A call to action for every R I school Put the student first By Dennis Littky June14 2023 Rhode Island can move the needle when it comes to educating our kids and adults We can innovate here and the impact can be felt across the country and beyond We have a homegrown education success story that delivers outstanding student outcomes has expanded regionally nationally and internationally now serving 20 000 students Elliot Washor and I opened the Met School in 1996 after incubating it at Big Picture Learning with 51 students and a radical proposition to educate one student at a time embed their learning in the realworld and deeply engage their families and the community At the Met School now we serve all of Rhode Island with 820 students in Providence and Newport And there are 111 Met like schools in the United States and 110 more throughout the world from India to Kenya with 36 in Australia The Met has grown because it works 78 percent of Rhode Island s Met students graduate college and career ready compared to the urban high school average of 34 percent and the state overall average of just 37 percent It s noteworthy that the Met is more well known around the world than in Providence The 800 visitors we attract per year and the Met s continued expansion globally tell you something I m stepping down as co director of the Met after 27 amazing years gratified by its consistent performance and its trajectory It shows what s possible and what we need more of The Met is in great hands with Nancy Diaz continuing as director she has served capably as co director for 18 years and relentlessly refines and improves our program The need for the MET is acute even here in Rhode Island there are 900 students on the waitlist We ve preserved the same fundamental model we developed and refined at the Met and applied to adult learners at College Unbound Rhode Island s 13th accredited college which I co founded in 2009 with Adam Bush In a nutshell students learn when they are motivated when they are interested and when they are supported You ll see the same structures at work too small cohorts great relationships student driven projects exhibitions College Unbound s student outcomes are likewise off the charts and we ve already expanded to Philadelphia Camden New Jersey and Chicago with more cities in the pipeline As with the Met deep engagement in the communities has been critical This kind of education helps students transform themselves their families and their communities My call to action is for every school K 16 to put the student first Build a curriculum around the student Our mantra one student at a time works for kindergarteners and 38 year olds Let s remove the barriers and get to work Dennis Littky is the co founder of The Met School Big Picture Learning and College Unbound

Nicholas Emsley has a strong interest in I.T. and computer science. At the Met, he explored his passion through internships and projects. Starting with learning computer building, he progressed to programming and quality assurance work at a local tech start-up. Notable internships include Personal Computing, Inc. and Siren Marine, where he worked on wireless boat monitoring systems. His standout project involved building a test board for efficient device testing. Nicholas earned certifications and took College Success at CCRI. He plans to attend CCRI for Computer Studies while continuing to work at Siren Marine. Daniel Hammond takes pride in completing his CCRI classes. His best internship experience was at RIBA, where Daniel learned how to make a shed and enjoyed the people he met. At the internship, he worked on measurements, angles, communication with mentors, and collaboration. While at the Met, Daniel focused on developing his independence and work ethic and pursuing his interest in crime. He earned certifications in OSHA 10 and Red Bike. At CCRI, he took Criminalistics 1 and College Success. Daniel's post-Met plan is to attend RIC.Javontae Ruspus has actively pursued his passion through various culinary experiences at Met. He completed ServSafe certifications, interned at the Elmwood Nursing Home’s kitchen and worked at the Grandview Restaurant. Javontae takes pride in his exhibitions and autobiography, influencing his self-expression and perspective. His internship at Elmwood Nursing Home was particularly impactful, where he developed culinary skills and learned about food safety. Javontae holds certifications in ServSafe food handlers, RedShed, and CPR. His post-Met plan involves attending CCRI and transferring to JWU to further his culinary education. Julia Masri has been exploring her passions at Met through internships and college classes. She has actively pursued knowledge in different career options to broaden her horizons. Julia's Senior Thesis Project focused on climate change and recycling, showcases her dedication to environmental causes. She plans to attend Suffolk University.Nicole Giraldo actively sought engineering and STEM-related internships. Her senior thesis project focused on raising awareness about STEM fields, reflecting her dedication to the subject. She has earned an OSHA certification and has taken college classes such as College Success, Intro to Machinery Handbook, and Blueprint Reading. Nicole's post-Met plan is to major in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Pharmaceuticals at JWU (Johnson & Wales University).

