EMBRACING DIFFERENCES Week of Understanding This spring President Stuart Gulley wrote a heartfelt message to the Woodward community during the Week of Understanding March 27 31 giving context to the tradition now in its 15th year and reiterating the school s commitment to being a standard bearer Indeed this year s program may be more important than ever given the deteriorating state of respect for difference in our country The rise in anti Semitic incidents nationwide including the desecration of Jewish cemeteries is deeply troubling Across the world Muslims are experiencing increased threats and discrimination We need this Week of Understanding to re center us and remind us that we are a community where everyone regardless of our differences receives respect and appreciation A hallmark of a Woodward education is providing the opportunity to help us examine the world through the lens of someone different from ourselves While I hope that our daily interactions at the Academy encourage that to happen naturally and throughout the year the Week of Understanding is our conscious attempt to see the goodness in people of all races ethnicities nationalities faith traditions abilities ages sexual orientations and gender identities It is our means of living out the Woodward Way respecting ourselves each other our school and our world More than anywhere else in Atlanta and most likely the nation we are blessed to be a global school representing the great diversity of the world We are committed to learning to live together in cooperation and respect I take great pride in hearing from outside observers that they view Woodward as Atlanta at its best May we continue to lead the way for Atlanta and our country by using this Week of Understanding as a reminder of the gift of our rich diversity the gift of embracing people who are different from ourselves not fearing or reviling them 14 WOODWA R D M AGA ZINE SUMME R 2017 Jacob Mach A Lost Boy s Journey Home Jacob Mach s visit to the Lower School was one outstanding aspect of this year s Week of Understanding Not only is Mr Mach an Atlanta police officer and a Woodward parent of fourth grader Mach Mach he s also one of the Lost Boys of Sudan who grew up in Sudanese Ethiopian and Kenyan refugee camps Mr Mach told a rapt student audience about his journey which began when he was forced to flee civil war in what is now South Sudan As a 7 year old Mr Mach made a twomonth barefoot journey during which many friends and fellow Lost Boys died of exhaustion starvation and dehydration Perhaps even more terrifying many others died of violent onslaughts by their persecutors and attacks from lions and crocodiles Somehow Mr Mach survived but his journey did not end there After four years in an Ethiopian refugee camp he was displaced again by civil war Another harrowing journey ensued this time back to Sudan then on to Kenya where he eventually landed in a refugee camp and at 12 years old began elementary school For years he survived on one UN sponsored meal a day but worked hard and kept his faith that he might one day find another home
footing it was Mr Mach s grit and perseverance that ultimately led to his success And his successes are many after gaining his GED he graduated from Georgia State while working nights as a security guard After years of working in security he graduated from the Atlanta Police Academy and as of February 2017 became an Atlanta police officer He s grateful for the chance to give back to the community in his role as a police officer Mr Mach frequently works with homeless veterans If I can make it you can he tells them Photo by Wendy Stone care of Corbis Historical Collection In 1999 Mr Mach was one of approximately 4 000 Lost Boys to qualify for resettlement in the United States More than 15 000 other Lost Boys remained in refugee camps in east Africa though they are still considered the lucky ones given the staggering 2 5 million people who died in the Sudanese civil war Mr Mach however all of a sudden found himself in a small apartment in Atlanta The journey was still not over he arrived not knowing how to turn on the lights or the water yet needing somehow to figure out how to make ends meet While state and federal immigration refugee and war relief services helped him get his Lower School students listened carefully to Mr Mach s story and were still absorbed as he ended his presentation saying You go to the best school in the state you have the best most caring teachers the best coaches the greatest chance to learn the best opportunities It is up to you to succeed But you have to follow the rules and respect everyone For the fourth fifth and sixth graders in the audience it wasn t just another adult telling them how to behave or even another Woodward parent giving advice The message to embrace all of Woodward s opportunities while fully respecting everyone had a special significance coming from Mr Mach whose incredible perilous journey and will to succeed are lessons to us all Alana Simmons Hate Won t Win On June 17 2015 Alana Simmons was driving home when she got a call from her father She pulled over and heard the words that forever devastated her family There has a been a shooting at your grandfather s church Ms Simmons is the granddaughter of Rev Daniel L Simmons Sr who was brutally gunned down along with eight other worshippers at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston S C by 21 year old white supremacist Dylann Roof after welcoming Roof into their Bible study During the Week of Understanding Ms Simmons shared her story with students at the Lower School She told them about the awful night of praying continually while waiting for news of her grandfather At 5 a m her Alana Simmons continues next page l r Courtney Dunbar Jones co author of a book with Ms Simmons her mom Barbara Dunbar a Lower School teacher Ms Simmons and President Stuart Gulley WOODWARD EDU 15

