SFO HARVEY MILK TERMINAL 1 BOARDING AREA BSAN FRANCISCO, CASFO Harvey Milk Terminal 1 Boarding Area B (T1 BAB) includes ground-up and reconstruction of a concrete aviation terminal. HKS / Woods Bagot / ED2 International / KYA JV and Tsao Design Group designed the project. This design-build project includes one structure with three levels above grade. T1 BAB is a portion of the overall $2.4 billion T1 redevelopment project to meet SFO's growing capacity, rapidly evolving technological demands, improved passenger experience, and goal of becoming 'zero net energy'. As one of the largest boarding areas on the SFO campus, T1 BAB reconfigured airside systems for 24 new gates and associated passenger boarding bridges, 18 hold rooms, a central lounge with children's play area, airline clubs, international connections corridor, back of house and support spaces, new baggage handling system, and a galleria-type retail experience with 17 retailers and 15 concessions. The continuous terminal's 1,500' is connected by four people movers, 11 elevators, and multiple temporary and permanent public art displays. The existing, outdated terminal, which was later demolished, remained operational, requiring extensive phasing and relocations. GRAND HYATT SFOSAN FRANCISCO, CAThe Grand Hyatt at San Francisco International Airport is a concrete hotel project built from the ground up. The design, by Hornberger+Worstell, Inc./ED2 International, a JV, features a 12-level structure above grade. The hotel boasts 351 sound-proof guest rooms, including 21 suites and 215 surface parking stalls. Conveniently situated on a 4.7-acre site within the airport grounds, it oers direct access to the AirTrain via a fourth-floor light rail station and is just a stone's throw from terminal buildings and parking garages. Among its features are over 14,000 square feet of versatile meeting space, a 70-seat restaurant serving three meals daily, two bars, a grab-and-go market, a Hyatt StayFit Gym, a yoga room, and a massage treatment room. SFO REACH CUSTOMER HOSPITALITY BOARDING AREAS A & GSAN FRANCISCO, CAThe Customer Hospitality Boarding Areas A & G project at SFO involves two projects to upgrade facilities in the International Terminal Building (ITB) in keeping with SFO’s guiding REACH principles. The interim project involved a fast-track strategic refresh of pre-security food courts (ten concessionaires) and five public concourse areas in Boarding Areas A and G, entailing ceiling, lighting, and furnishing improvements in the food court areas as well as new seating, planting, and convenience power in the concourse areas. The interim project provided the foundation for the more comprehensive and transformative work of the subsequent ITB Ph. I Project, which involves improvements to the passenger concourse and recompose areas, a refresh of holdrooms, and a new exterior terrace at the end of Boarding Area G. The work will be phased to address signage in all terminals, in short-term/employee parking garages, in APM stations, and in the airfield. SALESFORCE TRANSIT CENTERSAN FRANCISCO, CASalesforce Transit Center is a modern regional transit hub connecting eight Bay area counties and the state of California through 11 transit systems. Coined the “Grand Central Station of the West”, the project replaces the former Transbay Terminal at First and Mission Streets with a ground-up, concrete, and steel transportation and recreation project. It includes one structure with four levels above grade and two levels below grade, designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects.Bus access to the transit center is provided via a cable stay bridge which connects the Bay Bridge to the Transit Center’s elevated bus deck level. Built by the Webcor Obayashi Joint Venture and operated by the Transbay Joint Powers Authority, the center accommodates 100,000 passengers each weekday and up to 45 million people annually. In addition to providing access to a variety of transit systems, the project includes a 5.4-acre public rooftop park featuring an amphitheater, restaurants/retail, playground, and fountains, as well as a wide variety of natural beauty via signature landscaping design.The park is accessible by stairs, escalators, and elevators to a gondola on Mission Street and sky bridges from adjacent high-rise towers. The Transit Center is divided into three segments that will behave independently during a seismic event. The three building segments are connected by seismic separation joints whose wider movement range can accommodate the vertical and horizontal motion of the segments during an earthquake. RENO-TAHOE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (RNO) CONSOLIDATED RENTAL CAR FACILITY & GROUND TRANSPORTATION CENTER RENO, NVThe Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) consolidated rental car facility (ConRAC) and ground transportation center is a new concrete facility delivered as a general contracting joint venture with Q&D Construction within a Public-Private-Partnership (P3) contract model. In 2016, RNO commenced a master planning process for the airport, which resulted in a key finding: the need for additional parking and space to support growth of rental car operations. The ConRAC will accommodate steadily increasing rental car demand, generate revenue for the airport, and alleviate existing public parking from rental car use. It's also planned to be the first facility in the country to accommodate a 100% electric rental car fleet. This design-build project consists of the interior construction of 16,000 square feet of oce and operations spaces utilized by the airlines sta, plus a 12,000 square-foot premium airline lounge. The work includes lobbies, administrative work stations, open oce areas, conference rooms, break rooms, storage areas, a ground service equipment maintenance store, IT rooms, locker rooms, and restrooms. AMEX CENTURION LOUNGE RENOVATION & EXPANSION AT SFOSAN FRANCISCO, CAThe project supports the continued growth of the American Express brand and its iconic Centurion