Skander Miley actively pursued their interest throughout their three years at the Met. Skander's best internship experience involved a coding and cybersecurity course, where they developed a Python program for lunch order price calculation. Along the way, Skander acquired valuable skills in empirical and quantitative reasoning, computer science, math, communication, teamwork, social reasoning, online safety, time management, and public speaking. Post-Met, Skander plans to embark on a journey of exploration, traveling the world to further their knowledge and understanding of astrophysics.Gabby Brown has a profound interest in social justice and their commitment to these causes is evident through internships with a lawyer and a non-profit organization focused on educational equity. Their senior project, which involved researching food security and cultural sovereignty, is a testament to their dedication. Gabby's plans involve attending Williams College as an anthropology major on a pre-law track, intending to work in civil and labor rights after completing their legal education. Tehya Faraone has a strong interest in architecture and civil engineering. Throughout her four years at the Met, Tehya has pursued her passion through internships and hands-on experiences. From learning about power tools and AutoCAD in her early years to securing an internship at DiMauro Architects, where she designed an environmentally friendly greenhouse using recycled windows, Tehya's dedication is evident. Her current internship at 2Hands Studio allows her to expand her knowledge of architecture and explore interior design. Tehya's senior project, focused on designing and constructing the greenhouse, is a testament to her commitment and desire to contribute to the design process. Tehya's internships include DiMauro Architects and 2Hands Studio and she earned an Autodesk Inventor Certification. Tehya's post-Met plan involves attending CCRI and pursuing engineering at URI.Madeline Viveiros explored various art forms during her time at the Met. From working with vinyl for signs and t-shirts to learning sewing from a master sewist, Madeline has embraced diverse artistic experiences. Her internships at an art gallery and a tattoo shop have further enriched her skills and knowledge. Noteworthy achievements include designing a pair of pants from scratch and attending her sewing internship diligently, even during limited in-person sessions. Madeline's standout internships include Sew Nice Fabrics, Out of the Box Art Gallery, and Troubled Soul Tattoo. She holds certifications in bloodborne pathogens (for tattooing) and ServSafe Alcohol. Madeline's college class experience includes Introduction to Theater. Her post-Met plan involves attending Rhode Island College to continue her artistic journey.

Az Willis is dedicated to promoting mental health and youth wellness. Az's involvement with the Newport Prevention Coalition and leadership in student projects exemplify their commitment to this cause. Their standout internship experiences have been with the Newport Prevention Coalition, and organizing a Friendsgiving event for LGBTQ youth holds a special place in their heart. Az has taken college classes in Sociology, Psychology, Ethics, and Business, as well as Film and Chinese History. Their post-Met plan involves pursuing a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology to become a therapist. Evan Mello has a strong interest in the United States Coast Guard. Evan's pursuit of this passion led them to internships in the maritime industry, including experiences at the Norman Bird Sanctuary and the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry. With a post-Met plan focused on joining the Coast Guard, Evan is poised to embark on a meaningful career in service.Nate Powers is passionate about music production and audio engineering. He actively pursued his interests through internships and mentorship. Nate's journey has been shaped by his involvement with the Boys and Girls Club music studio, where he worked closely with mentor Marlin DaCruz. Notable accomplishments include completing a Boys and Girls Club National Conference show and producing recorded music. Looking ahead, Nate plans to enroll in a four-year music education program while continuing to release his music.Sabrina Rabidoux has a strong interest in the arts and women's studies. Throughout her time at the Met, Sabrina actively pursued these passions through internships, art classes, and personal growth. Notable experiences include an internship with Mindkey, an online magazine, where she gained valuable organizational and directive-following skills while working on the newsletter. Sabrina's post-Met plan involves studying Digital Media at Rhode Island College. Karen Chevez has a passion for business. She has pursued her interest by taking business management classes and securing a job at a bakery. Karen’s experience at Just Like Nana's bakery was valuable; she even worked on her business project. Her post-Met plan is to enter the workforce and apply her business skills.