COMMITMENT TO SERVICE Connecting New Friends to Terranova On a planet with a population in the billions unexpected connections can form between people across thousands of miles That s what happened when a group of lively elderly ladies average age 87 in Colorado reached out through Woodward Academy to the children of Mazabuka Zambia The ladies are part of a knitting class at the retirement community Someren Glen in Centennial Colorado Knitting 101 meets weekly Last year they gave away 208 hats to women s and children s shelters So how did the ladies of Knitting 101 learn about Woodward and its sister school in Zambia the Terranova School Early in 2017 George Dietz science teacher and Middle School assistant principal asked eighth grader Kira Bowman about the hand knit hat she was wearing Kira told Mr Dietz it was gift from a friend of her mom Julie Bowman From Woodward Academy in Atlanta to Someren Glen in Centennial Colorado back to Atlanta and then on to Terranova Africa there are many miles of love Helen Lenda Mr Dietz who heads up Woodward s Terranova relationship knew that babies and young children there needed warm hats when temperatures drop so he contacted Kira s mom who in turn put him in touch with Helen Lenda the Knitting 101 instructor Right away the ladies flew into action their needles flying fast enough between January and April to make 153 hats which were packed off to Woodward and then on to Terranova The story doesn t end there Mr Dietz sent Ms Lenda photos of children at Terranova some of them holding pencils with huge smiles on their faces He explained that pencils are cherished items Once again the Knitting 101 group sprang into action They raised 188 to send pencils sharpeners and cases to Woodward where students volunteered to assemble pencil kits More recently a volunteer at Someren Glen hand crafted wooden toys which found their way into the hands of the Terranova children this summer From Woodward Academy in Atlanta to Someren Glen in Centennial Colorado back to Atlanta and then on to Terranova Africa there are many miles of love Ms Lenda wrote to Mr Dietz Thank you for allowing Knitting 101 to participate in such a wonderful project They are already knitting hats for next year s collection Terranova continues at top of next page 18 WOODWA R D M AGA ZINE SUMME R 2017

Summer 2017 Travel Several of the kids have now realized that they cannot maintain their spending level of 100 euros a day I mentioned the word budget to them and they looked at me in wonder We will work it out and no child will go hungry My interest rates are modest Day 6 March 8 The kids are eating their way through France What is amazing is that it is as if they never stop eating They eat at the meals in between and constantly have snacks I don t know how they manage at school They have really enjoyed every day and for the most part they get along well Many have now incorporated the word budget into their vocabulary as they have learned that their money does not somehow magically reproduce itself in their pockets The kids really enjoyed Nice today and we spent a lot of time walking and touring the city I think they also stopped at every ice cream shop along the way Probably the highlight of the day for your kids was playing at the water s edge of the Mediterranean Sea They tried to skip rocks Some of your kids need to get out into nature a bit more We did not represent America too well in the rock skipping department Day 7 March 9 The kids enjoyed Monaco and the perfume factory I am betting the French economy surged a bit today This was my first time to Menton France and it is what everyone envisions Europe to be I was noticing how many senior people have retired here and then realized that they were probably looking at me and thinking the same thing We will probably have somewhat of a long day tomorrow as we are off to Italy for the day I think we are in San Remo Day 8 March 10 The kids spent the day in Italy and tried to spend the remaining euros that they had They have realized that the euro is not spendable at home I think the highlight of the trip for the kids was going to the Mediterranean Sea For some reason one of the boys asked if he could swim As the water was a warm 40 or so I said sure go for it The French stopped walking on the boardwalk and watched the crazy Americans playing in the water Both groups were laughing and having a good time As for me I m ready to see my wife and my dog UPPER SCHOOL Chorus Performance Tour of Holland Belgium and France Traveling to Amsterdam Bruges Paris and more the Upper School Chorus explored new cities while performing for a European audience Aussie Odyssey Summer 2017 Australia and Hawaii Students visited two of our partner schools and experienced the cultures and breathtaking landscapes of these two beautiful islands China Summer Shenzhen Hong Kong Guilin Chengdu Shanghai Students dove into Chinese cultures language and food while taking special excursions and staying with host families Tropical Ecology Field Study in Costa Rica Through hands on investigations students discovered some of the richest ecosystems on earth rainforests cloud forests mangroves caves and more MIDDLE SCHOOL Gateway to the Americas Panama This educational trip took students to a Central American gem Panama to experience another world and inspire a sense of global citizenship La F te Fran aise Paris Provence Nice and more provided an entr e into French society and culture for students Independent Schools Cultural Alliance Trip England With students from around the globe middle schoolers experienced cultural historical and social experiences across England WOODWARD EDU 21
