had been serving on the condo board where I live for a number of months In a casual conversation my building manager Jim Badia mentioned to me that he had attended a military school before going to Michigan State University I said I also attended military school where did you go His reply was Georgia I said Me too what school Jim said Georgia Military Academy After I picked myself up off the floor we exchanged stories about Col Mitchell and Col Brewster along with memories of Memorial Hall the Bullring and the general mischief we caused as young cadets abroad I Florida Sunny Isles Beach Michael Burris 67 Sunny Isles Beach Fla bout 15 years ago my father Bill Dickerson 45 and mother were sitting in the lobby of the Dorchester Hotel on Hyde Park in London They looked across the lobby and there they saw Raymond G Woodall Jr 50 a member of Woodward s Advisory Board and his wife Martha They had a pleasant chat and went on to other things About a month later my parents were waiting for someone in the lobby of the Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco when Ray and Martha Woodall walked in Again they had a pleasant chat and went on to other things A few months later a postcard arrived in the mail from Ray and Martha Woodall with a picture of the Great Wall of China and the note We are here Where are you Brink Dickerson 75 M y husband Kevin Henderson and I are in the Army In 2007 we found that we were moving to Fort McPherson We looked at a number of schools in the area and visited Woodward After our daughter Olivia was accepted I took her to a clinic in Virginia to get the required physical After the doctor finished I asked her to fill out the Woodward specific forms as well as the military forms When she saw the name of the school she smiled and said Oh I went to a school that was also called Woodward Academy but it was in Atlanta I didn t know there was a Woodward in Northern Virginia When I said we were moving and the exam was for the Woodward in Atlanta she was thrilled She couldn t stop telling us what a great experience she had during her years at Woodward At the time Olivia was only 5 years old and was a bit anxious about moving It was very comforting for her to hear good things about Woodward from someone who had actually gone to the school The fact that the young woman was a successful pediatrician spoke volumes to me about the quality of Woodward graduates and helped to reinforce our decision to send our daughter to school here A I W e went on a whale watching tour in Boston during the summer of 2008 While on the tour a woman saw my son wearing his Woodward Academy shorts and told us she had relatives that go to Woodward Turns out they were in Harrison s grade and he knew them Also that same summer my best friend and her husband from Houston Texas were biking in Ireland They ran into a couple from Atlanta They learned that the couple s daughter goes to school with Harrison and is in his grade It s a small world Out in the Atlantic watching whales and in Ireland there were Woodward connections to be found Patsy Curtis Mother of Harrison rising 8th grader had a memorable Woodward encounter in June 2005 and later received this email from Woodward Upper School teacher Charles Bryant I hope you recall meeting me and my family on the elevator at the Four Seasons in Cairo this past June and that you recall I am a history and economics teacher at Woodward In our brief conversation you mentioned Gus Dearolph now retired On our return to school I asked Gus if he remembered you and he did He said he remembers you as a superb math student Jim Chandler also remembers you being very strong in math Everyone I ve told this story to about meeting a Woodward alum in an elevator in Cairo has been stunned Also the part about your building schools in Egypt impresses many I hope that your trip was as successful as ours and I look forward to hearing from you Chip Lawrence 68 Clearmont Wyoming Stephanie Stephens Mother of rising 3rd grader Olivia Feature continued on next page spr i ng s u m m er 2 0 0 9 3

Editor s note Eric and Katherine Ohlhausen decided to take their two children out of Woodward for a year to travel around the world as a family With the children back at Woodward their father recalls the family s remarkable journey u L Tower of London London England M y husband Rob a teacher at Lovett and I chaperoned a Lovett School trip to London and Paris during spring break We brought our daughter Sarah along On the trip we continually ran into one of our Woodward families including two students Sarah knew We saw them at the Tower of London and again in Paris It was so funny to see someone you know in another country wearing a Woodward Academy sweatshirt Kelly Sanderson Assistant Vice President for Finance and Administration Woodward Academy and mother to Sarah a rising junior D uring the summer of 2006 a colleague from Woodward and I hosted a group of Woodward students to Italy and Greece While traveling in the city of Sorrento I heard someone shriek Se or I teach Spanish It turned out the shriek belonged to a former Woodward student who was traveling in Europe that summer with her mother The same summer while traveling through the airport in Rome Italy we ran into a fellow