From the President For the last two years the Academy has been engaged in exploration of what it means to be a community A community has several essential elements including respect trust and confidence in the people with whom you are gathered Woodward is a fortunately blessed community with 2 700 plus students 600 plus employees more than 5 000 parents and 9 000 graduates Our size is vast and creating that sense of trust value and respect is not always easy Yet we succeed in creating community because of our embrace of diversity Woodward stands apart from many other collegepreparatory institutions in Atlanta and around this country because of our diversity in all its manifestations racial ethnic religious geographic and intellectual The challenge for the Academy is to move from diversity to inclusion as described in the Strategic Plan included in this issue of the Woodward magazine In addition to the creation of an inclusive community Woodward s Strategic Plan calls for enhancing academic excellence continuing to develop our facilities and our leaders of tomorrow all with an eye toward Woodward being at the forefront of collegepreparatory education nationally One might argue that Woodward is already a national model in college preparatory education As you will see in this issue the awards section showcases the great talent in our student body We also are known for preparing people for lives of meaningful service and you will read in these pages about an alumnus whose early life was greatly influenced by being part of the Woodward community A Chicago based pediatric cardiac specialist Dr Nguyenvu Winston Nguyen 90 was born in war torn Vietnam and his family survived extreme hardship before emigrating and settling in College Park He tells me that the haven Woodward provided not only gave him a sense of safety and security but also set the course for his future Dr Nguyen uses his talents and training in service of people in Chicago and around the world through his humanitarian work Also in this issue of the magazine you will see the third and final installment of our Woodward Family Tree feature exploring the remarkable people in our community and the connections between them Finally the commencement of the Class of 2011 brought us together to celebrate We were all proud to see those talented and accomplished young people receive their diplomas knowing that this community has prepared them so well for the future and imagining all the great things ahead of them As ever I am grateful to be among you May you have an enjoyable and restful summer F Stuart Gulley SPRING SUMMER 2011 1

SPOTLIGHT W ith family ties much on our mind as we prepared this spring summer issue of the Woodward magazine we asked two families long associated with the Academy to talk with us Russ Welch and Bobby Bowers 74 are both members of the Academy s Governing Board Russ is the Board s Vice Chairman The two men and their wives Rhonda and Cindy are parents of alumni who share a long friendship that began when their children were at Woodward North Following is a Q A about their long relationships with Woodward and with each other Why did you choose Woodward for your children Rhonda Welch Russ and I had just moved to North Fulton when our daughter Jen was born We wanted the diversity and broadness of the educational experience that Woodward offered along with the small classes and personal touch that comes with it We also wanted to be involved in our daughter s education Bobby Bowers There is an obvious reason for our choice I went to Woodward I played football and wrestled for the legendary Coaches Graham Hixon and Johnny Stallings And I served on the Alumni Association Board Cindy taught in the Middle School at the Academy and we even got married in Gresham Chapel Woodward is in our blood I have to admit we were not unlike many young families We struggled financially at times making home equity loans each year to pay the tuition however we have been blessed for this sacrifice with wonderful teachers who took personal interests in our children with broad academic and extracurricular programs that allowed each of our sons to develop and excel in his own interests in the classrooms on the athletic fields and in the arts and importantly each child developed the confidence tenacity and selfesteem to face this dynamic world We understand you are close friends Can you describe the history of your relationship a bit Russ Welch We met during our children s first year together at Woodward North Our families vacationed together for several years until the kids got to Middle School and began to develop new friendships with other kids Bobby and I have played a lot of golf together over the years and of course we attend many Woodward functions together Bobby Woodward Academy brought us together Our first acquaintance was during the early years at Woodward North and has continued through our children s college careers The Welchs daughter Jen and our middle son Ryan were in the same kindergarten class at North We shared similar hopes for our children and over time we discovered we had many common personal and business interests Russ has always been the