Jackson Deter has a strong interest in artistic fabrication and mechatronic engineering. He has worked on this interest at the Met through his pursued internships, which have equipped him with a diverse skill set applicable to both industries. Jackson takes pride in his personal growth over the four years, particularly in learning to ask for help and setting realistic expectations for himself. His best internship experiences were at SENESCO Marine and Design Make Manufacture. His standout internship project was designing and constructing a park bench, a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. Jackson has earned certifications as an Autodesk Inventor certified user and OSHA-10 general industry health and safety (manufacturing). His post-Met plan is to enter the workforce immediately and gain real-life experience, preferably at either SENESCO Marine or Boston Dynamics.

Samantha Urena has a passion for business and has been actively involved in her STP Project, which utilizes art to aid individuals in coping with grief and mental health challenges. Her internship at Southside Elementary School allowed her to connect with children and assist the P.E. teacher. Teaching students about self-defense was a notable project during her internship. Samantha has earned certifications and completed College Success at CCRI. Her post-Met plan involves attending CCRI for two years and then transferring to RIC or a college in Florida. Silvana Nunez is passionate about the medical field, particularly pediatrics. She took a Certified Nursing Assistant course, obtained her license, and currently works as a CNA, which she finds rewarding. She holds certifications as a certified nursing assistant and in CPR. At the college level, Silvana has taken courses in college success, world literature, and general sociology. Her post-Met plan is to attend Rhode Island College for a bachelor's degree in Biology and pursue medical school to fulfill her dream of becoming a pediatric doctor.Tatiana Lugo has consistently practiced and honed her skills in cosmetology. She even offered free makeup services to ladies on their prom nights. In her senior year, she interned at Crops Barber and Beauty in South Kingstown, where she gained valuable knowledge and experience in hair styling and coloring. Her best internships were at Crops Barber and Beauty and Grixys Grooming during her freshman year when she was passionate about working with animals. Tatiana has earned a certification in ServSafe Alcohol. In terms of college classes, she has taken College Success. Her post-Met plan is to attend CCRI for two years and then transfer to RIC to pursue a bachelor's degree in social work. Zeniya Snead is enthusiastic about entrepreneurship. Starting in 11th grade, she explored business management to gain experience in owning a business. Zeniya takes pride in her crochet business and teaching others this skill. Her best internship was at the South Providence Library, where she created crochet baskets for people to enjoy for free. Zeniya holds a ServSafe certification and has taken a College Success class at CCRI. Her post-Met plan is to study accounting at CCRI. Zeniya's dedication and practical experiences position her for success in her entrepreneurial pursuits.

Catherine Lugo embarked on various medical internships that solidified her aspirations, ultimately leading her to enroll in a Certified Nursing Assistant course and secure a job at a nursing home. Catherine takes immense pride in completing the CNA course, considering it just the beginning of her medical career. In her final year at the Met, Catherine sought a challenging experience to propel her towards her future goals. With her advisor's encouragement, she joined the Ocean Classroom, a two-month technology-free sailing voyage. This transformative journey allowed her to disconnect from the internet, focus on interpersonal connections, and grow as a student and an individual. Catherine's favorite internships occurred alongside nurses at Landmark Medical Center's occupational health office and Achievement First. Working with her mentor, nurse Rose, at Achievement First solidified her desire to pursue nursing as a career. In contrast, her mentor Tricia at Landmark Medical Center pushed her beyond her comfort zone. Her most significant internship project involved conducting research on vital signs and exploring the topic of polio. Catherine's certifications include RI Early Learning and Development Standards (RIELDS) and a Nursing Assistant certification through American Safety (CNA). Catherine's post-Met plan involves attending Rhode Island College to pursue a nursing major, further advancing her healthcare career. Christopher Robinson has actively pursued his physical therapy and sports training interests. Through internships, he gained valuable experience with a college basketball coach and at Bay State Physical Therapy. Christopher's Senior Thesis Project involved hosting a basketball tournament to educate students about fitness, stretching, and injury prevention. He plans to continue this project after graduating, aiming to impact the youth in his community positively. Christopher's post-Met plan includes attending the Community College of Rhode Island to begin working toward a bachelor's degree in kinesiology.

