Champions of Woodward This is the first in a series of articles profiling supporters of Campaign Woodward Woodward I have always been just eternally grateful to Woodward for all the opportunities afforded me as a student When I was a senior and applying to schools I won the Robert W Woodruff Scholarship at Emory University It was just such a life changing event for me and my family because it meant that my college education was going to be provided for and that my parents could save money for my medical school education I always felt like the Woodruff Scholarship was really Woodward s honor too Dr Nancy Howard Gallups 84 and Dr Jeffrey Gallups are among Woodward Academy s most generous and devoted supporters Dr Nancy Gallups is an alumna and very active volunteer on behalf of Woodward serving as a member of the Governing Board The Gallups are the parents of two Woodward students Daniel a sixth grader and Mark in third grade Following are excerpts from a recent interview with the Gallups In addition to two previous gift commitments to Campaign Woodward The Gallups recently announced a 500 000 gift commitment to the new humanities building project for the Upper School while maintaining their annual giving to the Woodward Fund 10 WOODWARD ACADEMY Tell us about your connection to Woodward and how it began Dr Nancy Gallups I came to Woodward in 1981 as a high school freshman I had grown up on a small farm down in McDonough Georgia and my parents thought that it was time I had a bit more of an academic challenge They made a lot of sacrifices My mother actually went back to work so that I could come to The Gallups Atrium in the new humanities building will bear your family s name Why did you choose to support Campaign Woodward at this level Dr Nancy Gallups Woodward changed my life it set it on a totally different trajectory I was in the second class of Woodruff Scholars at Emory When I arrived on campus as a freshman at Emory they took the first group of Woodruff Scholars and my class and we went down to the Coca Cola Building I had the distinct privilege of meeting George Woodruff The thing that stands out from that day for me is that he said to us The only thing my brother Robert and I ask of you is when you can give back you need to give back I never forgot that and luckily I married
someone who was very supportive of my dream and desire to give back to Woodward Academy Dr Jeffrey Gallups We re glad to support the school To leave a legacy here will be nice because it s all about the children It s about their education and about becoming adults We re just thrilled that they keep being invited back I think the nurturing and support of a family is what we really like about the Academy The Woodward family is pretty vast In my practice as an Ear Nose and Throat doc I see people every day whose kids go to Woodward They love the school Everybody has a different experience but they are all positive There is a sense of community at Woodward that permeates all of Atlanta Woodward includes different ethnicities different backgrounds I think the diversity at the school is one of the best things about the Woodward family Describe the experience of being a Woodward parent Dr Nancy Gallups It was always my dream for my children to come here My husband was very supportive of that We now have a sixth grader and a third grader and it s just been such a pleasure to experience Woodward through their eyes I see both of my sons developing into the kind of people that I want them to become Of course we want our children to be successful academically but what I like is that they are held accountable for their actions That is a life lesson that is worth even more than the academics Academically Woodward is incredibly strong as well There are so many opportunities at Woodward My first child is not that interested in team sports He loves computers and he plays in the honors orchestra at the Lower School On the other hand my younger son is completely into athletics What I love is that you can be who you really are at Woodward We re glad to support the school To leave a legacy here will be nice because it s all about the children It s about their education and about becoming adults Dr Jeffrey Gallups Dr Jeffrey Gallups It s been a great experience I love what I see The experiences they have here will guide them throughout life Our sixth grader is challenged with very difficult problem solving What we hear about graduates from Woodward is that when they go to college they are prepared Freshman year does not seem to be as big of an issue It s very impressive Tell us about your hopes for Woodward s future Dr Nancy Gallups We believe in Woodward We want to advance opportunities for all students here as well as the faculty so we strongly believe that we need to support the school through monetary contributions In particular the new humanities building is very important to me My life at Woodward was in the old building I so clearly remember the days when it was raining and the rain came into those classrooms I have such incredibly fond memories hanging out in the courtyard to meet my boyfriend the old snack bar Mrs Finch yelling at all of us because we were talking and we were supposed to be quiet in there That was my Woodward But the building has really been here for a long time It s time that we update that building and provide all the state of the art opportunities that we can Also I hope that Woodward in the next five years becomes a national model in independent school education We already know that Woodward is one of the best schools in the country we feel like our children are having that experience But I would like for the wider world to know And I would like for us to continue to reach out globally to other countries I have no doubt that President Gulley is setting us on the trajectory to reach those goals www woodward edu SPRING 2012 11
