Continued from page 1 College Park is home to Woodward Academy and we re honored to have this prestigious institution in our city Dr Gulley we appreciate the job you ve done and I thank you for the job you will continue to do leading this school into the future College Park Mayor Jack P Longino The presence of Dr Gulley on our campus immediately proved to be an important asset in the lives of students Dr Gulley challenges us to stretch our limits in all aspects of our lives He challenges us to exceed the expectations as adolescents and to excel as students of Woodward Academy Kelsey Schmidt 10 SGA President Heroes G overning Board Chairman Ben F Johnson III 61 spoke of the search process for Woodward s seventh President When the name of Stuart Gulley emerged Mr Johnson recalled Dr Gulley s service at Emory University prior to his appointment as President of LaGrange College And Mr Johnson said he had read Dr Gulley s book The Academic President as Moral Leader James T Laney at Emory University 1977 1993 I ve always told people that if you want to know something about people try to find out who their heroes are Mr Johnson said Introducing the keynote speaker alluding to his tenure as President of Emory as well as to his ambassadorship of Korea Mr Johnson said In Jim Laney you have somebody who represents everything that I think we would aspire for this institution to represent academic achievement integrity civilization statesmanship Dr Laney spoke of Dr Gulley s vocation or call to service in education To be touched by the awareness that life holds something truly noble and worthy that we are a part of that s what Dr Gulley brings here Dr Laney also spoke of Thomas Jefferson s brief autobiography which describes a 16 year old Jefferson leaving home for the College of William Mary and his conversations with a teacher named William Small This teacher was an important influence Dr Laney said He had studied philosophy really economics and philosophy and out of that Jefferson distilled those marvelous nuggets of wisdom that as we all know within two decades after he had gone to William Mary became the Declaration of Independence The vision of that kind of life which calls us forth and awakens things that we weren t even aware were there that sets us aflame the kind of thing that happened to Jefferson the kind of thing that can happen on every campus all the time he continued This is what education at its best is about and you are blessed to have it here dedicated teachers who are committed not only to their disciplines and subjects but really the larger welfare of each person and the opportunity to share in those ways And I would say Stuart you are in the very best tradition of that education and I know that under your leadership with fresh thought and careful discipline and shared dreams of greatness that you will receive God s blessing in your task and it will be shared with all of your colleagues and the students in the years to come President Gulley is pictured with Junior Neeraja Panchepakesan After an email correspondence with the Upper School student Dr Gulley invited Neeraja and her family to be his special guests at the inauguration luncheon 2 WOODWARD MAGAZINE
Embracing Woodward s Future Outlining the Vision Following are excerpts from President Gulley s inaugural address which began with expressions of gratitude to the many people who made Woodward what it is today W e are so fortunate to gather in this historic heart and center of this campus on this beautiful day I am grateful for the long 110 year legacy of what has happened right here in the confines of this campus This environment has been the scene of great studying and goofing off and pranks It has been the scene of many new buildings It has been the scene of courtships and engagement It has been the scene of showcasing student talent as we experienced on Tuesday of this week with our Experience the Arts Day and how fortunate we are to have such a wide variety of art offerings here It has been the scene of numerous ceremonies inaugurations convocations graduations even President Coolidge during his administration came to this very site to review the Georgia Military cadet troops And it has been the scene with our ceremonial Bull Ring for many cadets when they got those detentions to march them off and to contemplate the nature of disobedience The most iconic image that we have here at this campus is that of our Gates which date back to the 1930s They have served as the entry point the gateway to all that Woodward Academy stands for Well our Gates are over covered with ivy Landscape architects have told me that it might be nearing destruction if we don t make a change So starting this afternoon the ivy is coming off the Gates opening up the rest of this vista here and I hope in a symbolic way to represent what I have intended from my first day here and I promise to you for the remainder of my tenure at Woodward Academy an open and transparent administration Over the course of the last year I have attempted in my openness and transparency to collect as much data as I can about this institution and to hear your and opportunities for Woodward for the future I d like to share these reflections with you thoughts about where we should go in the future For over six months four task forces worked very hard looking at the school s mission at community at sustainability and at