Daisha Jackson explored her business, psychology, and mental health interests through internships at the E Center, WestBay RI, and SouthSide Elementary. During these experiences, she actively engaged with individuals with disabilities, researched diagnoses, and taught mindfulness techniques to children. Her impactful Senior Thesis Project involved a mission trip to Guatemala, where she shared resources, taught yoga, and contributed to community development and hospital assistance. Throughout her internships and Met experience, Daisha developed strong communication skills, social reasoning, and soft skills such as empathy, time management, and leadership. She pursued her learning goals, boosting her confidence, improving her work ethic, and exploring career paths through informational interviews. Daisha has also earned certifications in CPR, basic first aid, and fire life and safety. Her post-Met plan includes studying abroad in Costa Rica and majoring in psychology and business management at New Haven University. Daisha's inspiring journey showcases the power of self-belief, resilience, and the pursuit of interests. Dallana Arriaza took pride in planning and organizing successful events like the "Multi-Cultural Event" and the "Holiday Movie," showcasing her skills in event management and creating engaging experiences for the school community. Dallana's best internship experience was at Southside Elementary, where she found a supportive and inspiring mentor who pushed her to reach her full potential. Her Senior Thesis Project focused on organizing a Southside to Met tour, aiming to educate the Southside students about the Met and raising funds through a raffle to benefit them. After graduating from the Met, Dallana plans to attend Rhode Island College and major in Early Childhood Education, furthering her commitment to the field of education.Kevin Woods’ most rewarding internship experience was at GroundworksRI, where he gained valuable skills and worked alongside a supportive team. His senior project, a successful campus-wide chess tournament, showcased his commitment to his passion. Kevin holds certifications in ServSafe Food Handler, OSHA 10, and OSHA 40. Following graduation, he plans to join City Year while continuing his work at Groundwork RI, focusing on compost projects.

Jefferson Fuentes is dedicated to exploring the intersection of technology and art and has actively pursued his interests at the Met. He completed a Drawing 1 class at CCRI and secured an internship with the I.T. department at the University of Rhode Island (URI). Jefferson's notable achievements include participating in a two-month Semester at Sea program and a mission trip to Guatemala. He considers his internships at URI and the Rhode Island Builders Association (RIBA) some of his most valuable experiences. During these internships, Jefferson worked on projects such as creating a 3D model room using Unity and integrating an interactive whiteboard. He holds certifications from the National Retail Federation Foundation and OSHA 10. After graduating from the Met, Jefferson plans to study Liberal Arts with a STEM focus at Southern New Hampshire University, showcasing his commitment to personal and professional growth.Joel Rodriguez has actively pursued opportunities in voice acting during his time at the Met. Joel's Senior Thesis Project involved organizing his Open Mic event with participant sign-ups and snack sales, which attendees enthusiastically received. His internship on the Oliver Hazard Perry tall ship was a standout experience. Working alongside a supportive captain and crewmates, Joel completed various tasks, including sanding and painting bottle screws to enhance the ship's functionality and appearance. He has earned a ServSafe Certified Food Handler certification and completed College Success at CCRI. Joel's post-Met plan is to attend CCRI to pursue acting and voiceover acting, reflecting his dedication to voice acting and his proactive nature in event organization. His internship with the Oliver Hazard Perry further enriched his hands-on experience. Mocorah Lewis actively pursued her interest in social justice and law at the Met. As President of her school's student government, Mocorah developed invaluable leadership skills. She initiated "the Met Chapter" at her school, establishing a safe space for students to discuss social issues and form clubs. Mocorah's internships at the Providence Student Union and The Rhode Island Center for Justice played a pivotal role in introducing her to social justice work and empowering her as a youth advocate. She spearheaded the Denim Day Week of Action to raise awareness about sexual violence and support survivors. Throughout her internships, Mocorah engaged in tasks such as researching statistics, networking, advocating for bills, and learning from past activists. She has taken college classes at the Community College of Rhode Island and Spelman College, focusing on subjects related to law, criminalistics, and art history. Mocorah's post-Met plan is to attend Spelman College, majoring in sociology with a concentration in pre-law.

