Success Beyond Woodward Reflections on the Class of 2016 From Dr Chris Freer Upper School Principal Vice President and Dean for Student Life B aseball legend and Cy Young Award winner Vernon Law of the Pittsburgh Pirates once famously said Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first the lesson afterwards While this is not how traditional schooling goes in most classrooms it is often how life teaches us some of our most valuable lessons I would like to suggest that formal education can learn a lot from this notion and Woodward Academy strives to embrace these opportunities to learn from lived experiences More specifically we believe in the idea that you can learn from failure However society does not like to fail so perhaps the appropriate word is struggle We grow when we struggle We learn from facing adversity adapting and ultimately overcoming obstacles These challenges help us truly learn We are often taught and encouraged to embrace failure but why do we try to avoid it at all costs during high school This may seem like an odd way to reflect on the many successes of the Class of 2016 but it was through their struggles that our 245 seniors ultimately grew and learned There most certainly were individual challenges and struggles along the way in the classroom on the athletic field on the stage and even through character development This class also faced collective challenges during their four years in the Upper School This class was the last high school class to experience Brewster Hall before the opening of Jane Woodruff Hall They survived the construction period and the challenge of Cottage Park For the past two years they have enjoyed our new humanities building Despite having three different academic buildings in four years the Class of 2 WOODWARD AC ADEMY 2016 always moved forward Other significant changes that occurred during their Upper School careers included the introduction of a new drug testing policy and most recently the return of the formal dress uniform on a daily basis for the entire winter As I reflect on the many individual and collective successes of the Class of 2016 I can see the struggles and challenges that led to their triumphs We graduated 245 seniors and because of their hard work and perseverance they will matriculate to 106 different colleges and universities around the globe In addition seven of our seniors engaged in Independent Scientific Research ISR which is the highest number since the inception of our ISR program More than a dozen members of this class spent part of their summer participating in WAConnect a program designed to partner current students with alumni in a variety of professional fields Academically we had 19 seniors recognized by the National Merit Corporation 90 Honors graduates and 184 who earned Gold or Silver Eagle honor roll Our debate and math teams had exceptional years as did many of our visual and performing arts students Numerous seniors will continue their study of the arts in college next year All 24 of our varsity level athletic teams made the postseason and 27 seniors will compete in their respective sports next year in college None of these accomplishments were achieved without struggle I am perhaps most proud of the genuine love of learning they found during their struggles the educational experiences and teachable moments that instilled in them a desire to stretch their knowledge to think critically and to creatively approach problem solving These are the qualities of lifelong learners and it is the faculty and coaches at Woodward who have pushed our students to embrace this growth mindset More important than the books they have read or the degrees they will earn the true measure of a lifelong learner is an insatiable curiosity and a willingness to seek new challenges We are very proud of this Class of 2016 and we are confident that the lessons they have learned at Woodward Academy have prepared them well for both college and life Whether the test comes before or after the lesson they are ready to live a life of learning l DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE

Success Beyond Woodward Vinay Nandanampati continued from page 3 I was so blown away by the prospect of becoming part of a community and campus with so many distinct yet equally enthusiastic students and faculty Cornell s breathtaking campus and the school s spectacular connection to New York City were huge plusses as well I definitely see myself working in the corporate world in the city so the opportunity to go to a school that is so serene and beautiful and still have amazing connections to NYC was a unique and special opportunity Finally I chose Cornell because I was selected as a Meinig Family Cornell National Scholar awarded to 50 students out of all accepted students each year The scholarship will allow me to have unique networking opportunities which will definitely benefit me while I m at Cornell and after I graduate What are your hopes and dreams for the future My goal is to work within the intersection of government and technology and hopefully benefit and improve the lives of those less fortunate I am not exactly sure what this will entail but I know that I want to work with both the public and private sectors and harness technological innovations to benefit others Companies and organizations that interest me at the moment are the World Bank Toms Better World Books Warby Parker and other innovative social enterprises In what ways did Woodward prepare you for embarking on college and your future First Woodward gave me exposure to a diverse group of students and ideas Woodward s diversity is extremely unique at the high school level because there are truly so many different types of students represented on campus geographically socioeconomically politically etc I have had the treasured experience of getting to know many types of people and their different ideas and opinions before I even go to college Secondly Woodward s rigorous academics have definitely prepared me for college academics and the real world in general I know for a fact that Woodward has some