OPENING NEW DOORS On the horizon is a major new facility a new gymnasium locker wrestling loft and of ce facility on the site of the current Paget Gymnasium to provide ne new spaces for many sports as well as state of the art tness and weight facilities Opportunity has been a central word in the Woodward lexicon almost from the school s inception Our founder Colonel Woodward s oft quoted vision every opportunity for every student expressed early on that special Academy desire to embrace a large and expanding world And though Colonel Woodward might be quite startled at the Academy more than a century later his generous and ambitious spirit still resides in a school unique in its scale diversity and metropolitan reach Over the past several years we have continued this pursuit guarding what is central to our educational programs while opening new doors of opportunity that seem crucial to the world we want to create for our students and teachers We are committed to continuing this philosophy in the years ahead We do not pursue every new idea or every educational whim of the moment In many ways we are very traditional But we have embraced certain key ideas that we know can make a great institution even greater still THE CHANCE TO CONNECT All of our new buildings are wired to assure the best possible access to the resources of the new world of information technology providing a universe of possible knowledge This world is exciting and daunting offering expansive opportunities but also complicated dilemmas about how to navigate intelligently a bewildering array of resources and claims to truth and information To do this well requires more than the mechanisms involved networks computers SmartBoards software and the like The key is well trained faculty and an ample presence of new people who understand the positive possibilities of cyberspace and help us all reap those bene ts Because of this we have invested not simply in the things that make the cyber world accessible but also in the people who bring wisdom to our uses and pursuits SPACES TO LEARN Within the next decade if dreams become deeds virtually every one of the more than one million square feet of educational space at Woodward will be brand new or wholly renovated in the previous twenty ve years I doubt that any school has ever undertaken such an ambitious program as Woodward has grown a new body to t its extraordinary reach and the expectations of modern education We owe our children and teachers the spaces that provide the light air space technology and equipment with which they can thrive To that end beginning with the Carlos Science Building and the rst Woodward North buildings we have been proceeding with energy and foresight to create our 21st century Academy In recent years the creation of the new Middle School anchored a program that also included a new arts and activities building for North and a beautiful renovation of the Chapel Over the next ve to ten years we plan to complete the dream a new Primary School for our youngest on Main Campus an important addition to the Science Building and a replacement for our largest Upper School classroom complex in Brewster McKay and West Halls THE PRESENCE OF GREATNESS Our life on campus depends on many many predictable moments scheduled classes contests tests and meetings Doing this well day in and day out is the core of who we are But learning also requires the unpredictable the special moments that lift us out of the ordinary Two years ago we hosted the legendary Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko A student later spoke to me about her thoughts as she discussed her poetry with him I keep thinking This is so much bigger than I am To witness greatness and to learn that one can expand one s mind and heart to meet that greatness is crucial to a young person s growth To that end we have greatly expanded those opportunities in relationships and events with the High Museum the Atlanta Symphony the McEver Visiting Writer series the Atlanta Shakespeare Company and other special visitors In the of ng are additional endowed programs that will focus on history ethical and religious themes THE OPPORTUNITY FOR OPPORTUNITIES Access to these possibilities is the gift we seek to bring to the world While we seek to use every dollar wisely we cannot provide these opportunities cheaply Fortunately many see the value and can afford the cost But some see the value and cannot afford the cost We have expanded our efforts to provide nancial aid for families who require support In the past few years we have received almost 3 million in new gifts to support endowed scholarships with promise and determination to do more in the years ahead We take pride in the great breadth of our embrace and we seek to open our gates even wider in the future ROOM TO PLAY At the same time we have stretched our limbs as it were expanding the campus and its facilities to assure high quality places for our students to pursue athletic opportunities We have been fortunate and aggressive in pursuit of land to house the growing needs of our many eld sports The 1990s saw the creation of the baseball eld and track In the past four years we have acquired 10 more acres of land on the east end of the campus allowing the creation of a new tennis facility a new softball complex and soon a second eld along Cambridge to serve our lacrosse programs ACADEMY MAGAZINE By Dr Harry C Payne President Woodward Academy I SPRING SUMMER 2006 1

