FROM PRESIDENT GULLEY This year perhaps more than ever I ve been reflecting on what it means to be part of a school family For me our Woodward family inspires hope because of our diversity commitment to service and embrace of each individual Our graduates go into the world prepared to create a better future for themselves and the people around them In this magazine we look at our school through the lens of family relationships introducing you to some of the students and parents who have found a home at Woodward and love our school While it wasn t intentional a shared theme emerged in many of the stories in these pages the common thread of connection whether through our literal family relationships or those we create together You ll read about Chris Greenway our longtime Upper School Visual Arts Department chair and the lasting and deep friendships he shares with former students and faculty colleagues You ll meet the Debate Team duo of seniors Mona Mahadevan and Malachi Robinson whose work together has elevated them to national championships And you ll learn about the Brill family s decision to endow a chair in ethical leadership to create a legacy that will honor their shared values and benefit Woodward students and their communities for generations to come These stories of connection and many others like them renew my gratitude for being part of this Woodward family In that spirit I wish you and your family a 2019 filled with peace happiness and perhaps most importantly hope for creating the kind of world our students deserve Warmest regards F Stuart Gulley Ph D Letter from the President 1

Woodward families vary in nearly every way imaginable but we all share some common beliefs that family means unconditional love and we want happiness for our kids as well as academic success We spoke to parents and students about the idea of Woodward as a family school and what they love about our community The takeaways Parents love how Woodward s teachers coaches and administrators embrace their kids as individuals provide constant support and find inventive ways to inspire them Parents and students love the diversity of our student body and how kids learn to value the perspectives of others which serves them well not only in the larger world but also in their relationships Students and parents also love the fact that kids can try so many different classes sports arts and cocurriculars to discover what inspires them Time and again we hear that Woodward really is here for our families to help kids grow with character follow their dreams and find their own unique path to success however they define it Read on to get to know some of the students and parents who are part of our family school and why it feels like home to them Photos by Brandy Ivins Wright 2 FALL 2018 WINTER 2019

Parker is having an amazing experience at Woodward We were looking for an open environment where he could grow and cultivate his many interests Woodward has absolutely fulfilled those wishes TRACY SHARP MOTHER SON Tracy Sharp Parker Middleton I t makes sense that Parker Middleton s passion would be in the arts His mother Tracy is a painter and yoga instructor and his maternal grandmother is a visual artist as well I was raised in a home dripping with art Tracy said Parker s artistry is in the form of making hip hop He s even released songs on Spotify and Apple Music At Woodward the 10th grader plays tennis and loves history and Spanish Parker 3 transferred to Woodward in the seventh grade from a small school and at first his mom was worried he might get lost in the shuffle at the Academy I find the opposite to be true It seems to me that as a result of its size Woodward is better equipped to accommodate broader styles of learning and interests Because of the extensive resources they are able to meet each child and all circumstances Students families and teachers are supported and things just seem to flow FALL 2018We WINTER Are Family 2019 3

Learning Language in a New Way B ecause of a paradigm shift in the way Woodward Academy teaches world languages students are becoming more effective communicators and engaging more deeply and authentically in culture Woodward teachers began learning about an approach called proficiency based instruction in 2015 said Lori Beth Wiseman Upper School World Languages Chair She and other world language teachers throughout the Academy collaborated to create an instructional program that reduces the emphasis on grammar without a communicative purpose and shifts the focus to effective and accurate communication in the target language Now the majority of a student s grade comes from performance based tasks she said Before our tests were mostly grammar based reading and listening activities Now students are regularly required to complete on demand writing in class participate in conversations and interpret authentic articles news and other media This is more exciting for students because the language they re exposed to is relevant and personal to them Also teachers weave small c culture into almost every lesson Big C culture is what most people remember from high school language class things that are obvious to the casual observer like food flags and festivals Small c culture is inseparable from language and more about attitudes and core values It includes things like myths SMALL C CULTURE IS INSEPARABLE FROM LANGUAGE AND MORE ABOUT ATTITUDES AND CORE VALUES IT INCLUDES THINGS LIKE MYTHS AND LEGENDS CONCEPTS OF JUSTICE AND COMMUNICATION STYLES LORI BETH WISEMAN Story continues on next page Learning L anguage in a New Way 13