faculty member and his family passing through on their way to Egypt Go figure We had two European Woodward rendezvous in the span of two weeks Jim Hampton Upper School Spanish Teacher T he place was the Royal Thai Air Force Base located about 90 miles north of Bangkok The occasion was the Vietnam War This location is about as far as you can get from the United States and stay in the Northern Hemisphere It is in a time zone 12 hours different from the Central Time Zone in the U S so that when it s noon in one place it s midnight in the other I was in the Air Force flying the KC 135 tanker having obtained my commission at Georgia Tech We were refueling fighter aircraft mainly the F 105s which were flying missions against North Vietnam One afternoon I walked into the officer s club and who should I see but Leonard Lucky Ekman 59 He was flying the F 105 and although I didn t know it at the time I had refueled his fighter several times during my stay at Takhli The year was 1966 and our conversation centered around how much we didn t like the fact that Woodward was changing from military to co ed Looking back I can see that expanding the student body and offering an Academy education to many more students was inevitable at some point in time Whether GMA or Woodward the Academy has always stood for excellence in academic instruction I can t recall seeing anything during three quarters of freshman chemistry at Georgia Tech that I hadn t already seen in Major Chisholm s chemistry class at GMA This type of preparation is why most Academy graduates go on to good colleges and from there to careers which are challenging and interesting They also tend to take us far and wide This is a big reason why we are likely to meet a fellow Academy graduate everywhere we go even if it s literally halfway around the world Fielding Dillard 58 The staff at Academy magazine wishes to thank all of our contributors for sharing their Woodward stories Some of you made us laugh Some made us cry And all made us grateful for being part of the Woodward community 4 ike many Katherine and I frequently felt that life is too short the kids were growing up faster than we d like work life and home life had become allconsuming and although we were fine we knew that good health is never a given With these thoughts in mind we decided to take our 11 year old son and 9 year old daughter out of school for a family trip around the world We traded a year of household comforts for a six continent 35 country journey After the trip the four of us are left with thoughts experiences and impressions that will influence our relationships and views for years to come Beginning in July 2007 we traveled through South Africa and Zimbabwe then onward to New Zealand and Australia We continued to China Southeast Asia and India Later we stayed with a collection of German relatives drove 12 000 miles throughout Eastern and Western Europe in a car emblazoned with a Woodward sticker and rented houses and apartments along the way In an exchange prompted by Marshall s Peachtree Road Race T shirt we even met two Woodward grads and their father on Greece s island of Santorini Our journey concluded with time in Argentina and Uruguay As interesting as the places and people we encountered was the structure of the trip itself a family of four together for nearly every hour of every day for an entire year Marshall and Wallis quickly recognized that each was the other s only friend for a year a realization that clearly has made them better siblings Katherine and I assumed the role of teachers which enabled a refreshing connection with the kids The year s continuous strain of travel taught all of us to not sweat the small stuff in life and we are a closer family because of it Along the way we also learned to live with much less If we couldn t carry it we didn t buy it If we were hungry we learned to appreciate unfamiliar cuisine The lessons of our trip have provided some helpful perspective during today s mood of disillusionment and we ve enjoyed the transition back into school work and home life While it s wonderful to be back among family and friends we will forever look fondly upon this stand out of a year Eric Ohlhausen acade m y m aga z i ne

CoverConcepts T he idea originated with Academy magazine designer Edward Tharp Why not ask Woodward s talented art students to design a cover The magazine s staff took the idea to Paul Angelo Vogt who teaches the year long art class for eighth graders and embraces every opportunity for his students to learn about the many ways that art skills can be applied in the professional world Mr Vogt asked for a formal request for proposal explaining the clients needs His students rose to the challenge producing multiple cover concepts and displaying a maturity beyond their years with the time talent and thought they put into the project Magazine staffers met with Mr Vogt and his students several times to refine the concepts In the end the editors chose this issue s cover by Susana Morphis for its resonance with the Academy s values and the spring time rite of graduation In gratitude to Susana and her classmates the editors decided to highlight a work from each student here H Selected Cover spr i ng s u m m er 2 0 0 9 9
