Facts about the RacingLegend Wendell Scott The Story of Wendell Scott’s First Winwas December 1, 1963 at Jacksonville200, Speedway Park.• Wendell Scott started from the 15th spotLed 27 laps in the raceBuck Baker originally declared the winner. It wasn’t until two hours after the race was over and Wendell protested did NASCAR check the scorecards and agreed Wendell had lapped two extra laps running 202 laps in a 200 lap race.• • • • • • Wendell was declared the winnerand received his check, but BuckBaker took the checkered flag andtrophy. 1st African-American Race Driver /Team Owner to win a NASCAR race His victory counted for the 1964 NASCAR season although the race was run in 1963 He drove a 1962Chevrolet, his victory was Chevrolet’s only victory as a manufacturer that cup season.PHOTO CREDIT: THE WENDELL SCOTT FOUNDATION