LEARNING LANGUAGE IN A NEW WAY continued from page 13 and legends concepts of justice and communication styles Students grapple with questions and perspectives that hopefully change the way they see the world Ms Wiseman said Language teachers across Woodward s five schools work together to integrate curriculum In prekindergarten through sixth grade teachers have created a Spanish language program that builds on the students proficiency at each grade level Content sometimes parallels other classes to reinforce what they re learning during the rest of the day The Middle School offers Spanish and French to seventh and eighth graders over the two years students earn credit for the high school level 1 course In the Upper School students can choose Spanish French German Japanese or Mandarin Chinese or take more than one language over the four years Students can graduate with a Global Studies diploma distinction by meeting requirements that include four years of language study and coursework in world history politics or religion as well as experience hosting an international student volunteering for an international organization pursuing performing arts opportunities abroad or completing a research project on global issues or language related topics Debate Duo Claims National Wins for WA T hey have been debating together since freshman year and senior duo Mona Mahadevan and Malachi Robinson have finished as winners or runners up at four national level tournaments They won the state varsity championship as juniors In December Malachi learned he was accepted to Harvard University and Mona got the good news that she was admitted to Yale As they look toward graduation Woodward magazine asked Mona and Malachi to reflect on their debate experiences and share what s ahead for each of them HOW DID YOU GET INTERESTED IN DEBATE Mona My brother debated at Marist and he convinced me to go to debate camp before eighth grade I was instantly enthralled and I ve grown immensely as a debater since then My debate skills spilled over into school I m much better at writing essays and social studies classes are more intuitive with my broader understanding of the political system Malachi For most of my life I had been an athlete and I couldn t wait for the Friday Night Lights and cheering basketball crowds A devastating knee injury changed my circumstances I was really disappointed and relentlessly sought to get back to the Story continues at top of next page In world language classes students are developing skills that help them become strong oral and written communicators in all disciplines In their writing they learn to organize and elaborate on their thoughts use a variety of vocabulary and use complex sentence structures In their oral communication they practice engaging others in conversation by asking and answering pertinent and appropriate questions Every day in language classes students also are learning to appreciate and value cultural differences so they can function and connect with others as empathetic citizens of the world Malachi Robinson and Mona Mahadevan Obviously our goal is language proficiency We also want students to be culturally sensitive and leave Woodward with a love for other languages cultures and traditions Ms Wiseman said We want our students to crave the experience of traveling to a non English speaking country where language and culture are different Mostly our goal is to light a fire a fire for learning about languages and people who are different from themselves 14 FALL 2018 WINTER 2019

