide on the Bloomberg Connects app. Exhibition supported by bp John Forbes’ Songs and Fancies 13 Sep–4 Jan 2026 Art Gallery (Gallery 15) / free The National Library of Scotland’s centenary celebrations see selected treasures from their collections go on display at venues around Scotland, including the Art Gallery. John Forbes’ Songs and Fancies, published in Aberdeen in 1682, is an early secular music book which would have been an important guide to students of music at the time. This loan also coincides with the centenary of our concert venue the Cowdray Hall. Kipper the Sea Dragon comes to the rescue but he can’t do it alone. He enlists the help of a family of sea horses, a star fish and a very naughty crab to search the sea for colours to help put the coral reef back together. Come along and be part of the action – make a noise with percussion and use the props to help Kipper save the day. Family fun: An experiment in art Wed 16 Jul / 10:30–12:30 Art Gallery, Learning Space Free, drop-in For primary aged children Must be accompanied by an adult Come along and make shadows with a torch, observe symmetry in paper cutting and create a pattern that constantly repeats. Explore the shells found on our local beaches and discover some impressive examples of shells from around the world. Macduff Aquarium: Ocean plastics Tue 5 Aug / 10:30–12:00 / 14:00–15:30 Maritime Museum £8 for 1 child + 1 adult For children age 8+ Plastics don’t decompose but get broken down into smaller and smaller particles called microplastics which are a threat to marine life. Become a Citizen Scientist and take part in a hands-on experiment to extract and identify microplastics using simple filtration and handheld microscopes. 9

Using a variety of three-dimensional hand embroidery techniques you will create a stunning underwater scene. Supported by Friends of Aberdeen Archives, Gallery & Museums Workshop: Scrimshaw printing Sat 30 Aug / 14:00–16:00 Maritime Museum £22 / £18 Create striking black and white prints inspired by the intricate art of scrimshaw. This was a common pastime for whalers during long voyages, who would engrave detailed images onto whale bones and teeth. Artist Lisa Gribbon will guide you through monoprinting and embossing techniques, enriching your images with textures and distinctive marks. WORKSHOPS Under the sea embroidery 18