WAR EAGLE WATCH Go War Eagles Woodward Academy s athletic teams excelled again in 2016 2017 capturing 11 region or area championships and qualifying 21 teams for state tournaments or playoffs The Academy also finished 4th overall in the Georgia Athletic Directors Association s Director Cup AAAA standings This spring Woodward magazine interviewed two rising seniors outstanding studentathletes who represent the War Eagle Spirit Is there a different way you approach clay target competitions in comparison to how you approach tennis The clay target team and the tennis team are similar in a few ways but very different in others For both you have to make quick decisions and be able to perform based on those decisions The difference is the repetition in shooting versus the unpredictability of the other player in tennis Also shooting is an individual sport where you are competing for your personal best whereas tennis is competing to win the match for your team Have you started to look at colleges What are you looking for in a school I want a school that is big but not terribly big and is located in a small town I ve visited many colleges and plan on visiting a couple more So far I really like Auburn Alex Potts 18 Alex holds the record in girls pole vaulting for Woodward Academy When did you start competing in pole vault What drew you to that event specifically Finn Gosch 18 Finn is a double sport athlete on the tennis and clay target teams He s pictured above with the tennis team front row second from left How exciting was it to be part of a region champion tennis team this year At the beginning of the season the team made goals for what we wanted to accomplish and being region champions was at the top of the list We worked very hard to accomplish this goal and when we did everybody on the team was ecstatic When did you get started playing tennis I started playing tennis when I was around 6 years old My mom signed me up for one week of tennis camp and on the last day I loved it so much I begged her to sign me up for the whole summer 22 WOODWA R D M AGA ZINE SUMME R 2017 I started pole vault freshman year I was a gymnast for about 10 years and when the track coaches found that out they all suggested that I try pole vault I really enjoyed it right from the beginning because it s just really fun to do Alex Potts 18 continues at top of next page
What was your favorite athletic experience this year My favorite athletic experience would have to be last summer when I competed at New Balance Nationals It was my first really big meet and even though I was in a lower division I had the time of my life and I actually jumped really well Have you started the college application process What schools interest you at this point I feel like even though my senior year hasn t even started I am well into the college process As of now I don t really have a top college choice but a few that I m interested in are the University of Miami Duke and Stanford How does it feel to be in the Woodward record books for pole vaulting When I actually think about it it s kind of weird to me that I ve jumped the highest of any girl who has ever jumped at Woodward I ve only been vaulting for less than three years For more on spring sports go to wareaglewatch org MI Onward Athletes Congratulations to the 34 members of the Class of 2017 who will continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level Check out our map to see the places they ll go 1 Kenny Andrews Elon University Soccer 2 William Berkey Davidson College Soccer 3 Morgan Brinson American University Soccer 7 4 Garnet Brown Davidson College Track Field 5 Kayla Bruster UGA Soccer TX 6 Julian Cameron LaGrange Basketball 7 Ryan Capo Southern Methodist University Soccer 8 Anna D Cruz University of Alabama Birmingham Volleyball 9 Weston Dunkel Hampden Sydney College Lacrosse q Hunter Falconer Wingate University Football w Daniel Farzaneh Mercer University Football e Makenli Forrest University of Louisville Track Field r Julia Gianneschi Duke University Fencing t Ryan Glass Georgia State University Baseball y Ryan Glover University of Pennsylvania Football u Lauren Graham Sweet Briar College Swimming i Joshua Harrison Mercer University Soccer o Jeffrey Hubbard Eastern Michigan University Football p Kie Jie Jacobs Jacksonville University Soccer a Illana Jamison Clemson University Track Field s Joshua Johnson University of Louisville Football d Josh McCullough Washington University St Louis Football 6 WOODWA R D M AGA ZINE SUMME R 2017 og h f PA IL MO VA d es l MS c z yx NJ 3 u 9 KY k1r 24 NC q ja SC 5 8 6twv i AL GA b p FL f Brennan McDaniel University of Chicago Basketball g Terry Myrick Eastern Michigan University Football h J R Pace Northwestern University Football j Keller Pilch Furman University Lacrosse k Katie Pressgrove Wake Forest University Cheerleading l Zachary Quarterman Delta State University Football Kobe Sandel Birmingham Southern College Football z Sultaan Shabazz Princeton University Football x Andy Sun University of Pennsylvania Fencing c Ben Wilkinson Bucknell University Lacrosse v Brennan Silliman Georgia College State University Cross Country Track Field b Cade Sutherland University of South Alabama Football WOODWARD EDU 23
ARTS IN THE AERIE Skylark Vocal Ensemble Makes Music with Woodward Choirs The voices of the Middle School girls in Suzanne Woodruff s choir class came together to make a big and beautiful sound During a visit from from Matthew and Carolyn Guard of the Skylark Vocal Ensemble the singers got some valuable coaching from professionals who work with vocalists all over the country The Guards gave students a window into careers in music I m proof that you can pursue a career in music Matthew told them If you re passionate about music now at your age don t think that you have to give it up Matthew and Carolyn met at Harvard where they both sang in the University Choir They married and moved to Atlanta earning their MBAs at Emory Both went to work for consulting firms and joined the choir at St Philip s Episcopal Cathedral but the couple wanted to devote themselves to music while earning a living Both of us learned a lot at business school and looked on our time in consulting as practical training Matthew said We always had the idea that we would do something more entrepreneurial and I wanted to get back into conducting I just didn t know how Things came together when friends approached them with a business idea making aviator style sunglasses for kids Their company Babiators was born As Carolyn focused on the business Matthew found a way back to 24 WOODWA R D M AGA ZINE SUMME R 2017 conducting He went part time in consulting working three months on three months off so that he could build the musical program that became Skylark A project based vocal ensemble Skylark brings together professional singers