Lounges. Webcor completed the work in two phases, all within the fully operational Terminal 3 environment at SFO. To increase the lounge's capacity, Phase 1 entailed the complete demolition and extension of the Mezzanine level, to create expansion space for the lounge (doubling its square footage, from 8,171 SF to 16,606 SF). The demolition work was carefully orchestrated in night shifts to avoid impact to the heavy foot trac and TSA operations during daytime. Phase 2 then entailed the demolition, relocation, and modernization of existing building systems and conditions. The lounge features improved branding and wayfinding elements, a welcoming reception area with living wall, and new men’s, women’s, and all-gender restrooms and shower rooms. Inside, a prep kitchen, buet, and beverage counter serves guests. The lounge area is equipped with phone rooms and comfortable spaces to work and seek respite from the bustling terminal activity. SFMOMA EXPANSIONSAN FRANCISCO, CAThe San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) Expansion is designed by Snøhetta and EHDD Architecture. This GMP project includes a 25,000-square-foot renovation of the existing museum and a 200,000-square-foot addition, including ten levels above and one below grade. The expansion doubles the museum’s exhibition and education space and more deeply weaves the museum into the City’s cultural fabric. The project runs contiguously along the back of the preexisting museum, allowing for seamless integration of the two structures, and extends across an entire city block in San Francisco’s downtown. The elliptical outdoor courtyard provides movable seating for spontaneous gatherings, activities, and special events.The facility's grand lobby connects two workplace floors by an interior atrium with enclosed glass conference rooms above. The atrium is a three-story bleacher space with a sizeable skylit area in the center of the facility, serving as a crossroads where people can see each other from all floors and use the bleachers for informal and formal sharing. It includes three structures, each five-levels above a two-story podium garage. The project is the world's first precertified TRUE Construction Site, adhering to zero waste and circular economy principles. Unforeseen conditions include refuse at the foundation layer that did not meet compaction or bearing requirements and oversized debris. The team developed a cement and lime treatment plan for the existing soil to meet compaction, significantly reducing the cost impact of added scope. Large debris was sorted, avoiding o-hauling as Class II while maintaining environmental standards. GENENTECH BUILDING 35SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CAGenentech Building 35, designed by Perkins&Will, Inc., used Genentech's highly collaborative project delivery (HCPD) model, which incorporates the critical elements of integrated project delivery (IPD). The building has one structure with seven levels above grade and accommodates 1,300 employees in active workspaces. Open stairways, secure light-filled bicycle storage and locker rooms, a reGen Center for meditation and relaxation, a coee bar, and a marketplace cafeteria are some of the building's other amenities. The project was designed and built with Genentech's core values in mind: well-being, collaboration, flexibility, and environmental sustainability. It's a prime example of biophilic design, with views connecting occupants to the local ecologies.The team partnered with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to test building systems, including lighting, lighting controls, shade fabric, and automated shading controls, in LBNL's FLEXLAB facility. We equipped and constructed a section of Genentech's new building on FLEXLAB's large-scale rotating test bed, including furniture, façade systems, flooring, lighting, and ceiling systems. Berkeley Lab researchers conducted comparison tests on dierent options, rotating the test bed weekly to test solutions for three building orientations. Two stand-alone parking structures, totaling 152,496 SF and 683 stalls for Marine personnel Privately Owned Vehicles (POV), represent the second and third parking structures at Camp Pendleton, providing a much-needed upgrade for the day-to-day operations of the men and women stationed on base.The design of the BEQ reflects a “village” atmosphere, with a pedestrian promenade, an outdoor amphitheater, and numerous site amenities, including picnic shelters, barbecues, and recreation facilities. The tri-site complex connects walkways and pedestrian bridges to provide ecient access to home, recreation, training, and work. Recreation and training site improvements include an athletic field with a running track, physical training stations, parachute practice jump pits, and a combat training pit.The design for these facilities emphasizes the building envelopes and decreasing total energy usage by increasing insulation, installing high-eciency fixtures and equipment, and installing a 380 Kw photovoltaic system over 28,700 SF of parking shade structure. U.S. NAVAL HOSPITAL GUAMTUTUHAN, GUAMThe U.S. Naval Hospital Guam is a full-service hospital with 42 beds and a range of short-term acute care services, including emergency medicine, ICU, inpatient procedures, pediatrics, optometry, physical therapy, mental health services, laboratory, and pharmacy. The hospital consists of four structures three levels above grade, with surface parking totaling one acre and 912 stalls. The phased project includes an expansion of the Central Utility Plant and multiple support buildings.The hospital project was critical to relocating 8,000 Marines and their family members from Okinawa, Japan. Despite the existing hospital remaining operational during construction, the project was completed on time and within budget, with the old hospital being demolished after the new one opened. In addition to its healthcare services, the hospital is home to 20 UCSF research centers, making it a hub for medical research and innovation.One