From page 1 In troubled economic times Woodward Academy continues to focus on the Main Thing Academy magazine asked Dr Stuart Gulley the Academy s new president and members of senior staff to define the Main Thing Without question the Main Thing at Woodward is our students to provide them with the highest quality college preparatory education possible We do this through a rigorous curriculum taught by outstanding faculty in facilities which are state of the art Our focus is the total student intellectual artistic athletic and moral said Dr Gulley Dr Gulley was named Woodward s new President this fall and is already spending a portion of his time on campus while remaining President of LaGrange College until the end of this school year This summer he will assume full time presidential duties His two sons will enroll as students next fall I am greatly honored to serve as Woodward s new president he said While I am excited about the professional challenge of leading Woodward I am even more excited that my sons will benefit from a Woodward education I hope parents will take comfort in knowing that all decisions I make will be examined through the lens of president and parent Even as families and institutions across the nation grapple with new economic realities Woodward s leaders look ahead with optimism and hold to the traditions that have shaped the school since its founding in 1900 Woodward will continue to offer a challenging academic experience to every student in a caring and structured environment that fosters the growth and development of the whole person said Headmaster Ron McCollum The Academy is attempting to hold expenditures to last year s levels and continues to be efficient with faculty structure and assignments he said We believe that Woodward is a very mature very resilient institution that has survived the Great Depression periodic economic recessions and other challenges in its history precisely because it has always focused on the Main Thing the educational experience of its students Mr McCollum said Robert F Hawks Vice President for Advancement said the school is Rahul Patel and Alex Carmen 2 academy magazine delaying for one year the start of the third and final project of Campaign Woodward the Upper School humanities building and adding a year to fund raising plans for the campaign Despite the challenges of the economy Campaign Woodward continues to make progress but we felt that adding a year would be important in allowing us to achieve our goal of 47 million We remain committed to providing our students with the best possible facilities in which to learn but our progress will now come a bit more slowly than we had originally planned Woodward s leadership faculty and staff will continue to make decisions that are in the best interest of students regardless of effort or cost said Dean Rusty Slider 75 Vice President for Admissions The Academy is using extreme care in budget planning mindful that families cannot sustain large tuition increases added Dr Gulley We are committed to constraining expenses where we can looking for every efficiency possible while not sacrificing the quality education for which Woodward has long stood l
Second grade teacher Gwen Wendt with student Kira Green Remarks from Rusty Slider 75 Vice President for Admissions in a letter to faculty and staff At Woodward our Main Thing is a consistent proven traditional approach to college preparatory education We emphasize the balanced development of the individual student in the areas of academics arts and athletics We stress the value of diversity within the community and we strive to serve the needs not only of the group as a whole but also of individual students entrusted to our care We talk about our community in the terms of the Woodward family a term I believe represents perfectly our Main Thing We take a family approach Woodward Academy has and will remain strong in the focus on our mission because we have historically not wavered from our long standing commitment to giving students the very best education We have never been tempted to change that commitment because of temporary economic challenges Nothing is of greater importance than the quality of education you provide your children In effect education is the Main Thing for parents to make available to their children There are cheaper and easier alternatives to Woodward but there are no better educational alternatives Dean Rusty Slider 75 Woodward North teacher Matt Key in his fifth grade classroom Robert F Hawks Vice President for Advancement winter spring 2009 3
