WDT HISTORYBY JEAN KERBERIn 1982, the Portland Association of the Deaf (PACD) was the hostfor the National Deaf Bowling Association (NDBA) tournament inPortland, Oregon. Funds were needed for this event, so MikeDinkins proposed having a Timber Contest at Camp Taloali inStayton, Oregon during the Labor Day weekend. Pat Kelly started upa horseshoe tournament. In the first year, under Co-Chairmen DenisMaunier & Mike Dinkins, around 150 people attended the events andcampout during the Labor Day weekend. For the next 2 years, Mike Dinkins was the Chairman of this Timberevent with all the profits going to the Camp Taloali General Fund. PACD decided to make this an annual event as a fundraiser for thecamp at the time. They changed the name of the event to "WorldDeaf Timberfest, Inc." Past Chairman of this event have been RodKerber, Jim Randall, Royal Teets, and many others over the years. This event would never be possible without the volunteerism of somany people who served on all the committees that make up theTimberfest group. On the 10th Anniversary of the World Deaf Timberfest, there wereover 2,500 people from all over the USA and some foreign countriesin attendance. This was the all-time record for attendance for thelast 32 years.Between the year, 2001 and 2011, this event was held only every 5years, with a "Family-style" campout held during the years between. Starting in 2013, WDT Committee decided to host the event every 2years.We hope that your attendance at the bi-annual 35th World DeafTImberfest was an enjoyable camping and memorable experience. Be sure to say, "Thank You" to all the committee members who havevolunteered their time to put on this event which helps andsupports Camp Taloali and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing summerprograms.Back to Content

CAMP TALOALI:THEBEGINNINGBY JEAN TEETSAt a family reunion in the summer of 1972, Roma Rae Cline (RoyalTeets' sister) and Mary Anne Koch (daughter of Betty and Tony Koch)were talking about Mary Anne's work in the area of recreation. RomaRae told Mary Anne that there was a great need to have a leadershipand nature camp for Deaf & Hard of Hearing children in the PacificNorthwest, because, at that time, the only other camp for Deaf &Hard of Hearing children was at Swam Lake, Minnesota. Royal wasbrought into the conversation and the three of them agreed thatthey would start meeting regularly to develop some ideas and see ifthey could get the camp off the ground by using land that belongedto the Koch family. Mary Anne did a lot of writing and organizing onher own.In the spring of 1973, a meeting of interested people was held at theOregon School for the Deaf to show some slides and drawings of thecamp plans, and to rally needed support. About this time, BuddySingleton began to put together the camp brochure for the firstcamp session. The campsite was named Camp Taloali which means"singing bird" in Indian language.A problem of interest came up when a group faced the fact that thestate of Oregon had a new access ordinance that would not allowaccess to the camp off the highway. A delegation of several peoplewent to then-Governor Tom McCall to explain the situation. Headvised them to consult the highway department, and this resultedin the access being granted.A board of directors was formed and incorporation as a non-profitorganization was received. Shortly after this, the 48 acres campsitewas purchased from the Koches. In 1978, an additional 63 acresadjacent to the campsite were purchased, bringing the total acreageto 111.continure next page...

Tony Koch and Jack Campbell, using their own equipment (backhoe, grader, tractor, etc.) At their own expense, dug and laid theunderground electrical lines. A large utility building was erected andthe sanitation facility forms were dog and poured with concrete. Arrangements were made with the National Guard to help withsome of the land leveling and various other projects. Manyvolunteers helped with small projects, clearing brush, trimmingtrees, etc. Royal Teets took care of getting all the permits for the building, wiring, plumbing, and sewer system. He acted as foreman on all ofthe projects to see that everything had been done properly. Julian"Buddy" Singleton helped to move mountains and became the firstcamp director. The first session was a huge success. At that time, there were no cabins, so the campers roughed it in tents andshowered in a makeshift shower out in the open!Since that first session, a number of changes have taken place onthe campsite. Cabins stand under majestic trees. A new pavilionwith a complete kitchen has been built. (Bernice Singleton, who wasthe first camp cook, a mother to the campers, and a "Jill of AllTrades" probably wishes she had the same equipments those longyears ago.)A wonderful swimming pool has also been erected to the delight ofthe campers --- thanks to donations from Pax Riddle and the Lions.Anita Ficklin devoted much of her time toward fund-raising. Herdinners and auctions were very memorable affairs. Lou Campbellwas active in a variety of ways. Royal's parents, Rusty and HazelTeets, were also involved.Bob Jones, a devout member of the mighty Lions, set out to recruithelpers and funds. Through his efforts, key people in the Lionscame on the scene. Walt Trandum made heroic moves to get theLions involved, and these special people have poured thousands ofdollars and equipment into this project. He has continued to travelaround the state talking to members of Lions Clubs and variousorganizations telling them about the camp and what a wonderfulplace it is. His hard work has paid off the property payments andbought needed supplies for all of the buildings. His wife Yvonne, hascontinued to help in whatever ways she can, usually ending up doingsome of the dirtiest jobs.continure next page...

Ron Neffendorf continues to go around seeking thousands of dollarsin donations from businesses for plumbing, wiring, and building. Hiswife Betty, has been instrumental in securing camperships. Heraccomplishments are too numerous to mention.Last but not least are the WORLD DEAF TIMBERFEST committeemembers who have spent hours and hours of their own timepreparing for this celebration. These hardworking people have Deaf& Hard of Hearing children close to their hearts and have donatedproceeds to the camp since they began the Timberfest in 1982. Ourhats go off to them, also! There are so many people who should be lauded for their work!! Kudos go to these numerous people who continue to giveunselfishly of their time and money to make the camp what it istoday and will be tomorrow. These people are the Lions: Lionesses:the TIMBERFEST Committee: the Street Rod Club members: donors:volunteers from associations, athletic clubs, churches, staff fromthe Oregon and Washington schools for the deaf, and people fromoff the street. [note: Tony and Betty Koch (Betty is Royal's cousin)who owned the land originally have this to say: "The reason weconsidered the camp was Royal Teets. We knew him for his traits ofunselfish, hardworking, and levelheadedness. He is a good-natured,caring person"] 1984 - Walt Trandum1985 - Earl hughes1987 - Ron & Betty Neffendorf1988 - Paxton Riddle1989 - Carl Verweibe1990 - John KaufmanCamp TaloaliAward HonoraryDedicationsBack to Content

Back to ContentGreeting fromMuesum HistorianHello, Welcome all of you to the 35th Bi-Annual World DeafTimberfest at Camp Taloali during the Labor Day weekend. It ismy sincere pleasure to welcome you to the 7th opening of theWDT museum. In 1997, we celebrated the first opening of the WDT Museum. The Museum funding was done by the Emerald Valley Club of theDeaf and the World Deaf Timberfest. The reason we establishedthe WDT museum was to honor Mike Dinkins. Denis Meunier andMike Dinkins were the first Grand Co-Chairperson of WDT whenit first started in 1982. The first event was a great success.Toby Dinkins, son of Mike Dinkins, used a chainsaw to cut a logfor the opening of the museum at a ceremony in 1997.In 1985 when Rodney Kerber was Grand Chairperson of the 4thannual WDT, he published the first program book includinglogging event records. From 1982 to 1985 WDT was hosted by the Portland Athletic Clubof the Deaf. In 1987 the Timberfest committee was set up to runthe World Deaf Timberfest, Inc.The WDT museum has a lot of great memorable items. The Museum will be open daily from 9 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 5pm throughout the WDT Labor Day event.Tyro ElliottMuseum Historian