our P E and athletics programs I m grateful to Ron McCollum and Laura Washington Chery Gibson and Lee Vincent for their masterful and skillful leadership of these groups and for the recommendations that they presented to me on March 19 Those recommendations will be made available online this summer In addition to these Blue Ribbon Task Force reports over the last year I have attempted to get to know as many people as possible and to hear your thoughts and perspectives on the school By my estimation over the last 10 months I have met with at least 75 groups approximating over 1 000 people I have gotten a lot of feedback from folks And so I d like to take a few minutes to reflect with you on two of the questions that I asked in many of those focus groups One question was What do you value and appreciate about Woodward The other is what do you see as the challenges SPRING SUMMER 2010 It will be a helpful framework for you to understand these reflections for me to talk just a moment about a philosophy of education that has been important in my thinking These are the thoughts of an ethicist at the University of Chicago named Martha Nussbaum who in 1997 published a work titled Cultivating Humanity In that work she did a reflection on what liberal arts education should be about advocated that liberal arts education at its best prepares people for life and for citizenship She says that there are three essential elements in the educational endeavor One is that you must develop critical thinking skills be able to express yourself well and to find in yourself a kind of confidence and authority that does not make you beholden to authorities beyond yourself A second element she says is that institutions need to have an understanding of breaking free of demographic boundaries to recognize that regardless of race religion gender sexual orientation that we are all essentially bound together as one human family And then finally she says education at its best helps students foster narrative imagination an ability to step outside of your own experience and look through the lens and experience of another person challenging your own lived experience In thinking about that framework there is much there that I value and appreciate about Woodward We do a remarkably good job of preparing students for college in developing critical thinking skills in encouraging self confidence among our students If I have heard it once I have heard it a hundred times from graduates and parents of graduates More Inauguration on next page 3
Continued from page 3 Woodward prepared their child for college We should always hold fast to the educational endeavor not compromise the rigor for which we are known and be thoughtful about preparing students for college The second element I think that we can celebrate is the rich diversity that exists at Woodward Repeatedly I ve heard in groups that one of the things that people value about Woodward is its diversity There is not another private school in Atlanta I daresay in the United States that has the richness of diversity of Woodward Thirty seven percent of our students are students of color While the majority of our students are Christian 12 percent are Jewish 5 percent are Muslim and 2 percent are Hindu But our diversity extends beyond our makeup We represent geographic diversity And we have great academic diversity here as well recognizing that students don t all learn the same way I value our diversity I appreciate the richness of community that we enjoy The area where I feel we have the greatest opportunity at Woodward is in that of narrative imagination in helping us to step out of our own lived experience and to understand the world through the lived experience of another person The feedback that I have received from the Community Blue Ribbon Task Force as well as the Sustainability Task Force I believe will direct us in our efforts at doing that It will be a lifelong process for us because we never fully know the lived experience of another person So we must find ways to cultivate opportunities for that Our triennial Week of Understanding which we just had several weeks ago was a marvelous way of doing that But we have to do it more than just every three years So I m calling on us to consider doing it on an annual basis and to find ways more than just in one week of the year to expose ourselves to the lived experience of each and every one of us at this institution I accept the recommendation 4 of the Community as well as the Sustainability Task Force to name permanent councils related to community as well as to sustainability The P E and Athletics Task Force offered additional thoughts for our consideration about narrative imagination about clearer communications between students and coaches and students and coaches and parents about what we intend by our athletic program which they praised for the numerous successes that we enjoy in athletics I accept their recommendation that Varsity athletics should continue our decades long tradition of fielding championship teams We must be very open to championship sports here recognizing that will mean there will be some students who will not be selected for those teams nor if selected will they have the playing time they would necessarily enjoy But at the Junior Varsity and sub Varsity levels I do believe there will be opportunity for us to provide a wholesome athletic experience