to stage concerts The ensemble grew from one or two performances a year to a full season of 15 performances on the stages of Carnegie Hall Lincoln Center Boston Symphony Hall the Atlanta Symphony and Spivey Hall Skylark stages innovative projects including one at MIT that used music to explain mathematical concepts At Woodward Matthew and Carolyn spent a day working with students in the Upper and Middle School choirs and an evening conducting the Camerata ensemble through their repertoire After a session with the Middle School choir Matthew came away impressed with Woodward s young vocalists They are surprising in two ways they are fantastically well trained and musical and they are super engaged and into it The Guards visit was supported by the H Bruce McEver 62 Visiting Artists program which brings artists to campus to enrich students experiences Mr McEver founded Berkshire Capital in 1983 He holds degrees from Georgia Tech Harvard Business School and Harvard Divinity School Spring Theatre at Woodward Upper School students performed Into the Woods James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim s modern interpretation of classic storybook characters and tales on the stage of the Ben F Johnson III 61 Theatre Also this spring Middle School players produced Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr pictured below based on the 1970s cartoon and Lower School students staged Willy Wonka the Chocolate Factory

GIVING BACK Why Does Woodward Fund Participation Matter Woodward falls far short of national and peer school standards for annual giving participation the reason it matters may surprise you One hundred percent parent participation would be incredible says Woodward dad Todd Miller Kirkham 28 and Boone 30 who volunteers and supports The Woodward Fund along with his wife Emily Ultimately it s not about how much someone gives but the sentiment of it One hundred percent participation would show an amazingly dedicated and supportive parent community In 2017 2018 parent participation increased by 10 percent to 45 percent and alumni participation increased to 13 percent from 10 percent However participation remains far short of 100 percent and Woodward still falls short of our peer schools for parental participation PEER SCHOOL COMPARISON From left to right Emily Valentina 3 years old Kirkham rising 2nd grader Todd Tucker 1 year old Boone rising Kindergartener Ultimately it s not about how much someone gives but the sentiment of it One hundred percent participation would show an amazingly dedicated and supportive parent community Todd Miller Most people understand The Woodward Fund covers a portion of the gap between the amount of money tuition brings in and the school s actual operating budget and supports things like teacher development technology sports equipment and cocurriculars just to name a few but we often forget that participation in The Woodward Fund also is a vote of confidence in our school It s about being a part of our community believing in Woodward s mission and standing up for the Woodward education Because participation is so meaningful in and of itself every gift truly makes a difference I know everyone makes a lot of sacrifices to send their children to Woodward already and that giving to The Woodward Fund may seem unnecessary given tuition says Todd But I m also fairly confident that a majority of our families could afford to give at least 25 a year Think of how much more could be achieved if everyone just gave a little Such gifts really do add up and an increase in participation would enhance the opportunities and resources for Woodward students Just as importantly however participation shows that our community believes in our children and stands together to provide the best possible education for them For Todd and his family community spirit shines through faculty and staff participation Woodward Fund continues at bottom of next page 26 WOODWA R D M AGA ZINE SUMME R 2017

SUCCESS BEYOND WOODWARD From Dr Chris Freer Vice President and Dean for Student Life Upper School Principal Reflections on the Class of 2017 The Class of 2017 is the largest senior class to graduate from Woodward Academy in our 117 year history 276 seniors including scholars artists athletes and servant leaders who will matriculate to 108 different colleges and universities around the globe next fall While there are countless attributes of a Woodward graduate there is one distinct characteristic that I believe embodies the Class of 2017 comfort with ambiguity I know what you are thinking Comfort with ambiguity Seriously What does that even mean Why not leadership character or the trendy grit The Class of 2017 has certainly demonstrated all of these qualities Their selfless leadership was on display on their last day of classes when the retired tradition of Rip Day was replaced with the new tradition of Drip Day All year we witnessed their strong character in genuine service to others working with the Boys Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta Atlanta Community Food Bank Habitat for Humanity Horizons and our sister school in Zambia the Terranova School And their grit was ubiquitous on the playing fields the stage and in the classroom as they developed the strong work ethic needed to struggle through the curricular and cocurricular demands of the Upper School has grown together Throughout their time in the Upper School this class has faced ambiguity from starting their freshman year in Cottage Park during the construction of Jane Woodruff Hall to persevering through our current political climate Through a multitude of shared experiences the Class of 2017 has learned that when the outside world gets confusing we have to remember we are more alike than we are different Despite our different backgrounds and affinities we share many common goals hopes and dreams issues in black and white there is gray Understanding and valuing differing perspectives is essential for critical thinking and ethical problem solving During their Upper School experience our students confront ambiguity both intentionally and organically and these lessons