field and court in spite of my doctor s advice but then one afternoon my mom stepped in and changed my life She forced me to trudge into Brand Hall Room 211 for the first novice debate practice I quickly became drawn to the rigorous competition travel and interesting topics With hard work I have improved as a debater a writer a thinker and a person your original opinions Testing and verifying different ideas helps you to abandon dogmatic precepts and understand when what you think is actually wrong IT S ALWAYS FUN TO COACH COMMITTED STUDENTS WHO DEBATE TOGETHER FOR SEVERAL YEARS BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE CAN YOU DESCRIBE A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF A DEBATER Malachi Before the season debaters spend seven weeks researching practicing listening to lectures and overall becoming mini experts in an area of governmental policy that will be debated for the next year Camp days are long with lectures from around 9 a m to 9 30 p m Though at times grueling camp is one of the most fun parts of the season you make friends with debaters and coaches from across the country During the school year there is a tournament about once every other week Some national tournaments require flying to cities like Dallas Las Vegas and Chicago If you win enough in the first few days you advance to elimination rounds which then progress to the championship To prepare we practice two or three times a week Outside of practice we do extensive research and argument preparation HOW DID YOUR DEBATE PARTNERSHIP COME ABOUT AND EVOLVE OVER TIME Mona We have debated together since ninth grade Throughout high school we ve grown as human beings and as debaters Generally to have a strong partnership both debaters must have a commitment to learning and researching we definitely had that Our competitive desire to win debates also strengthened our partnership HOW DOES DEBATE PREPARE YOU FOR THE FUTURE Mona Debate significantly improved my critical thinking and reading comprehension skills I m also a lot more informed about the world I have a deeper commitment to the political system and current events because I know that even if those things don t directly affect me they certainly affect other people Malachi Debate teaches you how to speak effectively yet even more so it teaches you how to listen effectively You have to learn how to truly pay attention and understand what the other team is saying You become a better advocate for either side regardless of THEM GROW AND MATURE IN THEIR WORKING RELATIONSHIP AS A TEAM MONA AND MALACHI ARE TRULY EXCELLENT AT DEBATE BUT THEY RE ALSO EXEMPLARY STUDENTS AND FUN TO SPEND TIME WITH I WILL MISS THEM GREATLY AS THEY HEAD OFF TO COLLEGE MAGGIE BERTHIAUME DIRECTOR OF DEBATE WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR COLLEGE AND BEYOND Mona I want to study economics or political science in college I hope to enact material political or social change perhaps by becoming a lawyer or consulting for a political advocacy organization I want to help marginalized or vulnerable individuals so many people lack a voice in our system Malachi At different points in my life I ve wanted to become a doctor a chef a preacher a firefighter an inventor a musician a lawyer and a writer At present I am leaning toward one or both of the last two but hopefully at some point I can still open a restaurant In college I plan to study literature or public policy then pursue a career in writing or law WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT WOODWARD Mona My favorite thing about Woodward is its commitment to progress and diversity it aims to be a model for other schools No other private school in Atlanta has as many students of color Malachi What I like most are the amazing opportunities for students Before high school I was almost certain that I would pursue a career in engineering or the sciences However Woodward s amazing social studies and English departments and cocurricular activities like debate have taught me just how interesting the humanities are Few other schools offer such a wide range of activities clubs and unique experiences for students with all different interests Debate Duo Claims National Wins 15

Cece Ng with teammates Meryl Inman 21 Parker Daly 22 Wallace Putt 22 Abbey Miller 21 and Brooklyn Carr 20 Q A WITH Cece Ng 19 We interviewed Woodward cross country athlete Cece Ng 19 about her season future and why she became a runner HOW DID THE SEASON GO FOR YOU OVERALL It was probably my best season with regards to my performance and connection with the team Not only did I run a personal 5K best of 19 54 but I also felt more confident as a runner As a team captain I was able to organize team related events and be a leader for my team to follow Although I have always had close friends on the team this year I felt more connected with all of my teammates especially the girls team My goal this year was to create an accepting caring and goaldriven atmosphere for the girls Together we created our own little family and I will always value those relationships WHEN DID YOU START RUNNING AND WHY WERE YOU DRAWN TO CROSS COUNTRY I started running in sixth grade with a program called Girls on the Run After I enrolled at Woodward my dad encouraged me to join a team to meet friends He is a runner himself so he suggested I take up running At first I was nervous but I understood it was an opportunity for me to connect with people and establish myself as a serious runner Cross country has been a very prevalent part of my life ever since It has given me friendships and connections with people that have lasted throughout my high school career 20 WHAT MOMENTS STAND OUT WHEN YOU REFLECT ON YOUR CROSS COUNTRY CAREER My proudest moment would definitely be winning our region championship this past year I ve always been chasing the title both literally and figuratively and all of my hard work finally paid off during this race I am even more proud of my girls team Although we placed second I ve never seen a more hardworking and dedicated group of girls The boys team which won a region title impressed me beyond belief and I was so proud of them as well HOW DID YOU BALANCE ACADEMICS AND RUNNING Because I started cross country in Middle School I gradually learned how to handle my athletic and academic careers hand in hand as the level of difficulty progressed I was so used to always having a sport after school in Middle School that when I transitioned into the Upper School it was not difficult for me to learn how to balance the two A good portion of my afternoons around 2 5 hours a day were dedicated to cross country which motivated me to find time to study whenever I could During the weekends I had to sacrifice a lot of studying time for my sport for meets but I learned how to adjust by preparing for assignments and assessments in advance My biggest challenges have been weekends because I also work a part time job FALL 2018 WINTER 2019 HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE HEADING INTO YOUR FINAL MONTHS AT WOODWARD It seems unreal Senior year is what everyone looks forward to throughout high school Now that it is finally here I find that the time seems to be flying by I love spending time with my friends and experiencing senior activities and privileges I m sad that my years of running are over but I m so grateful for the experience I ve had these past few years My coaches and teammates are some of my biggest supporters HAVE YOU STARTED NARROWING DOWN YOUR COLLEGE LIST I ve narrowed down my list to a few schools in the Northeast and West I m really interested in the University of Southern California and Barnard College I plan on majoring in psychology with an emphasis on child behavioral studies I want to open my own practice in the future Although I don t plan on running competitively I want to join a running club within my college community to meet people who love the sport as much as I do