instigator for everything the cruise entertainment director if you will whether it is playing a round of golf sightseeing taking a trip or discussing a business issue or challenge He is an unselfish friend and a helpful advisor one that possesses a profound level of old fashioned common sense that cuts through many complex transactions SPRING SUMMER 2011 The Bowers top and Welch families As two of the first families at Woodward North in the early years of that campus you were among the first to send your children from North to the Main Campus when they reached Middle School Can you describe that decision and the experience Russ As far as Rhonda and I were concerned it was a very easy decision After the wonderful experiences Jen had at Woodward North we never thought to send her anywhere else We had concerns about the long bus ride from Alpharetta but we discovered that Main Campus was not nearly as far as we thought and it became immediately clear that Jen loved the bus ride Looking back she learned many good social skills interacting with the other students on the bus Jen became a stronger person and a better student because of her experiences as a student at the Middle School Later as she learned to drive I enjoyed riding with her to school as she learned to deal with Atlanta traffic as a 15 and 16 year old Continued on next page 13
SPOTLIGHT continued from page 13 Cindy Bowers By the time our children had reached the sixth grade they were all anxious to go to the Main Campus The bus system eased and simplified that decision with a convenient neighborhood pick up and drop off schedule The classroom tutorials and the sports programs were all geared around the bus schedules so that using the bus transport did not restrict the boys involvement in after school programs What are your children doing now and what impact has Woodward made on their lives Rhonda After graduating from Woodward Jen went to Vanderbilt University where she graduated magna cum laude with a degree in human and organizational development and Spanish While at Vanderbilt Jen spent a semester living in Spain where she attended the University of Valencia and taught English to fourth grade Spanish students She currently works for BKV an Atlanta advertising agency as an Interactive Media Planner for clients including Spanx Equifax and AT T Wireless Woodward Academy prepared Jen for college and life afterward by creating an environment that mirrors the world s diversity Woodward is socioeconomically religiously ethnically athletically and academically diverse This prepared Jen for the diversity in college and the workplace Cindy The size of Woodward and the multiple levels of academic programs enabled the school to nurture our sons unique interests After Robby graduated in 2002 he played baseball for Furman University and 14 then attended Auburn University where he received his Ph D in kinesiology He then attended the Philadelphia College of Medicine and is now in the middle of his medical school practical rotations Ryan graduated Woodward in 2004 and later graduated summa cum laude from Vanderbilt in civil engineering He is now finishing his master s degree and works for the U S Army Corp of Engineers as a blast percussion specialist in Huntsville Brett graduated in 2006 and has just finished the five year architecture program at Auburn He has received several design awards studied in Florence Italy and completed an internship in New York City He was a Samuel Mockbee design student and is currently spending a postgraduate year in Auburn s nationally recognized Rural Studio program where he is participating in the design and construction of town halls recreation facilities and lowincome housing in underprivileged areas of Alabama You have continued to support the school with loyalty and dedication through service on the Governing Board Why do you choose to do that Russ In Woodward Academy Rhonda and I have found an institution that we can believe in and support It gives us a vehicle to give back to the community In many ways if feels like a calling to continue our involvement and contributions Bobby For me it is obvious Woodward has been a part of my entire life I am reminded of my own Woodward foundation every time I look at my sons W O O D WA R D A C A D E M Y What do you think of Woodward today Russ With President Stuart Gulley s leadership I believe Woodward Academy is on the cusp of national recognition as a model for secondary education in the United States maybe even the world Dr Gulley s leadership style is impressive from every perspective I am very glad that the Board of Governors was able to attract Dr Gulley and his family to Woodward and I hope he continues to lead the school for many years to come Bobby I am so proud of our facilities our high energy dedicated faculty and our superior administration I have been so pleased to watch President Gulley embrace our unique educational platform with our exceptional diversity encourage our excellence in academics the arts and athletics and importantly strive to build a sense of community with our constituents This is exciting and it fuels my interest in being a part of Woodward Academy
