From the President In this issue of Woodward magazine we include the second part of a series exploring our connections as a community This family tree is a way of learning more about the relationships between the many and varied individuals that make up the Academy The ties that bind us and the wide reach of our school are truly inspiring and I hope you will enjoy reading about some of them here One of the roots of this tree is Missy Sanchez Director of College Counseling who is retiring this spring after 34 years at the Academy She has influenced the lives of thousands of alumni and raised the stature of our College Counseling Department making it one of the finest in the nation Mrs Sanchez is among many members of our faculty and staff who serve our students with great skill and devotion Although we wish that she could remain with us we wish her the best in her future endeavors This issue also includes news about the No Place for Hate program Woodward is in the process of becoming a No Place for Hate school This Anti Defamation League program seeks to rally entire schools around the purpose of eliminating all forms of bias and bullying The program is being embraced by our students as well as teachers administrators and all other members of the faculty and staff The members of the Board of Governors signed a resolution in support of No Place for Hate at their January meeting In addition the Strategic Plan for 2011 2016 was unanimously and enthusiastically approved by the Board of Governors in January This plan is the culmination of the work during my first year in office when I held numerous listening sessions to hear from literally hundreds in our community on their feelings about where Woodward is today and the course we should set for our future The plan takes into account the recommendations of four Blue Ribbon Task Forces focused on Mission Sustainability Community and P E Athletics The Strategic Plan does not call for a radical departure from our past practices rather it provides key direction to strengthen and focus our work The premise of the plan is that each of us whatever our role has an important place at Woodward Our collective efforts each day keep us focused on our mission In the spring summer issue of this magazine we will publish the Strategic Plan in its entirety Meanwhile I share with you my continued joy at being the leader of this great school I look to our future with great anticipation F Stuart Gulley WINTER 2010 2011 1

SPOTLIGHT Not Lost Just Wandering T he Upper School students in the Performance Ensemble along with their Director Robert Putnam worked together to create something very unusual in high school theater an original play conceived written and produced primarily over the course of one semester The idea germinated at the end of last school year when the Performance Ensemble formed Mr Putnam had worked with most of the students since they were in seventh grade and he knew that they had the creative drive and talent to produce their own play Over the summer he worked on a concept and wrote some dialogue for the group The students came together in the fall and began their work in earnest guided by Mr Putnam and with creative consulting from Heidi Howard Production Manager and Education Director at Atlanta s 7 Stages The result a play they titled Not Lost Just Wandering centers around a group of teens spending one evening together before and after a concert in the Little Five Points neighborhood The play s themes friendship honesty young love dealing with struggles like chronic illness and drug abuse are powerful Original music by ensemble member Conrad Norman flows through the play and ties it together Beginning with Mr Putnam s concept and dialogue the ensemble worked together to write the play After a Challenge Day that helped the members break down boundaries so that they could be open and honest with each other they began work on a series of scenes they called collages The students took ideas from their own lives and that of their director shaping their characters and the play into its final form This all took place over about 10 weeks 8 Following are excerpts from a roundtable discussion about the play and the process of creating it with Mr Putnam and members of the Performance Ensemble Lucy The entire process was a bonding experience At first we didn t know each other that well Now we are all close friends Brett It was a real eye opener to the creative process Even though I had written before my first drafts had always been final drafts With this play I really wanted to push myself Mr Putnam They really wanted to make sure what went on that stage was as honest and truthful as they are themselves Rachel Originally I wanted a plot line to follow but this process helped me become more relaxed and carefree It was a defining experience and one I ll remember until I m old and gray David The character felt like part of me It brought me back to my childhood that s where I got all the material Like my character I was late to mature Thanks to this experience I ve gotten more confident in my ideas Paige When we put it on stage there was that moment of relief We realized it was going to work Jane The main response from our audience members was that the play was real and that it touched on something that happened in their lives I was very happy about that Something we created actually touched someone s life Not Lost Just Wandering was a unique experience for the students Few high school theater students have the opportunity to take an original idea and then write and perform their own full length play Mr Putnam said This group was so full of openness and wonder and that s why I knew they could do this It s one of those amazing experiences that I ll carry with me for a long time too he added The script for Not Lost Just Wandering may be published and performed in other schools Stay tuned Members of the Performance Ensemble Lucy Condolora David Holloway Jane Joyner Elena Klonoski Paige Lauer Rebecca Miller Brett Myers Conrad Norman Jasmyn Elise Story Rachel Whiteman Ferozan Walizai W O O D WA R D A C A D E M Y

WOODWARD GOES HOLLYWOOD We use the term Hollywood a bit loosely We thought it would be fun to catch up with alumni working in film and television and on the stage Hunter Bell 89 writer performer Tony Award nominated Broadway musical title of show feature film Men Who Stare at Goats Alex Dawson 89 actor writer producer Door Slammer Productions Clara s Carma Screening at the Atlanta Film Festival in April Jonathan Spencer 91 actor Recurring role on Showtime s new hit Shameless feature film Pineapple Express How did Woodward prepare you for the future Every aspect of Woodward Academy prepared me for my career as a professional writer performer The diverse curriculum made me curious confident and a better writer My extracurricular activities especially in theater and the opportunities that came from being a Woodward student led directly to my decision to pursue writing and performing And because of the uniforms I know how to tie a tie very quickly I became a self starter at Woodward and that experience most positively impacted me for the future There was a heightened intellectual structure but there was also a built in structure of free time We decided how we used that time That was invaluable So much of my working life is dependent on how I use my time when I m not at an audition attending a film festival teaching a yoga class or sitting in traffic I transferred to Woodward in the 11th grade so that I could study with Mrs Linda Wise late head of the Theater Department Her reputation was legendary She had trained Holly Hunter from Raising Arizona my favorite movie Mrs Wise s English class was more difficult and more rewarding than any college class I ever took Woodward also provided me with the structure and guidance that I desperately needed at age 16 Thanks Dean Slider What is it like working in your field Some days I feel like a rock star others are incredibly challenging You need the talent and creativity to develop something and then it takes an immense amount of work persistence and courage to put it out there and make it successful I ve experienced incredibly high highs have been able to do things that felt like being in a great dream and have met some of my heroes Ultimately I feel lucky to be doing what I love 24 It s like driving around the perimeter in rush hour or for those of you in California the 405 110 or 101 But as long as you really want to go where you are going and you have great music and satellite radio it s all worth it W O O D WA R D A C A D E M Y It s the only career I know of where your life could drastically change forever every single day that you go to work By work I mean auditioning I consider auditioning to be my job The actual acting part is easy Getting the job is much more difficult My background is marketing and I use those skills every day in my acting career
