CPA When I married my wife Cindy she was teaching in the Woodward Middle School and later she worked as an instructional aide at Woodward North We chose Woodward for our three sons who are Vintage Eagles Over the years Cindy s dedication and service to the Academy have far surpassed my own She is the person who visited with the teachers each year helped select our sons coursework chauffeured them to every school and athletic event and served as a room parent for so many many years Ultimately she served several years as the Upper School Parent Community Chair and was involved in many college fair days and teacher appreciation lunches Tell us about your sons Woodward experiences Our sons were all good students yet all three are quite different in personality and talents One son loved baseball and football and found his self confidence determination and leadership skills athletically Another son absolutely excelled in the classroom where he gained the self esteem to chart his own path to success and not simply follow others Our third son is so creative artistically and Woodward had just the right teachers to encourage and nurture his talents and confidence Today we are blessed to have a doctor an engineer and an architect as sons all with solid Woodward WOODWARD EDU educations But they are most importantly good people with values that the Academy reinforced every day It is one thing to teach a child to count but far more difficult and important to teach them what counts Woodward is a part of all of our lives The school has taught us many wonderful lessons and given us great memories lifelong friendships cherished teacher relationships and unwavering bonds with fellow parents You have served for many years for organizations such as Southwest Christian Hospice Hope House Daybreak and PURE Ministries Why have you chosen to serve these organizations I was blessed to grow up with giving parents and grandparents I saw my dad working in a Thanksgiving soup kitchen working at summer youth camps taking Scouts camping serving as a deacon in church and faithfully tending to his ailing parents for many years Mom was always taking food to poor rural families living near our hometown and visiting her students at their homes when they were sick or had family crises I fondly remember my grandmother one of the original pink ladies at South Fulton Hospital telling me with a twinkle in her eye that she was taking a huge banana pudding to some of her sick elderly friends She herself was already 85 years old All my life I have been blessed with so many loving examples and I can only hope to pass on a small portion of their good to those around me Their examples and God s goodness to me have allowed me to work with several wonderful organizations such as Southwest Christian Care in Union City which provides hospice care for no fee a medically fragile children s respite and an elderly daycare facility for adults suffering from the early stages of dementia Many Woodward families also support this organization PURE Ministries works with families with disabled children and is led by a former Woodward teacher David Glover I enjoy being around young people with their enthusiasm and passion for the future which has led me to work with several campus ministries at Auburn and Georgia Tech Tech s ministry is run by a Woodward graduate Rick Harper 79 Often in community service work I cross paths with fellow members of the Woodward family a natural result of the emphasis the school places on service to others Woodward graduates know that selfless activity is the best thing you can do for yourself and they often measure their efforts satisfaction and contentment by how much good they have done for others Continued on next page FALL WINTER 2015 3

Embracing Differences Religious Diversity Promises Peaceful Tomorrow K atelyn O Dunne arrived at Woodward Academy seeking to foster collaborative interfaith dialogue She wants to prepare students to be catalysts of change in college and beyond Before she joined the Academy in August 2015 Katelyn O Dunne called Katie or Chaplain K by her friends and colleagues had already developed a passion for interfaith dialogue as a tool for social change She worked with her fianc also a pastor at a homeless shelter that doubles as a church There Katie learned how faith can unite people and overcome obstacles The shelter was a place for marginalized groups who felt separated from the community to feel a sense of belonging through faith she says A member of the U S women s triathlon team Katie also has a passion for running While working at Back on My Feet an Atlanta nonprofit which using running to empower homeless people she found the inspiration to merge faith and education I was running with a gentleman she says And we had a conversation about faith and the root causes of poverty He believed that the key to alleviating poverty was education and a light went on for me I knew I had to work with children Now she seeks to instill in students the belief that embracing differences can have positive social effects The chaplain teaches four Comparative Religion courses at the Upper School and has restructured the curriculum to focus on real world issues and ecumenical dialogue Students pick one 8 WOODWARD AC ADEMY issue like commercialism government or extremism and analyze that issue through seven different religions showing them how these practical concepts are shaped by faith she explains Katie s efforts extend outside the classroom She is building an ecumenical religious club and holding biweekly interfaith prayer services so that religious groups on campus can unite and discuss current events from