5Photo by Julia RussellOUR MISSION — As America’s Foremost Summer Theatre, Ogunquit Playhouse produces world-class entertainment that creates unforgettable experiences for our audiences. We are dedicated stewards of an iconic and historic theatre, collaborating with extraordinary artists and creatives to shape the future of American theatre. Our commitment extends to being a driving force of economic impact for our region and serving as a premier cultural destination.Welcome back to our historic Ogunquit Playhouse! The commitment we have to developing New Works pays off again this season by tapping into our shared love of rock ‘n’ roll history for the World Premiere of WHEN ELVIS MET THE BEATLES. This is another in a long line of new musicals, from Floyd Mutrux’s Heartbreak Hotel (2017) and the riotous comedy Grumpy Old Men (2018), to the iconic film adaptations of Mystic Pizza (2021) and the Burt Bacharach-infused My Best Friend’s Wedding the Musical (2024). We hope the memories stirred by this experience will be a love letter from us to you. The show is not only a theatrical retelling, but a lens through which we examine these amazing artists in their very different and complex stages of fame and success.Amazingly, we now find ourselves at the doorstep of closing our 93rd season with the sweeping epic TITANIC THE BROADWAY MUSICAL, delivered by director Shaun Kerrison who has created some of The Playhouse’s most loved audience favorites – Hunchback of Notre Dame, Les Misérables, Witches of Eastwick, South Pacific, and My Fair Lady. Presented on one of the largest sets ever created for our stage, showcasing the stunning original Broadway costumes, you’ll experience some favorite Playhouse stars from years past tell the tale of real passengers from all walks of life who boarded this “Ship of Dreams” for a voyage they could never have anticipated.Of course no year would be complete without celebrating the holidays with Ogunquit Playhouse at The Music Hall. Back by popular demand is Irving Berlin’s beloved WHITE CHRISTMAS, starring our favorite holiday elf the legendary Sally Struthers as General Waverly’s second in command, Martha Watson. We invite you to bring your family and friends to savor this special time of year with us in idyllic Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Keep an eye out for a full cast announcement coming soon! Thanks once again to all of you for making my 20th season as Executive Artistic Director so very special. Your love and support of The Playhouse makes each season more memorable than the last and we relish the opportunity to entertain you.Enjoy the show!Bradford T. 7OUR VALUES — Ogunquit Playhouse strives to value and respect every individual regardless of age, ability, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, or spirituality. The Playhouse is dedicated to creating a safe, open, honest, and equitable workplace of choice for current and future creative artists, performers, and staff. By reflecting these values, we hope to foster a deep sense of belonging and provide an uplifting, welcoming space for everyone on stage, behind the scenes, among our volunteer corps, and our audience.Dear Friends,As we reach the midway point of our summer season, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped us get here. Each production this season has been met with incredible enthusiasm, and none of it would be possible without our remarkable creative, production, scenic, and crew teams. The turnaround schedule for these shows is, quite frankly, impossible—and yet, show after show, our teams deliver with speed, precision, and artistry. Their work ethic and commitment continue to amaze me.At our Arts Academy, we’ve welcomed countless happy campers for two productions: Legally Blonde The Musical Jr. and Raold Dahl's Matilda the Musical Jr. The joy these students bring to the stage is a beautiful thing to witness. I’m so proud of our Education team, who have created not only two joyful productions but also lasting memories for every young person involved. This summer also brought a once-in-a-lifetime moment: welcoming Bernadette Peters back to the Playhouse—59 years after her debut here—for an unforgettable Gala event. I couldn’t be prouder of our production team, who collaborated seamlessly with her touring company, and our Company Management team, who handled the many moving parts with poise and care. To execute such a major event in the middle of our season was no small feat—but our staff and volunteers rose to the occasion, delivering a flawless evening that resulted in record-breaking contributions. While the magic on stage is what our audiences see, so much of what makes the Playhouse extraordinary happens behind the scenes—often unseen, but never unappreciated. The dedication, passion, and relentless hard work of this team is what makes this place special. Here’s to many more extraordinary moments ahead. With gratitude, Deborah Warren Managing DirectorFROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR

11SCAN & BUYThe 1950s ushered in a new style of music - “Rock and Roll”. And there was no one bigger or better than Elvis Presley. You could argue he became the world’s first superstar, and for a time, he was the undisputed King of Rock and Roll. Then, in 1963, four British lads from Liverpool changed everything when they landed in New York City, and turned the world on its head. The Beatles performance on The Ed Sullivan show in 1964 changed the musical landscape forever. And Elvis Presley certainly took notice. A chance for them to meet seemed like destiny. The story we’re telling tonight is the real account of when these titans of music came together one night in the Hollywood Hills to play music, share stories, and rediscover their musical roots. There are no pictures or films of that evening. It only lives in the memories of the surviving Beatles and in the book written by Chris Hutchins, the British reporter who made it all happen. The ultimate dream would have been to see them playing together one day in a mega-concert. Of course, this never would happen with Elvis’s death in 1977, John Lennon’s death in 1980 and George Harrison in 2001.But tonight, through the magic of the theatre, we can bring these two legends together again, to tell their stories and play their incredible music. And it’s our hope that we allow them to be fully human again, with all their frailties and flaws. For it’s not just the genius that makes artists great, it’s their humanity.Hunter FosterDirectorWhen Elvis Met the BeatlesDIRECTOR'S NOTES