result in personal growth Our faculty and coaches push students to broaden their perspectives and struggle with uncertainty Life is uncertain and those who are comfortable with this reality are better positioned to succeed and lead in the real world So what exactly is comfort with ambiguity and how does this relate to the Class of 2017 In simple terms it is a skill that allows an individual to remain composed when faced with difficult challenges or meaningful change When things do not go as As I reflect on the Class of 2017 I have little doubt that our students are ready for this world and all of its challenges For one reason our Woodward seniors have spent the past four or more years developing a deep respect for difference that authentically reflects the world outside The Woodward community is made up of every difference imaginable from race and religion to learning styles and ethnicities Our students represent geographical diversity traveling to our campus from 23 different zip codes via car bus or MARTA These 276 individuals comprise a class that is truly a microcosm of the city of Atlanta Our students embrace differences through learning playing serving questioning and listening They grow Through a multitude of shared experiences the Class of 2017 has learned that when the outside world gets confusing we have to remember we are more alike than we are different Dr Chris Freer But it s the way this class engages with each other on a daily basis that stands out to me This diverse group of 276 individuals including 69 Vintage Eagles and 45 students who entered Woodward in high school planned a person who is comfortable with ambiguity realizes that there may be multiple ways to approach a problem Life is both complicated and fluid As much as we search for concrete answers and want to view Reflections continues at top of next page 28 WOODWA R D M AGA ZINE SUMME R 2017
comfortable with the ambiguity that surrounds us and they do not shy away from difficult conversations In fact the Class of 2017 s comfort with ambiguity was evident before they were seniors As juniors this class initiated and organized student led assemblies for all four grades of the Upper School to confront challenges they witnessed in their school as a consequence of the vitriolic rhetoric surrounding the presidential election This thoughtful display of collective leadership took both strength and character to challenge what they knew was wrong Through this experience these seniors learned that leadership during times of uncertainty is not always easy but it is necessary Reflecting on the students who comprise this class I acknowledge that everyone develops these skills at different times and degrees This is an essential aspect of ambiguity that makes for a beautifully diverse and complicated community of individuals There are members of this class who have excelled in leadership and have proven to be comfortable when faced with challenges Others have yet to realize their tremendous potential but will be ready when the opportunity is presented Seniors as you begin a new chapter be confident that you are well prepared You are prepared for the academic rigor you will face in college and you are prepared with the grit and leadership skills necessary to be successful as you pursue your passions Throughout your life you will be confronted with challenges and contradictions but I trust you will find comfort knowing that you are prepared to lead in this increasingly ambiguous world Learning to See at Woodward Academy Excerpts from the 2017 Commencement Address given by Brennan McDaniel who will attend the University of Chicago As we the Class of 2017 leave the walls of the Academy it s important for us to remember the words of President Gulley In life we are sometimes led to places people and experiences that are unexpected and prove to be truly transformative For me like President Gulley this describes the experience of my coming to Woodward Academy So to begin I would like to share with you a brief story To paraphrase James Baldwin the American novelist playwright and social critic Most of the Americans that I have ever encountered truly have nothing against other people That s really not the question It s really about apathy and ignorance You don t know what s happening on the other side of the world because you don t want to know What many of you may not know is that I have only attended Woodward for the past two years Prior to that I attended a private Christian school in the northern suburbs of Atlanta since the sixth grade It was a school that both my parents and I chose based on the religious component and its academic rigor I was very excited to attend and to be quite honest for the majority of my time there I felt good about my place in the school Despite this initial comfort however early on things began to change in a way that I could not put my finger on There was an undercurrent that was playing out that I couldn t entirely grasp but that I knew was there As guys we told crude jokes and said stupid things but as the only black boy in my grade I was sensitive to the fact that at times the comments were simply racially insensitive As the years went by either the jokes increased in number or I took them more personally maybe both The ironic thing throughout these episodes was that my classmates wondered why I didn t find the jokes as funny as they did Here is where James Baldwin s message applies Most of the Americans that I have ever encountered truly have nothing against other people It s really about apathy and ignorance You see my classmates were not bad people they simply felt it OK to share these types of jokes because according to them I was somehow different from their impression of other black people although most of the blacks that I know and who are in my family are generally like me But what confused me most was that in my eyes my friends and I were so much alike We shared similar interests socioeconomic status exposure and spiritual beliefs After all I had spent so much of my life learning how to interact with people who were Brennan McDaniel continued on next page WOODWARD EDU 29