Sydney Collins actively pursued her interest in marine biology at the Met. She secured an internship on the Oliver Hazard Perry tall ship, immersing herself in the world of marine science. Additionally, she pursued another opportunity at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography, expanding her knowledge of marine invertebrates. Sydney's senior thesis project emphasized the importance of lifelong literacy, leading her to organize a free book fair for families in the Providence/South Providence community. Her internships at the Oliver Hazard Perry and the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography were instrumental in her exploration of marine biology. Notably, she researched women in the maritime industry, shedding light on the challenges women face pursuing careers in this male-dominated field. Sydney holds certifications in Rhode Island Early Learning Development Standards and ServSafe. She has taken the Introduction to Health and Human Services college class. Her post-Met plan is to attend UMass Dartmouth, majoring in Marine Biology. Teo Janiga has actively pursued his marketing, graphic design, and communications interests at the Met. Through the E360 program, he developed public speaking and networking skills, which proved valuable in finding internships aligned with his interests. Notably, Teo participated in the PVD Young Makers paid internship program, adapting to the remote environment during the pandemic. He designed an instructional course on using the library's 4k action cameras, creating a comprehensive 25-page instruction packet that continues to be used. Teo's most significant internship experience was at SouthSide Elementary, where he interned with a 5th-grade teacher, gaining firsthand experience in public education. He observed lesson planning, student behavior management techniques, and the importance of social-emotional learning in the classroom. In 11th grade, Teo interned at Solid State Co., a local designer, and fabricator, contributing to custom design projects and developing a wooden bat house project for the community's benefit. He holds certifications in AutoDesk Inventor, Accounting 1 and 2, Computer Science Essentials, and Adobe Illustrator. Teo has taken college classes in Foundations of Education, Intro to Helping and Humans Services, College Success, Workplace Relationships, Personal Finance, Psychology of Personal Adjustment, and Graphic Design I. After graduating from the Met, Teo plans to attend Fordham University in NYC, majoring in global marketing and consumer insights with a minor in visual arts and a concentration in graphic design.

Yangtse Valdera has pursued her interest in law and criminal justice through internships and coursework. She gained hands-on experience at The Cranston Municipal Court, witnessing courtroom operations and law practice. Her standout project involved researching careers in law and criminal justice, creating a rubric to identify the top matches, and presenting a mock crime scene investigation at her 11.2 exhibition. Yangtse holds certifications in RIELDS, NRFF, ServSafe Food, and ServSafe Alcohol. She has taken college classes in various subjects. After the Met, she plans to attend Rhode Island College for her first two years, explore different interests, and later transfer to a larger university to complete a bachelor's degree. Her ultimate goal is to become a lawyer. Angel Feliz has actively pursued computer science during his time at the Met. He demonstrated leadership within the Justice community by organizing building-wide intramural tournaments to combat social isolation. One of his memorable internship experiences was at the University of Rhode Island, where he repaired computers and engaged with students while experiencing the computer science industry firsthand. Angel also initiated the UpBeet program, promoting healthy eating among high school students through presentations, activities, and nutritious meals. Angel holds certifications in Servsafe Alcohol and AutoDesk Inventor. He has attended conferences, taken college classes in various subjects, and received awards for his accomplishments. Angel plans to attend Clemson University to further his education and pursue his interests. Denilson Lopez focused on studying beat-making techniques to enhance the richness and complexity of his songs. He spends his free time practicing the piano to incorporate melodies into his beats, adding depth to his compositions. Denilson’s best internship experience was at Music One, where he had the opportunity to collaborate with other musicians and learn valuable skills to further his music production abilities. Recently, he enjoyed creating beats for a mockumentary student film, embracing the creative and unconventional aspects of the project. Denilson holds a Safeserv certification for serving alcohol. In terms of college classes, he has taken Recording Studio and Foundation of Music courses. Denilson's post-Met plan involves attending CCRI for two years before transferring to either Roger Williams or Assumption University to continue his education.