of the hardest classes in the Atlanta area and it is not easy to get A s at Woodward The only way to be a successful student is to properly time manage and not slack off I know the persistence and hard work required from me will pay off What are your best memories of Woodward I have many amazing memories from Woodward some unique to me and some common to most students One of my personal best memories was being the president of the Model UN team We started our own MUN conference this year and we had more than 70 students participate We discussed global issues like aging populations and had a great time overall Being in charge of this operation was a unique and meaningful experience and it was definitely one of my best memories Also just getting to have lunch on the benches outside talking to my friends every day going to football games and cheering for the team are times that I will not forget McKinley Paul Where are you going to college and what do you plan to study I m going to Northwestern University and plan on majoring in materials science and engineering I was invited to be a Murphy s Scholar in the School of Engineering Why did you select your college I picked Northwestern for a lot of reasons Lake Michigan Chicago Big 10 sports and a good number of students However what really sold it for me was the amazing Materials Science department combined with what seems like a very healthy social scene What are your hopes and dreams for the future I don t really have any specific goals like winning a Nobel Prize or anything I think in the future I just want to work on interesting problems day in and day out while making a good living 4 WOODWARD AC ADEMY DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE

In what ways did Woodward prepare you for embarking on college and your future I feel extremely prepared academically for college not only in terms of coursework but also just in terms of my general writing thinking and studying skills I also think I ll be able to balance my cocurriculars really well after juggling so much during high school What are your best memories of Woodward I have a lot of great memories from Woodward Many of them take place just sitting around during lunch with some friends in the old lounge or West Commons Some other highlights are Peer Day freshmen year being in the crowd when we beat St Pius this year in football Rip Day and many many more Morgan Watson Where are you going to college and what do you plan to study I ll be attending the Rhode Island School of Design RISD and I hope to attain a foundation for fine arts in subjects such as graphic design screenplay costume design textiles etc Why did you select your college At first I was extremely against the idea of art school I think it was because I was afraid that if I went and did not become a successful artist I would fail at something I love But when touring all nine of my other colleges I walked out of their art departments with the same nagging feeling I couldn t help but feel disappointed by comparing each school to the wealth of resources and opportunities that were available to me at RISD So in short I selected my school by touring my other options and knowing that I needed to be at RISD What are your hopes and dreams for the future I hope to incorporate fine arts in whichever career I pursue I don t want to be an independent artist who only sells her work but rather pursue something that I can combine with other areas For example I would love to lead a team in wardrobe design for time period fantasy shows and movies such as Downton Abbey or Game of Thrones In this way I can contribute to society through my role in popular media while still doing something I love In what ways did Woodward prepare you for embarking on college and your future One of the reasons I chose Woodward after fifth grade is because of the art program I can tell you right now that after visiting many colleges and their art departments Woodward has significantly better resources and instructors than some of the most renowned universities in the United States Woodward gave me the resources to be the artist I am today and the confidence to pursue a career in art which is something that terrified me for the longest time What are your best memories of Woodward The Senior Art Show to me felt like more of a graduation than anything else Being on the winning state team for the Lady War Eagles Swimming and Diving program is another cherished memory of mine Painting my friends and classmates skirts and pants for Rip Day was a recent task of mine but I know I will look back on it warmly More Senior Showcase on next page WOODWARD EDU SUMMER 2016 5

Haley Hasen 15 Where are you attending college and what are you majoring in Haley I currently attend the University of Arizona and I am getting a B F A in photography Do you feel that Woodward prepared you well for college In what ways a 3 5 GPA including an A in English For the first time in my life I was getting A s on writing assignments and I knew that all of the credit went to Woodward During my junior and senior years I took College Prep English and Writer s Workshop with Ms Zents and Mr Hamling The two of them were 100 percent committed to improving my writing abilities and never gave up on me They continually checked and rechecked drafts of my writing assignments They taught me how to organize my thoughts and make sure that my response completely answered the question that was being asked I used all of these skills and strategies during my freshman year of college and received constant praise from my teachers on my writing assignments and term research papers My success at college is directly related to the education I received at Woodward I went in scared that I would not be able to handle college but came out of it feeling great about myself and Woodward Haley While I was at Woodward I did not truly appreciate the incredible education I was getting I knew it was good but I had nothing to measure it against When I arrived at the University of Arizona I was afraid that college level classes would be impossible I discovered