Brennan McDaniel continued from page 29 different than me I just could not understand why underneath it all my skin color still ultimately made me so different from them And they didn t seem to understand that This experience changed me in a way that I think will affect my perspective on the way people see one another or rather don t see one another Ultimately I knew I had to make a change so that this situation wouldn t change me on a deeper level So what does this have to do with Woodward Academy Well after much prayer and discussion my parents and I determined that Woodward seemed to be a good place for me to explore Of course I was skeptical to make the switch due to the fact that I would be transferring for my 11th grade year Who does that Everyone tells us how your junior year of high school is the hardest and that it also is the most important year as it relates to college But I felt strongly that I did not want the rest of my high school tenure to be like the previous five years I was leaving a school where everyone knew me I had gained the respect of teachers and the administration At Woodward I would have to re establish myself in an entirely new community I tell you this story because it directly relates to the importance of a school like Woodward Academy On this journey I have come to find out there are very few private schools in the country that can compete with the dynamic combination that Woodward displays a high level of academics and a real world social experience Woodward s academic rigor is well known throughout the state and the country as evidenced by the amazing schools to which 30 WOODWA R D M AGA ZINE SUMME R 2017 my peers have been accepted Colleges clearly look highly upon students from Woodward What is sometimes overlooked when we focus on the Academy s academics and its athletics is that Woodward is a hidden gem The administration has created an intentional community The confluence of students of diverse ethnicities socioeconomic backgrounds thought and religion is the true barometer of this school s esteemed position in this city Woodward is a microcosm of what the rest of the world looks like Some consider this period a post racial society yet James Baldwin and others point out how often we tend to disregard or fail to understand the things we don t personally relate to Thus it s human nature at times to marginalize groups of people according to race gender religion culture sexual orientation and the list goes on Therefore we might tend to be unjustifiably suspicious of and threatened by someone with a Middle Eastern name or even by a 6 6 young black man simply out for a nighttime jog around the neighborhood On a personal level the way my sixth grade friends failed to see me is the same way that marginalized groups are not seen on a daily basis For me it is simply a matter of asserting the importance of exposure to diverse experiences and recognizing the value therein I will be attending the University of Chicago to play basketball and study economics and international business as these areas of study embody the same principles that I thrive on social interaction serving others and global awareness So to my Class of 2017 in order to help affect change in our global community it is our obligation to help create global unity by understanding the cultures and backgrounds of others My experience at my former school did change me but it also piqued an awareness of others that has broadened thanks to my time at Woodward It is my goal to challenge people to take the protection of every human s rights personally and empower those who feel as if they are not seen I can honestly say that choosing to come to this school was one of the best decisions I have ever made The relationships garnered in a short span of two years have been genuine and I am confident will be lifelong Once we leave the walls of the Academy each of us will be prepared to enter a 21st century global community Business is no longer being done from coast to coast rather continent to continent And as Woodward alumni we will be able to navigate these differences with ease So as I conclude President Gulley s words ring true I do feel as if my experience here has been unexpected and truly transformative As we transition from high school to college we will all encounter unexpected events It is a matter of how we react to and learn from these events that show us who we shall become So I implore you to reject apathy and ignorance and join me as we explore what s going on in the rest of our world Learn from others Question theories and laws Challenge yourself and enjoy every minute of difficulty Don t be afraid to step into an unexpected circumstance because you never know it may transform you into an agent that can change the world

SUCCESS BEYOND WOODWARD GMA Graduate Brings People Together Few can say they re leading a life as full creative and downright fun as 1952 GMA alumnus Jim Haynes From Morocco Moscow and Istanbul to London Edinburgh Dublin and everywhere in between Jim has been a part of the arts scene across Europe since the 1960s And by arts we mean all of them film theater visual art performance music culinary culture you name it Jim makes a habit of not only attending arts festivals across Europe in 2016 he celebrated his 60th visit to the annual Edinburgh Festival but also contributing to the scene He is the author of several books has written produced and performed countless plays runs a small Paris based kitchen table literary publishing 52 WOODWA R D M AGA ZINE SUMME R 2017 house is the subject of two recent films and perhaps most emblematically was recently a living breathing art installation in the Victoria Albert Museum exhibition London in the 60s But none of this is what Jim is most famous for For the past 40 years Jim has hosted 60 to 75 people in his home every Sunday night in his international supper club A rotating roster of volunteer chefs cook every cuisine imaginable and with just an advanced reservation and a suggested donation you too can join in the fun Smells wafting in from the kitchen music playing wine bottles popping suddenly you re having dinner with 60 new friends from all around the world And that s not an overstatement Jim s parties have spurred lifelong friendships artistic collaborations international romances marriages and ultimately even
