From President Gulley Occasionally I am asked about the purpose of Woodward magazine and I usually reply that this publication is intended to be all things to all people associated with the Academy In this our largest issue of the year we demonstrate this fact by highlighting the many activities and accomplishments of our vast operation In the following pages you will find an insightful portrait of the Class of 2013 written by Dr Chris Freer Vice President and Dean for Student Life and Upper School Principal You also will read about the many and varied accomplishments of our students in academics in the Awards section introduced by Marcia Prewitt Spiller Vice President and Dean for Academic Affairs who gives us a reflection on her first year in the role and a look ahead to plans for next year You will learn about student achievements on the athletic fields as well as an important new program to foster team building and about students expressing themselves and developing their talents in the arts In addition to news about our students you will find stories of alumni and the impact they are having in the world beyond Woodward At times I am asked to select a highlight or a special moment from the year that will stay with me With all of the impressive things described in these pages that is virtually impossible except to say that nothing ever surpasses the pride and joy of commencement As Dr Freer and Ms Spiller describe here we have been enriched by our remarkable students It s a pleasure and a joy a true blessing to work with them and for them each day May you be inspired by the Woodward stories that you find within these pages F Stuart Gulley at woodward You arrive at your own greatest strengths by receiving wise guidance along the way You arrive at your own view of the world by taking the journey with people who think differently than you You arrive at real strength of character by realizing a stumble often precedes the triumphant step You arrive at a more complete definition of success by discovering the path that is uniquely your own woodward edu SUMMER 2013 1

Reflections on the Class of 2013 By Dr Chris Freer Vice President and Dean for Student Life Upper School Principal The Class of 2013 left an indelible mark on Woodward Academy both through academic successes and co curricular pursuits Every graduating class has its own personality that develops over time and the same is true for the Class of 2013 This class certainly has many of the same characteristics of the 19 classes I have seen graduate from Woodward Every class contains personalities that might be thought of as typical types including scholars athletes artists student government leaders environmentalists social advocates and everything in between One of the truly special aspects of this group of seniors is how they evolved as a class to serve and to lead in a selfless manner that united them and benefited the entire Woodward community 2 WOODWARD ACADEMY

The service of this class was felt close to home and far away Members of the Class of 2013 provided service leadership to local regional and global charities in diverse ways and in a wide range of capacities Financial contributions to these organizations were once again impressive with the school collecting more than 100 000 for a dozen different charities Perhaps even more impressive however was the service learning that took place throughout the school Through the newly formed Service Leadership Board seniors created real opportunities for students to engage with charities on a more intimate level Students tutored almost daily at the Jesse Draper Boys Girls Club Mount Olive and Hapeville elementary schools Woodward students volunteered at the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity This summer students will travel to our sister school in Zambia to work side by side with students from the Terranova School on conservation projects along the lower Zambezi River Through the newly formed Service Leadership Board seniors created real opportunities for students to engage with charities on a more intimate level The Class of 2013 provided leadership in many ways throughout the year Certainly there were individuals who led the class in the more obvious and traditional ways but this class also was full of leaders who were not elected officers but led in an unofficial capacity The leaders were athletic team captains honor council members and individuals who passionately advocated for social causes or community problems simply because it was the right thing to do Senior leadership could be found in the classroom on the stage throughout the fields of athletic competition in community service and in every hallway The very fact that the senior class dedicated its yearbook to a friendly face that greets them in the attendance office every morning and the cafeteria staff members who served them meals throughout their years at Woodward confirms that these students understand what it means to serve Perhaps the greatest attribute of the Class of 2013 is the way the seniors unified the entire Upper School community Woodward also was designated a No Place for Hate school for the third consecutive year They started the school year hosting the first ever fun in the sun event on the last day of summer and celebrated the start of school as a senior class Another highlight of the year and a visible or perhaps audible display of the community built by this class was the adrenaline hush basketball game when the War Eagles defeated St Pius in front of a standing room only crowd The annual Week of Understanding was a tremendous success due in large part to the leadership of our senior class Seniors in every student organization club and team celebrated our diversity during a festival that concluded the week Woodward also was designated a No Place for Hate school for the third consecutive year As we continue to develop our deep respect for difference as a school community our senior class helped model these ideals in the way they care for one another and the entire school community The members of the Class of 2013 were the last seniors to attend classes in Brewster McKay and West Halls and the last to enjoy the tradition of celebrating the last day of school around the magnolia tree in the Brewster courtyard While this class was made up of 247 seniors who each had their own individual experiences the class was collectively defined by the sum of its personalities Together they became socially and personally responsible servant leaders creative and critical thinkers problem solvers and lifelong learners The 247 seniors in the Class of 2013 have preserved the proud traditions of Woodward and they have left a lasting impression on me personally and on the Academy woodward edu SUMMER 2013 3