of the notable features of ZSFG is its earthquake-resistant design, which includes 115 triple-pendulum-bearing base isolators that ensure the hospital withstands earthquakes and other natural disasters. U.S. NAVAL HOSPITAL GUAMTUTUHAN, GUAMThe U.S. Naval Hospital Guam is a full-service hospital with 42 beds and a range of short-term acute care services, including emergency medicine, ICU, inpatient procedures, pediatrics, optometry, physical therapy, mental health services, laboratory, and pharmacy. The hospital consists of four structures three levels above grade, with surface parking totaling one acre and 912 stalls. The phased project includes an expansion of the Central Utility Plant and multiple support buildings.The hospital project was critical to relocating 8,000 Marines and their family members from Okinawa, Japan. Despite the existing hospital remaining operational during construction, the project was completed on time and within budget, with the old hospital being demolished after the new one opened. This project provided a Gero-Psychiatric Unit for patients with Alzheimer's and dementia-related illnesses. The 8th floor had been vacant for almost 15 years before the renovation. Scheduled to open in the fall of 2025, it will oer a County-operated inpatient facility designed specifically for children and adolescents who require behavioral healthcare. The facility will have a separate floor dedicated to adult patients. Sustainability features include low-velocity, tempered ventilation supplemented by operable windows and individually controlled electric radiant modules. Responsive lighting adjusts according to natural light infiltration, and Blackwell Hall consumes 44% less energy than local code requires, performing 70% better than similar buildings in the same climate, meeting the AIA's 2030 Challenge energy targets. CALIFORNIA MEMORIAL STADIUMBERKELEY, CAThe California Memorial Stadium underwent a renovation, seismic retrofit, and construction of a new state-of-the-art, 63,000-seat stadium designed by HNTB Corporation and STUDIOS Architecture. This project included one structure with eight levels above grade, oering 220,509 square feet of interior space and 155,571 square feet of stadium bowl seating. The renovation project involved lowering the athletic field to enhance sight lines, replacing the grandstand seating, and adding a new plaza level, press box, plaza concourses, and operational spaces. The project also included a Hall of Fame, Field Level Club and Field Club Mezzanine, auditorium, recruiting lounge, retail store, kitchen, visiting team lockers, and training spaces.The new press box structure is a remarkable addition to the stadium, providing broadcast and media support spaces and a multifunctional University Club Level and club seating. The project's redesign resolved significant challenges, such as the seismic upgrading of a historic structure straddling the Hayward Fault while protecting the stadium's historical character, improving accessibility, and adding new seating and service areas within the stadium's walls. UC SAN FRANCISCO MOUNT ZION 2130 POST ST SEISMIC RETROFITSAN FRANCISCO, CAThe original structure at 2130 Post Street, constructed in 1968, faced significant seismic vulnerabilities exposed by the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989 and the Northridge Earthquake in 1994. To address these structural deficiencies, a seismic retrofit was undertaken for this seven-level post-tensioned concrete project. The project scope encompassed the seismic retrofit of the 71-unit residential building and comprehensive upgrades in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, accessibility enhancements, improvements in fire-life-safety measures, and security features.The seismic improvements involved the installation of sheer walls, additional columns, and concrete collector elements. The project is the world's first precertified TRUE Construction Site, adhering to zero waste and circular economy principles. Unforeseen conditions include refuse at the foundation layer that did not meet compaction or bearing requirements and oversized debris. The team developed a cement and lime treatment plan for the existing soil to meet compaction, significantly reducing the cost impact of added scope. Large debris was sorted, avoiding o-hauling as Class II while maintaining environmental standards. The project scope involves constructing a 54-million-gallon reservoir, utilizing 75,000 cubic yards of cast-in-place structural concrete, installing 6,000 linear feet of 96" diameter welded steel water pipe, and laying a 3,000 linear feet 18' diameter concrete-lined conveyance tunnel that runs underneath Forrest Lawn Drive. The building also has a vivarium suite, a greenhouse, and a BSL3 suite. The basement is nestled into the existing topography and connects the laboratory to the shared loading dock. LAWRENCE BERKELEY NATIONAL LABORATORY BUILDINGS 25, 33, 74, & 85BERKELEY, CABuildings 25, 33, 74, and 85 are crucial to Berkeley Labs' research mission as they provide state-of-the-art life-science research space, consolidated functions, and improved eciency. B25 was demolished and abated due to its seismically poor structure and modular trailers to make way for the new B33 building. B33 is a three-level, 43,000-square-foot LEED Gold® general-purpose laboratory that promotes interaction between diverse research groups, including the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research, the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, the Life Sciences Division, and the Physical Biosciences Division.B74 is a two-level, 45,382-square-foot Earth Sciences Building that underwent modernization, laboratory build-out, demolition, and lead and asbestos abatement. It features upgraded building systems and renovated laboratory and oce spaces, including geothermal laboratories with a computed tomography imaging scanner. B74 is now a LEED Platinum® building with a cafeteria, a central meeting room, and an outdoor courtyard for dining.