that will prepare our students for Varsity athletics For those who might not make the team we have an opportunity to build up our intramural program in a way that will support our Middle School and Upper School students in the years to come In the months ahead as early as next month the senior staff along with the principals and I will spend a day in a Community Awareness Task Force meeting with an outside consultant to begin to expand our horizons about the lived experience of others within this community That will be an ongoing effort by us for the years to come We also will begin this summer formulating clearly our philosophy surrounding athletics and communicate it clearly to our students and to our parents To assist in some of these charges it has occurred to me that one of the things that will help Woodward greatly given our size and complexity is for us administratively to be structured like a college or university WOODWARD MAGAZINE We lack at the senior level a Vice President for Student Life someone whose central role it is to advocate for the student within the senior ranks of the administration On July 1 we will create a vice presidential position for Student Life This position will be responsible for emergency preparedness and security for athletics and extracurricular activities at this institution for all of those things that touch on the student experience outside of the classroom I did not have to look very far to find the person who I felt could fill that role a person who has given himself over the last 15 years to this institution has gained the confidence of faculty and parents and students whom we helped to earn his master s and Ph D degrees And so on July 1 our Vice President for Student Life will be Dr Chris Freer Now Chris will not be replaced in the Upper School given our budget concerns And I m grateful to Mr Lineberry and to the other administrators in the Upper School who have been supportive of this move and for those individuals who will have to assume some of the responsibilities that Chris will no longer be able to undertake Chris office will be in the new Student Union complex and will be very visible and available to students of all ages here at the Academy Lest you think what does this mean about Ron McCollum Does Stuart not value Ron McCollum as Headmaster I want to assure you on the contrary I love and appreciate Ron I value the work that he has done This new arrangement will afford Ron the opportunity to devote his energies exclusively to the academic programs of Woodward Academy assuring a coherence and consistency among the units of Woodward Academy and a thoughtfulness about the curriculum that we have in each of those units The guidance for all of what I just talked about has been the work of the Mission Task Force If you open your program and look on the right
page you will see there the new mission statement motto and vision statement for the school that was recently endorsed by the Executive Committee of the Governing Board There was no change to our motto modest change to our mission statement but a very clearly articulated vision statement If you would look at that statement at the very bottom and I would like you to join me in reading it aloud Woodward Academy will be a national model in college preparatory education developing critical thinkers and ethical problem solvers in an inclusive community rich in opportunities for student success and would transfer it to the institution by the end of our fiscal year on May 31 Richard was ecstatic called me and asked if I would call this gentleman back And for 45 minutes I had a delightful conversation with this gentleman about what he believed Woodward Academy stood for He had lived in Atlanta had been a Delta pilot for 37 years and wanted his sons to have the benefit of a Woodward education He wanted Joseph and Logan to have this kind of preparation and he thanked me for what Woodward had done for them to prepare them for their lives of citizenship and for the models that they are in the world today And he said You know I ve decided that you don t need to wait until May 31 to receive my gift I want to transfer I am convinced today as much as I have ever been in my life that the world needs students who have had the benefit of a national model education focused on developing critical thinkers and ethical problem solvers The nature of our public discourse today in our democracy is frightening We need for people to learn to speak and engage with one another in civil tones and very well educated tones as well I am confident Woodward Academy will do that and we will claim our place as a standard bearer for the nation for the work we do in college preparatory education My confidence is buoyed by knowing that there are many people associated with this institution who support this model I had a rare and unusual experience of this two weeks ago Two weeks ago Richard Yancey who works in our Advancement Office received a phone call from a father of two Woodward graduates The father lives in Austin Texas He wanted to make a contribution to Woodward Academy in honor of his sons who had graduated from here in 1968 and 1975 He said that he wanted to make this commitment through the gift of appreciated stock it to you tomorrow by wire So first thing the next morning Richard emailed the wire instructions to this gentleman and by the end of the day in our bank