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Alumna Turns Blog into Book Lydia Whitlock 04 is the author of a new book published by Random House in April To My Assistant Things I ll Never Do to You but Many Other Crazy Bosses Will is based on her blog about working as an assistant in the Los Angeles film industry The book pokes fun at the ridiculous demands Hollywood bosses make of their assistants sorting their M Ms by color creating and maintaining their online dating profiles and offers helpful tips for Boss Wrangling Woodward magazine caught up with Lydia by email for a peek into her life as an assistant turned author Where did you go to college and what brought you to L A and your job as an assistant I went to Yale and eventually decided to major in film studies there so I thought the logical step for me after graduating was to move to the epicenter of the film industry Los Angeles and try to figure out if I wanted to work in film and in what capacity Being an assistant is one of the only real entry level jobs in the business and it s also a great way to learn the different sides of the business and figure out which might be something you d like to pursue as a career Why did you start your blog I started my blog after spending a couple of years hearing other assistants say and saying to myself When I have an assistant I ll never do this ridiculous thing my boss just did to them I thought it was a good natured and funny way to call attention to this kind of behavior My number one goal was to make fellow assistants laugh at our shared misery What is the funniest weirdest situation with a boss that ever happened to you as an assistant Once I spent my Sunday morning picking up a massive baby shower cake for a party my boss was throwing The cake was emblazoned with the baby pictures of the expectant couple and was pretty creepy Another time my boss screamed at me really screamed because the butter that came with his lunch was too warm I had to squeeze each packet of butter to test its temperature before giving it to him for the rest of my time working there But my favorite crazy assistant story doesn t even belong to me A friend of mine once had to go to her boss s house on a Saturday to pick up a stool sample from his dog and deliver it to the vet because her boss just plain didn t want to 20 WOODWARD ACADEMY How did you parlay the blog into a book It turns out that one way to get Hollywood s attention is to make fun of it so after the blog started spreading around to assistants and then to executives I started getting some emails about agent representation and TV rights So I turned to an agent friend at WME Entertainment who put me in touch with my book agent there and she walked me through the process of writing a book proposal which we eventually sold to a publisher whose ideas for the book lined up with mine And after all that I started writing the book The whole process of selling the book felt like a crazy whirlwind but the actual writing of the book was really fun for me What is life like now as an assistant turned author Well to be honest it s only been a few months so time will tell But so far it s been great I m working on quite a few other writing projects because the big question is always What s next Any thoughts on Woodward and how it prepared you for your life today Woodward definitely prepared me for my life today I always loved writing but my time at Woodward really helped me to develop my skills and style which are still improving I hope every day Any special teachers or friends from your Woodward days that influenced you or remain a part of your life So many of my teachers influenced me at Woodward but especially my AP English teachers Mrs Haldeman and Ms Lee who both really encouraged my writing and my chemistry teacher Ms Nettles who sponsored our film club and is responsible for my first ever viewing of Citizen Kane among many other great films And I ll always remember Mr Bryant who was able to make our AP Economics class completely enjoyable with his sense of humor which possibly contributed to my doing the same with being an assistant How about your family What do they think of your book Both of my parents have always had great senses of humor When I finally told them about the blog and the attention it was getting they paused briefly to take it all in and then said Well you were always good at turning bad situations into good ones They live in Baltimore now and are very very proud about the whole thing The book is dedicated to them