BRILL FAMILY continued from page 21 A MESSAGE FROM students to act responsibly in the context of real world dilemmas and effect positive change in their communities said Dr Chris Freer Vice President for Advancement Currently this role falls on our faculty but to achieve excellence and meet our strategic goals Woodward needs a leader to coordinate and oversee this initiative across all grades The Brill chair will be part of Woodward s Institute for Ethics Civic Engagement which will help fulfill the Academy s vision to develop ethical problem solvers This will happen through specific coursework as well as ethical lessons within existing courses in grades pre K through 12 The chair will coordinate and enhance the programs Woodward already offers which include Community Builders at the Primary School Student Council at Woodward North the Lower School s Ambassadors program Peer Helpers in the Middle School and an Ethical Leadership course Peer Leadership SGA Service Leadership Board and Advisory Council in the Upper School Ethics will be taught in age appropriate ways throughout the Academy to strengthen the moral compass of students as they re developing said Dr Freer Woodward is in a unique position to do this work Because of the wide range of backgrounds cultures faiths and learning styles represented in our student body Woodward students learn empathy and better understand the perspectives of others Dr Gulley said This establishes the essential foundation for all ethical leadership For the immediate future endowment income will support a salary supplement for an existing faculty member who will develop and teach the Ethical Leadership course and lead Academy wide efforts in character work When the endowment grows the chair will become a full time position For more information or to contribute to the Ron M Brill Chair for Ethical Leadership or the Institute for Ethics Civic Engagement contact the Advancement Office at 404 765 4030 or email chris freer woodward edu 22 The Woodward Fund Team I t can be scary and even risky to try new things but this year we wanted to see if we could condense our annual parent campaign for The Woodward Fund to just six short weeks in the fall The benefits of condensing the campaign would be many both for all of us here on the Woodward Advancement team and for all of the Woodward parents out there but only if we could reach our participation goals and that felt like a big if That s why we re so thrilled that in just a month and half this fall we reached 50 total parent participation For comparison last year our overall participation was 47 at the end of May Additionally we had four of our five schools increase their participation from last year with a strong showing from each school as well as from our dynamo new parents What s more 10 truly outstanding homerooms two in LS two in WN and six in PS had 100 parent participation parent participation 82 63 61 Primary School Lower School Woodward North 52 41 61 Middle School Upper School Overall New Parents We re so grateful to all of you for standing behind our students this fall and for producing The Woodward Fund participation numbers that reflect our love of this community and our school spirit We could not have done this without the help of 30 volunteers from across campus who made calls wrote emails sent texts and represented The Woodward Fund at campus events The funds you raised and the incredible show of support pays itself forward in innumerable ways every single day here at Woodward Thank you Haven t made your gift to The Woodward Fund yet You can give online at woodward edu giving FALL 2018 WINTER 2019