No press were to be invited, no pictures to be taken, no recordings to be made, and no leaking any plans in advance.” recalls Beatles press manager, Tony Barrow. On August 27th, 1965, fans lined the streets leading into the secluded Bel Air neighborhood where Elvis was renting a mansion. The focus of their attention was a long black limousine carrying The Beatles, who were on a week-long break in LA during their North American tour.“We tried for a year to meet Elvis, but we could never get to him. We used to think we were a bit of a threat to him and Colonel Tom (which we were), but we never felt brushed off. We deserved to be brushed off. After all, he was Elvis! Who were we to dare to want to meet him?” — Paul McCartneyThe Fab Four pulled up to 525 Perugia Way just after 10:00 pm that evening, and members of Elvis’ famed “Memphis Mafia” were guarding the gates of the estate. “We’d forgotten where we were going. We were in a Cadillac limousine going round and round drinking in the back of the car. We were just having fun and we were all in hysterics. That’s one thing we had forgotten about for a few years — laughing. We got to the gates and someone said ‘We’re going to see Elvis!’ and we fell out of the car laughing like a Beatles cartoon” — George HarrisonUpon entering the house, they were welcomed into a large circular living room bathed in blue and red light. The room contained a crescent-shaped couch, a fully stocked bar, pool tables, a color TV, and a jukebox. “It was very exciting and we were nervous as hell. He had lots of guys around him, like we did in Liverpool. We always had Liverpool people around us, so I guess he was the same. It was a big house, as big as the one we were staying in, and he had pool tables! It seemed amazing to us. It was like a nightclub.” — John LennonIntroductions were made and everyone was invited to sit down. The room already totaled approximately 20 of Elvis’ people, easily outnumbering the Beatles, and the atmosphere was permeated by nervous tension.

45“No one knew what to expect,” Priscilla remembers… “They didn’t know what to say. They just stared at him.”“We were terrified. He was our idol. I remember sitting there thinking ‘It’s Elvis! He looks just like Elvis!’ — John Lennon“Elvis was pretty shy and we were a little shy. I felt I was more thrilled to meet him than he was to meet me.” — Ringo StarrElvis’ friend Jerry Schilling recalls, “Elvis broke the ice by saying, ‘If you’re just going to sit around and stare at me, I’m going to bed,’ which got everyone laughing. The Beatles realized they were dealing with someone who shared their skewed sense of humor, and after that, everybody got along great.”The whole event lasted less than four hours, and on the way out John, Paul, George, and Ringo were presented with gifts — a complete set of signed Elvis albums.Paul McCartney remembered, “It was one of the great meetings of my life. I think he liked us. We certainly didn’t feel any antagonism. I only met him that once, and then the success of our career started to push him out, which we were very sad about, because we wanted to co-exist with him.”The night When Elvis Met The Beatles was a landmark moment in pop culture, quietly symbolizing the passing of the torch between two of the most influential forces in music history. And though this may be your first time hearing about it, the meeting left a lasting impression on the Beatles, inspiring them and deepening their connection to American rock 'n roll.

51It’s astonishing to look back and see how much Ogunquit Playhouse has grown and evolved over the last 93 seasons. Creating world-class productions, assembling boundary-pushing creative teams, casting the finest established and freshest new artists and musicians, and welcoming producing teams who want our audiences to be the first to see their bold new works. This legacy of commitment and passion to the art is one we dearly cherish. From welcoming our first audience on a 1933 Summer evening in a renovated garage in Ogunquit’s town square, to earning national and international recognition for our countless comedic, dramatic, and musical productions, The Playhouse has grown from an ambitious 10-week company to an inspiring year-round, award-winning, self-producing Regional theater. The earliest days of one-week runs and Summer Stock tours evolved over time into what is now a 25-week mainstage season of showstopping productions, with a beloved annual holiday show at The Music Hall in Portsmouth. Our audiences have seen it all – splashy musicals, side-splitting comedies, edgy mysteries, and gripping dramas, starring some of the biggest names in the industry. Elaine Stritch, Buddy Ebsen, Helen Hayes, William Shatner, Cybil Shepherd, BD Wong, Keala Settle, Michael Urie, Latrice Royale, and so many more have spent Summers on our historic stage enthralling theatre lovers of all ages. For that reason, we were and still are a vacation destination for a hundred thousand or more every year. When Bradford Kenney became our Executive Artistic Director in 2006, we focused on bringing the freshest new Broadway musicals to Ogunquit, while maintaining that tradition of casting stars from film and television. Now in his 20th Season, we are seeing theatrical producers worldwide wanting to collaborate with Brad and The Playhouse to cultivate what may be the next great musical to hit Broadway. It’s a testament not only to the gifted artists and staff we employ, but the respect they have for you, our audience, specifically your love and appreciation for all theatre. In recent years, our New Works team has shepherded the development of such shows as My Best Friend’s Wedding (2024), Mr. Holland’s Opus (2022), Mystic Pizza (2021), Grumpy Old Men (2018), and Heartbreak Hotel (2017). Our Artistic and Production teams have reimagined productions like The Da Vinci Code (2023), The Nutty Professor (2022), Murder on the Orient Express (2019), From Here to Eternity (2017), and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (2016); and been the first to produce Regional Premieres of Broadway’s finest including Waitress (2024), Beautiful The Carole King Musical (2022), The Cher Show (2022), Kinky Boots (2019), and Jersey Boys (2018).The Da Vinci Code, 2023 | HANNAH CRUZ, MICHAEL URIEPHOTO GARY NG

57"We’re thrilled to be among the founding members of the Hartwig Legacy Society. We hope you’ll join us."— Noel and Carol LearyIn the 1930s, Broadway producers Maude and Walter Hartwig founded the Manhattan Theatre Colony and brought it to the summer resort town of Ogunquit. After four successful years, the Hartwigs moved the theatre colony from a converted garage on Shore Road to the present-day Ogunquit Playhouse. Their legacy endures today through generations of theatre professionals, audience members, and our beloved Playhouse. If you would like to learn more about how to include the Playhouse in your estate plans, or if you have already done so, please give us a call. We look forward to helping you leave your legacy.