babies These kinds of connections were always the goal of the dinner party project for Jim who makes a point to memorize every single person s name before they arrive Jim shows a similar commitment to human connection in the many travel books he s written which highlight not museums hotels or restaurants but instead introduce the reader to 1 000 individuals who live work play in the villages towns and cities of the country Jim s mission is to bring people together whether for a brief dazzling conversation or a lifelong partnership At an estimated 140 000 visitors over the years Jim s guests hail from every corner of the earth and represent every niche of humanity the name of the game is eclecticism As Jim put it in a 2012 profile for the New York Times Tolerance can lead to respect and finally to love No one can ever really understand anyone else but you can love them or at least accept them If the international supper club and arts scene feels a far cry from 1950s GMA it appears perfectly fitting given Jim s experience at the Academy Jim describes himself during his GMA years as active in the literary activities of the school but slipped out and went over the wall at every opportunity Often caught and forced to spend free time walking around the bullring As hindsight often puts one s youth in perspective it seems even at GMA Jim was on his way to a life brimming with conversation rich in art and rebellious in intellect Forty years into uniting diverse groups Jim Haynes right at GMA through delicious food wildly good times art and shared humanity Jim s life s work is much more than a lot of dinner parties it s a model for being a truly compassionate global citizen A Sunday dinner at Jim s place WOODWA R D E D U A LU M NI 53

SUCCESS BEYOND WOODWARD Getting on the SmartPath In 2010 by the time the economic recession was in full swing people all around the country were feeling it Among the many factors that created such economic decline Alok Deshpande 94 saw a gap in knowledge around personal finance and wondered if he could help to remedy it Alok certainly had the credentials to assist people with their financial planning decisions After graduating from Woodward in 1994 he went on to Emory then proceeded to Harvard Business School before starting a job in financial advising at Bain and Company But Alok also had the desire to help people and the ability to translate complex financial knowledge into accessible terms In short he had the mentality of a great teacher So that s just what he became Alok began holding financial education sessions that were free and open to the public In the years before the very recent boom in personal financial wellness Alok s financial education seminars were unique and provided people with the tools they desperately needed to make smart financial decisions Most people were only getting financial advice from someone who was trying to sell them a product I really wanted to teach people says Alok As his reputation spread Alok started receiving invitations to give talks and lead training sessions for companies employees In 2015 after years of teaching he published his book Fuel The Most Important Number in Your Financial Life and launched his company SmartPath Financial Education Ever in line with the zeitgeist Alok and his company have been steadily expanding as individual and company financial wellness programs become more and more popular SmartPath s goals are as Alok describes them to one give people the tools to execute the financial system we teach and two give people someone to talk to a real human to advise you instead of automation While a budgeting app and a financial concierge service are most pressing on SmartPath s current agenda Alok s Alok Deshpande is an Alumni Board Member and new Woodward parent long term vision involves a shift in the banking industry s mindset Given the fact that big banks so often prey on the average consumer s financial ignorance If we have people using financial concierge services the same way you have a gym membership a doctor or a nutritionist then banks will have to adjust and be more transparent They will be selling to the concierge s knowledge base instead of the individual consumer My goal is that you never make a financial decision alone Woodward just does such an unbelievable job at giving you the fundamentals like math and writing Alok Deshpande 94 As SmartPath continues to expand Alok spends his time developing new client prospects and working on their digital products but he still devotes much of his energy to the hands on business of teaching financial wellness Looking back he credits Woodward with laying the groundwork for his success Woodward just does such an unbelievable job at giving you the fundamentals like math and writing Alok said He describes his success as starting with those two core skills numbers and being able to communicate effectively While he jokes about being torn apart in writing classes in the Upper School he wouldn t trade those experiences adding all of the credit goes to Woodward WOODWA R D E D U A LU M NI 57

