Thank you for reading our 2023 Impact Report. Summer in Maine is amazing! We enjoy long days, lush grass, gardens, birds, farmers’ markets, outdoor concerts, and beach days. Here, we are fortunate to experience all four seasons, but sometimes, like this year, spring seamlessly slides into summer without warning. While this might be fine for most of us, it poses a challenge for those who depend on defined seasonal changes. Changing weather patterns affect us in Maine and globally. Food producers, both here and around the world, must adapt to these shifts in climate. Climate change impacts crops—from corn to oranges—and these changes ultimately affect consumers. And that is a problem. At Wayside, we rescue edible food donated by farmers, groceries, businesses, Individuals, and various food purveyors. In our warehouse, the food is sorted and distributed to partners in southern Maine. What cannot be used is taken by a team of pig farmers we collaborate with, and the rest is either composted or picked up by Agri-Cycle, a local business that transforms our waste (including packaging) into “renewable energy and healthy soil.” Although this service comes at a significant financial cost, we prioritize it because by keeping food out of landfills, we reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. Increased atmospheric CO2 traps heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, causing rising temperatures and extreme weather patterns. Gone are the days of simply throwing garbage into a dumpster; today, moldy bread, rotting produce, and packaging waste become valuable, earth-friendly byproducts. Everything we do is thanks to your support and commitment to creating a better, kinder, more generous, and sustainable community. We appreciate you and wish you the brightest of summers. - Mary Zwolinski, Executive DirectorI Didn’t Go To Church Today By Ogden Nash I didn’t go to church today, I trust the Lord to understand. The surf was swirling blue and white, The children swirling on the sand. He knows, He knows how brief my stay, How brief this spell of summer weather, He knows when I am said and done We’ll have plenty of time together.Summer Night By Kobayashi Issa Summer night-- even the stars are whispering to each other.

Food Rescue[Our] partnership with Wayside means that we are able to provide fresh fruit & vegetables to families so that children can go home to a healthy dinner. Because Wayside is able to help us feed kids & families, we are able to help them learn better. We are able to be a more encompassing safety net for the families of Riverton Park because of our partnership with Wayside.”- Bridget McAlonan Education Specialist Portland Housing Authority, Riverton Park Study Center 1,000,000 +lbs of food waste kept out of landfills70food donorsshared food with100 partner agencies

Mobile Food PantriesShared enough groceries to make 12,000+ meals5We view Wayside as an anchor organization & its success & consistency has enabled Avesta to roll out other important programs to help drive positive change in our neighborhoods. Piggybacking along-side the Mobile Food Pantries & Community Meals we have successfully implemented cooking classes, vaccine clinics, English learning classes, public health demonstrations, city planning discussions & many other important initiatives. Wayside’s programs have helped create a sense of community, giving residents & neighbors a place to volunteer, create social networks & gain confidence. On top of fighting food insecurity, Wayside Food Programs provides a catalyst for positive change in our communities.”- Nick Kjeldgaard, Resident Services Manager, Avesta Housing

They look forward to a meal & visiting with their neighbors… & the connections have helped to create a stronger community in the building…Wayside gave our community the opportunity to recognize, they have more in common than differences.”- Amy Bisson, Resident Service Coordinator, C&C Realty Management, Motherhouse 7

Savor : the taste or smell of something“Getting snacks & healthy foods from Wayside for the Make it Happen program at King Middle school is a very important part of our programming. Providing tasty snacks for students makes them want to return & gives them the “food fuel” they need to continue to focus & learn for the rest of the afternoon. Having food together every day creates a special community time when we eat & gather together & enjoy good food & each other’s company. We love making healthy smoothies with all of the fruit & veggies from Wayside! Kids really look forward to MIH every day & the snacks are an essential part of it!”- Jennifer Shyka, Make it Happen Coordinator, King Middle School 28,500 shared meals through our Community Meals Program8

Catering CollectiveThe catering model of our Community Meals enables Wayside to host picnics and to support educational, social, and cultural groups hosting events celebrating Portland’s abundance of cultural traditions and strengthening our community. Last year, Wayside shared 1,500 meals through our Catering Collective. Eating and sharing food is a powerful tool for community building, supporting others, passing on important traditions, and creating friendships. Through the Catering Collective, Wayside prepares and delivers meals with the intention of bringing people around the table to strengthen and share the abundance of cultural traditions in our community. “All I can say is Wow! Wayside rocks. Your contribution to our dinner last night was truly amazing. We had well over three hundred people, & for the first time ever we were able to feed everyone who came (without running out for emergency pizzas) & give them seconds. The food was plentiful (!) delicious & beautifully presented.”9- Joanne Abrams, Community Coordinator, King Middle School

Wayside Food Program is an integral partner in the Maine Immigrant Geens Collaborative. In 2023, the partnership that includes the Maine Farm & Sea Cooperative and Farms for Food Equity, were able to deliver and distribute, through Wayside’s network, 1,800 pounds of fresh hearty greens. They were delivered fresh in season, and frozen for use during the winter months. 1,800 pounds represents 16,000 servings”, said Ron Adams, CEO of the Cooperative. “In 2024, with the support of the Elmina Sewall Foundation, the Collaborative will double these amounts. Access to healthy, hearty greens is essential to supporting our immigrant communities, providing locally grown greens that are a base ingredient in many traditional meals.”- Ronald Adams, Chief Operating Officer, Maine Farm & Sea Cooperative