account we received a gift for unrestricted purposes to use however we wish of 1 million SPRING SUMMER 2010 I shared with Mr Joseph Moss my thoughts about Woodward s potential to be a national model and he agreed with it and wanted to support it I wish I could take credit for having raised that million but it s the faculty and staff and administrators who were here in the 1960s and 1970s who raised those funds Mr Moss said that his youngest son Logan who was not a particularly demonstrative young man on the day of his graduation he will never forget the image of Mrs Sadie McKay embracing him warmly and how much it meant to him and his son that Mrs McKay took such an interest in him See page 10 for an article about Mr Moss It will be my recommendation to the Governing Board that this 1 million be the initial gift that we put toward the construction of a new state of the art technologically sophisticated architecturally sensitive humanities building that will be debt free once we have raised all the funds for it And at some point in the fall when we have completed our work with the small group sessions that are going on about that building I hope we can begin raising those funds in earnest Excellence Character Opportunity Those are the values that have served Woodward Academy well these 110 years And so long as I am your President I pledge to you that those will be our continuing values as we seek to prepare young men and women for full lives of citizenship and service in our democracy I am honored to be among you and I look forward to working with you for many years to come 5

Woodward Magazine recently had an opportunity to learn more about Mr Moss and his thoughts about our school today Following is the text from a Q A conducted with Mr Moss What prompted you to phone Woodward Academy and make such a significant gift After reading the latest issue of the Woodward magazine it struck me that the Academy has grown a great deal and the quality of the school which is far more important than its size has surpassed expectations I was so proud of the growth and so proud that my sons attended the Academy I have spoken with President Stuart Gulley and he has impressed me greatly The school s administration seems very solid Why did you choose GMA Woodward for your sons education We lived in East Point for many years and I was a pilot for Delta Air Lines Woodward was near our home and simply seemed like a natural fit for my sons Private education was not as widely available then as it is now gymnastics and was a member of the National Honor Society Both sons after attending Dartmouth and Bates College respectively went on to law school As a former Marine who returned home in 1945 from World War II service as a Marine Corps pilot how did you feel when the military program was discontinued and GMA a military boarding school for boys became Woodward Academy a coeducational independent school I had regrets at the time but when I look back I accept it as the right decision for the school It was definitely for the better What message would you like to send to Woodward Academy students I made myself somewhat wealthy with determination and focus working eight days a week I ve never stopped trying and I never let go What qualities about Woodward Academy did you most admire while your sons attended the school The school had has an atmosphere of intellectualism The students are expected to speak properly to write properly That s just so critical Major Abe Ferguson was a favorite teacher of both my sons He was an excellent inspiration He made learning languages interesting and fun Your sons Joseph and Logan were involved in many different extracurricular activities while at Woodward Did you encourage this No I let them choose There were many options for them and they tried different things over the years Joseph 68 participated in the military program rifle team swimming and was a thespian Logan 75 participated in the military program rifle team track and Woodward Academy President Stuart Gulley visited Mr and Mrs Moss at their home in Austin to personally thank them for their generous gift I had the great delight of visiting Mr and Mrs Moss in their magnificent home in Austin Texas Mr Moss is a man of remarkable energy and insight embodying Woodard s motto of Excellence Character and Opportunity He is highly principled and committed to his faith family and country He views education as a key for the advancement of all people and we are indebted to him for his generosity to Woodward Woodward Cares Year in Review D uring 2009 2010 the Woodward Cares program shipped 64 boxes to 19 alumni serving in the military overseas Packages containing goodies and supplies were sent five times during the year These packages contained everything from daily essential toiletries books and magazines to every type of snack food imaginable according to Sandy Adamek the Upper School teacher who coordinates the program with the help of faculty and students Cards were also sent during holidays During Homecoming alumni wrote notes sending best wishes to their classmates in SPRING SUMMER 2010 military service A third grade class from Woodward North wrote letters to their Woodward heroes and five boxes of books were donated to the Warrior Transition Battalion in Augusta Ga for a new library All of this was possible because of funds that were donated for postage Ms Adamek said 11