that Woodward had more than prepared me for college I finished my first year with How did Woodward help you to discover your unique interests and develop them Haley A few years before I began attending Woodward my parents discovered that I had dyslexia and a language processing disorder These learning challenges made it very difficult for me to articulate my feelings through the use of words Although I was able to learn strategies over the years to help me with school I still struggled to find a way to express myself In 10th grade I met Mr Greenway the head of Woodward s Art Department and he introduced me to film photography in Photography I Learning how to take and develop pictures opened an entire new world for me Instead of needing to use words I was able to voice my feeling through my pictures I spent three years with Mr Greenway and through those years he constantly challenged me to find new ways to express myself through my photography I cannot imagine what my life would have been like if I had never taken that first photography class Mr Greenway was not only my teacher but also my mentor continually pushing me to see the magic through my photography lens and more importantly find creative ways to make pictures He changed my life and I will forever be grateful that I was fortunate to have him as a teacher What are your plans for the future Haley My plan for the future is to become a fine arts photographer Photography by Haley Hasen More Young Alumni on next page WOODWARD EDU SUMMER 2016 11

Giving Back Parent Participation Rises at Lower and Primary Schools T hanks to the principals and parents at the Primary and Lower Schools and the spirit of competition challenges to increase parent participation in The Woodward Fund at both schools were a success this spring Initially the Primary School announced a parent participation drive leading up to Big Night Out the annual community gathering Parent volunteers contacted other parents to rally support and Principal Eric Mitchell offered incentives such as an out of uniform day Although the percentage increased dramatically to 42 percent from 24 percent over a two week period the initial effort unfortunately fell short of its goal of increasing participation to 50 percent Next Principal Andy Phillips at the Lower School extended a similar challenge to parents of fourth through sixth graders Two weeks later the Lower School reached its goal of 50 percent participation and students enjoyed an out of uniform day This is where the spirit of competition came into play Principal Mitchell at the Primary School went back to his parents and challenged them to catch up to the Lower School In this second push the Primary parents answered This fun school based challenge succeeded thanks to the efforts of our principals and to the parents who rallied the call and surpassed 50 percent As promised students enjoyed an out ofuniform day as a result This fun school based challenge succeeded thanks to the efforts of our principals and to the parents who rallied said Director of Advancement Claire Hegarty We re so appreciative and we re pleased because higher parent participation will encourage support from foundations Every gift counts in reaching the annual goals of The Woodward Fund When the fiscal year ended on May 31 The Woodward Fund had surpassed its goal and raised 1 888 080 in support of academics cocurricular activities and student financial aid l Claire Hegarty Director of Advancement Wise Guidance Breakout EDU in the Primary School Primary School students engaged in Breakout EDU an exciting new activity that teaches teamwork problem solving and critical thinking Technology Specialist Ryan Heming Media Specialist Amy Walker and classroom teachers worked together to create challenges in which students worked together and raced against the clock to solve puzzles to find hidden keys that unlock boxes around the classroom The challenges incorporated a range of subject matter and engage students math and reading skills as well as their natural drive to problem solve l 22 WOODWARD AC ADEMY DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE

Wise Guidance Upper Primary Students Collaborate in Innovative Learning on Safe Drinking Water U pper School students in Environmental Science classes taught by Lindsay Reid and Monica Kuhlman examined the Flint Michigan drinking water crisis and then worked with first graders in Leslie Byars class at the Primary School in a collaborative project to understand the crisis as well as circumstances like poverty and how activism can play a role in improving conditions The Upper School teachers used dynamic learning which engages students in service learning problem based learning and design thinking The service learning aspect of the class was completed with collaboration from Ms Byars first graders The older students crafted a lesson plan to explain the water crisis to the first graders For example one of the lessons included a relay where first graders pushed cases of bottled water to give them an idea of its weight and learned about how Flint citizens had to carry clean water home for all their needs Because they wanted to somehow help the Flint citizens the students decided to write letters of encouragement Ms Kuhlman reached out to the United Way of Genessee County and the agency identified a first grade classroom at Potter Elementary in Flint to receive the letters Collaboration between grade levels builds connection and community Mrs Byars said First graders were able to gain empathy and serve others with the guidance of Upper School role models and they were able make a difference in a real world crisis Mrs Kulhman adds that Upper School students learned valuable leadership skills The hands on service based learning model develops the empathy and problem solving skills necessary for 21st century citizens The students repeatedly stated that they felt more confident and empowered to make a real impact in the world I look forward to future collaboration opportunities as we equip our students with the skills to be true change makers l Making Prosthetic Hands in the Middle School Mesa Davis s seventh grade life science class designed prosthetic hands for a unit on skeletal and muscular systems They were assigned the task of designing their hands and were allowed to re engineer or modify the hand in any way as long as they maintained the basic integrity of the structure The class held a competition to test design quality Students had to use their hands to pick up pieces of paper that got progressively smaller Ties were broken using cotton seeds and beads One student Vincent Panuzio engineered his hand to include motors and a switch truly a bionic hand l WOODWARD EDU SUMMER 2016 23

Following is the 2016 Commencement Address given by Kathryn Elizabeth Warren The Things We ll Take With Us T oday is a time for well deserved joyous celebration as we the Class of 2016 graduate and go forth with great strides toward the next chapter of our lives As my fellow peers and I feverishly await our futures I can t help but also reflect upon our past As classmates became our close friends teachers transformed into our role models and the campus earned the title of our second home we also have made an even greater transformation We are who we are today because of our long journey through the many years of Woodward Academy and I m proud to say that I stand before you all today as a changed matured individual because of the Woodward community Now as I said we seniors are anxious to move on and for the Class of 2016 packing season is upon us We ve already packed up our lockers and unloaded our backpacks and now we re on to the bigger challenge packing for college There are many important decisions to make such as what exactly we re going to pack and leave behind While we ll be sure to have the basic college essentials we ll also have to remember to pack the subjective lifelong lessons and moments we have gathered along the way I d like to share with you all the several lessons that Woodward has taught us ones that I ll be sure to find room for in my suitcase when I pack for college and beyond Number One Be selfless and grateful We re incredibly lucky to have such an abundance of amazing opportunities because of this institution Whether it s the phenomenal teachers or the smaller details such as the always impeccably trimmed WOODWARD EDU landscapes we are beyond fortunate to experience this unique school Because of these endless opportunities we ve learned to give back to show our gratitude through acts of service on and off campus Number Two There are many different types of leaders Woodward has shown us through different examples that a leader is not always the star of the show He or she also can be introspective and subtle while efficiently getting the job done We all have a certain type of leader within ourselves and through this journey and the occasional obstacles we face we have allowed our specific inner leader qualities to shine through That being said we ve also come to realize that it s OK to not always be the leader An efficient group dynamic relies on multiple types of roles Number Three There is no shame in not knowing No one can ever know it all As we ve experienced trial and error in certain subjects we now know to remind ourselves that it s perfectly OK to not automatically grasp an idea We ve realized that extra effort can carry us further than we imagine Number Four If it s chicken wings for lunch and you re not a fan of them do yourself a favor and move out of the way to allow the stampede to pass As a freshman I made the terrible mistake of getting in the way of hungry senior boys Let s just say that I never made that miscalculation again On the topic of food if you promise high school students free pizza at your event they will come Number Five Surround yourself with people who will support you and stand by you You ve already done this here at Woodward by finding and cementing close bonds In our new surroundings next year continue to choose wisely and carefully with whom you spend your days Today as we sit next to our peers I hope you can all be proud of the wonderful friends you ve made along the way The seemingly insignificant events such as the long car rides spent with your friends and the conversations with each other about everything and nothing are the moments worth cherishing Number Six Take pride in what you do and when you find your passion strive to always apply the maximum effort As we go along with our habitual routines such as participating in a club or playing on a sports team we ll look back and see that our lives are constructed of these little memories From the football player s last minute under those gleaming Friday night lights to the violinist performing the final piece of sheet music Woodward has taught us to take in every moment to the fullest because as Kurt Vonnegut once said You ll look back and realize they were the big things So in moving forward maintain this level of passion and zeal in creating your next memory Number Seven The carousel never stops Life is full of ups and downs in the process of this endless rotation When the world seems to be throwing only bad events your way we ve been told to remember that better days are always on the way Remember to carry on proudly and remind yourself that if it s not OK it s not the end SUMMER 2016 27

The Things We ll Take With Us by Kathryn Elizabeth Warren continued from page 27 And finally now that we ve remembered to be gracious to be passionate to be positive to find the right path with the right people we must remember to pack one more important precept Number Eight People who are trying to change the world never apologize We have all studied countless historical figures and trailblazers and seen that they never said sorry for taking risks in order to better the world Making a difference and taking a stand against the norm is never easy however Woodward has prepared us to take the leap If there is one particular message that Woodward has taught me it is that I should never apologize for striving for my goal We can do anything we put our minds to and I ask my peers to always remember this as we go forth and chase our own goals and dreams for the future As the time draws near for us to officially mark the end of this chapter I ask you all to pause for a moment of reflection to take in all we have learned and experienced together Weeks months or even years from now as we find ourselves in foreign places surrounded by unfamiliar faces we can take comfort in the fact that the lessons and values we have gained at Woodward and from our families are safely stored away in our suitcases and always there to remind us of where we come from and guide us toward where we re headed Thank you to my endlessly supportive family my wonderful friends and the incredible faculty for everything you have all done throughout this experience To my fellow members of the Class of 2016 here s to all the many memories Let s pick up our suitcases make sure they re zipped shut and go forward with exuberance and courage Promise to hold on tight and never let go l 28 WOODWARD AC ADEMY Following is the Senior Banquet speech delivered by Senior Class President Madison Virginia McGarrah Building Our Futures I am looking forward to attending Berry College in the fall as I am sure most of you are excited to get to the college of your choice As much as we want to fast forward through these next two months to begin our next chapter let s take this night to reminisce about our past I would like to mention something we have all probably shared in our past Seniors I would like to know who had a set of Lincoln Logs or Legos as a kid Well it seems that for many of us this is where our future all began learning how to build something out of countless pieces into a beautiful masterpiece Yes we all probably started with basically the same box of Legos however each of us created different structures Often we could not finish a project in one day or we maybe wanted to add more to it the following day Our parents often provided us with our own special place to put our Legos to continue later In our own space we had a foundation to begin anew if we wanted or to add on the next day Perhaps you can see where I m going with this metaphor Our parents grandparents or aunts and uncles have provided us with the materials to construct our futures This includes love faith education and most importantly the safe foundation of our homes and our school The construction site for many of us including Vintage Eagles was on Main Campus or at Woodward North The foundation provided by this great institution introduced us to a diverse family outside our home Our architecture was a little shaky at first Some of us late birds joined the process in the Middle School We asked ourselves do we make new friends to help build our new floors or do we join a sports team or other activity to add another level All of these questions influenced how we drew our plans for our Middle School years Major obstacles in this construction zone included Mr Dietz s science class or staying late in tutorial with Mrs Wade to repair a failed quiz And of course many of us had to pass inspection by the project manager at the end of the hall Coach McGarrah my dad With the endless homework and our first introduction to exams the two years there felt like they would never come to a close Day one of freshman year we stood confidently on our foundation made in Middle School Now all we had to do was figure out how to build on our already solid foundation which required an ability to adapt Adjusting to a new schedule and dealing with rain soaked lockers were our first obstacles We all passed with flying colors showing up to class on time and turning in assignments Although high school had just begun the pressure began to build as grades mattered for college Mrs Sherry Boynton stood by our side to help us with class schedules and keep us on track Every Friday we had the opportunity to relax and hang DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE

Success Beyond Woodward Woodward Alumna Publishes First Novel at 25 By Sandra Pounds Slider 75 A nyone who knew Roshani Chokshi 09 as a student would expect great things from this highly motivated young lady but even her most ardent supporters would be amazed at the speed of her success as a published author At barely 25 Roshani could easily pass for a heroine in a teen fantasy novel Instead this dark haired beauty toiled endlessly to complete her own fantasy novel and with a tenacious spirit and fierce determination she navigated the labyrinth of the printing world to publish The Star Touched Queen which reached No 4 on the New York Times Best Sellers list for young adult fiction With its foundation culled from mythology Roshani describes her book as a retelling of familiar stories set in a new world Roshani who graduated from Emory University in 2013 began writing as a preteen Woodward had the best library ever she recalls I remember the one in the Lower School They had shelves of mythology and I would check out all of them The reading curriculum was fun and it was taught in a way that was accessible It really gave me the foundation for writing Roshani began her love affair with mythology long before her days in the Lower School She is a perfect blend of her parents Indian and Filipino heritage and Roshani suggests that her love of mythology stems from that background My mom and dad gave me original versions of Grimms Fairy Tales Hans Christian Andersen all of Andrew Lang fairy tales and world mythology because they didn t teach me either of their languages I needed world fairy tales as a way for me to get in touch with both sides of my heritage In Middle School Roshani s writing style blossomed Ms Dee Koscik changed everything She was the first one who believed in me In Upper School Roshani was a fixture in the student publications office and served as editor of the Blade newspaper and the Silent Voices literary magazine I loved the newspaper and the literary magazine and the publications office felt like the heart of the school in many ways Roshani believes that her Woodward education not only provided a strong foundation but also truly fanned the flames of her passion and skills for storytelling In Scott Crook s English class her imagination was captured by a quote from Milton s Paradise Lost I would rather reign in hell than serve in heaven as well as class discussion about the myth of Hades and Persephone the young woman dragged to the Underworld I wanted to write a heroine who felt very familiar to me in the context of fairy tales and stories that would be familiar to anyone and condemned to spend half a year in hell after eating six pomegranate seeds Coach Crook pushed the question of who Persephone was What if she didn t want to return above ground What if she was very excited about being queen of the Underworld said Roshani The class made her think about the kind of girl who would choose something that is seen as so dark and say that it is powerful instead While Star Touched Queen connects to several stories from mythology it also reflects Roshani s hopes to see more diversity in young adult fiction I never really saw any stories with people who looked like me or anyone in my family she says I wanted to write a heroine who felt very familiar to me in the context of fairy tales and stories that would be familiar to anyone Star Touched Queen is not very original It s Beauty and the Beast but I ll bet you haven t seen it in that setting The tale of 17 year old Maya and her cursed horoscope begins amid the sumptuous streets of India but quickly crosses into magical bazaars Roshani Chokshi 09 44 WOODWARD AC ADEMY DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE

My dad always says that you can t control the actions that affect your life but you can always control your reactions I would hope that is what readers take away from the book Roshani Chokshi 09 where buyers might purchase dreams or a garland of nightmares Although the book is categorized as young adult fantasy its message appeals to readers of any age I think that the main theme of the book is how to interpret the things that happen to you My dad always says that you can t control the actions that affect your life but you can always control your reactions I would hope that is what readers take away from the book It s about self affirmation You have to believe in yourself first before anyone else will do that for you The idea for the book started during Roshani s undergraduate classes at Emory She wrote her senior thesis on 14th century Breton lais recitations or songs that included supernatural elements mythology and Celtic themes of faeries and enchantment In her thesis she traced the origins of three tales in Medieval literature to their Celtic inspiration and then all the way back to their Greco Roman roots It was one of the things that got me thinking about how we are just telling the same stories over and over again Roshani said Between her Emory graduation and the start of law school at the University of Georgia Roshani put the finishing touches on the book After numerous rewrites and more To learn more about Roshani and her books visit www roshanichokshi com The Star Touched Queen is available at bookstores and online WOODWARD EDU than 300 queries to potential literary agents she remained confident I got a rejection from an agent The notes in her rejection were so nice that I thought maybe you didn t really hate it so I asked her if I took her notes and revised it could I send it to her again Just three weeks later Roshani received an offer of representation from Thao Le of the Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency which represents authors such as Amy Tan Maxine Hong Kingston and Lisa See Working with her agent Roshani continued to revise her novel and then began the process of submitting the manuscript to publishing houses Over six months I got more than 20 rejections I took a good long look at my manuscript and at those rejections and decided I needed to change it all over again so I rewrote the book in February 2015 When we had the revised story some magic must have happened because a month later on March 18 we had an offer from St Martin s Press and a couple of other publishers Then I had a book deal But the editorial process doesn t end there Once you sell and once you sign the contract it s not in your hands at all You start the rewrites all over again Roshani feels one of the most important pieces of advice she has heard came from Neil Gaiman who said write things and finish them Her writing routine which generally takes place while wearing pajamas involves two hour time slots during which she puts her phone on do not disturb turns off everything on her computer screen except her document and focuses I put on my noise canceling headphones I write I think the important part about those two hours is never to self edit I don t reread the paragraph Once it s done once I hit period that s it When I am writing I also take time out of the day to read other stuff She encourages writers to read books that make you itch to write If you read something and you don t have a pen and paper beside you and it makes you furious then you know you have found one of those books that you just return to over and over Her favorite authors include Laini Taylor Catherynne Valente and Vladimir Nabokov to name a few I love authors who spend a lot of time on the sentence level and I love authors who spend a good deal of time on their world building An as yet untitled companion book to The Star Touched Queen is set to be released in spring 2017 It s about a very dangerous otherworldly tournament Roshani also is working on a heist story that takes place in Paris during La Belle Epoque which means the beautiful year It s a time period when the world was holding its breath and everything was glamorous before the terrors of World War I It feels like an otherworldly time Although set in Paris this novel draws on her Filipino roots with connections to the Spanish colonization of the Philippines l About the author Former Director of Student Publications Sandra Pounds Slider 75 who retired from Woodward Academy after 32 years taught and advised thousands of students including Roshani Chokshi 09 SUMMER 2016 45