A Brave Challenger It was weird hearing the siren from the inside of the ambulance I used to hear it outside and say Wow I hope that person is alright but you never expect to be that person recalled senior MaryAnn Keen About a year ago MaryAnn attended a Kenny Chesnee concert and the next morning she woke up with a bunch of bruises which continued to last for a long time The bruises were not from any physical activity they just seemed to appear on their own during the night MaryAnn did not take huge note of this but things became worse Not only did bruises continue but she would experience frequent nose bleeds continuously bleeding cuts and blood blisters in her mouth When MaryAnn s mom looked in her mouth she saw big black circles and knew it was time to see a doctor When Mrs Keen took her out of school early on September 1 2004 it was to be her last day of school until her senior year MaryAnn said It was really scary because I am afraid of needles After a few tests the doctors told her that there were not any blood platelets remaining in her body and Mary Ann was kept in the hospital to avoid infection and other illnesses while they tried to determine what was wrong with her While the doctors were able to rule out leukemia MaryAnn recalled I didn t want to know what it was because it would make it so real Many tests nally determined that MaryAnn had aplastic anemia a disease which creates an absence of immune system red blood cells energy and platelets This is very severe You could die from this the doctor kept telling MaryAnn Once he left the room MaryAnn and her mom just sat there crying My mom said You re not going to die and I said I know This is when MaryAnn s courage became evident She said I am not going to be faced with a problem I can t x She was going to help herself survive MaryAnn called her older brother Ryan a student at Ole Miss Ryan remembers I received a call from MaryAnn explaining her situation and asking me to come home to get tested as a potential bone marrow donor It was a devastatingly emotional time for me and my entire family The drive from Ole Miss to Atlanta is ve and a half hours long that day I think I made it in four to four and a half hours The doctors found out that he was MaryAnn s perfect match It was the greatest feeling ever It felt good that my By Allison Woodward 09 brother and not a complete stranger was saving my life And it seemed that Ryan felt the same way The day I found out that I was the perfect matching donor was the greatest day of my life Not only did I get the possibility to save someone s life I got the opportunity to save my sister s life Much of the wait for the actual transplant took place in the hospital because MaryAnn s temperature remained over 101 degrees MaryAnn s treatment was to take place at Johns Hopkins where she was taken by private plane with just her mom the captain and two men for assistance From the airport she went by ambulance to the hospital Before this I didn t even know who my primary care doctor was I was really scared but it just didn t hit me yet recalls MaryAnn Then the transplant surgery occurred on October 26 2004 but only after weeks of chemotherapy to avoid a reaction between MaryAnn s immune system and Ryan s blood and bone marrow Ryan was taken into surgery and large amounts of blood and marrow were taken from his hip He said The bone marrow harvest the name of the actual process was unlike anything I have ever experienced before I had never had a surgery before so naturally I was pretty nervous In the procedure the doctors took a VERY large portion of my blood and bone marrow with long needles out of my hip bone The surgery itself lasted about an hour and afterwards I couldn t walk for about a day the loss of blood left me very light headed and unable to run or even stand for long periods of time for about three ACADEMY MAGAZINE I SPRING SUMMER 2006 weeks Although the procedure was not a fun one I was de nitely glad I could do it The bone marrow and blood were given to MaryAnn through a process almost like an IV MaryAnn stayed in the hospital for two months after the surgery and then she and her mom moved into a small apartment just around the corner from the hospital to make it easier to get to her check ups three times a week The process left Mary Ann with very little energy to eat walk or even move at all without throwing up her food She received liquid nutrition through an IV until she could take solid foods One day when MaryAnn did leave the apartment she and her mother went to the grocery store The chemotherapy caused MaryAnn to lose her hair so she wore a scarf around her head She said The people just stared at me like I was a Martian and I started crying Today MaryAnn is an active senior Although she is still catching up with her junior year school work through a program called Eaton Academy she should be nished by January she is looking into colleges such as Ole Miss or Auburn and thinking of majoring in central research She came away from the transplant with Ryan s love of spicy food a few of his allergies and curly hair in place of her long straight locks MaryAnn just recently celebrated her one year anniversary of the transplant with roses from her family and cheers from her friends Did aplastic anemia change MaryAnn s outlook on life Absolutely It made me think that things can happen to me things do happen and you just have to take things one at a time Ryan said Mary Ann s illness has taught me that life is a very fragile gift and it should be appreciated every day because you never know when it could be threatened or taken away So while alive live each day to its fullest Editor s Note This article by Allison Woodward 09 great great granddaughter of
