Blue Latitudesbluelatitudesfoundation.orgFounded in 2018, The Blue Latitudes Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-prot organized exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientic purposes. We elevate the traditional concept of ocean stewardship by uniting government, industry and the community to work together to conserve our oceans! In doing so, this foundation strives to explore innovative solutions to traditional marine conservation challenges. The Blue Latitudes Foundation will provide Virtual Reality (VR) goggles to offer participants an immersive ‘virtual dive.’ Using VR footage from beneath Oil Platform Eureka, we can create a computer-simulated environment that introduces participants to the marine communities below California’s oil platforms. This 360° ‘virtual dive’ offers equitable access to the ocean while showcasing a unique approach to ocean conservation at the intersection of industry and the environment. Our goal is to educate and inform participants about the challenges facing our oceans and inspire them to become better stewards of coastal and marine environments. At Blue Latitudes Foundation, we believe that taking the public underwater—where seeing is believing—is one of the best ways to achieve this. We will provide the VR goggles and licensed VR footage and manage the participant experience. In this lab students will explore the idea of alginate. Alginate is used as a thickening agent, or emulcifier, in many foods such as ice cream, fruit snacks, and alad dressings. Alginate is a polysaccharide that occurs naturally in kelp’s cell walls. Often, a form of lginate called sodium alginate is what appears in foods. This is what will be used in the lab today. Most kelp used for foods is done in kelp farms, which are separate from marine ecosystems. MPAs have helped create policies to ensure natural kelp forests can maintain a balanced ecosystem. In this lab, students will be given the opportunity to see how alginate reacts to a more attractive ion, in this case, calcium chloride. This will create the students’ own gummie worm.