SUCCESS BEYOND WOODWARD Alumna Lives Woodward s Service Ethos Every Day Rebecca Vallas is a 2002 alumna who embodies Woodward s commitment to service After she was named a Forbes 30 under 30 in law and policy in 2011 and 2014 respectively Rebecca joined The Center for American Progress in 2014 as managing director of its Poverty to Prosperity program How did you get interested in helping low income Americans Little did she know her beloved theatre classes at Woodward were preparing her for a job in which she speaks to the media and interviews politicians and other thought leaders almost every day She also could not have foreseen that her Woodward education was setting her up for a lifetime of academically rigorous advocacy work Today Rebecca leads a fast paced life in D C where she s on the frontlines of the biggest issues in our country She was gracious enough to fit a few of our questions into her busy schedule Can you tell us about the Poverty to Prosperity program and describe your role The Center for American Progress is a nonpartisan think action tank that seeks to advance progressive policies and ideas Our Poverty to Prosperity Program focuses on developing analyzing and advancing policies to cut poverty and expand opportunity like raising the minimum wage ensuring paid family and medical leave second chance policies to ensure that a minor criminal record isn t a life sentence to poverty policies to give workers with disabilities a fair shot at employment and more We also analyze and seek to stop proposals that would worsen poverty and inequality and make it harder for struggling families to get ahead which is the lion s share of what we re doing right now with healthcare housing nutrition assistance and more facing unprecedented threats I serve as the team s managing director Before I came to D C I spent several years as a civil legal aid attorney in Philadelphia The experience of working directly with low income individuals and communities and learning from some of the best poverty lawyers in the country continues to underpin my work and how I see the world One of the central lessons I took with me was how misunderstood poverty and poor people are in this country Media coverage of poverty is a big part of this Most of the time poverty is cast in terms of us and them as though the poor are some stagnant class of 13 to 14 percent of the population living below the poverty line year in and year out and who struggle financially because of laziness or bad decisions Rather economic hardship is a widespread experience with fully one in three Americans struggling to make ends meet living paycheck to paycheck or worse Meanwhile half of Americans will experience at least a year of poverty or teetering on the financial brink at some point during their working years Add in unemployment or needing to turn to the safety net and that number rises to four in five Americans As staggering a number as this is it comes as less of a shock when you consider that the three leading causes of poverty in the U S are job loss or cutback in hours disability illness and birth of a child all commonplace experiences that could happen to anyone Continued on next page WOODWA R D E D U A LU M NI 59
Rebecca Vallas continued from page 59 How one views the cause of a problem inevitably shapes what they ll see as the solution That s why pushing back on myths and stereotypes about poverty and elevating the voices of people struggling to provide for their families to help put a face on the reality of their circumstances is a big part of what my team seeks to do What do you like about your job Most days I feel like I won the job lottery I feel incredibly lucky to work with many of the nation s leading experts and advocates on issues ranging from economic policy to criminal justice immigration democracy LGBT rights climate environmental policy and more Plus I m part of a team of talented communications and political strategists My coworkers and staff are equal parts talented and passionate and I count several among my closest friends When people find out I work on poverty many assume it must be dark depressing work The truth is my colleagues and I may work on heavy issues but we really enjoy each other And particularly right now with so much under threat I feel so fortunate that this is my day job Is there something exciting that you re working on now One particularly fun experiment has been launching TalkPoverty org a progressive hub for poverty news and discussion which has since grown into the most widely read site on poverty in the U S with a popular blog that elevates the voices of advocates experts policymakers and people struggling to make ends meet who tell the real stories of poverty in America We also launched TalkPoverty Radio a weekly radio show podcast which I host The podcast has been an incredible experience bringing together many of my heroes including journalists such as Melissa Harris Perry formerly of MSNBC policymakers like Sen Sherrod Brown bestselling authors like Rebecca Traister All the Single Ladies comics such as Lizz Winstead co creator of The Daily Show and most importantly people struggling to make 60 WOODWA R D M AGA ZINE SUMME R 2017 ends meet who are fighting for policies that would enable them to get ahead In recognition of the unique political moment the show relaunched in February as Off Kilter with wider syndication and a greater focus on the resistance movement sweeping the country What s the most challenging aspect of your job Defense can be exhausting in any political climate But right now every day brings a new threat to our work It can be a challenge to stay positive when so many programs and policies that protect marginalized populations and help level the playing field are under threat including many that I and my colleagues fought to see enacted over the past few years That being said it s been incredibly energizing to watch the momentum growing every day to fight back against dangerous and divisive policies Physically and emotionally challenging though it may be at times I feel lucky to get to do this work right now Keeping the Affordable Care Act in place and preventing 24 million Americans from losing health insurance was a huge win earlier this month and a powerful reminder that our work is deeply important How has your time at Woodward informed your current role Academically Woodward prepared me better for college and law school than I ever could have anticipated at the time But in many ways my time in WA s theatre program was the best preparation for what I eventually went on to do helping me develop a strong comfort level with public speaking and media Music was another big part of my time at WA from choir to Camerata to the school s first all women s barbershop quartet I miss singing classically but singing remains an outlet for getting me out of the office thanks to Center for American Progress competitive karaoke team which proudly won 2nd place citywide last year