different perspectives To test run this initiative student leaders from four religious organizations co authored an interfaith prayer for Founders Day These student leaders hadn t even met each other before Katie says To me that was the biggest piece of evidence that interfaith collaboration has room to grow For younger students she approaches interfaith diversity in a more subtle way reading books to children in the Primary School and conducting Chaplain Chat lunches with Lower School students The aim of both initiatives is to build a relationship with all students It might not be obvious that reading or Endowment Fund Will Enhance Religious Studies In April 2015 the family of the late R J Brand Jr 35 a longtime member of the Governing Board and a devoted friend of Woodward established the Pauline and R L Brand Jr 35 Religious Studies Endowment Fund to support and enhance religious studies Chaplain O Dunne will play a leadership role in directing the use of income from the 2 million endowment But first she plans to truly get to know Woodward students I would love to make Comparative Religion a service learning course invite influential religious speakers to campus or establish a scholarship for religious studies she said But I m still new here and I want to hear from the students what they need most The children of R L and Pauline Brand Beverly Moye and Dr Robert L Brand III 60 with President Stuart Gulley and Chaplain O Dunne lunches support interfaith collaboration she admits But I want to get face time with younger students so they can feel comfortable discussing these issues when they are older The chaplain hopes to foster a tolerance for differences that can overcome pressing societal issues like poverty and conflict There s so much violence in the world and it is important to have leaders capable of approaching the differences that cause violence with empathy and compassion she says Woodward students will be those leaders in 10 years and it s my job to help them make positive change in the world l DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE

Success Beyond Woodward The Power of Presence F ilm producer and Anti Recidivism Coalition founder Scott Budnick 95 received the 2015 Woodward Academy GMA Distinguished Alumni Award When Scott Budnick entered Woodward as a freshman the Academy only had four short years to make an impression and provide the prolific opportunities that would pave the way for his future Part of Scott s student experience was organic for instance he acquired a cadre of friends he describes as truly diverse Another part can be attributed to his innate drive and an environment that welcomed entrepreneurship allowing Scott to start a business during his sophomore year as a disc jockey for weddings and parties after War Eagle football games However it was an opportunity during his senior year that truly uncovered his path Scott had decided to pursue medicine after graduation when Woodward offered students the chance to be extras in a TNT miniseries about the Civil War filming in Atlanta A busload of students including Scott departed campus and headed to the set on a Saturday 28 WOODWARD AC ADEMY The students portrayed imprisoned soldiers in tattered uniforms under the drenching force of a rain machine in freezing weather a day s work for 60 While his peers grumbled Scott was captivated I sat there and was mesmerized watching the director on the crane swooping down with the cameras he said That was my first time being bitten by the bug That was an experience I got because of Woodward The impression had been made Scott combined that experience with the discovery of his writing voice in English classes taught by teachers including Lucy Klein and went to Emory University to earn a degree in business and film He interned with Warner Brothers the 90s TV show Baywatch a talent agency and the casting director from the TNT project that originally sparked his interest in the industry After a period of post grad struggles he was hired as an assistant on the movie Road Trip This led to a working relationship with director Todd Phillips that over 14 years resulted in 11 comedies including The Hangover series and Project X on which Scott served as executive producer Scott had a heavy hand in the casting editing budgeting and marketing and especially the writing of beloved box office hits Though he admits to rarely being starstruck the allure of the film industry is undeniable Yet while working on Starsky Hutch Scott found a very different calling juvenile justice reform I met another producer who said I teach a creative writing class down at the local juvenile hall will you come be a speaker in my class Scott said I sat with kids who had committed some serious crimes I remember on one side of me there was a 15 year old who had just been sentenced to 300 years in prison That day Scott learned the teenager had been a gang member he was sentenced for standing next to the person who committed the shooting The victim was in and out of the hospital within a day In my own moral code I didn t think that was right I understood that all kids have the ability to change We all know who you are at 15 is not who you are at 25 It s not who you are at 35 It was something my heart poured out for he said Scott founded the Anti Recidivism Coalition ARC in 2013 becoming an advocate in an arena where there are few From creating legislation that ensures the possibility of parole for young offenders to providing mentorship programs the ARC offers support and advocacy for people who were under 18 when they entered the criminal justice system DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE
