Reflections on the Class of 2015 By Dr Chris Freer Vice President and Dean for Student Life Upper School Principal In the summer weeks since the end of the 2014 2015 school year I ve spent time reflecting on the 260 seniors in the Class of 2015 I must confess that much of this reflection occurred during a 3 000 mile road trip up the East Coast across 11 states over 17 days with my wife and three sons loaded into a minivan While I sat behind the wheel playing the role of Clark Griswold my wife was often serving as referee between the boys I n fairness the boys did a great job considering the duration and confinement of our journey But this concept of fairness is a work in progress for our youngest son a recent graduate of Woodward s kindergarten My son is not alone in struggling to learn this life lesson in our car and certainly in the world we live in today Indeed many adults wrestle with the dilemma of equal versus equitable So while I heard countless times during the trip the exclamation that s not fair I could not help but think of the Class of 2015 As I worked to teach my boys the Organized by the senior members of Woodward Serves the class engaged in projects to help such organizations as Easter Seals Gateway Shelter Action Ministries and the Atlanta Community Food Bank s Urban Market Community Garden Seniors took part in a wide range of activities from serving meals and organizing supplies for the homeless to making crafts with and reading to elementary school children The servant leadership of the Class of 2015 stretched beyond the Woodward campus The class had a positive impact throughout the city of Atlanta and across the globe Through Woodward Serves our school once again engaged in projects benefiting the Boys Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta Atlanta Community Food Bank Habitat for Humanity Horizons and our sister school in Zambia the Terranova School With the seniors leading the way Woodward students of all ages committed their time talents and tithe to helping these missions and communities In addition to community service the Class of 2015 was instrumental in helping to foster an inclusive community on our campus Through events like the annual Week of Understanding continued on next page Summer 2015 Ellie Pryor distinction between what is fair and what is right it occurred to me that our senior class embodied this concept and served as a positive example of doing what is right even when there was no immediate or obvious gratification The most salient example of the selfless leadership of these seniors was their decision to incorporate a service component into their senior week activities As long as I have been at Woodward there has been a tradition of senior week when seniors celebrate their upcoming graduation Senior week typically involves themed out of uniform days such as college day or decades day and ends with the annual Spring Fling and Last Blast events On the Wednesday we traditionally have a senior Activity Day that involves loading the entire class onto buses and traveling to a local amusement center for a day of bowling laser tag pizza and fellowship The focus of the week has always been about honoring our seniors This year however the seniors decided to include a service project on the morning of their Activity Day Five buses departed in five different directions and the senior class spent the morning serving others on what has traditionally been solely a day of fun 5
continued from page 5 Woodward Academy and programs like No Place for Hate the seniors modeled the commitment to deep respect for difference Our senior class displayed the personal and social responsibility that we aspire to instill in all of our graduates Woodward Academy is rich in traditions from its founding in 1900 to this year s Class of 2015 Over the decades new traditions have begun while others have faded away This class was the first senior class to enjoy our new humanities building It was the first class to celebrate its last day in uniforms at the new magnolia tree and through thoughtful leadership negotiated the preservation of the rip day tradition that included improvements for the betterment of the school As I reflect on the many achievements and varied talents of the Class of 2015 it is the character to do what is right and not just what is popular or fair that will be their legacy and serve them well in college and throughout life In his book The Road to Character author David Brooks explains that character is not innate or automatic You have to build it with effort and artistry The Class of 2015 includes 260 seniors who will attend 113 different colleges or universities in 33 different states Whether they were one of our 59 Vintage Eagles or joined our community more recently there is no doubt this class has developed strong character Fortunately my boys still have a little time to continue to learn this critical life lesson and I am confident that like the Class of 2015 Woodward will provide them with many opportunities to build excellent character to use the words of our motto 6 Class President Reflects on Change Following are excerpts from a speech by Molly Paradies 15 given at the senior banquet I want to thank the seniors for allowing me to serve as your class president Congratulations to the Class of 2015 and all of our families and friends In our time at Woodward we have seen a lot of change some of this change has been external and some has been internal We are the first class to lead our peers into Woodruff Hall I see a strong parallel between the different personalities in our class and how we grew together and the various components of this new building and how it came together As freshmen entering the high school campus for the first time we spent our mornings in Brewster the building Woodruff Hall replaced Brewster s courtyard is where we would begin our days before our hectic schedules took us to the bus for the St Pius baseball game auditions for Hairspray or last minute study sessions Brewster Hall left us with some of the most precious memories of our freshman year In the same way that we outgrew Brewster we outgrew our freshman selves Woodruff Hall has been the perfect setting for this growth in many ways the new building has mirrored our development as a class We still have the same characters only now they are more polished and vibrant much like the new facade of Woodruff Hall which shares the architectural elements of Brewster Our interests thoughts and ambitions have developed changing dramatically much like the interiors of the two buildings We each have found our niche within our class something that each of us does that makes us unique among the sea of 260 black and red polos Woodward has given us a place to pursue and nurture our special interests We also have taken enormous strides together as a class Together as seniors we coped with change by taking initiative and accepting that we must alter some of our Woodward traditions and make our own in order to fit into our new campus On Rip Day we charged out of our final classes to our new tree to celebrate our last day in uniform by tearing off our red and black polos and throwing them onto the tree I am glad to report that we heeded Dr Freer s advice no one tried to climb onto its thin branches The tree is still standing in one piece for next year s seniors to continue the tradition and for the seniors that follow after them to do the same Next year we will all be in different places where we will have to adapt to our new surroundings In our time here we have matured and developed in preparation for college through the friendships that we have formed and the goals we have accomplished of course with the help of our incredible faculty and resources Although we venture toward different directions from Washington D C to Austin to Taiwan we will always remember Rugby Avenue value our final steps down from Richardson and find our new versions of Brewster and Woodruff Hall Molly Paradies will enroll at Middlebury College in the fall
Full of Light and Promise Graduation Reflections on Woodward Academy The following are excerpted remarks from the commencement speech given by Allison Gordon 15 L ooking out at all of you today I wish there were a word to describe how it feels to be leaving the home we have built It seems impossible to fully express our appreciation for the foundation we were provided and the values instilled within us When crafting this speech I found myself on a daunting mission searching for that one all encompassing word The word that would capture Woodward s core values of Excellence Character and Opportunity One afternoon it hit me Excellence Character Opportunity E C O Echo These three values are like an echo resounding in my being a constant guide that will help me through life s difficulties and remind me of home No matter where the next few years lead us we can always find comfort in the shared echo of this wonderful community of Woodward alumni Excellence The first part of Woodward s echo can be heard in its unwavering commitment to excellence John Keats best summarized my Woodward education when he wrote that education is not the filling of a bucket but the lighting of a fire My classes sparked curiosity wonder and a desire to go out and discover the world for myself Woodward teaches us that a good education is essential for success no matter the path we follow The tools for excellence we were given here have shaped our minds and transformed us into critical thinkers Character Woodward forges our character in a crucible of expectation From the beginning our teachers and coaches have expected the best from us They have made us accountable for our own decisions When considering my own moral compass I trace my ability to differentiate right and wrong back to lessons learned from my family my faith community and most significantly Woodward Academy Sometimes our changing world can be divisive and partisan At Woodward our administration consistently challenges us to be better and more tolerant We do not shy away from our differences On the contrary we are encouraged to embrace each member of our community Woodward never imposed a rhetoric on me instead I was introduced to a myriad of issues and opinions that informed my worldview As we go out into the world we will be confronted with situations and challenges that test our character At these times the moral strength that Woodward has instilled within us will echo and help us maintain our integrity and resolve Opportunity Having attended public high schools in small towns my parents always stressed to me how lucky I was to go to a school with the resources of Woodward They believed in Woodward so much that they moved my two sisters and me to Summer 2015 Allison Gordon will attend Brown University in the fall see Senior Spotlight on page 19 College Park Mom and Dad thank you so much for giving me the Woodward Academy opportunity Thank you for exposing me to all kinds of people with all kinds of ideas and leanings Here at Woodward we are encouraged to explore our individual interests by creating new clubs and organizations We develop our talents on the stage in the painting studio and on the athletic field Our classmates are from 23 counties and there is a reason why Woodward s opportunities are nonpareil Because of the experiences we have been afforded each of us will continue to seek excitement in our lives We will not be afraid of new adventures because they will echo the life changing opportunities that Woodward has given us We are graduating We did it Class of 2015 We cry because today is so beautiful we cry because today feels so temporary But I want to remind you that the connections made here are everlasting The relationships we built at Woodward will be with us no matter what Each of us is so full of hope and light and promise We are capable of amazing things I know I speak for all of us when I say that I am so proud to be graduating with this special class the Class of 2015 7

Advancement360 Ronda Zents on Teaching at Woodward The unexpected and fabulous discoveries of every day Upper School English teacher Ronda Zents was awarded the A Thomas Jackson Professorship Award given to an Upper School faculty member who has demonstrated meritorious service to the Academy Tell us about your background Where did you grow up and who were major influences on your early life Ronda has fully embraced the Woodward philosophy of giving back to her school community said Marcia Spiller Vice President and Dean for Academic Affairs She brings passion and commitment to all that she does Her service to Woodward is exemplary In addition to her teaching responsibility Ronda serves many roles in the Upper School as Service Learning coordinator Service Club sponsor and Service Leadership Board advisor She also co sponsors the Five Points Diversity Club co chairs the Upper School Community Council and serves as a representative on the Academy wide Community Council Ronda has chaperoned several student trips including travel to our sister school Terranova in Zambia She served as faculty co sponsor and chair of the Honor Council and led a professional learning community in the English Department She also served for three years as faculty co sponsor for the Senior Philosophy Seminar What inspires this incredible teacher Woodward magazine took the opportunity to learn more about her Hampton Roads Virginia is where I was born and apart from two brief stints in Germany and Alabama I spent my childhood there by the waters of the Warwick River and Chesapeake Bay My father was an Army helicopter pilot and I always give him the credit for my wanderlust As a teenager I traveled to faraway places like South Korea Hong Kong and Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands to visit him I credit my mother for normalizing hard work There were periods during my adolescence when she worked two jobs but I never saw her shrug her shoulders with exhaustion She had these beautiful clear blue eyes that were always upturned in a smile Why did you decide to become a teacher and what are your favorite things about your profession During my high school senior trip I had a moment of realization that I wanted to teach At the University of Georgia I studied French and English and upon graduation taught English in Francophone Congo After pursuing an advanced degree to teach at the university level I arrived at an appreciation for the formative power of the high school years and I have never left I love the variety of my work day and its creative pulsings What an amazing job I have to teach share learn stories Some of the stories represent the great literary classics traditionally taught in school The A Thomas Jackson Professorship Fund is an endowment established in 2000 with a gift from the Charles Loridans Foundation Inc Income from the endowment fund provides salary enhancement of 5 000 annually for a period of five years to each recipient To learn more about supporting our faculty call the Advancement Office at 404 765 4030 Your leadership of Service Learning Five Points Club and Community Council speaks to your passions Why do you care about these things and what do you hope students will learn from them When I lived in Congo and Kenya I went there naively to serve others and received more in return than I could have ever given I discovered a great personal life lesson investing oneself in the sharing of cultures and giving to others is the secret to deeper happiness Living in Atlanta provides the same setting for global encounters I hope our students learn the power of understanding the lives of others and living with empathy One way that I can directly support this experiential learning is to introduce them to service opportunities like the Jesse Draper Boys Girls Club Habitat for Humanity and our sister school Terranova continued on next page Summer 2015 The Professorship while others capture new voices of service difference youth and experience I love them all and their way of impacting students views of their world I am thankful to call this passion my career 31
Advancement360 continued from page 31 You have been at Woodward since 2005 What makes Woodward different from other schools Why Support The Woodward Fund Insight from Our Returning Chair Governing Board Member Andrew Sullivan and his wife Donna will chair The Woodward Fund for another year in 2015 2016 Woodward magazine spoke with Mr Sullivan about the annual giving program what it means to the school and why parents should get behind it Woodward s community is unparalleled It is a moveable feast I borrow Hemingway s description of Paris but I believe the metaphor fits Woodward is moving in an exciting electric way where people are developing intentional relationships and having important conversations and students are being challenged and nurtured in profound ways After spending a decade here I am comfortably seated at a banquet where I am filled by the bounty but am still able to try new things You are a mom in addition to being a very dedicated professional How do you find balance in your life I start and end my day in moments of prayer and reading Sometimes the prayers are very short worries are exhaled and pleas for courage are inhaled As a family of four we try very hard to eat dinner together to reconnect after a day spent in four different directions I thank my husband for being the one who more often than not puts these meals on the table My family also gives me the space to nurture my soul in ways that I know feed it For example it is not unusual to find me singing karaoke with my neighbors and colleagues at the East Point Corner Tavern on Saturday nights and teaching first grade Sunday school at North Avenue Presbyterian Church on Sunday mornings Woodward Academy What inspires you 32 The healthy relationships that surround me My colleagues and their commitment to their students My students and their desire to find and create meaning in their lives The unexpected and fabulous discoveries of every day Tell us about your family s Woodward experience and why you and your wife chose Woodward Academy for your children Woodward was such a great fit for our daughter Katie now a rising junior after she left the Schenck School She has thrived at Woodward because of its many programs and activities Donna and I were so impressed with what Woodward offered that we moved our son Drew who just graduated from Woodward Over the years we have become more and more involved in the life of the school because of what Woodward means to our family We greatly appreciate your chairing The Woodward Fund again next year realizing that like many parents you have a busy life Why do you commit that kind of time and energy to The Woodward Fund I have a sincere passion for top notch educational experiences for our youth Our students are fortunate to have access to many programs and academic opportunities to prepare them for life The Woodward Fund raised 1 858 675 in cash gifts in 2014 2015 surpassing its previous record by 54 000 when many other communities and educational systems are lacking in this area The broad range of opportunities available to our students is partly thanks to The Woodward Fund Are there any myths you would like to dispel about The Woodward Fund The primary myth is that tuition covers 100 percent of the cost to educate a student and that the school doesn t need any further financial support from current and former students and families Tuition covers about 90 percent of the cost and The Woodward Fund helps make up the difference Today we are the beneficiaries of those who have given in the past It is now our time to pay it forward to continue the Woodward legacy Why should parents support The Woodward Fund Our parents have committed and sacrificed to send their children to Woodward to provide the very best educational and program experiences and The Woodward Fund plays an important role in shaping these programs We want parents to realize we need their participation at any giving level and that strong parent participation helps us attract support from foundations and corporations

Class Notes 2015 Wise Guidance for Girls Celebrating 50 Years of Women at Woodward Diversity at Woodward Academy is undeniable with a broad spectrum of cultures ethnicities abilities and more illuminating the educational journey for our students Diversity is such a big part of our school that it is difficult to imagine campus life any other way H We only had a winter uniform that we had to wear year round said Ms Davis daughter of Lt Col W H Davis then professor of military science We had a wool pleated skirt white blouse navy blazer wool vest and royal blue tie It was a clip on but I hated that tie I pulled it off every chance I had and Capt Brewster would always see me and tell me to put my tie back on Complete with tights or knee socks and loafers the girls were dressed warmly for the Academy but their lives as students remained restricted in several ways as the school balanced preparing boys to be military men with broadening the college preparatory curriculum During free periods girls had to sit behind the librarian s desk as they were not allowed to study in the library with the cadets When the boys marched in their platoons during the last period of the day the girls had gym class Without designated restrooms in that first co ed year girls used faculty bathrooms Any time there s change you re going to have people who don t accept it We were not welcomed by several of the young men there They just Susan Brewster did not want Patterson 65 girls said Susan Brewster Patterson 65 one of the first two girls to graduate from the Academy daughter of Capt Brewster and great granddaughter of the school s founder Col John Charles Woodward However the Academy was not a total gender divide in those early days Girls ate lunch with the cadets in the dining hall They joined the chorus played tennis and worked on the yearbook in addition to attending the core classes which were open to both girls and boys According to Mrs Patterson some of the hard feelings stemmed from speculation about the school s plans to drop military studies That conversion became official in 1966 and the Academy steadied itself on a path of what she believes were the best decisions made for the survival of the school When the military program was discontinued the school was renamed Woodward Academy The Board adopted a non discriminatory policy in 1968 the first girls dormitory Evans Hall was completed in 1969 and the Academy was fully integrated in 1971 This series of decisions spurred by Capt Brewster allowed the Academy to modernize while bolstering its college prep curriculum and course offerings in the humanities as well as its athletic programs Mrs Patterson credits the Academy for opening opportunities for higher education to girls who attended in the 1960s opportunities they may not have had otherwise She paid it forward to subsequent generations of girls serving as a teacher at the Academy for more than three decades and sending her own daughters to Woodward After they graduated in the 1990s her daughters sought the Academy s nuanced diversity and varied curriculum when making college choices one daughter became an attorney and the other is a fine artist and teacher This year girls made up over half of the Woodward Academy graduating class a remarkable increase from two to 133 girls over the course of 50 years In fact the Academy has provided wise guidance to more than 4 400 girls since 1964 Woodward graduates can be very proud of where the school has gone and where it is now said Mrs Patterson Summer 2015 owever for more than six distinguished decades Georgia Military Academy served boys only This spring marked 50 years since the first girls graduated from the Academy At the urging of GMA s third president Capt William R Brewster Jr 37 the Governing Board admitted 32 female students in 1964 The decision predated the acceptance of women in major U S military service academies by more than a decade As with most significant change the transition was not entirely smooth They didn t know what to do with us said Betty Davis 65 one of only two girls to graduate in the first coeducational year I think the Board thought they had to change with Betty Davis 65 the times In Vietnam War era America military schools had begun to lose favor and enrollment in them was declining nationwide The need for change had grown urgent for schools like GMA even if they were not fully prepared After the Governing Board voted to admit girls eight girls enrolled in grades 8 12 and 24 were accepted in grades K 7 for the first year During that first coeducational year stories circulated of teachers telling jokes in their classes that did not include girls and of parents barring younger brothers from attending the same school at which their oldest sons were rising seniors From small issues such as what the girls uniform would be to greater quandaries like where they would study in the beginning there were more questions than comfort 45
