Building Leadership at Woodward Woodward develops leadership in many ways with opportunities for students faculty and staff Leaders learn from experience and by example and Woodward is committed to graduating students equipped to become leaders in whatever field they choose to pursue in life We invited students faculty and our own leader President Stuart Gulley to provide perspectives on leadership at Woodward Student leadership roles allow our students to have a direct impact on daily student life in the Upper School SGA members act as spokesmen for each class and representatives in conversation with the administration regarding a variety of student life topics In the Peer Leadership Program junior and senior students have a profound impact on the incoming freshman class by mentoring them and covering a wide range of topics from their transition into high school to peer pressure to teen relationships and the importance of grades Every year I am amazed at the leadership abilities of our students It s incredible to see the maturity and work ethic that so many of them show when put in charge Dr Chris Freer Vice President and Dean for Student Life Junior Morgan Millon With our Peer Leaders we put them in a room with 12 ninth grade students and no adults That s their first truly challenging experience as a Peer Leader and it really takes them out of their comfort zone Most of them succeed Occasionally they stumble But it s in this stumbling that they grow They begin to find out what they are made of and they figure out how to achieve the outcome that they have been trained to reach for as a Peer Leader I am most impressed by the commitment of our student leaders These students are typically the busiest on campus with some of the toughest schedules How they are able to do the work in the classroom on the athletic fields and on the stage and still successfully lead their peers in a leadership role is truly inspiring Mark Carrington Upper School Science Department Chair and Peer Leadership Advisor 4 WOODWARD ACADEMY Oftentimes our students have the misconception that leaders are those with the loudest voices or the most popularity In community service we try to teach students that the most effective leadership occurs when a person with passion is willing to take initiative For the 2012 2013 school year we have created a new Community Service Leadership Board where students apply for a position on the board and are selected based on their commitment to community service and their willingness to provide leadership The board will plan advertise and execute all service projects in the Upper School Jonathan Merrill Upper School History Department Chair and Community Service Advisor

My interest in joining Peer Leadership came from my own experience as a freshman I looked up to my Peer Leaders and had so much respect for them as leaders that I wanted the same opportunity I think the most rewarding part of Peer Leadership is that it brings completely random and diverse groups of freshmen together They learn to trust each other and develop a friendship with people they may not have known otherwise I look forward to helping my peers make their high school experience more fulfilling Getting involved in leadership opportunities at Woodward really helps you grow as an individual and gives you an opportunity to be the change you want to see The faculty is committed and supportive of making the freshmen transition as smooth as possible they trust and respect us as students to help lead the way with our peers Lindsay Rohrer 13 Peer Leader Leadership Woodward an internal leadership program for employees was initiated after my arrival here as a way to address concerns regarding a large number of anticipated retirements in coming years For example this year we had 18 faculty staff members retire representing a combined 388 years of Woodward experience Our hope was that a program like Leadership Woodward would assure a cadre of internal folks trained to take on leadership roles in the future while providing on site opportunities for professional growth minimizing the sense of isolation people may feel in such a large organization and providing participants with a greater appreciation for how the various units of the Academy academic co curricular and administrative operate to fulfill our mission Leadership Woodward requires of its participants a fairly intensive commitment of time and energy even as it provides tools for learning and growth After two years of the program and 40 participants I am greatly satisfied that our aims have not only been met but well exceeded Of the original 16 participants at least seven are now or will be next year in roles of increased responsibility While it s possible these individuals might have assumed these duties without Leadership Woodward I have no hesitation in saying that they will be better leaders because of the experience I also believe all of the Leadership Woodward participants have enhanced their abilities to lead in the roles they currently occupy while gaining a much greater appreciation for the breadth and complexity of Woodward s operation and the diverse people who make up this great school Woodward students are fortunate to have opportunities created by endowed funds which provide annual revenue for the development of leadership skills For example the Robert Warren Ross American History Endowment Fund has recently grown so that it now provides both an annual enrichment program for students and a summer leadership program in American history for a selected Upper School student The first student recipient Kelly Guest 13 chose to attend a summer session on the topic From the American Revolution through the American Civil War at the College of William Mary this summer The Anne G and Bernard Graliker Visiting Speaker Fund provides for leadership speakers each year and for a summer leadership development opportunity for a selected Upper school student B J Myers 13 will be at Brown University this summer participating in the school s Leadership Institute And finally The Tyler H Brown 96 Leadership Speaker Series Endowment Fund brings a nationally renowned speaker to campus each year for the Veterans Day Program for our Upper School students Last year s speaker was Maj Daniel Gade the commanding officer of Tyler Brown during his service in Iraq Each of these funds encourages the development of leadership in today s students and provides resources to continue that tradition into the future Robert F Hawks Vice President for Advancement President Stuart Gulley woodward edu SUMMER 2012 5

Odyssey of the Mind By Kathy Smith Teacher Coach Director of Odyssey of the Mind oodward North can be proud of the strong successful tradition of its Odyssey of the Mind program which has sent 20 teams to world competition over the past seven years The administration teachers students and parents have all played important roles in this success W Odyssey of the Mind allows students to learn creative problemsolving methods while having fun in the process By tapping into creativity and encouraging imaginative paths to problem solving students learn skills that will provide them with the ability to solve problems great and small for a lifetime Teams are given a problem to work on over the course of the year They also practice spontaneous problem solving once a week At competition they present their long term problem solution and are given a spontaneous problem to solve Teams are coached by teachers and parents who volunteer As a coach my biggest thrill is watching these children take control of their learning and stretch their minds to be creative I enjoy watching them grow in their willingness to take chances Team members learn what might be considered a failure is actually a step toward a better solution Students also grow in confidence Children who participate in Odyssey of the Mind learn to be supportive of each other and collaborate There is no idea ownership and therefore everything belongs to the team including the success This environment makes every child feel safe to express his her thoughts Woodward North s first place team from 2009 below front row Joi Asireddy middle row Diva Sharma Shaan Bhakta Nava Amalford Cora Smith Natalie Milton and Oscar Dow and back row coaches Jill Dow and Tonya Milton Coach Kathy Smith is not pictured Five members of this team were on the Upper School team that went to the 2012 World Finals this spring See page 37 for details Ananya Ganesh a fourth grade team member gives a student s perspective on the program Odyssey of the Mind has taught me that nothing is impossible and I can succeed if I work hard enough In fact everyone benefits from Odyssey of the Mind Parents and coaches learn new ways to support their child s learning and thinking These strategies impact the learning going on in the classroom and at home Team members learn how to use critical thinking skills how to question and how to listen and they become amazing collaborators Teachers have remarked that even children who are not participating benefit by observing the thinking and questioning strategies their Odyssey of the Mind classmates use during class Every year Woodward North sends teams to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals This year the competition was held at the end of May in Iowa In 2009 a Woodward North team took home a World Finals Championship Principal Lee Vincent said Woodward North has always sought to promote a culture of creative collaborative problem solving through the Odyssey of the Mind program Its promotion and growth complements our emphasis on 21st century learning and pedagogy Our students and their parent and teacher coaches become passionate about the learning opportunities and competitive challenges the program offers them he said We are proud of the legacy of success that the Odyssey of the Mind teams have established over the last ten years Note Although the tradition began more recently there the Lower School also has a very successful Odyssey of the Mind program woodward edu SUMMER 2012 13