Jalisa Ramos, a metalsmithing enthusiast, has nurtured her love for the craft at the Met. Her journey began with a two-week blacksmithing class at the Steelyard during the summer before her sophomore year, which provided her with valuable foundational skills. Since then, Jalisa has explored various disciplines, including woodworking, carpentry, and welding, through internships and hands-on experiences. One of Jalisa's proudest achievements is her participation in the Ocean Classroom program, where she embarked on a semester at sea aboard the Harvey Gamage vessel. Despite being outside her comfort zone, Jalisa embraced the new challenges and unfamiliar surroundings, persevering through difficult days and shaping the experience to meet her goals. Among her internships, Jalisa found Edge & End the most enjoyable. Working with woodworking, she discovered a newfound love for the craft and relished the daily tasks and continuous learning opportunities. At Edge & End, she created a wall shelf with offset shelves, showcasing her creativity and craftsmanship. Additionally, during her internship at Senesco Marine, Jalisa worked with metal, constructing a small table—an accomplishment she takes pride in. Jalisa has earned certifications in OSHA 10 General and OSHA 10 Construction, demonstrating her commitment to workplace safety.

Shumir Woods has evolved his passions over the past four years, aspiring to become a teacher or social worker. He actively pursued this goal outside of school by working with children at the West End rec and mentoring 9th graders at the Met. Shumir takes pride in his personal growth and credits the Met for shaping him into a better young black man. His internship was at Rhode Island College, where he collaborated with the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society, deepening his knowledge of black history. He worked on a project to build a museum showcasing Rhode Island's black heritage and plans to share his research on African-American education with Met advisories. Shumir completed certifications and college classes and intends to major in sociology at UMass Dartmouth, where he will continue his athletic career. The welcoming environment and connection to Rhode Island athletes attracted him to the university.Daisy Soto's passion for medicine was nurtured during her time at Justice, where she pursued various opportunities to develop her skills and knowledge. She took a science college class, earned certifications, and enrolled in online courses to enhance her academic profile. One of her notable achievements was volunteering with a non-profit organization for her Senior Thesis Project, where she learned about reforestation and its role in addressing climate change. Her best internship experience took place at Providence Community Health Center, where she engaged in communication with patients and internship discussions and maintained effective contact with her patients. Motivated and committed to her learning goals, Daisy completed tasks such as RWL Blogs, research essays, and internships by setting high standards and managing her time effectively. She earned certifications in Pre-Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, and U.S. History while completing college courses in English Literature, Poetry, and Organismal Biology. For her post-Met plan, Daisy will attend Boston University, majoring in Biology on a pre-med track, to further pursue her passion for medicine.

Mohamed Ali Darradji has pursued his passion for marine biology since his 9th-grade year. He has engaged in various activities to develop his understanding of the field, including internships at aquarium stores, hands-on experiences on the Oliver Hazard Perry, college classes, summer programs, lectures, and teaching a class on marine biology in Liberty. Mohamed also volunteered with the Roger Williams Park Zoo Play Partners program to learn about animals. One of his proudest accomplishments is completing the challenging nine-week Ocean Classroom program. His best internship experience was also during the Ocean Classroom program, where he gained practical skills such as navigation using GPS and celestial techniques, weather recording, sail handling, and ship steering. Dallalee Pena enrolled in a Penn Foster course to obtain a veterinary assistant certificate and conducted interviews with animal hospitals to gain valuable insights. Dallalee's internships included working at A Dog's Life and participating in the E360 course, where she acquired practical experience and learned about entrepreneurship. One notable project during her internship involved the creation of personalized dog tags based on behavior. Moreover, Dallalee has earned certifications in various areas and intends to pursue a Biology degree at Rhode Island College for her post-Met education. Elias G. Perez Santana concentrated on nursing during their tenure at the Met. They actively participated in Nursing Home LTI's, Hospital LTI's, and a CNA program to develop their nursing skills. One notable achievement they are proud of is conducting workshops on CNA skills for underclassmen as part of the STP program. Elias has interned at RI Hospital, St. Anne's Hospital, and Capitol Ridge Nursing Home. They have obtained certifications as Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and Servsafe Food Handlers. Regarding college classes, Elias has taken General Psychology and Psychology of Personal Adjustment at CCRI and Health and Nutrition at RWU. Elias plans to pursue nursing at the University of Rhode Island after completing their studies at the Met. Esmeralda Bautista has dedicated herself to pursuing her interest in nursing during her time at the Met. He gained hands-on experience in welding at Senesco and developed his math and measurement skills at the Rhode Island Builders Association. At Edge and End, Renaldo learned about tool safety, wood types, and the business aspects of production. Notably, he completed a blueprint reading class at CCRI, which was valuable in his Senesco Marine internship. Renaldo's most rewarding internships were at Senesco Marine shipyard, Edge and End, and the Rhode Island Builders Association (RIBA). One notable project involved deconstructing and building a new shed with RIBA, where he applied his math skills in a practical setting. He holds certifications such as OSHA 10, Six Sigma White Belt, Six Sigma Yellow Belt, and RIBA Completion. Her best internships include working as a teaching assistant at an elementary school and gaining experience as a security guard. During her internships, Chelsea engaged in various tasks that honed her skills. She analyzed social media posts and follower engagement to enhance her empirical and quantitative reasoning abilities. Chelsea also developed social reasoning skills by studying the history of women in Guatemala and their pursuit of equal rights. Ashley Rodriguez, a student at Unity building, is deeply passionate about culinary arts. She pursued her interest at the Met by starting with an LTI in the Met Kitchen, where she learned cooking basics and essential skills from a JWU Alumni mentor. Ashley then had a summer opportunity at Sarcastic Sweets, where she gained knowledge in baking and was promoted to a supervisor role. This experience led to more opportunities, including food truck events, catering events, food tastings, and food competitions. She recently interned and was hired at the fine dining restaurant Hemenways, taking her culinary journey to the next level. Ashley plans to major in Culinary Arts at JWU, building on her experiences and passion. She takes pride in her personal growth and the development of her culinary skills. Ashley has earned certifications in ServSafe Food Handler and ServSafe Alcohol. Her post-Met plan involves committing to JWU for an associate's degree in Culinary Arts. Bethany Hernandez has a deep passion for aesthetics and cosmetology. She takes pride in successfully completing a 12-week CNA course while managing her regular school work and job responsibilities. Her best internship experience was at The Miriam Hospital, and her post-Met plan involves attending CCRI for the first two years and transferring to URI to pursue her bachelor's degree.Enyelis Reyes has shown a keen interest in Art Education. During her senior year, she focused her STP on addressing budget cuts in art programs and organized a Community Block Party: For All, By Us. This event featured young BIPOC artists showcasing their talents. Enyelis takes pride in all her accomplishments, but her senior project holds a special place as she was able to see it through to completion. Her best internships were at Cranston Municipal Court and West Bay RI, with the latter allowing her to form a strong bond with an individual with disabilities while working on a project about gaining trust. Kimberly's notable achievement was her involvement in the Rhythm & Roots Festival, where she assisted with press check-ins and made valuable connections. Throughout her internship, Kimberly demonstrated skills in communication, social reasoning, and soft skills such as creativity and flexibility. She holds a ServSafe Alcohol certification and plans to attend the University of Rhode Island to study Marketing & Business after graduating from the Met.Naviah Whitehead has dedicated over a year to her internship at Joyful Hearts Early Learning Center, where she takes pride in being a mentor and guide to the children. Naviah values the relationships she has built with the kids and emphasizes the lessons she has learned from them. Her best internship experience has been at Joyful Hearts, where she had the opportunity to create her own activities and lessons for the children. Filming a video for Jericho Simmons during his internship at Raynham Channel stands out as Renier's best internship project. He has earned certifications in Television Production I and II and has taken a college class on College Success. Renier's post-Met plan involves participating in the Year Up program.Thalia Reyes has shown interest in business management, accounting, the medical field, and computer science. For her STP, she focused on a hospital and a special needs home in Guatemala. Thalia takes pride in pushing herself to travel alone to Guatemala, overcoming her fear. She kept in touch with Lynne, who was involved in the project, and values her determination and persistence. Thalia has also taken college classes such as College Success, American Sign Language, Introduction to Dental Health Careers, and currently, she is enrolled in Cybersecurity, which will earn her 4 credits at URI. Her post-Met plan involves attending CCRI for two years before transferring to continue her education.
